Bangladesh building fire kills 45, injures dozens

The fire, which struck Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall late on Thursday, started in a biryani restaurant on the first floor, with 13 units of firefighters battling for two hours to douse the flames, Aljazeera reports.

Doctors said most of the dead suffocated, with others dying as they jumped off the building. Dozens of people are being treated for burn wounds in two state-run hospitals.

Brigadier General Main Uddin, a top fire service official, said that the fire could have originated from a gas leak or stove. “It was a dangerous building with gas cylinders on every floor, even on the staircases,” he told reporters.

Relatives gathered at the hospital early on Friday to receive the bodies of the dead, with some mourning outside the emergency department. Health Minister Samanta Lal Sen told reporters that he expected the death toll to rise.

Survivor Mohammad Altaf recounted his narrow escape. “I went to the kitchen, broke a window and jumped to save myself,” he told reporters, adding that a cashier and server who urged people to leave during the first moments had died later.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, ordering officials to provide swift treatment for the injured.

The government has set up a five-member panel to investigate the incident.

Kishan Contacted By Team India During England Series. This Was His Reply

Since the BCCI annual contract list was released on Wednesday, two names which have grabbed the attention were Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan with their. The two star players have been part of India’s planning in recent times but still found themselves excluded from  the BCCI contracts. According to reports and BCCI’s hint in one of its press releases, the reluctance of the duo to play in domestic cricket may have played a big part in both of them losing BCCI central contracts.

While there was no official reason given on why Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were dropped, one line in BCCI’s release gives a strong hint. “The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team,” the BCCI stated.

When Ishan Kishan had left India’s Tour of South Africa, the BCCI had said on December 17: “Mr Ishan Kishan has requested the BCCI to be released from the upcoming Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. The wicket-keeper has subsequently been withdrawn from the Test squad.”

While it was expected that Ishan Kishan would play domestic cricket from his time away from the national team, the wicketkeeper-batter chose to remain absent from his state team Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy matches. Despite Indian cricket team coach Rahul Dravid clearly mentioning that he need to play some form of cricket to regain his place in the Indian squad, Ishan Kishan ignored the instruction.

Shreyas Iyer also excused himself from one of the Ranji Trophy matches for Mumbai due to injury. However, NCA’s report on his injury was contradictory, according to a report in Indian express.

Now, in a report by ESPN Cricinfo, it has been claimed that Ishan Kishan was contacted by the Indian cricket team management during the ongoing India vs England Test series. The reports added that Kishan replied that he was not ready yet. In his absence, Dhruv Jurel got the opportunity and won the Player of the Match award.

Education department explores grace period for intermediate exam entry following tragic incident

Hyderabad: The Education department is contemplating on allowing intermediate students late up to five minutes, into exam centres.

However, it could be case by case on a genuine issue only. The move comes after the TS BIE’s one-late rule claimed the life of a student in Adilabad on Thursday.

The intermediate second year student, Shiva Kumar, died allegedly by jumping into an irrigation project, after he was refused entry into the examination hall citing the one minute late rule.

On Friday, Chief Secretary A Santhi Kumar held a meeting on exams with Principal Secretary to Government (Education) Burra Venkatesham, Collectors and SPs other Education department officials at Secretariat here.

The Intermediate Examinations that began on February 28 is being conducted from 9 am to 12 noon. Students are allowed into the centre one-hour prior to the examination and they are instructed to occupy their seats by 8.45 am.

However, a grace period of 15 minutes from 8.45 am to 9 am is extended for students, who are strictly not allowed after 9 am. A total of 22,394 intermediate first year students missed the English paper-I examination on Friday.

Out of 5,00,936 students who registered 4,80,542 appeared for the examination during which four malpractice cases with three in Karimnagar and one Nizamabad were booked. Meanwhile, the TS BIE will hold spot evaluation camps for the IPE in four phases commencing March 4.

S Korea says better Japan ties helping deter N Korea's threat

Under Yoon’s administration, Seoul has sought better ties with Tokyo which have been fraught with historical baggage for years at a time of China’s growing influence and North Korea’s growing missile and nuclear programs, Reuters reported.

During a ceremony to mark an independence holiday, Yoon said next year would be the 60th anniversary of normalized diplomatic relations with Japan and he hoped it could be a chance for the bilateral relationship to reach a “higher level.”

“Now, South Korea and Japan are working together to overcome the painful past and moving toward a ‘new world’,” he said in a speech to commemorate the formation of an independence movement against Japan’s 1910-1945 occupation of Korea.

“The security cooperation between the two countries against North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats has been strengthened further,” he added.

Tensions have also increased on the Korean peninsula following intensifying military drills by the South Korean and US militaries, sometimes involving Japan, in response to weapons testing by the North, which said it was readying for a “nuclear war” with its enemies.

South Korea’s government would continue to provide support for North Korean defectors, Yoon said.

From undernutrition to obesity, Lancet study unveils India’s double whammy

From undernutrition to obesity, Lancet study unveils India’s double whammy

New Delhi: India is grappling with a profound nutritional shift, as highlighted by the latest Lancet study, with nutritionists attributing this “double whammy” of undernutrition and obesity to a dual challenge: inadequate consumption of quality foods and easy access to cheap, unhealthy alternatives.

The Lancet study, published on Thursday, found that in India, nearly 44 million women and 26 million men were obese in 2022, respectively.

“These numbers are up from 2.4 million and 1.1 million in 1990 for women and men, respectively, while for children, the baseline number was about 0.4 million,” said study co-author Guha Pradeepa, from Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), Chennai, told PTI.

The analysis by the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) — a global network of scientists — and the World Health Organization (WHO) also found that about 12.5 million children aged between five and 19 were overweight in 2022.

Reacting to the study findings, nutritionist Sudha Vasudevan, who was not involved in the study, noted that while good quality foods are nutrient-dense like fruits and vegetables, unhealthy foods are usually processed, containing high-fat, sugar, salt, and refined carbohydrates.

“We had not yet won the war against undernutrition-related health problems, but now we are additionally burdened by those coming from overnutrition or obesity, and resembling the developed nations in that sense,” Vasudevan, Senior Scientist and Head of the Department of Foods & Nutrition Research, MDRF, told PTI.

The findings suggest trends of an “epidemiological and nutrition transition” of India, Vasudevan said.

“While the developed countries might be economically equipped to deal with obesity and related healthcare burden, India is not and therefore, we are struggling,” she said. The Lancet study looked at body mass index (BMI) to understand how obesity and underweight have changed worldwide from 1990 to 2022. It analysed the weights and heights of over 220 million people aged five years or older, from across more than 190 countries.

The findings also highlighted a major shift in lifestyle over the past decades, including lack of exercise and healthy food, said Pradeepa. The study found that the adult obesity rate in India increased from 1.2 per cent in 1990 to 9.8 per cent in 2022 for women, while for men, it rose from 0.5 per cent to 5.4 per cent.

Pradeepa attributed the spike in obesity rate to a combination of biological and social factors. “Biological factors involve constant, cyclical hormonal activity with pregnancy-specific weight gain, following which taking care of the child takes precedence.

“On the other hand, social factors compel them to prioritise their children’s and family’s health over their own. These factors present as barriers to doing exercise for women and taking care of themselves,” she explained.

The findings revealed the need for innovative interventions in terms of introducing more physical activity and movement in a day, especially for women, said Pradeepa. She referred to Thandav, which is one such intervention, developed by Dr. R. M. Anjana, President of MDRF.

Thandav is a ten-minute routine that combines the physical exercise aspect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with enjoyable dance movements.

The routine thus makes the act of performing physical exercise more entertaining and recreational, and also more socially acceptable as girls and women can perform this easily at their homes, explained Pradeepa.

Anjana along with colleagues at MDRF, have scientifically investigated the impact of Thandav on the physical fitness of Indian girls and women and published papers in journals such as Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics.

Iranian Pop Star Who Sang Popular Protest Anthem Gets 3 Years In Jail

Iranian Pop Star Who Sang Popular Protest Anthem Gets 3 Years In Jail

Tehran, Iran:

An Iranian pop singer whose song became an anthem during mass protests more than a year ago has been sentenced to at least three years in prison, he said Friday.

Shervin Hajipour, 26, wrote and published “Baraye” during nationwide demonstrations triggered by the September 2022 death in custody of Mahsa Amini.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, had been arrested for allegedly violating the Islamic republic’s strict dress code for women.

On Friday, Shervin Hajipour said on his Instagram page that he had been sentenced to three years in prison for “inciting and provoking people to riot to disturb national security”.

He was also handed an eight-month sentence for “propaganda against the regime”.

It was not immediately clear when the verdict was issued, and it was not reported elsewhere.

Under Iranian law, jail sentences run concurrently, meaning Shervin Hajipour would serve three years behind bars.

“Baraye” was played at a White House celebration in March 2023 marking Nowruz, the Persian New Year.

A month earlier, US First Lady Jill Biden awarded Shervin Hajipour a special Grammy for best song for social change, calling the tune a “powerful and poetic call for freedom and women’s rights”.

Covering the neck and head has been compulsory for women in Iran since 1983, following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Mahsa Amini’s death sparked months-long protests which saw hundreds of people, including dozens of security forces, killed and thousands of others arrested.

Shervin Hajipour was briefly arrested during the protests.

In January, an Iranian court sentenced another pop singer who criticised the mandatory headscarf for women to one year in prison.

Mehdi Yerrahi’s sentence was changed to home confinement instead of jail time, due his health issues, his lawyer said.

2 killed in Texas wildfires

Smokehouse Creek Wildfire, fueled by high winds and dry air since Monday afternoon, has burnt more than 1,075,000 acres and become the largest blaze in Texas history, the Texas A&M Forest Service updated on Thursday. Currently it is only 3 percent contained.

Joyce Blankenship, an 83-year-old grandmother from the town of Stinnett, died in her burned home on Wednesday, local media reported.

Another woman, Cindy Owen, was driving in Texas’ Hemphill County south of Canadian on Tuesday afternoon when flames overtook her, said Sgt. Chris Ray of Texas Department of Public Safety. She was sent to hospital and died Thursday morning.

The wildfires in the Texas Panhandle have spread to neighboring Oklahoma, where at least 12 fires were burning, covering more than 115,000 acres, reports said.

Heat and high winds will likely cause “critical fire weather conditions again” on the weekend, the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the largest city of the Texas Panhandle, said on Thursday.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Tuesday issued a disaster declaration for 60 counties and said more counties could be added.

Pantex Plant, a major nuclear weapons facility in the United States, suspended its operation Tuesday night in response to nearby wildfires in the Texas Panhandle. The plant assembles and disassembles the country’s nuclear arsenal.

According to Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, it’s estimated that cattle deaths would be in the thousands, with more likely to come
