Ham operators come to rescue of patient on train, provide medicine

Khammam: Two Ham (Amateur radio) operators have come to the rescue of a patient on board a train and provided him with medicines, which he needed urgently.
A Bengali man, Bishwamay Bose of Nager Bazar, Dum Dum in Kolkata, who was working in Hyderabad, fell ill with multiple health issues a few days ago, after which his brother Sanmay Bose came to Hyderabad to take him back home.

They boarded the Secunderabad – Shalimar Weekly SF Express Train (22850) on Friday. As the journey began, Bishwamay’s condition worsened and he complained of pain in the neck, forehead and could not speak.

A doctor on board the train checked him and suggested some medicine, which could not be obtained by any means as the train could not be stopped. Sanmay then called their father Bishwanath Bose and explained the situation.

Bishwanath, a social worker and member of the West Bengal Inter-Agency Group (IAG), immediately posted a message on the IAG’s WhatsApp group. West Bengal Radio Club secretary Ambarish Nag Biswas, who goes by Ham Radio call sign VU2JFA and member of the IAG, responded to the message.

He then contacted a Hyderabad-based ham operator, Sai Likhith, who goes by call sign VU2TFN and requested his help explaining the situation. The train was scheduled to halt at Visakhapatnam railway station at 3.10 pm. The time in hand to procure the medicine and catch the train was one hour.

Biswas gave Likhith the details of the train coach, berth number and the Likhith, who was in Visakhapatnam that day, jumped into action, bought the medicine he was told to procure and reached the railway station just in time. He handed over the medicine to Sanmay much to the relief of the patient.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Biswas informed that Bishwanath called him on Friday night that both his sons reached Kolkata safely. He thanked Likhith for his timely help saying that ham radio operators were always dependable in times of emergency.

BJP Likely To Release Its 1st Lok Sabha Candidates' List Today: Sources

The names of PM Modi, Amit Shah are likely to be there on the first candidate list of the BJP.

New Delhi:

The BJP is expected to release the first list of candidates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections this evening, sources said. The list that is said to be announced at a BJP press conference at 6 pm comes days after back-to-back late-night meetings in Delhi. The BJP may also announce new allies in the National Democratic Alliance or NDA, they said.

The BJP’s Central Election Committee (CEC) met on Thursday night as its members, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi who chaired the meeting, held deliberations to finalise the first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls expected to be held in April-May. The ruling party is looking to name its candidates for the Lok Sabha seats before the Election Commission’s poll schedule announcement. The meeting was attended by leaders from various states – Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Gujarat’s Bhupendra Patel, Madhya Pradesh’s Mohan Yadav, Chhattisgarh’s Vishnu Deo Sai, Uttarakhand’s Pushkar Singh Dhami and Goa’s Pramod Sawant. State leaders usually attend the CEC meeting when candidates for constituencies in their states are discussed.

Earlier, the sources told NDTV that the BJP may announce more than 100 names that will include heavyweights such as PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP, the sources claim, intends to name most of its candidates well before poll dates are announced to ramp up pressure on its rival, the Congress-led INDIA bloc, which is still facing roadblocks in seat-sharing deals in many states.

As per the sources, the BJP is likely to follow its template of recent assembly polls and announce a large number of seats in the first list where it needs to improve its prospects.

The BJP’s candidate lists often give a chance to new faces and this time around also eyes will be on whether it drops some well-known names or does some fresh experiment in selecting its nominees. This holds significance as two BJP MPs – Jayant Sinha and Gautam Gambhir – requested BJP president JP Nadda today to relieve them so that they can focus on their other commitments.

Hyderabad braces for sweltering summer as temperatures surge to near 40°C

Hyderabad: As March starts to unfold, the Sun unleashes its scorching wrath upon Hyderabad, nudging temperatures towards 40 degrees Celsius. With the onset of what promises to be a grueling summer, denizens of the city are already donning their sun shields, masking up against the blazing heat, and seeking refuge in summer drinks and fruits available at roadside stalls.

On Saturday, Begumpet witnessed the city’s highest temperature, with the mercury rising to a sweltering 38.6 degrees Celsius. Saroornagar wasn’t far behind, clocking in at 38.3 degrees Celsius. Other areas such as Karwan, Kapra, Goshamahal, Jubilee Hills, Yousufguda, Serilingampally, Moosapet, and Quthbullahpur experienced temperatures surpassing 37 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast for Telangana, including Hyderabad, predicting above-normal temperatures throughout the summer months from March to May. The IMD’s Outlook for Seasonal Temperatures During the Hot Weather Season warns of increasingly uncomfortable days and nights ahead, with temperatures expected to soar beyond the usual averages.

The weather conditions are all set to intensify as early as March, with the month projected to maintain above-normal temperatures across the state. March alone is expected to witness most districts in Telangana experiencing heatwave conditions for three to four consecutive days. As the season progresses, the IMD anticipates a surge in the frequency of heatwaves, with over 10 to 15 days forecasted to surpass the heatwave threshold by May.

In addition to the relentless heat, sporadic rainfall is also on the horizon for March, according to the IMD. Over the next five days, Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana can expect a gradual increase in maximum temperatures.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, the state faces high vulnerability to heatwaves, with 582 out of 585 mandals in the state identified as vulnerable.

Historical data indicates that from 1986 to 1993, heatwaves in the State were primarily moderate, lasting 7 to 13 days. From 1994 onwards, the frequency and duration of severe heat waves have increased significantly. In 1997 and 1998, heatwave spells lasted up to 19 days, indicating a growing trend towards more severe heatwaves in the region.

Preliminary results from the Iranian parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections show that the turnout has surpassed 40 percent.

Citing unofficial statistics, Iranian media reported on Saturday that the rate of participation in the nationwide vote for the 12th term of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) and the 6th term of the Assembly of Experts was over 40%, with the results of the vote counting in a number of constituencies yet to be released.

The polls opened at 8 a.m. local time (0430) on Friday and the voting began at 59,000 polling stations across the country, with more than 15,000 candidates competing for 290 seats in the Iranian parliament, and 144 candidates vying for positions at the eight-year-term Assembly of Experts, an 88-member body in charge of overseeing the activities of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution with a position of authority to either appoint or dismiss the Leader.

Voting for the two elections ended at midnight local time after 16 straight hours.

A total of 61.17 million people, comprising 30.94 million men and 30.22 million women, were eligible to vote in the two elections, with the Iranian Interior Ministry saying more than 25 million cast their ballots at the polls.

The voting was initially scheduled to end at 18:00 local time but was extended three times, with each extension lasting for two hours.

President Raeisi hails high election turnout

In a message on Saturday, President Ebrahim Raeisi expressed his gratitude to the Iranian people for their remarkable turnout.

Raeisi said the enthusiastic and conscious presence of Iranians in Friday’s vote was a “big no” to the global arrogance after its historic defeat in last year’s riots, which broke out following the death of a 22-year-old woman in the capital Tehran.

“The ill-wishers of our beloved Iran had mobilized all their power so that the March 1 elections would be held without fervor,” he said.

Raeisi also underlined that the remarkable turnout brought “honor and pride to the Islamic homeland and despair and frustration on the enemies.”

After Gautam Gambhir, Another BJP MP Tells Party Won't Contest Polls

New Delhi:

BJP MP Jayant Sinha has asked the party to relieve him of electoral duties, signalling that he does not want an active role or a ticket for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Mr Sinha’s announcement came just hours after another party leader, Gautam Gambhir, hinted at his exit from electoral politics.

Both the MPs have requested BJP president JP Nadda to relieve them so that they can focus on their other commitments.

In a post on X, the MP from Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh wrote, “I have requested Honourable Party President JP Nadda to relieve me of my direct electoral duties so that I can focus my efforts on combating global climate change in Bharat and around the world. Of course, I will continue to work with the party on economic and governance issues.”

The announcements come amid reports that the two leaders may not get a ticket for the upcoming 2024 polls. The BJP is said to be contemplating giving tickets to several new leaders and some other sitting MPs also are understood to have told the party that they would like to focus on other organisational work.

The party has conducted extensive surveys to find out which leaders are popular among the masses. Sources told NDTV that both Gautam Gambhir and Jayan Sinha didn’t fare well in the surveys and were not likely to get a ticket to contest in the 2024 elections.

The BJP is expected to release a first list of candidates – over 100 names, which will include heavyweights like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah – for the 2024 Lok Sabha election soon. The party held marathon overnight meetings in Delhi, including one led by the Prime Minister at his Delhi residence that began 11 pm Thursday and finished at 4 am Friday.

Al-Quds church leaders slam Israeli attack on Gaza aid seekers

Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in al-Quds have denounced the loss of more than 100 Palestinian lives in an Israeli attack on a crowd waiting for food in Gaza City, demanding an immediate humanitarian ceasefire there and unconditional access to life-saving commodities.

“We condemn this wanton attack against innocent civilians, and call for the warring parties to reach an immediate and lengthy ceasefire that allows for the speedy disbursement of relief supplies throughout the Gaza Strip, and for the enactment of a negotiated release of those held as captives and [prisoners],” they said in a statement released on Friday.

The church leaders also voiced solid support for the Christian communities in Gaza, which include more than 800 people and have now taken refuge in the Church of Saint Porphyrius and the Holy Family Church in Gaza City.

“We likewise extend these same expressions of solidarity to the intrepid staff and volunteers of the Anglican-run Ahli Hospital, and to the patients they serve,” the statement also read.

They finally demanded an end to Israeli hostilities in Gaza, the release of captives, and serious diplomatic discussion that would ultimately lead to a just and lasting peace in the Gaza Strip and across the occupied West Bank.

Hundreds of starving Palestinians had gathered to collect food aid when the Israeli military opened fire on them, in an attack that has been described as a massacre of civilians.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 112 Palestinians were killed and 760 more injured in the assault.

Israel waged its brutal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

At least 30,228 Palestinians have since been killed in Gaza, and 71,377 others injured amid mass destruction and shortages of necessities.

BJP finalises candidates for six LS seats in Telangana

Hyderabad: The BJP leadership has reportedly finalised the names of candidates for six seats in Telangana for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The party is likely to announce the names of candidates for at least 10 seats in Telangana before the issuance of the election schedule.

According to sources, the BJP’s Central Election Committee (CEC), which met on February 29 under the chairmanship of national president JP Nadda and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, has reportedly cleared the names of candidates for six seats, including three sitting seats. Sources say union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy, party national general secretary Bandi Sanjay and Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind have been renominated from their respective constituencies-Secunderabad, Karimnagar and Nizamabad.

The CEC is learned to have also cleared the names of former MPs Boora Narsaiah Goud (Bhongir) and Konda Vishweshwar Reddy (Chevela) and BRS MP P Ramulu’s son Pothuganti Bharath from Nagarkurnool. The father son duo recently joined the BJP.

The party high command has kept the Adilabad seat, represented by party MP Soyam Bapu Rao, in pending as local leaders are opposing his candidature. Sources say a majority of the local leaders, including newly elected MLAs, are opposing the candidature of Bapu Rao and have already informed the party high command about their decision. Following this, the party is looking for a suitable candidate who could win the seat easily.

The BJP leadership has also reportedly decided to field BRS MP BB Patil, who resigned from BRS on Friday, from Zaheerabad. Patil is likely to join the BJP during Prime Minister Modi’s visit on Monday and Tuesday.

Party sources said the BJP high command would soon take a decision on Malkajgiri, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Nalgonda and a few other seats where more candidates are in the fray for tickets. It is learnt that the BJP leadership was in favour of fielding former MLA Etala Rajender from Malkajgiri seat. In Khammam, Nalgonda, Mahabubabad seats, the BJP is looking for strong candidates from other parties.

The BJP won four MP seats in the last elections and with the party managing to win 8 seats in the recently concluded Assembly elections and receiving 14 percent of votes, it is expecting to win at least 8-10 Lok Sabha seats by taking the voting percentage to 30.
