Chief Justice Leads Supreme Court's Rural Outreach In Rann Of Kutch

Chief Justice Leads Supreme Court's Rural Outreach In Rann Of Kutch

CJI Chandrachud is joined by Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Bela M Trivedi.

New Delhi:

In a move to enhance accessibility to justice and foster a direct dialogue with the common people, the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, has embarked on an unprecedented journey to rural India. The historical initiative, aimed at connecting with the grassroots, has seen the top echelons of the judiciary convene in the Rann of Kutch area of Gujarat for a two-day programme.

This conference, a first of its kind in the nation’s history, brings together 250 district judges from lower courts nationwide, alongside representatives from all the High Courts. The event, spanning Saturday and Sunday, will see Chief Justice Chandrachud and his fellow judges engage directly with district judges.

CJI Chandrachud is joined by Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Bela M Trivedi. Of particular significance, Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Surya Kant are anticipated to assume the role of Chief Justice in the future.

According to Supreme Court sources, CJI Chandrachud has envisioned a judiciary that actively reaches out to the common people, transcending the traditional courtroom setting. The idea involves organising programs to address issues at the grassroots level.

After e-filing, virtual hearings, live streaming of constitutional cases and translation of judgments in regional languages, the Supreme Court hopes that this campaign, to reach out to the common people, too will help maintain a transparent and accessible judiciary.

In agreement with the CJI, senior judges Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Surya Kant concurred that reaching out directly to the general public is an effective means of bridging the gap between the judiciary and the public. Subsequent discussions among the judges led to the decision to organise a session where direct interactions could take place with lower court judges, addressing concerns related to technology, resources, and other logistical aspects.

The selection of Kutch in Gujarat as the venue for this historic event was a carefully considered decision. CJI Chandrachud, in consultation with fellow judges, opted for Kutch to facilitate open discussions and enable the formulation of effective solutions for challenges faced by the judiciary in the digital age. Additionally, Justice Bela Trivedi, being from Gujarat, was a valuable addition to the delegation, ensuring a nuanced understanding of local dynamics.

As the Supreme Court pioneers this novel approach to connect with the masses, the conference in Kutch holds the promise of fostering a more inclusive and responsive judiciary.

'He's The Next R Ashwin': England Great's Big Praise For Young Spinner

England’s young spinner Shoaib Bashir has garnered a lot of attention with his bowling skills on Indian pitches during England’s ongoing tour to the Asian nation. 20-year-old Bashir, a right-arm off-break bowler, made his England debut in Visakhapatnam on February 2. In his first game, he picked four wickets before missing the Rajkot match. Bashir adapted to the Indian conditions futher better when he played his second Test match in Ranchi. He picked 8 wickets in the game, leading England’s fightback.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan heaped praise on Shoaib Bashir and termed him the ‘next Ravichandran Ashwin’.

“It’s been a fantastic week for English cricket. One of the great weeks, celebrating another world-class superstar that we’ve unearthed, Shoaib Bashir. That’s what we’re celebrating. Second Test match, eight wickets, he’s the new Ravi Ashwin, and we’ve unearthed him. So, we’re celebrating a new superstar in English cricket,” Vaughan told Club Prairie Fire‘s YouTube channel.

India have taken an unassailable lead of 3-1 in the five-match series after winning the Ranchi Test by 5 wickets. While the hosts will aim to better the lead to finish things on a high, England too will eye a comeback. The final match is set to take place in Dharamsala.

Stating that England have been the better team in the series, Vaughan backed the visitors to win the final game.

“I think it’s going to be a fresh one in Dharamsala, so I expect England to win. They’ve been the better team in the series, as they were in the Ashes. If you go session by session, England have looked a better team. I’m saying looked a better team, but we don’t play series now to win them,” Vaughan said.

"If The Party Tells Me…": Tamil Nadu BJP Chief On Contesting 2024 Polls

'If The Party Tells Me...': Tamil Nadu BJP Chief On Contesting 2024 Polls

Tamil Nadu BJP Chief K Annamalai said that he will abide by any decision the party takes.

Chennai:

Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai on Friday termed as ‘speculations’, him contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls but said he will abide by any decision the party takes.

The former IPS officer said he had no “personal prejudice or any likes and dislikes in BJP.” “Whatever the party tells me I have to obey, that is the nature of the party. Today the party has asked me to complete the state level yatra (En Manna En Makkal) and we have just finished that,” he told reporters here.

He said the BJP has “given me some responsibility” to ensure the growth of the party in the state and he was doing that.

Apparently referring to the upcoming Lok Sabha contest, he said, “tomorrow morning if the party tells me, do that, I will do that.” “I am not going to respond to speculations. Whatever our senior national leadership decides, my duty is to obey and make sure it is implemented on the ground,” the state BJP chief added.

To a question on Udhayanidhi’s strident criticism of BJP, indicating it could hardly make any impact in the elections, Mr Annamalai said the state minister is a “failed actor,” referring to the DMK leader’s cinema stint.

Mr Udhayanidhi was in politics “with his grandfather (the late M Karunanidhi) and father’s (MK Stalin) name…what social service has he done…did he help the poor?” Mr Annamalai asked.

To a question on the TN BJP greeting Stalin in ‘Chinese’ on his birthday, Mr Annamalai said he did not find anything offensive about it.

“On behalf of @bjptnmediacell, here’s wishing our Honourable CM Thiru @mkstalin avargal a happy birthday in his favourite language! May he live a long and healthy life!” it said, with an image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP leaders including JP Nadda and Annamalai, besides that of the TN CM with some message in what seemed to be in Chinese.

It appeared to an apparent dig at the recent controversy over a ‘China flag’ in a DMK advertisement issued in connection with an ISRO launch complex coming up in the state.

Asked about this, Mr Annamalai said DMK leader and MP “Kanimozhi said China is not an enemy country. So, what’s wrong in wishing our Chief Minister in Chinese. That is what our IT wing people have done. I don’t find anything offensive,” Mr Annamalai added.

At a rally in Tirunelveli on Wednesday, PM Modi strongly criticised the DMK for being ‘oblivious’ to the nation’s achievements in space sector, after the newspaper advertisement by a state minister on the spaceport kicked up a row over what the BJP claimed had a ‘Chinese flag’.

The Tamil Nadu BJP had then alleged that in an advertisement in a daily the DMK used ‘Chinese flag’ and ‘Chinese language’ to claim credit for bringing the new ISRO complex at Kulasekarapattinam, located near Thoothukudi in the state.

On Thursday, DMK leader and Fisheries Minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan who issued the advertisement had said it was a gaffe by the designer.

The minister, who had given the advertisement on behalf of his party, stressed that it was only a mistake and they (DMK) had no other intentions.

The Numbers Game In Varanasi, PM Modi's Constituency

The constituency has also been the stage for the electoral battles of two Prime Ministers.

The battle ended with Narendra Modi emerging victorious with a margin of over 3 lakh votes, but Mr Kejriwal of the AAP also managed to get over 2 lakh people voting for him.

The constituency has also been the stage for the electoral battles of two Prime Ministers – PM Modi and former PM Chandra Shekhar, who won the seat in 1977 by a staggering 47.9% margin. It is also one of only eleven constituencies in Uttar Pradesh that has never been won by the Samajwadi Party or the Bahujan Samaj Party.

2014 Strategy

Before PM Modi, the Varanasi seat was held by BJP veteran Murli Manohar Joshi. In 2014, the party as aware that its road to ousting the Congress and coming to power at the Centre would be through Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, the highest of any state. It was also aimed at influencing neighbouring Bihar and contests in its 40 Lok Sabha seats.

Having paved the way for the BJP to get an absolute majority on its own, the seat was picked by the Prime Minister in 2019 and he won against the Samajwadi Party’s Shalini Yadav with a stunning margin of over 4.7 lakh votes.

Hindus make up 75% of the total population in the Varanasi constituency, 20% are Muslim and 5% are from other religions. It has a 65% per cent urban population and 35% rural. Of the total number of residents, 10.1% are from the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes account for 0.7%.

The city has evolved significantly under PM Modi’s tenure, with initiatives like the Kashi Vishwanath Temple corridor project reflecting its enhanced stature on India’s political and cultural map.

With Varanasi going to the Congress in its seat-sharing deal with the Samajwadi Party for 2024, speculation is rife that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra may make her electoral debut from the constituency. While the BJP has also not officially announced the candidate for the seat, PM Modi is likely to contest from there again.

Explained: BJP's New Strategy To Pick Candidates For 2024 Polls

The BJP has harnessed technology to solicit feedback from the grassroots level.

New Delhi:

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to announce today its list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The BJP, according to sources, employed a multi-layered and exhaustive process, encompassing public feedback, internal evaluations, and high-level strategic discussions, to select the candidates poised to represent the party in the upcoming electoral battle.

In a late-night meeting yesterday, attended by senior leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda, the ruling party held extensive discussions on candidates for the 543 Lok Sabha seats ahead of the Election Commission’s formal poll schedule announcement. The general expectation is that the elections will be held in April-May.

On-Ground Approach

The BJP has harnessed technology to solicit feedback from the grassroots level. Using the Namo App, the public was given a platform to voice their opinions on the performance of incumbent MPs, and in a departure from conventional methods, the BJP sought the opinions of the people on the ground by inquiring about the three most popular leaders in each area. This bottom-up approach, according to the party, aimed to ensure that the candidates resonated with the sentiments and aspirations of the local population.

Over the past two years, The BJP has continually sought feedback from its MPs, evaluating their performance and addressing concerns.
To further enhance the decision-making process, the BJP reached out to survey agencies to compile comprehensive reports on each parliamentary constituency.

Ministers were tasked with visiting Lok Sabha seats, compiling reports, and providing valuable insights into the performance of incumbent MPs.

The gathered information from ministers and organisational sources was then collated in state-level election committee meetings, laying the foundation for the final selection process. Subsequent to these deliberations, the core BJP group of each state engaged in discussions with top leaders like Mr Nadda, Home Minister Shah, and general secretary BL Santosh.

The BJP’s outreach extended beyond party lines, with concerted efforts to attract candidates from other parties as well. The BJP leadership made it clear that the tickets of MPs with subpar performance would be revoked without hesitation. At least 60-70 incumbent MPs might face ticket cancellations to make way for newer faces.

The party has said that many of its MPs belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community are expected to contest again. In the 2019 general elections, the BJP witnessed success as 85 of its OBC MPs emerged victorious.

New Candidates, Old Faces

In the meeting which began close to 11 pm yesterday and lasted for over four hours, the BJP, according to party sources, has prioritised capturing or improving its standing in seats it contested unsuccessfully in the 2019 elections.

It is anticipated that several Union ministers, including Bhupender Yadav, Dharmendra Pradhan, and Mansukh Mandaviya, could be nominated for the general elections. Notably, the party opted not to extend another Rajya Sabha term to these ministers during the recent polls to the Upper House of Parliament.

TDP leaders through Andhra Revenue Intelliegence: Chandrababu Naidu to Governor

Vijayawada: Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu shot off a letter to Governor S Abdul Nazeer alleging that the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) is targeting his party leaders through the Andhra Pradesh State Directorate for Revenue Intelligence (APSDRI).

“This is to bring to Your Excellency’s notice about the manner in which theruling YSRCP is targeting opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders andcadre by weakening them economically and politically,” Naidu said in his letter.

“For this, the ruling YSRCP has formed the Andhra Pradesh State Directorate for Revenue Intelligence (APSDRI) and started targeting TDP leaders in order to weaken them financially and politically by threatening them. In the process, APSDRI instead of performing as per its official mandate, has turned into a weapon in the ruling YSRCP quiver to harass its dissenters and detractors,” the TDP chief added.

Naidu mentioned that the the APSDRI is “specifically targeting” his party leaders and cadre and going on a rampage in imposing fines, making arrests, and undertakingunscheduled and sudden searches of firms and houses.

The former Chief Minister said that after the “epic harassment” of TDP MLA Shri Yeluri Sambasavia Rao, the APSDRI has also targeted former Minister P Narayana in Nellore and senior TDP leader Prattipati Pullarao’s son P Sarath.

Naidu also claimed that the APSDRI took over Sarath’s case, which was already under inquiry by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Hyderabad.

“The ruling YSRCP has been using the Crime Investigation Department (CID) as its puppet to settle political scores and similarly formed APSDRI to target dissent voices and weaken them financially and politically by foisting false cases,” Naidu mentioned.

He added that several businesspeople have approached the court for justice after being unable to bear the harassment of APSDRI.

Naidu claimed that the YSRCP is going to lose in the forthcoming Assembly elections and hence it is targeting and harassing TDP leaders and their families in desperation.

The Chief Minister appealed to the Governor to intervene in the matter and ensure that “such illegal and cheap tactics” are immediately stopped by the ruling YSRCP.

R Praggnanandhaa Blunders Again, Goes Down To Rapport

Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa blundered for the second day running and lost to Richard Rapport of Romania in the third round of the Prague Masters Chess tournament underway in Prague. After briefly going ahead of Viswanthan Anand and attaining the top Indian status in the live rating list, this double blow cost the Indian dearly, and now a lot of hard-work remains in the last six rounds of the 10-player round-robin contest. It was drama all over, as Praggnanandhaa was not the only one to blow away his chances. Nodirbek Abdusattarov of Uzbekistan turned the tables on local star David Navara from a nearly hopeless position when the latter failed to keep his nerves under pressure after attaining a winning position.

The all-Indian duel between Vidit Gujrathi and D Gukesh ended in a stalemate with neither player able to force matters, while overnight sole leader Parham Maghsoodloo of Iran was held to a draw by top German Vincent Keymer.

In the other game of the day, Nguyen Than Dai Van of Czech Republic defeated Mateusz Bartel of Poland from what was a complicated endgame.

Meanwhile, in another news coming in from Shenzen in China, Arjun Erigaisi become the new India number one defeating Xiangyu Yu of China in the first round of the Shenzen Masters.

As things stand here, Abdusattarov joined Maghsoodloo in the lead on 2.5 points out of a possible three and the two are now trailed by Gukesh and Rapport with 2 points apiece. Gujrathi stands at fifth spot with 1.5 points, a half point ahead of Praggnanandhaa, Navara, Dai Van and Keymer. Bartel, with just a half point, is at the bottom of the table.

It was simply not Praggnanandhaa’s day. The Indian did everything right except going past the finish line in his game against Rapport. The Hungarian-turned-Romanian is known for his uncompromising style and off-beat openings. The King’s Indian was no exception as Rapport chose something uncommon at this level and Praggnanandhaa made rapid progress in the centre before launching a king-side attack.

Rapport was looking quite lost at one point in the middle game but hung in there till the Indian faltered. The game changed quickly thereafter as Rapport found some study-like defense and romped home.

Gukesh could not make much headway with his white pieces against Gujrathi out of a Berlin defense game. The middle game saw routine exchanges and the players quickly arrived at a minor pieces endgame that was just level.

Results round 3 (Indians unless stated): Vincent Keymer (Ger, 1) drew with Parham Maghsoodloo (Iri, 2.5); R Praggnanandhaa (1) lost to Richard Rapport (Rou, 2); Nodirbek Abdusattarov (Uzb, 2.5) beat David Navara (Cze, 1); Mateusz Bartel (Pol, 0.5) lost to Nguyen Thai Dai Van (Cze, 1); D Gukesh (2) drew with Vidit Gujrathi (1.5).
