Rajasthan Being Run By Centre Through Remote Control: Ashok Gehlot

The state doesn’t seem to have a government for the last 3 months, Ashok Gehlot said.

Jaipur:

Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday accused the Centre of governing the state through remote control and undermining the authority of the elected chief minister.

The state doesn’t seem to have a government for the last three months, he alleged.

He said that ministers are not able to appoint their private secretaries according to their wish and the Centre is implementing the Gujarat model in Rajasthan.

“It’s been two-three months of the BJP government in the state. There is a discussion in every household as to why there is no governance. I believe that only the chief minister cannot be blamed for it. It is a remote-controlled government which is against the spirit of democracy,” Mr Gehlot told reporters after moving into the new government bungalow from the official CM’s residence, now allotted to the new incumbent.

He added, “An elected Chief Minister has authority, and the government is run by that authority and it provides good governance. They (Centre) have remote-controlled the government. The chief secretary is the de facto chief minister and I have heard that deputy chief ministers are more powerful than the chief minister.” Reacting to his statements, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said all three bodies of democracy are working together in the state whereas in the previous government, the power was divided between two centres – apparently referring to the tussle between Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot.

Mr Gehlot earlier said if the authority of the chief minister is weakened, it’s the public which will suffer the most. “The chief minister cannot govern without authority.” The Congress leader said there is a possibility that people in the BJP may be “conspiring” against Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.

“What do you want? The Prime Minister should answer this. What does the Prime Minister want in the country?” he asked.

“This is also an example of the dictatorial tendencies reining supreme in the country … ‘Double-engine’ means both the engines should be of equal capacity but that is not the case here,” Mr Gehlot added.

Mr Meghwal said that the BJP government led by Bhajanlal Sharma has worked more in two months as compared to the two months of the Gehlot government.

“All three bodies including legislature, executive and judiciary are working together in the state whereas in the previous Congress government, there were two power centres. One was led by Ashok Gehlot whereas the other was led by Sachin Pilot,” Mr Meghwal said.

Kishan Contacted By Team India During England Series. This Was His Reply

Since the BCCI annual contract list was released on Wednesday, two names which have grabbed the attention were Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan with their. The two star players have been part of India’s planning in recent times but still found themselves excluded from  the BCCI contracts. According to reports and BCCI’s hint in one of its press releases, the reluctance of the duo to play in domestic cricket may have played a big part in both of them losing BCCI central contracts.

While there was no official reason given on why Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were dropped, one line in BCCI’s release gives a strong hint. “The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team,” the BCCI stated.

When Ishan Kishan had left India’s Tour of South Africa, the BCCI had said on December 17: “Mr Ishan Kishan has requested the BCCI to be released from the upcoming Test series against South Africa citing personal reasons. The wicket-keeper has subsequently been withdrawn from the Test squad.”

While it was expected that Ishan Kishan would play domestic cricket from his time away from the national team, the wicketkeeper-batter chose to remain absent from his state team Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy matches. Despite Indian cricket team coach Rahul Dravid clearly mentioning that he need to play some form of cricket to regain his place in the Indian squad, Ishan Kishan ignored the instruction.

Shreyas Iyer also excused himself from one of the Ranji Trophy matches for Mumbai due to injury. However, NCA’s report on his injury was contradictory, according to a report in Indian express.

Now, in a report by ESPN Cricinfo, it has been claimed that Ishan Kishan was contacted by the Indian cricket team management during the ongoing India vs England Test series. The reports added that Kishan replied that he was not ready yet. In his absence, Dhruv Jurel got the opportunity and won the Player of the Match award.

Policing Not Tailored To Serve Specific Religious Community: Delhi Court

Policing Not Tailored To Serve Specific Religious Community: Court On Plea By Pardanashin Woman

“Pardanashin”, the court said, was used in the past in the context of women who were not empowered.

New Delhi:

Policing is not tailored to serve the interests of any specific religious or cultural community and there can’t be any room for anonymity in investigations, the Delhi High Court said on Friday as it refused to pass any directions to law enforcement agencies to show “greater sensitivity” towards the needs of “pardanashin” (veiled) women.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed an investigating agency has to follow the principles of impartiality, fairness, and reasonability, and directing them to act in a particular way that may be against the interest of society would be unjust and may leave scope for misuse.

“The law enforcement agencies and their investigations cannot be driven by religious practices but have to be community and safety driven,” the court said.

The court’s order came on a petition by a ‘purdahnashin’ Muslim woman who sought directions for sensitising the Delhi Police about the sacrosanct religious, social customs and practices observed by women who observe ‘purdah’ either as a religious belief or as a matter of personal choice.

The court said the fundamental rights, including those enshrined under Article 25 of the Constitution in relation to freedom of religion, are surrendered in favour of the safety of the country and community, irrespective of the gender of the accused.

“It is crucial to recognize that policing is not tailored to serve the interests of any specific religious or any cultural community alone. Rather, this Court holds that it has to be essentially guided by the principles of impartiality, fairness, and reasonability,” said the court.

“Issuance of an additional direction to first inquire from a woman as to whether she is a pardanashin woman or she wears any form of veil according to her religious belief or customary practices, and then to grant additional time and notice to wear pardah or veil, in addition to following the safeguards already provided in law, on the ground of exhibiting awareness and sensitivity of the police will be inviting an accused to misuse the directions and utilise the time so gained, at times also on falsehood, to abscond or destroy evidence,” the court observed.

The court said the concept of pardanashin women in the modern era was “less relevant”, especially in big cities, and it would rather use the phrase “women who observe a particular dress code in accordance with their beliefs and faith”.

“Pardanashin”, the court said, was used in the past in the context of women who were not empowered nor were considered well conversant with worldly affairs.

It observed that among the Hindus, there was no mandatory provision to wear a veil or “ghoonghat” and the same was the scenario for Sikh women. However, everyone made their individual choices.

The court also noted that police officers are bound by the provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure as well as judicial precedents that already provide for measures for upholding the dignity of women while either arresting or searching them or carrying out any investigation.

“In police investigations, there cannot be any room for anonymity, as identification is essential for ensuring justice and maintaining security. Allowing anonymity under the guise of religious practice or personal choice could open the door to abuse and hinder the investigation process,” it said.

“While this Court maintains that sensitivity towards cultural diversity and equipping police personnel with knowledge, skill and attitudes to deal with females will be of utmost importance, at the same time, directing the police to act in interest of a particular gender in a particular way, which may be opposed to the interest of society at large, will be unjust,” it stated.

Represented by lawyer M Sufian Siddiqui, the petitioner Muslim woman had sought an impartial probe and action against personnel who had allegedly forcibly taken her to a police station without her veil and subjected her to “degrading treatment”.

She had claimed that on the intervening night of November 5-6 last year, at around 3 a.m., certain police officials had barged into her house, held an illegal search, paraded her without her veil to the police station and then detained her for 13 hours in flagrant violation of law.

Iyer, Kishan "Will Get" BCCI Contract If This Condition Is Met: Report

All is not finished for Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan. The duo is in the headlines since the time they were excluded from the latest BCCI contracts. Despite being firmly in the BCCI’s scheme of things in the last couple of years, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were excluded. Their axing is being perceived as a message from the cricket governing body to players who may show reluctance to play in domestic cricket.

Ishan Kishan, since he took a break midway into India’s Tour of South Africa, has been practising in Baroda rather than playing in Ranji Trophy for his state Jharkhand. Shreyas Iyer recently said that he was injured and missed a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai. However, according to a report in The Indian Express, the NCA report on him contradicted his claim.

Both of them did not find a place in the BCCI annual contract list. “Please note that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not considered for the annual contracts in this round of recommendations,” the BCCI said in a release.

“The BCCI has recommended that all athletes give precedence to participating in domestic cricket during periods when they are not representing the national team, a statement in the release added.

Cricket news website ESPNcricinfo was told by an official that the duo may still win a BCCI contract.

“The selectors don’t doubt their ability,” a BCCI official told ESPNcricinfo.

“But if the NCA is saying you are fit and you are not making yourself available for the Test series, how can the BCCI offer you a contract? After the IPL, if they happen to get selected and fulfil the criteria of the number of matches required for a pro-rata contract, they will be awarded a contract.”

The BCCI release has a point mentioned in this regard. “Athletes who meet the criteria of playing a minimum of 3 Tests or 8 ODIs or 10 T20Is within the specified period will automatically be included in Grade C on a pro-rata basis,” it said. The period that is being implied is from October 1st, 2023 to September 30th, 2024.

Israeli Bombing Kills 7 Hostages In Gaza, Says Hamas

Israeli Bombing Kills 7 Hostages In Gaza, Says Hamas

Hamas seized around 250 Israelis and foreigners during the October 7 attack on Israel (File)

Hamas said on Friday that seven more hostages seized during its unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7 had died because of Israeli military operations in Gaza.

“After examination and scrutiny during recent weeks, we have confirmed the martyrdom of a number of our mujahideen and the killing of seven enemy prisoners in the Gaza Strip as a result of the Zionist (Israeli) bombing,” said a statement attributed to a spokesman for its military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades.

Hamas seized around 250 Israelis and foreigners during the October 7 attack on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of about 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official figures.

Around 130 are still held captive.

Prior to Friday’s announcement by Hamas, which AFP could not independently confirm, this included 31 that Israel said were presumed dead, among them six soldiers.

Friday’s Hamas statement said the number of hostages killed as a result of Israeli military operations “may have exceeded” 70.

The reason for the discrepancy was not clear.

During a week-long truce in November a total of 105 hostages were released, the Israelis among them in exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

Egyptian, Qatari and US mediators are scrambling to lock down a new truce in Gaza, where Israel’s campaign to eliminate Hamas has killed at least 30,228 people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-ruled territory’s health ministry.

In telephone talks on Thursday, the three countries’ leaders set out what a ceasefire deal could look like, the White House said.

“The leaders underscored that the release of hostages would result in an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza over a period of at least six weeks,” the White House said.

“They exchanged views on how such a prolonged period of calm could then be built into something more enduring.”

"Not To Worry": DK Shivakumar After Bengaluru Cafe Blast

'Not To Worry': DK Shivakumar After Bengaluru Cafe Blast

“It was a low-intensity blast,” said DK Shivakumar

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Friday said that the Rameshwaram cafe blast is being investigated from all angles, adding that 7-8 teams have been formed to probe the incident.

DK Shivakumar also stated that a youth came and kept a small bag, which exploded after an hour.

He has also aked the people of Bengaluru not to worry.

“It was a low-intensity blast. A youth came and kept a small bag, which exploded after an hour. About 10 people received injuries. 7-8 teams formed to probe the incident. We are looking from all angles. I ask every Bangalorean not to worry,” he said.

As many as 10 people have been injured in Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram Cafe blast.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Tejasvi Surya on Friday said that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah must give free hand to agencies to investigate the Rameshwaram cafe blast incident, adding that the State government is repeatedly changing its narrative on the matter.

Tejasvi Surya, who represents Bengaluru South constituency in Lok Sabha, questioned the Chief Minister’s Siddaramaiah’s government intentions over the incident.

“At first, they tried the narrative of cylinder blast. Now, they are trying the narrative of business rivalry. Why can’t the Congress Govt allow the investigation agencies to do their job? Why preempt? Why prompt? Vote Bank compulsions? CM Siddaramaiah must give free hand to investigate and give clear answers to people of Bengaluru,” Tejasvi Surya posted on X.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and State Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, along with DGP Alok Mohan, also visited the Bengaluru explosion site for inspection.

A team from the National Investigation Agency also visited the explosion site in the Whitefield area.

Earlier today, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the accused involved in Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram cafe will be traced and punished, adding that opposition parties should refrain from indulging in politics over the incident.

Addressing reporters in Mysuru, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said, “CCTV footage from the cafe is being examined. It has come to be known that someone had left a bag at the cafe. The accused in the incident will be punished.”

Asserting that “multiple explosions have also taken place in previous governments,” the Chief Minister said, “This incident has happened in our government. Disciplinary and strict action will be taken against those involved. Politics should not be done in this matter.”

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party leader PC Mohan expressed concerns over the explosion that took place in Bengaluru’s Rameshwaram Cafe and urged the administration to investigate the incident.

In a post on X, the BJP Lok Sabha MP from Bengaluru Central, PC Mohan, said, “Concerned to hear about the mysterious blast at Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru Central Parliamentary Constituency. My thoughts are with the affected individuals and their families. Urging authorities to investigate and ensure the safety of all citizens. Stay safe, Bengaluru.”

A security guard working at the Rameshwaram Cafe who was present at the time of the incident said, “I was standing outside the cafe. Many customers had come to the hotel. Suddenly there was a loud sound and a fire broke out, causing injuries to the customers inside the hotel.”

The Rameshwaram Cafe is one of the popular hangouts and is usually extremely crowded during lunch hours. Further details are awaited.

UK Calls For "Urgent Investigation" Into Gaza Aid Convoy Deaths

UK Calls For 'Urgent Investigation' Into Gaza Aid Convoy Deaths

Over 100 people were killed after Israeli forces fired on crowd during aid distribution in Gaza.

London:

The UK on Friday called for “an urgent investigation and accountability” after the deaths of more than 100 Palestinians during an aid delivery in Gaza.

“The deaths of people in Gaza waiting for an aid convoy yesterday were horrific,” foreign minister David Cameron said.

“There must be an urgent investigation and accountability. This must not happen again,” he said.

He said the incident could not be separated from the “inadequate aid supplies”, calling the current situation “simply unacceptable”.

“Israel has an obligation to ensure that significantly more humanitarian aid reaches the people of Gaza,” he added, calling on it to open more crossings and eliminate bureaucratic obstacles.

“This tragedy only serves to underscore the importance of securing an immediate humanitarian pause,” Cameron said.

Number Of Agencies Have Concerns About "Sideloading" On iPhone, Says Apple

Number Of Agencies Have Concerns About 'Sideloading' On iPhone, Says Apple

Apple said “sideloading” has sparked concerns from several government agencies, users (Representational)

A number of government agencies in the European Union and elsewhere have voiced concerns about security risks as Apple opens up its iPhones and iPads to rival app stores to comply with EU tech rules, Apple said on Friday.

Under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), from March 7 Apple will be required to offer alternative app stores on iPhones and allow developers to opt out of using its in-app payment system, which charges fees of up to 30%.

The US tech giant, which on Jan. 24 detailed the changesto bring its App Store in line with the EU rules, said “sideloading” – installation of applications on a mobile device without using its dedicated app store – has sparked concerns from both EU and non-EU government agencies and users.

Allowing the practice is among reforms that some lawmakers hope will help open up the market for apps.

“These agencies – especially those serving essential functions such as defense, banking, and emergency services – have reached out to us about these new changes,” Apple said in a guidance paper.

It said the agencies wanted assurances that they would be able to prevent government employees from sideloading apps onto government-purchased iPhones and that several said they planned to block sideloading on every device they manage.

“One EU government agency informed us that it had neither the funding nor the personnel to review and approve apps for its devices, and so planned to continue to rely on Apple and the App Store because it trusts us to comprehensively vet apps,” Apple said.

The company did not provide details on the number of concerned agencies and the countries where they are located.

Firms such as Fortnite creator Epic Games and Spotify Technology, have for years said that Apple’s commissions and restrictions impede their businesses.

"Raised Issues Of State": Mamata Banerjee Meets PM Modi In Kolkata

'Raised Issues Of State': Mamata Banerjee Meets PM Modi In Kolkata

She said she also took up the issue of the state’s pending dues with the PM.

Kolkata:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who interacted with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Raj Bhavan on Friday evening, called it a courtesy meeting as per protocol.

Banerjee said she also took up the issue of the state’s pending dues with the PM.

“I mentioned the issues of the state to the prime minister, besides having a chat with him,” Banerjee told reporters after the meeting.

Asked about the issue of the Centre’s dues to the state, which the ruling TMC has been flagging frequently, Banerjee said, “I raised that matter also.”

PM Modi, who is on a two-day tour of West Bengal from Friday, will stay the night at Raj Bhavan.

Banerjee’s convoy entered the governor’s house shortly after the prime minister arrived there.

Taking to X, Governor C V Ananda Bose said he received the PM at the Raj Bhavan.

Bose had also attended the prime minister’s official programme at Arambagh earlier in the day, where Modi inaugurated, dedicated and laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 7,200 crore.

In December last year, Banerjee had met PM Modi in New Delhi to press for the release of the state’s dues.

According to the TMC, the Centre owed Rs 1.18 lakh crore to West Bengal.

The Union government has said it released on Thursday two tranches of tax devolution to all states, with West Bengal receiving Rs 10,692 crore, the fourth highest amount after Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

The state government commenced payment of dues to approximately 30 lakh MGNREGA workers on Monday, amounting to Rs 2,700 crore, pending since March 2022.

The withholding of West Bengal’s MGNREGA dues by the Centre has been a focal point in the state’s political discourse for the past one year.
