Mumbai Indians continue to miss their star batter Suryakumar Yadav, who is currently sidelined due to injury. Things have not gone well for MI in the absence of Suryakumar as they have lost their first two games in IPL 2024. Ahead of MI’s second game, which was against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday, a fan pointed out how getting to face the Hardik Pandya-led side early in the tournament was good for SRH. “Important match today especially for SunRisers Hyderabad at home. Might be the best time to play Mumbai Indians this early. Players like Kishan look currently under cooked  for game time form & no Suryakumar Yadav yet , still  has ankle problem,” wrote the user on X.

“Little correction mate. Ankle plus I got operated for sports hernia,” wrote Suryakumar. The comment has gone viral on social media.

Suryakumar is yet to get fitness clearance from the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The world number 1 T20I batter Suryakumar has been stationed at the NCA in Bengaluru for his recovery and rehabilitation following a surgery for sports hernia. He has been out of action since December last year.

He had undergone a groin surgery in February. This was the second surgery he had in recent months after the one for an ankle injury.

“I want to thank everyone for their concerns and well wishes for my health, and I am happy to tell you all that I will be back very soon,” he had said in a post on X after the surgery.

Suryakumar led the Indian T20I team for the three-match series in South Africa in Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya’s absence. He scored 56 off 36 balls in the second T20I in Gqeberha and 100 off 56 balls in the third T20I in Johannesburg.

He was not part of India’s ODI squad for the three-match series in South Africa. Yadav was also unavailable for selection for home series at home against Afghanistan due to injury.

Russia Jails Journalist For 2 Years For Opposing Ukraine War

Russia Jails Journalist For 2 Years For Opposing Ukraine War

Russia has launched hundreds of criminal cases against individuals who oppose Ukraine war.

Moscow:

A Russian court on Thursday sentenced a journalist to two years in prison for denouncing Moscow’s full-scale military offensive on Ukraine, as police in Moscow detained five other reporters over a 24-hour period.

Russia has made on-the-ground reporting increasingly dangerous and illegal since it sent troops into Ukraine two years ago, arresting and fining those who defy the Kremlin’s narratives.

A court in the western exclave of Kaliningrad said journalist Mikhail Feldman had discredited Russia’s armed forces in a series of posts on the VKontakte social network, the OVD-Info and Memorial rights groups said, citing his lawyer.

“This is exactly the punishment the prosecution asked for,” OVD-Info said. “In addition to being imprisoned, Feldman was banned from administering websites for two years.”

Russia has launched hundreds of criminal cases against individuals who oppose its campaign against Ukraine.

Under military censorship laws, Russians who criticise the offensive online or journalists that use information other than that provided by Russian officials can face years in prison.

The sentence came after police in Moscow detained five independent journalists over the past 24 hours, one of whom said he was beaten, OVD-Info reported Thursday.

SOTAvision journalist Antonina Favorskaya was taken for interrogation late Wednesday after serving 10 days’ jail for laying flowers at late opposition politician Alexei Navalny’s grave.

Her colleagues Alexandra Astakhova and Anastasia Musatova, who came to meet her at the detention centre where she was set to be released, were also detained by police, SOTAvision said.

Then, early Thursday, police arrested reporters Ekaterina Anikievich from SOTAvision and Konstantin Zharov from RusNews, who were filming near Favorskaya’s home.

“They kicked me, put a foot on my head, twisted my fingers, mocked me when I tried to get up, demanded to show my rucksack as if it might contain explosives,” Zharov said.

Since launching its assault on Ukraine, Russia has banned, blocked or attempted to censor almost all independent media organisations still operating in the country.

Many independent journalists fled in the wake of the offensive, and those that remain face risks. US reporters Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmasheva are currently in jail awaiting trial.

Also on Thursday a court sent a Navalny associate to pre-trial detention on “extremism”-related charges.

Olga Komleva, who volunteered at Navalny’s Ufa headquarters in central Russia, was arrested earlier this week in the latest in a string of cases against Navanly’s allies who have stayed in Russia.

"We Are Considering Humanitarian Aspect": Veep On Citizenship Law CAA

'We Are Considering Humanitarian Aspect': Vice President On Citizenship Law CAA

He highlighted the long history of India giving refuge to many religious communities (File)

New Delhi:

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his strong disapproval of the use of sovereign platforms for making ignorant observations about CAA.

Emphasising that CAA is meant to give reprieve to those persecuted on religious grounds in our neighbourhood, VP Dhankar highlighted that none is being deprived of citizenship and still the narrative is so different.

“How can an observation on the Citizenship Amendment Act be made in ignorance of ground reality? We are considering the humanitarian aspect, a reprieve to those who have been persecuted on religious grounds in our neighbourhood. No one is being deprived. We are not inviting people to benefit from it. Benefit of this is being given to those who have been in this country for over a decade,” the VP said while addressing the American Bar Association (ABA) India Conference 2024.

Referring to the 2014 cutoff date for citizenship under CAA, the Vice President said that we are not inviting people to take advantage of it. “Benefit of this is being given to whom? Who are already in this country. They have been in this country for over a decade,” he stressed.

Addressing the 2nd edition of the American Bar Association Spring Conference as chief guest in Delhi, Mr Dhankhar highlighted the long history of India giving refuge to many religious communities.

The Vice-President said that those trying to teach lessons to us while being ignorant about ground realities must be rebuffed.

Underscoring the structured democratic tradition in India right from parliament to panchayat level, the Vice-President objected to the remarks made by some from sovereign platforms about India’s institutions. “We are not a nation to get scriptures from others,” Mr Dhankhar stated.

“We are a nation with a civilisational ethos of more than 5000 years. Look at the motto of G20: One Earth One Family One Future. We did not coin it for G20. It is the nectar of our civilisational worth, embedded in our ethos!,” he added.

VP further said, “There are some countries, from several platforms, they want to teach us what democracy is?” and asked the youth to speak against such things on social media and other platforms.

He called upon the young minds to enlighten the countries, trying to teach us lessons out of their ignorance, to engage in diligence.

Tracing the economic journey of India from fragile five to big five, the Vice-President questioned those who had been in power but only spread pessimism. ” My heart hurts when someone who was in a position of power in this country, in the field of economics, spread only pessimissim,” he added.

R Venkataramani, Attorney General of India, Tushar Mehta, Solicitor General of India, Lalit Bhasin, President, Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), Pratibha Jain, Chair, India Committee, ABA and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.

Iran thanks Pakistan for rescuing Iranian fishermen

Iran has expressed gratitude towards Pakistan for rescuing eight Iranian fishermen, whose boat had caught fire in international waters.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani voiced the gratitude on Thursday, three days after the incident, in an Urdu-language post on X.

He appreciated Pakistan Navy’s “timely action,” which he said, had been taken on “humanitarian grounds.”

“The relationship of friendship between the people of Iran and Pakistan is not bound by any border,” Kan’ani added.

PNS (Pakistan Navy Ship) Yarmook carried out the rescue mission on Monday by taking “swift action” after hearing a distress call from the boat, Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported, citing the country’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

As well as rescuing the fishermen, the Pakistani vessel played a role in extinguishing the fire, the ISPR added.

The paper also quoted the Iranian Ambassador to Islamabad Reza Amiri-Moghaddam as similarly appreciating the humanitarian operation conducted by Pakistan Navy.

“I would like to wholeheartedly appreciate Pakistan Navy for responding actively and conscientiously to the distress call of assistance from an Iranian fishing boat caught in an uncontrollable fire in the open sea and safely rescuing eight Iranian fishermen,” the envoy said in a statement.

“Iran and Pakistan have a close mutual support and cooperation in rescue and humanitarian assistance operations in international waters through their vigilance and professionalism, which was carried out this time by Pakistan Navy. Iran and Pakistan have always remained committed to standing by each other in hard times during the history of the two brotherly countries,” he added.

In January, the two neighboring countries witnessed an escalation of cross-border tensions over counter-terrorism operations.

On January 16, Iran launched simultaneous drone and missile attacks on two bases of Jaish ul-Adl, a terror outfit that was formed in 2012 and has conducted several attacks on the Iranian soil in recent years.

Two days later, Pakistan carried out strikes against, what it called, bases of the separatist Baloch Liberation Front and Baloch Liberation Army in regions close to Iran’s border, with Tehran condemning the attacks as unacceptable and unbalanced.

Shortly afterwards, however, Pakistan announced a complete restoration of its diplomatic relations with Iran, and the Iranian and Pakistani ambassadors returned to their posts in late January.

India's Richest Woman Savitri Jindal Quits Congress, Joins BJP

Savitri Jindal was listed as the richest woman in the country by Forbes India this year.

Chandigarh:

Former Haryana minister Savitri Jindal quit the Congress and joined the BJP in Haryana’s Hisar on Thursday, days after her son and industrialist Naveen Jindal switched parties.

The 84-year-old Ms Savitri Jindal joined the BJP along with her daughter Seema in the presence of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and other BJP leaders.

Announcing her decision to quit the Congress in a social media post late on Wednesday night, she said, “I represented the people of Hisar for 10 years as an MLA and have served Haryana state selflessly as a minister. The people of Hisar are my family and on the advice of my family, I am resigning from the primary membership of the Congress today.”

Savitri Jindal was listed as the richest woman in the country by Forbes India this year.

According to the Forbes list of the 10 richest women in India, Savitri Jindal, the wife of the late industrialist and former minister O P Jindal, has a net worth of USD 29.1 billion (one billion = Rs 100 crore).

In a post on X, Mr Saini said, “We welcome into the BJP family veteran Congress leader, former minister in Haryana government, famous social worker Smt. Savitri Jindal ji and her daughter Smt. Seema Jindal ji.” Savitri Jindal was a minister in the previous Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress government in Haryana.

In 2014, she lost to BJP’s Kamal Gupta from Hisar. Mr Gupta is currently a minister in the Saini-led government.

Naveen Jindal, who represented Kurukshetra in the Lok Sabha from 2004-14 as a Congress MP, quit the party on Sunday. He has been named as the BJP candidate from Kurukshetra.

After being welcomed into the party fold by Saini and Khattar, Savitri Jindal said, “We will work together to form a strong government at the Centre under (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi’s leadership once again.” “I express gratitude to every office-bearer and worker of the BJP for making us a member of the ‘Modi Parivar’. We will live up to the party’s expectations,” she said.

Haryana witnessed unprecedented development under the previous Khattar government, she added.

Savitri Jindal further said, “I am impressed by the prime minister’s vision of making India a developed nation by 2047.” Speaking about her husband O P Jindal, who died in a helicopter crash in 2005, she said he was of the view that India can become a great nation with the upliftment of the downtrodden and economically weaker sections.

“He entered politics with this pledge in 1991. After his demise in March 2005, I entered politics to realise his dreams,” she said.

“Hisar is my janam and karam bhoomi. People of Hisar have always showered their love and I also treated them as part of my family,” she said.

Savitri Jindal said the country needs the BJP and PM Modi today.

Speaking on the occasion, Saini said the BJP’s double-engine government did a lot of development work in the past 10 years.

Party leaders Kamal Gupta, Bhavya Bishnoi, and former governor Ganeshi Lal were also present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, party leaders also inaugurated the election office of Ranjit Singh Chautala, who has been fielded by the BJP from Hisar Lok Sabha seat.

Polling for 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana will be held in the sixth phase on May 25.

Man Arrested For Sexually Assaulting Friend At Crowded Beach Gets Bail

Man Arrested For Sexually Assaulting Friend At Crowded Mumbai Beach Gets Bail

The man had been in jail since June 2021.

Mumbai:

The Bombay High Court has granted bail to a man arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at a crowded beach in Mumbai in 2021, noting the survivor and the accused were friends and the charges against him appear implausible.

Judge Prithiviraj Chavan, in an order passed on Wednesday, pointed out that the survivor’s statement recorded before a magistrate’s court revealed she was friends with the accused, and also noted that charges in the three-year-old case have not yet been framed by the trial court.

“Since the victim was a major at the time of the alleged offence, prima facie, it does not appeal to one’s mind that in broad daylight at a crowded Juhu Chowpatty (beach) on the day of Eid-Ul-Fitr, the applicant would commit forcible sexual intercourse with the victim,” the HC observed.

No sane man would believe it, the judge added.

The high court also said that since the survivor was an adult at the time of the alleged incident, there was no need to invoke the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the accused.

The accused was booked under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code for rape, outraging the modesty of a woman and stalking, among others, as well as sections of the POCSO Act.

The alleged incident took place on May 14, 2021, when the survivor had gone to Juhu Chowpatty in suburban Mumbai with the accused.

He sought sexual favours which the survivor refused. However, the accused then threatened her with dire consequences and sexually assaulted her at an isolated place at the tourist site, the prosecution submitted.

The court, in the order, noted there was no need to invoke the POCSO Act against the accused as the survivor’s age, as per medical reports, was more than 18 years.

The applicant has been in jail ever since his arrest in June 2021. The trial court has not yet framed charges and, therefore, there is no likelihood of bringing the trial to its logical end (anytime soon), the high court noted.

“Having considered all the aforesaid peculiar circumstances, the application (for bail) is allowed”, the judge said.

Sent in to bat, RR were reduced to 36 for 3 in the eighth over but the 22-year-old Parag single-handedly took the home side to 185 for 5 with a magnificent unbeaten knock studded with seven fours and six sixes.

Parag, who was promoted to number 4 by the team management this season and made 43 in the previous match, took 25 runs off veteran South African pacer Anrich Nortje with scores of 4, 4, 6, 4, 6, 1 in the final over to hit his highest T20 score.

Chasing 186 for a win, DC could only manage 173 for 5 in 20 overs though South African youngster Tristan Stubbs (44 not out off 23 balls) kept them in the hunt till the final over from which they needed 17 runs.

Avesh Khan conceded just four runs to help RR win their second consecutive match.

South African pacer Nandre Burger and Yuzvendra Chahal took two wickets apiece to also contribute in the RR win.
