Medigadda Barrage: What the experts said

Hyderabad: Exposing the false campaign of the Congress on the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, retired engineers and experts on Friday stressed that the sinking of the pillars at the Medigadda Barrage could be rectified and asserted that the sinking was not due any lapse in the design.

The retired engineers and experts accompanied Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders led by working president KT Rama Rao to the Medigadda and Annaram barrages and made a few suggestions.

Former chairman of the Telangana Water Resources Development Corporation V Prakash Rao pointed out that Medigadda was just one component among many under the Kaleshwaram project.

“The Medigadda pillars could have sunk due to the heavy flood flow in July 2022 and not due to any other reasons,” Prakash Rao said, pointing out that if there were design lapses in the project as the Congress was trying to establish, then other pillars should also have sunk or suffered similar damage. All the three barrages, Medigadda, Sundilla and Annaram, together have 227 pillars, but only three pillars at Medigadda sunk. This again proves that it could have been due to the heavy floods in July last year. On a single day on July 15, 2022, 250 tmcft water flew downstream, he said.

“If BRS president K Chandrashekhar Rao was the Chief Minister, he would have constructed a ring bund or cofferdam near Kanepally pumphouse to lift water towards Kondapochamma reservoir to supply water to farmers in Yasangi,” Prakash Rao said, also stating that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had misled the Assembly by reading out only one paragraph of the report by retired engineers on the Medigadda barrage in the past.

Retired engineer Venkatesham, who inspected the barrages, said the sinking of piers was rectifiable easily. Under the stop plug arrangement, if the Minimum Drawdown level was maintained at 93ft in the barrage against 100 ft, pumps could be operated, he said.

The government should protect the interests of farmers and save public properties. Four months have already passed and only three months were left for the monsoon to arrive. Repair works should be taken up immediately and by doing so, the Congress government would be complimented, he said.

Another retired engineer Damodar Reddy also inspected the barrages.

Iranian nation frustrated enemies in past 45 years

“Today, any kind of development in Iran is monitored by well-wishers and ill-wishers; In all these 45 years, the Iranian nation has disappointed the ill-wishers and made the well-wishers hopeful in all fields,” Mohammad Movahedi-Azad said during his visit to elections headquarters at the Interior Ministry while speaking to the journalists.

In response to a question about the latest state of Friday’s election process and any irregularities and violations of rules, the Prosecutor-General of Iran said that, “We have established a headquarters for the prevention of election violations and irregularities in Tehran and the provinces for the past few months, and until today there have been no serious cases of violations and only a few cases that have been filed lawsuit against.”

Thousands of polling stations across Iran opened on Friday morning at 8 o’clock at the order of the Minister of Interior, Ahmed Vahidi to elect the members of the 12th round of the Iranian Parliament and the 6th round of the Assembly of Experts.

Gaza famine 'almost inevitable,' UN warns

The United Nations warns that in the absence of any changes in the Israeli regime’s ongoing genocidal war on the Gaza Strip, the coastal sliver is on course to experience all-out famine.

Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), made the remarks at a briefing in Geneva on Friday.

“If something doesn’t change, a famine is almost inevitable on the current trends,” he said, noting, “Once a famine is declared, it is too late for too many people.”

“We don’t want to get to that situation and we need things to change before that,” the official noted.

“We have to look at what more and more voices, more and more loudly, are saying about the food security situation across the Gaza Strip, in particular in the north.”

The remarks came a day after the United Nations human rights chief expressed dismay concerning the brutality with which the Israeli regime was waging the war.

“There appear to be no bounds to — no words to capture — the horrors that are unfolding before our eyes in Gaza,” Volker Turk told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

More than 30,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed as a result of the Israeli military onslaught so far.

Israel launched the campaign on October 7 last year following Operation al-Aqsa Storm, a surprise offensive by Gaza’s resistance movements against the occupied territories.

Concomitantly with the war, the regime has been enforcing a near-total siege on Gaza, which has reduced the flow of foodstuffs, medicine, electricity, and water into the Palestinian territory into a trickle.

Also on Friday, the World Health Organization’s spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said, “The system in Gaza is on its knees, it’s more than on its knees,” adding, “All the lifelines in Gaza have more or less been cut.”

"My Kidnappers, Let Me Go": Viswanathan Anand's Post Viral. Gives Details

Viswanathan Anand is not only a legend of Indian sport but he seems to have great sense of humour too. On Friday, the man, who has been instrumental in making chess attractive for many Indian kids, posted an interesting plea on social media medium X. “At the Airport! My Kidnappers, let me go. @alexandrabotez @itsandreabotez,” he wrote. At first sight, such a post would raise tension. The comment went viral on social media too. However, Viswanathan Anand quickly started a X thread to allay any fears of his fans.

Alexandra Botez and Andrea Botez are chess players, who also double up as content creators on social media. Viswanathan Anand’s post was in jest and it involved a chess move.

“Alexandra Botez told me I had to solve a chess position to win my freedom. Andrea asked what Black should play in this position. I told her Kd5, and they let me go,” Anand later added in a X thread.

“Extra explanation: Since this is a race, black should play Kd5 Slowing the white king march to the Queen side. And a quicker hostage release!” he added further.

Viswanathan is a five-time world champion. Anand also became the first grandmaster from India in 1988, and has the eighth highest peak FIDE rating of all-time. Last year he said that this is a golden time for Indian chess.  Anand was quoted as saying that he was amazed by the fact that most of the current lot possesses a 2,700-plus Elo rating, especially below 20 years of age, terming it “special”.

“I’m throwing in the title early, but they are a golden generation. They are all in the 2,700-plus group (Elo rating). And they’re all under 20. That just does not happen; it’s really something special.

“And what this means, and the reason I call them the golden generation, is they’re going to spend the next ten years at the top. With varying career trajectories, of course, but they’re going to spend the next 10 years being rivals and colleagues and friends and everything.”In Friday, he posted an interesting line on X.

Recently, the chess legend grabbed the limelight at Lollapalooza 2024 by enthusiastically singing along in the crowd during iconic singer Sting’s performance on stage. He delivered classic lines from The Police’s hit song “Roxanne,” and a video capturing Mr Viswanathan’s joyous moment went viral, prompting widespread applause on the internet.

Viswanathan took to social media platform X to share his fanboy moment, he wrote, “When I was very young, songs like “Every Breath You Take” and “Roxanne” by The Police made a huge impression on me. Fast forward to now, and I can say I know most of their songs and Sting’s solo albums as well. They’ve been a constant on my playlist over the years.”

Hyderabad: Putting an end to an eight-year-long wait, the Defence Ministry on Friday gave the green light for the construction of elevated corridors on defence lands in Hyderabad. The elevated corridors will ensure smooth flow of traffic along the Hyderabad-Nagpur National Highway and the Hyderabad-Karimnagar Rajiv Highway, promising a boost to regional transportation infrastructure.

With the construction of elevated corridors now approved, traffic issues plaguing routes from Hyderabad to Shamirpet and Hyderabad to Medchal are expected to be alleviated. It will also mark development of transportation routes towards North Telangana.

During his recent visit to Delhi, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had met union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and sought permission for the construction of elevated corridors on the defence lands. The Centre responded on Friday to the repeated requests from the State government and gave necessary approvals.

Responding to the same, the Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and officials from the Defence Ministry.

Earlier in 2016, the State government led by K Chandrashekhar Rao had initially proposed for transfer of defence lands in Hyderabad for construction of elevated skyways, corridors and link roads to ease traffic congestion in and around Hyderabad.

The issue was pursued with the Centre repeatedly with the State government, former Minister KT Rama Rao in particular, submitting representations to the Prime Minister and five Defence Ministers including Arun Jaitley, Manohar Parikkar, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and Rajnath Singh, in the last eight years.

The Municipal Administration department proposed to construct two elevated corridors from Paradise junction to Outer Ring Road junction near Kandlakoya on National Highway-44 and Jubilee Bus Station to Outer Ring Road junction near Shamirpet. The officials also sought transfer of defence land for creating link roads and widening roads. The State government also offered necessary land as well as funds in exchange for defence land. Though the State government followed up the issue regularly, there was no response from the Centre.

However, just a few days ahead of Modi’s visit to Telangana next week, the approval has come, finally clearing the way for the much awaited projects.

Meta Angers Australia With Plan To Stop Paying For News Content

Meta Angers Australia With Plan To Stop Paying For News Content

The decision pits Meta against the Australian government and its 2021 law. (Representational)

Sydney:

Meta Platforms said it will stop paying Australian news publishers for content that appears on Facebook, setting up a fresh battle with Canberra which had led the world with a law that forces internet giants to strike licencing deals.

News publishers and governments like Australia have argued that Facebook and Google unfairly benefit in terms of advertising revenue when links to news articles appear on their platforms. Meta has been scaling back its promotion of news and political content to drive traffic and says news links are now a fraction of users’ feeds.

Meta will discontinue a tab on Facebook which promotes news in Australia and the United States, it said in a statement, adding that it cancelled the news tab last year in the UK, France and Germany.

As a result, “we will not enter into new commercial deals for traditional news content in these countries and will not offer new Facebook products specifically for news publishers,” the statement added.

The decision pits Meta against the Australian government and its 2021 law.

“The idea that one company can profit from others’ investment, not just investment in capital but investment in people, investment in journalism, is unfair,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters.

“That’s not the Australian way,” he added.

The government is seeking advice from the Treasury Department and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) about its next steps.

Rod Sims, the former ACCC chair who oversaw the design of the law, called Meta’s reversal selfish and he was concerned about the impact on society as the decision undermined the quality of journalism which appears on social media.

“This is Meta thumbing its nose at the Australian parliament,” he said.

Under the 2021 law, the country’s government must decide whether it will appoint a mediator to set Meta’s fees and potentially fine Meta if it fails to cooperate. Most of Meta’s deals with Australian media ran for three years and are set to expire in 2024.

Meta is, however, not obligated to pay news publishers if it blocks users from reposting news articles as it did briefly in 2021. It has done the same in Canada since 2023 when the country passed similar laws. Meta said on Friday that publishers could continue posting news content on Facebook.

Tama Leaver, an internet studies professor at Curtin University, said Meta will be reluctant to escalate the dispute by stopping its users from posting news links in Australia and will more likely challenge the government in court if it intervenes.

“Meta is going ‘what are you going to do?’ and the Australian government has a real decision to make,” he said.

Australia’s biggest media outlets lambasted the decision, calling it an attack on the industry.

“Meta is using its immense market power to refuse to negotiate, and the government is right to explore every option for how the Media Bargaining Code’s powers can be used,” said News Corp Australasia Executive Chairman Michael Miller.

Nine Entertainment CEO Mike Sneesby said the decision failed to acknowledge the value that the media firm, which owns the Sydney Morning Herald and Australian Financial Review mastheads and a free-to-air television channel, created for Meta.

While no deal values have been disclosed, Australian media outlets have reported Facebook’s deals are worth A$70 million ($45 million) a year to the industry.

Google’s Australian media licencing deals mostly ran for five years, expiring in 2026. A spokesperson said the company has already started negotiations for deal renewals.

Many governments around the world remain keen on protecting their local news industries from being elbowed out of the online advertising market. Indonesia said last month it also plans to make large tech firms pay for news content.
