Lok Sabha Polls 2024: BJP leaders stage protest against Zaheerabad seat for Patil

Patil resigned from BRS on Friday and joined the BJP on Friday and according to sources, was likely to be given the ticket from Zaheerabad

Hyderabad: Discontent is brewing in BJP State unit over the joining of MPs from BRS, with a large number of ticket aspirants and local leaders strongly opposing the party leadership’s decision to field them in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

A large number of BJP leaders and functionaries from Zaheerabad Lok Sabha constituency staged a protest at the party State headquarters on Saturday demanding the party high command not to give the ticket to former BRS MP BB Patil from Zaheerabad. Patil resigned from BRS on Friday and joined the BJP on Friday and according to sources, was likely to be given the ticket from the same constituency.

The protestors displayed placards and raised slogans against the Zaheerabad ticket being given to Patil. The agitators raised slogans in front of BJP State President G Kishan Reddy and asked him not to give the ticket to Patil. They wanted the party to instead consider former District Cooperative Credit Bank chairmen M Jaipal Reddy, who has been working hard to strengthen the party in the Zaheerabad constituency.

Kishan Reddy said no one had been promised the ticket so far and that decision about allotting ticket for Zaheerabad seat would be taken by the Central Election Committee. BJP senior leaders tried to pacify the agitators, but they continued their protest and left the office after getting some assurance from the leaders.

Even Nagarkurnool local BJP leaders are reportedly not happy with the party high command’s decision to allocate tickets to BRS MP P Ramulu’s son P Bharath. Father and son had resigned from BRS and joined BJP recently. There were reports that former BJP president the late Bangaru Laxman’s daughter Bangaru Shruthi might be fielded from Nagarkurnool.

Classical dancer from India shot dead in US; Indian mission condemns ‘reprehensible gun attack’

New York: In yet another deadly attack on Indians and Indian-Americans in the US in recent months, a 34-year-old trained classical dancer from India and a student of Washington University, was shot dead in St Louis, Missouri. Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dancer Amarnath Ghosh, who migrated to the US from Kolkata last year “to follow his dancing dreams,” was shot several times near the border of St Louis’ Academy and Central West End neighbourhoods.

He died on the spot. According to the St Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the shooting happened at 7:15 pm on Tuesday at Delmar Boulevard and Clarendon Avenue, news portal ‘5 On Your Side’ reported on Friday.

Ghosh was pursuing his master’s in the Performing Arts Department of Washington University. Calling him a “very friendly and very talented,” Ghosh’s friends Hima Kuppa and Ravi Kuppa said, “He was always travelling a lot for his performances.

A lot of organisations called him for performances, but he always wanted to come back to St Louis.” Ghosh was learning ballet and dance. “I think it was a full scholarship at Wash U.

His ultimate dream was to get his PhD in dance and work full-time with us at our Kuchipudi Art Academy,” Hima was quoted as saying by ‘5 On Your Side.’

He enjoyed volunteering as a dance instructor at a local studio and also taught children between the ages 5 and 18. His friends told the news outlet that Ghosh was the only child of his parents; his mother died three years ago and his father died when he was a child. Gosh’s killing has prompted India’s consulate in Chicago to take up the issue with local police and the university.

Asserting that the mission is “extending all help to the relatives of deceased Amarnath Ghosh,” India’s Consulate in Chicago posted on X that it has “taken up the case strongly with St Louis police and the University for investigation of the reprehensible gun attack.”

Offering deep condolences to family and friends of the deceased in St Louis, Missouri, it said, “We are following up forensic, investigation with police and providing support.” Washington University, where Gosh was a student, has condemned his killing as “senseless violence beyond comprehension.”

“There are no words to express the pain and anguish Amarnath’s family and friends are experiencing. His death is a terrible shock to us all. This type of senseless violence is beyond comprehension and we are devastated by this loss. To have this happen in our own St. Louis community is especially heartbreaking,” Anna “Dr G” Gonzalez, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs said in a statement released to all Washington University students, faculty and staff.

It was actor Devoleena Bhattacharjee, who first alerted the authorities on social media about Ghosh’s death. Taking to X, she posted, “The reason, accused details everything are not revealed yet or perhaps no one left in his family to fight for it except his few friends.

He was from Kolkata. Excellent dancer, was pursuing PhD, was taking an evening walk and suddenly he was shot multiple times by an unknown.” She tagged the X handles of the Indian Embassy in the US, Prime Minister Narendra Modi among others and said, “Some friends in US are trying to claim the body but still no update about it” and requested the Embassy to look into it. “At least we should know the reason of his murder,” she said in the post on March 1.

Since the beginning of 2024, there have been at least half a dozen deaths of Indian and Indian-origin students in the US. The alarming rise in the number of attacks has caused concern among the community.

Sameer Kamath, a 23-year-old Indian-American student at Purdue University, was found dead in a nature preserve in Indiana on February 5. On February 2, Vivek Taneja, a 41-year-old Indian-origin IT executive, suffered life-threatening injuries during an assault outside a restaurant in Washington, making it the seventh death of an Indian or Indian-American in recent months in the US.

A week before that, Syed Mazahir Ali, an Indian student was attacked by robbers in Chicago. Earlier, 25-year-old Indian student Vivek Saini was fatally attacked in Georgia State’s Lithonia city by a homeless drug addict.

In January, 19-year-old Shreyas Reddy Beniger, a student at the Lindner School of Business in Ohio State was found dead. However, local authorities had ruled out foul play.

Another Indian student, identified as Neel Acharya at Purdue University, Indiana, was confirmed dead days after being reported missing on January 28. Akul B Dhawan, an 18-year-old at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, was found dead last month with signs of hypothermia.

The series of attacks on Indians and Indian origin person/students had prompted the officials of the Indian Embassy in Washington and its consulates at various places to hold a virtual interaction with Indian students from across the US, discussing various aspects of student well-being and ways to stay connected with the larger diaspora.

About 150 Indian Student Association office bearers and students from 90 US universities participated in the interaction led by Charge d’Affaires, Ambassador Sripriya Ranganathan. It was also attended by the Consul Generals of India in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Seattle.

Gaza journalist went to get food for starving family, returned to see them killed

By Humaira Ahad

On February 28, young Palestinian journalist Motasem Dalloul took a short break from his reporting to fetch food for his pregnant wife and little children, who were starving.

When Dalloul came back, he saw them lying under the rubble. They were killed in an Israeli bombing of a residential compound in Yafa Street, Gaza City.

“To Allah we belong and to Him we return My pregnant wife, Rahim, and my 3-year-old son, Abu Baker, have been Killed along with 20 other people in the Israeli bombing of a residential compound in Yafa Street, in the city of Gaza,” he posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The graphic picture of the lifeless bodies of the duo was attached to the post, which drew anger and outrage from netizens over the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.

Journalists in the besieged coastal strip have borne the brunt of the Israeli genocidal war since October 7, with more than 130 scribes killed by the occupying regime so far.

However, more tragically, Gaza-based journalists have also lost their families and houses in what human rights activists believe are deliberate attacks to muzzle their voices.

The death toll in Gaza has already surpassed the mark of 30,000, most of them children and women. Earlier this week, more than 100 people were killed after regime forces and tanks opened fire on a large crowd of people who were queuing up to collect aid.

This starvation that Palestinians in Gaza are facing separated Dalloul from his family.

Dalloul went out to search for some food for his hungry wife and kids. He came back to see the house where the family had sought refuge bombed by the apartheid regime.

“At night, she told me she was hungry. I said: I had nothing to do except risking my life to get some aid. She begged me not to go, but I insisted. I LOVED her too much. I LOVED her more than my soul,” he wrote in a post on X, overwhelmed by emotions.

“I went there and succeeded in getting flour and I was happy that she would eat with my little kids. Before I reached them, I was told they were bombed and wounded. I left the flour and rushed to the hospital, found my 6-year-old sim, Asem, wounded and her and my little angel Abu Baker martyred. I got very crazy.”

Dalloul’s three-year-old son Asem survived the attack and is now recovering from injuries.

In another post, the Palestinian journalist shared a picture of his house, razed to the ground, where his pregnant wife and child were killed.

“Here, from under this rubble, my beloved wife and little angel ascended to Heaven. My heart is completely broken,” he wrote.

UN special rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, has repeatedly stressed that denial of food is a war crime and constitutes a “situation of genocide.”

Israel has been intentionally starving Palestinians and should be held accountable for war crimes and genocide, according to the UN’s leading expert on the right to food.

“Intentionally depriving people of food is clearly a war crime. Israel has announced its intention to destroy the Palestinian people, in whole or in part, simply for being Palestinian. This is now a situation of genocide. This means…Israel in its entirety is culpable and should be held accountable – not just individuals or this government or that person,” Fakhri said.

A day before Dalloul’s family got killed; the journalist described their plight amid the worsening food situation in the besieged strip due to the crippling siege.

“We are hungry. I got sick after walking more than 20 kilometers every day since the beginning of the week and got nothing.”

“Last night was the worst since the start of the genocide as I was separated from my son. Two of my sons went to try collecting some aid today. I pray for their safety and wish they get something to eat,” he hastened to add, not knowing that the pain of separation would become permanent.

After spending hours in search of food, Dalloul’s sons returned empty-handed,

“Unfortunately, my sons could not get any humanitarian aid! I will go myself and do my best. Pray for me,” he wrote in a separate post.

As per a consensus among hunger experts across the globe, a huge civilian population like that of Palestinians in Gaza has never been starved in such a brief period.

“Israel is not just targeting civilians, it is trying to damn the future of the Palestinian people by harming their children,” Fakhri was quoted as saying.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday said 10 children have died of starvation in the besieged strip, pointing to the gravity of the humanitarian catastrophe.

“The official records, yesterday or this morning, said that there was a 10th child officially registered in a hospital as having starved to death,” WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said.

As per the statistics provided by Project Hope, a health and humanitarian NGO, 21 percent of the pregnant women and 11 percent of the children in Gaza under the age of 5 that were treated by the organization in the last three weeks suffer from malnutrition.

As per a UN report released on February 19, one in six children under the age of 2 is acutely malnourished in the northern part of the coastal strip, “putting young children at highest risk of medical complications and death unless they receive urgent treatment.”

“The Gaza Strip is poised to witness an explosion in preventable child deaths which would compound the already unbearable level of child deaths in Gaza,” said UNICEF Deputy Executive Director for Humanitarian Action and Supply Operations (ASG), Ted Chaiban

“If the conflict doesn’t end now, children’s nutrition will continue to plummet, leading to preventable deaths or health issues which will affect the children of Gaza for the rest of their lives and have potential intergenerational consequences,” Chiban added.

The Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court regards intentionally starving a particular civilian population by denying them food, water and shelter as a war crime.

The Geneva Conventions also recognize starvation as a war crime. In 2018, the UN Security Council placed deliberate deprivation of food on the list of war crimes.

Experts say that Israel’s claim of exceptions in war crimes holds no ground. The regime is purposefully destroying the food system, holding humanitarian aid, to let hunger and diseases spread in Gaza.

Meanwhile, a day after losing his wife and son, Dalloul returned to his professional duty.

“Motasem Dalloul continues to cover the ongoing genocide despite losses in his immediate family. If there is any journalist you should be following in Gaza, it’s him,” wrote Wad Kosti.

The Gazan journalist asked the world to pray for his children recuperating from injuries and shock of losing their mother and sibling.

“Pray for my son, Asem, who was left without mother, due to Israeli bombing, along with three little daughters: Habiba, 7, Hafsa, 5 and Halima, 2.”

New Delhi: A few days ago, Shreyas Iyer along with Ishan Kishan had been omitted from the 2023/24 BCCI Central Contracts List, with the board saying that the duo were not recommended to be amongst the 30 players to get the annual retainership.

Regarding Iyer, who pulled out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Baroda due to a back issue, a report in Revsportz says BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar was furious when he came to know about the right-handed batter being present at the Academy of his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, who he captains in the tournament.

As the chief selector, Agarkar is in charge of finalising the central contracts and Iyer was dropped from the central contracts list.

Currently, Iyer is playing for Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy semifinal against Tamil Nadu at the BKC Ground in Mumbai.

Iyer was one of the key performers in India’s runners-up finish in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup last year, making 530 runs in 11 matches, including a century in the semifinal against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium.

He had been in a race against time to be fit for the tournament due to a back injury needing surgery but got fit enough to play in the mega event.

But Iyer hadn’t left a mark in the first two Tests against England, making scores of 35 and 13 in Hyderabad, followed by 27 and 29 in Visakhapatnam.

He was then left out of India’s squad for the last three Tests against England. In his last seven Test matches, Iyer has amassed only 187 runs at an average of 17, with a top score of just 35.

An Honourable Exit? Why Two BJP MPs Said They Don't Want To Contest Again

An Honourable Exit? Why Two BJP MPs Said They Don't Want To Contest Again

The BJP is following a lengthy process to decide on the candidate for each constituency.

New Delhi:

In Indian politics, where there is intense competition for tickets from any party that has a chance of winning, sitting MPs declaring that they do not want to contest again is rare. So, when two BJP MPs said – within hours of each other – today that they would like to be “relieved” of their political duties, it took many by surprise.

Sources have told NDTV, however, that the well-oiled election machinery of the BJP, which has conducted extensive surveys and held long deliberations on every Lok Sabha seat, had already decided not to repeat Gautam Gambhir and Jayant Sinha.

In a post on X around 10 am today, Gautam Gambhir, the BJP MP from East Delhi, said, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President @JPNadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments.”

Less than five hours later, Jayant Sinha, who represents Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh in the Lok Sabha, made a nearly identical post. “I have requested Hon’ble Party President Shri @JPNadda
ji to relieve me of my direct electoral duties so that I can focus my efforts on combating global climate change in Bharat and around the world,” he posted on X.

Both leaders also thanked the party’s leadership, including PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, for the opportunities provided to them.

Gautam Gambhir is a first-time MP, while Jayant Sinha, son of former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha had been elected from Hazaribagh twice in a row. Sources indicated that both MPs were not very popular in their constituencies and the BJP, which has set itself a target of winning a mammoth 370 seats, had decided not to repeat them.

“In Delhi, where the party had won all seven Lok Sabha seats in 2019, the party is looking for new faces,” said a source.

The decision followed a lengthy, detailed process, which included getting feedback from the people in every constituency, conducting internal evaluations, and hiring survey agencies to file comprehensive reports. These were followed by deliberations by the state leadership and the national brass.

Sources said the national leadership had made it clear that the MPs whose performance was not up to the mark would not be repeated and that at least 60 incumbent MPs could face this fate.

On Thursday night, a five-hour meeting had been held in New Delhi, which was chaired by Prime Minister Modi and attended by Mr Shah and Mr Nadda, among others. The meeting, which began at 11 pm and ended at 4 am, had also focused on constituencies that the party hadn’t done well in. The idea was to announce the names of the candidates even before the poll dates are out, so that they get enough time to reach out to the voters in their respective candidates.

The first list of the candidates is expected to be released later today.

Palestinian death toll in Gaza rises to 30,320: ministry

During the past 24 hours, the Israeli army killed 92 Palestinians and wounded 156 others, bringing the total death toll to 30,320 and injuries to 71,533 since the Israel war on Gaza broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, according to the statement.

Among them, 15 died in Al-Aqsa Hospital in the city of Deir al-Balah due to an Israeli airstrike targeting two houses, and two others were killed in an airstrike targeting a house in Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip.

Ten people were killed in Israeli air raids on neighborhoods of Al-Zaytoun, Tal Al-Hawa, Al-Sabra and Al-Daraj in Gaza City, added the sources.

Meanwhile, in the northern Gazan town of Beit Hanoun, a group of people picking herbs to satisfy hunger were targetted in an Israeli artillery shelling, with three of them killed and seven others injured, according to eyewitnesses.

In Rafah, in the far south, an Israeli drone bombed a civilian vehicle in the Al-Shaboura neighborhood in the center of the city, killing two people and wounding a third. They were transferred to the Kuwaiti Hospital.

New Delhi: The total coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial coal mines in the country during the period from April 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024, went up to 126.80 million tonnes and 128.88 million tonnes, marking an increase of 27.06 per cent and 29.14 per cent respectively, as compared to the same period of the previous year, according to figures released by the Coal Ministry on Saturday.

The growth in coal production reflects the heightened efficiency and a strong logistics network that is helping to ensure India’s energy security and reducing the nation’s reliance on imported coal.

These efforts are in line with the government’s initiative to promote self-reliance and support the ‘Make in India’ campaign, the ministry said.

The increase in production comes on the back of the successful implementation of policy reforms by the government which include measures such as the transparent e-auction of commercial mines.

As of February 29, the total number of producing mines stood at 54, with 35 allocated to the power sector, 11 allocated to the non-regulated sector, and eight for the sale of coal in the open market.

As many as 91 mines have been successfully auctioned under commercial coal auctions, out of which seven mines have already commenced coal production.

The total coal production and dispatch in the month of February 2024 was 14.85 million tonnes (MT) and 12.95 MT, with an increase of 37 per cent and 33 per cent respectively, as compared to 10.85 MT and 9.72 MT respectively in the same month of FY 2022-23.

The average daily coal production and dispatch rate was 5.12 lakh tonnes and 4.46 lakh tonnes per day respectively, showing a consistent performance.

The Coal Ministry said that the focus is on sustaining this growth trajectory and efforts are being made to further streamline operations and bolster the infrastructure to meet the rising energy demands of the nation.
