Exclusive: ‘I’ve arrived with fresh mandate to stop slaughter in Gaza’: Galloway

British politician George Galloway who has registered a landslide victory in a parliamentary by-election advocating for Gaza said he has “arrived with a fresh mandate to stop the slaughter in Gaza.”

Galloway on Thursday claimed a stunning victory in the Rochdale by-election.

“The first thing I am going to do on Wednesday – Prime Minister’s Questions – is I’m going to tell the prime minister that I have arrived with a fresh mandate, the only member of the House to do so, with the fresh mandate to stop the slaughter in Gaza,” Galloway said in an exclusive interview with Press TV on Friday.

“A ceasefire is necessary but not sufficient. A temporary pause, a humanitarian pause, a simple ceasefire is not enough. We need to an end to the occupation. We need the total withdrawal of the siege of Gaza,” he said.

“And we need the recognition of the Palestinian right to self-determination enshrined in international law, enshrined in UN Security Council resolutions, enshrined in Oslo agreements, all ignored. And Oslo agreement is now dead and buried. It’s been ignored for so long,” he said.

“Some 700 thousand illegal settlers are now living on the parts of Palestine that was supposed to be the Palestine state,” he noted.

“Some 30 years since the Oslo agreement, it’s time to raise the flag of one state. Call it the Holy Land in which Jews, Muslims and Christians live together as equal citizens before the law. These are kind of agreements I’ll be making in the Parliament,” he stated.

Israel began waging the onslaught against Gaza on October 7, following al-Aqsa Storm, a surprise operation staged by the coastal sliver’s resistance groups against the occupied territories.

At least 30,228 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and 71,377 others injured in the relentless Israeli aggression.

Grace, Ecclestone Power UP Warriorz To 6-Wicket Victory vs Gujarat Giants

Grace Harris made a powerful fifty that helped UP Warriorz negate a sluggish surface to register a facile six-wicket win over Gujarat Giants in their Women’s Premier League match on Friday.
Harris (60 not out, 33 balls, 9×4, 2×6) and skipper Alyssa Healy (33, 21b, 7×4) helped Warriorz hunt down 143 in 15.4 overs for their second win in the tournament. Giants were restricted to 142 for five after left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone (3/20) used a rough deck to her advantage.

Harris gave finishing touches to her good work with an outstanding innings.

The Australian right-hander used her reach and force to telling effect to keep the pressure on the Giants bowlers after Healy gave them a fantastic start in the Power Play.

The diminutive Australian smashed pacer Meghana Singh for three successive fours in the third over as the UP outfit reached 33 in just three overs, which they later swelled to 69 for two in the Power Play section.

The Giants also suffered a major blow when Harleen Deol had to limp off the field after she landed on her knees while trying to stop the ball near the ropes.

But the Gujarat side showed some signs of a comeback when they collected the quick wickets of Healy, debutante Chamari Athapathuthu and Shewta Sherawat to reduce UP to 90 for 4 in the 11th over.

They needed 53 more runs to finish the chase at this stage but Harris and Deepti Sharma (17 not out) amassed the runs in just 30 balls to propel their side to victory.

Earlier, Gujarat, in fact, made a fine start to their innings as Lara Wolvaardt (28, 26b, 4×4) helped them reach 41 in the Power Play for the loss of skipper Beth Mooney.

Wolvaardt smashed Anjali Sarvani for three fours in a row through the off-side as the pacer erred in line outside the off-stump.

But once the Power Play ended, the Giants slipped into a period of hibernation, going without a boundary for 23 balls, and the dismissal of Wolvaardt too did not help their cause.

It required a forceful 52-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Phoebe Litchfield (35, 26 balls) and Asheligh Gardner (30, 17 balls) to add a touch of respectability to their total.

Litchfield, who was dropped on 19 by Deepti Sharma off Ecclestone, brought her hockey background into her batting, using those supple wrists to manoeuvre the ball into the corners behind the wicketkeeper.

Her reverse scoop off left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad for a boundary was a treat to watch.

At the other end, Gardner was all about raw power and smart placement. Gardener muscled her Australian teammate Harris over mid-wicket for six as the Giants tried to make up for the lost time.

But the flowering alliance was snapped when Gardner’s attempt to reverse-scoop ended in the hands of Athapaththu near short fine leg.

In the same over, Litchfield was run out while trying to steal a quick single, as Saima Thakor‘s direct throw beat her to the crease.

Litchfield’s dismissal also ended the Giants’ hopes of raking in some quick runs in the last couple of overs.

'Islamist Extremists, Far-Right Groups Spreading Poison': UK PM Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak said that the government will soon unveil a “new, robust framework” to tackle extremism.

London:

Following weeks of simmering tension in the UK over the Gaza conflict, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak Friday said that the “time has come” to battle extremist forces as he warned “democracy itself is a target”.

In an unusual address from outside his Downing Street home, Sunak said that “in recent weeks and months, we have seen a shocking increase in extremist disruption and criminality.”

Regular marches protesting Israel’s military response to Hamas’ October 7th attacks have seen dozens arrested for anti-Semitic chanting and banners, inviting support for a proscribed organisation and assaulting emergency workers.

Right wing conter-protesters were also arrested when they descended on London for Remembrance Day events in November.

“Islamist extremists and far-right groups are spreading a poison. That poison is extremism,” said Sunak.

Matters came to a head last week when the Speaker of the House of Commons said he bucked procedure during a debate due to concerns about the safety of MPs.

Sunak said that the protests, a regular occurence on Saturdays in the capital, “had descended into intimidation, threats and planned acts of violence.”

“Now our democracy itself is a target. Council meetings and local events have been stormed.

“MPs do not feel safe in their home. Long-standing parliamentary conventions have been upended because of safety concerns,” he added.

The prime minister said that “police have a tough job in policing the protests” but that “we must draw a line.”

“I say this to the police, we will back up when you take action,” he added.

Sunak’s speech came as left-wing firebrand George Galloway was elected to the UK parliament after tapping into anger over the Israel-Hamas war in a chaotic by-election marred by allegations of anti-Semitism.

Sunak said it was “beyond alarming” that voters had elected a candidate “who dismisses the horror of what happened on October 7th, and who glorifies Hezbollah.”

The government will soon unveil a “new, robust framework” to tackle extremism, which will include backing for the counter-radicalisation Prevent programme and a demand for universities to stop extremist activity on campus, he explained.

“It is not enough to live side-by-side, we must live together, united by shared values and a shared commitment to this country,” said Sunak.

“The time has now come for us all to stand together to combat the forces of division,” he added.

Nuh:

Nuh Police on Friday arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly strangling his eight-year-old niece to death and burying her body in a field 3 km away from his village, said police. The police recovered the body Friday evening and placed it in the mortuary, they said.

The girl had gone missing under suspicious circumstances on Wednesday.

Her father approached police and said his daughter was playing with other children at home and went missing around 12 pm when he and his wife were away in the fields.

He filed a complaint, on the basis of which an FIR of missing person was registered at Ferozepur Jhirka Police Station on Thursday, said police.

The investigation led police to truck driver Abbas, who was arrested. During questioning, Abbas confessed to killing the girl and burying her body in Doha village. He is yet to reveal the motive behind the killing, police said.

At his instance, the girl’s body was exhumed and sent to Mandikheda district hospital for post mortem, said police.

“The accused used to work as a truck driver. We are questioning him and a post mortem will be conducted tomorrow by the board of doctors,” said Inspector Aman Kumar, SHO of Ferozepur Jhirka Police Station.

“Ab ki Baar, 400 paar…”: PM Modi’s pitch at Jharkhand public meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses at the foundation stone laying and inauguration of multiple developmental projects, in Sindri, Dhanbad district, Friday.

Dhanbad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated the “400 seats pitch” during his address to a public event in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad on Friday and said that the slogan of ‘400 paar’ is being raised because the country has faith in “Modi’s guarantee.”

Addressing a public rally in Dhanbad on Friday, PM Modi said that only one sound is audible everywhere and that is ‘Ab ki Baar, 400 paar’. “The slogan of ‘400 paar’ is being raised because the country has faith in Modi’s guarantee… I want to apologize that the ‘pandal’ is too small today.

Only 5 per cent of the people are inside, the rest 95 per cent are outside in the sun,” the Prime Minister said. He further said that the NDA would win over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha polls as the country is relying on Modi’s guarantee.

The PM hit out at the Congress and its allies saying that they were the enemies of positive development in the country.

“Congress and its alliance parties are the biggest enemies of development… The foundation stone of the Electricity power plant of North Karanpura was laid by former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee at the end of the previous century… After that, the scammer government of Congress came into power and this project was shut down… In 2014, I gave a guarantee of reviving this project. Today, a no. of houses are lightened because of this power plant” the Prime Minister said.

Meanwhile, at the public rally, Jharkhand BJP Jharkhand President Babulal Marandi accused the Opposition alliance of being neck deep in corruption.

“The INDI Alliance government in Jharkhand is busy looting… Even royals and kings might not have as much land as the former CM Hemant Soren’s family owns, all looted from the poor people,” Marandi said.

State Health Minister Banna Gupta welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the land of Birsa Munda. “We welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the land of Birsa Munda. PM Modi launched Ayushman Bharat on the soil of Jharkhand, hence I appeal to him that only 28 lakh people are getting the benefits of Ayushman Bharat but the rest 33, 50000 are still deprived of all benefits…In Modi’s guarantee, all non-issues have become issues but the real issues are yet not addressed,” Banna Gupta said.

Earlier, PM Modi unveiled development projects worth more than Rs 35,700 crore, an initiative focused on the fertiliser, rail, power, and coal sectors in Jharkhand. The Prime Minister is on a two-day visit to Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Bihar on March 1 and 2.

YSRCP targeting TDP leaders through Andhra Revenue Intelliegence: Chandrababu Naidu to Governor

File Photo

Vijayawada: Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu shot off a letter to Governor S Abdul Nazeer alleging that the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) is targeting his party leaders through the Andhra Pradesh State Directorate for Revenue Intelligence (APSDRI).

“This is to bring to Your Excellency’s notice about the manner in which theruling YSRCP is targeting opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders andcadre by weakening them economically and politically,” Naidu said in his letter.

“For this, the ruling YSRCP has formed the Andhra Pradesh State Directorate for Revenue Intelligence (APSDRI) and started targeting TDP leaders in order to weaken them financially and politically by threatening them. In the process, APSDRI instead of performing as per its official mandate, has turned into a weapon in the ruling YSRCP quiver to harass its dissenters and detractors,” the TDP chief added.

Naidu mentioned that the the APSDRI is “specifically targeting” his party leaders and cadre and going on a rampage in imposing fines, making arrests, and undertakingunscheduled and sudden searches of firms and houses.

The former Chief Minister said that after the “epic harassment” of TDP MLA Shri Yeluri Sambasavia Rao, the APSDRI has also targeted former Minister P Narayana in Nellore and senior TDP leader Prattipati Pullarao’s son P Sarath.

Naidu also claimed that the APSDRI took over Sarath’s case, which was already under inquiry by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Hyderabad.

“The ruling YSRCP has been using the Crime Investigation Department (CID) as its puppet to settle political scores and similarly formed APSDRI to target dissent voices and weaken them financially and politically by foisting false cases,” Naidu mentioned.

He added that several businesspeople have approached the court for justice after being unable to bear the harassment of APSDRI.

Naidu claimed that the YSRCP is going to lose in the forthcoming Assembly elections and hence it is targeting and harassing TDP leaders and their families in desperation. The Chief Minister appealed to the Governor to intervene in the matter and ensure that “such illegal and cheap tactics” are immediately stopped by the ruling YSRCP.

Verstappen On Pole In Bahrain In Boost To Red Bull And Christian Horner

Max Verstappen’s quest for a fourth consecutive Formula One world championship began in style on Friday with the Red Bull ace claiming pole for the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari will start alongside Verstappen on the front row for Saturday’s first of a record 24 races this year. Verstappen’s 33rd career pole and third in Bahrain was a welcome boost to Red Bull after a day of continued speculation surrounding team boss Christian Horner.
Horner, who had always denied any wrongdoing, was cleared by an internal investigation of allegations of controlling behaviour by a female colleague on Wednesday.

But he found himself under renewed pressure on Friday after private messages allegedly between him and a female staff member were leaked to Formula One officials and journalists.

Horner, who was on Friday supervising Red Bull’s cars in qualifying, said: “I won’t comment on anonymous speculation, but to reiterate, I have always denied the allegations.”

Verstappen ensured events on the track went more smoothly and he will be favourite to emulate last year’s result when he won the first of 19 races as he swept to his third title.

“That was a lot of fun, very happy to be on pole, to be honest a little bit unexpected,” said the Dutch driver.

“It was difficult to get the lap together, but we found the balance and the car came to us. It was close and I think the race will be close too, but I am confident. Let’s see.”

“I’m confident we’ve taken a step forward but we still think Red Bull are ahead in the race.”

The Mercedes of George Russell and Carlos Sainz in the other Ferrari fill the second row. Russell praised Mercedes for producing a car that he could build on.

“P3 is a good place to start,” he said.

Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull and Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin occupy the third row. Then came Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the two McLarens, with Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Nico Hulkenberg (Haas) rounding out the top 10.

Grumbling Verstappen

The session began in cool conditions as temperatures fell under the floodlights at Sakhir’s International Circuit where Bahrain’s maiden race took place 20 years ago.

The air temperature was 18, the track 21. Ferrari and the Alpines were the first on track ahead of the rest as cars slowed to pick their on-track time.

“They are all stopping,” grumbled Verstappen. “Can I go or not? I don’t want to stop.”

Once the action began in earnest, Alex Albon of Williams set the pace on softs followed in turn by Haas’s Hulkenberg, Norris and then Verstappen before Sainz took control in 1:29.90.

The Ferrari driver’s lap was quick enough to persuade him to miss the second runs, when pit lane etiquette was again an issue as Leclerc complained.

“I don’t agree with this,” he said after passing slow Alpine.

The first qualifying segment ended with Sainz on top as the Alpines made an early exit along with both Saubers and Williams’ Logan Sargeant.

After topping Thursday’s opening practice, Hamilton squeezed through in 15th place.  Leclerc topped the times on the second runs of Q2 and Sainz was third, sandwiching Verstappen in second, while Hamilton was fourth with a late lap.

In the final seconds of the top 10 shoot-out Verstappen improved to 1:29.179, enough to resist Leclerc by 0.228 seconds to launch his 2024 season in ominous fashion.

Exceptionally the Bahrain race and next weekend’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix are being staged on Saturdays to accommodate the Muslim holy period of Ramadan.
