World Court orders Israel to let humanitarian aid to Gaza 'without delay'

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has announced new measures, ordering Israel to “ensure, without delay” that humanitarian aid is provided to the Gaza Strip to halt famine.

The ICJ, also called the World Court, said on Thursday that Israel must take “all necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay, in full cooperation with the United Nations, the unhindered provision at scale by all concerned of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance.”

That comes as the court noted that since 26 January “the catastrophic living conditions of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have deteriorated further, in particular in view of the prolonged and widespread deprivation of food and other basic necessities to which the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have been subjected.”

In the letter, the court said Gazans are no longer facing only a risk of famine, “but that famine is setting in.”

The court unanimously mandated Israel to increase the number of land crossings into Gaza and keep them open for “as long as necessary.”

Israel unleashed its war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas resistance group carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the usurping entity in retaliation for its intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

The Tel Aviv regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed more than 32,500 Palestinians and injured nearly 75,000 others.

"Tax Terrorism Has To Stop": Congress On Fresh Rs 1,700 Crore Notice

New Delhi:

The Congress has received a Rs 1,700 crore notice from the Income Tax Department, a day after the Delhi High Court dismissed the party’s petition challenging the tax notices.

The fresh notice is for assessment years 2017-18 to 2020-21 and includes penalty and interest.

The Congress is already facing a funds crunch after Income Tax authorities imposed a penalty of Rs 200 crore and froze its funds. The party has not received any relief from the High Court in the case and is likely to move the Supreme Court.

The party has accused the BJP of squeezing it financially and of using tax authorities against it ahead of Lok Sabha elections beginning April 19.

“The notices are being sent to cripple us financially. This is tax terrorism, and this is being used to attack the Congress, This has to stop,” Congress’s Jairam Ramesh said in a press conference today.

He asserted that the Congress’s campaign for the upcoming parliamentary polls will continue and the party will take its guarantees to the people of the country.

“We will not be scared of these notices. We will be more aggressive and fight these polls,” the former Union minister said.

In February, the I-T department had found fault in the party’s tax returns and demanded Rs 200 crore. The Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) had asked the party to pay the dues and froze their accounts.

The Congress said the tax tribunal’s order freezing its funds was “an attack on democracy” as the order came just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court rejected petitions by the Congress challenging the initiation of tax reassessment proceedings against it for a period of four years.

Funding for political parties is becoming a central issue in this election, particularly after the Supreme Court struck down electoral bonds – which allow individuals and/or businesses to make anonymous donations to political parties – on grounds it violated citizens’ right to information.

The Congress and other opposition parties welcomed the verdict, which scrapped a scheme that had benefitted the BJP the most.

Taliban To Resume Stoning Women In Public For Adultery: Report

Taliban To Resume Stoning Women In Public For Adultery: Report

Afghanistan’s women have faced numerous challenges since the Taliban returned to power

New Delhi:

The Taliban has announced that the women in Afghanistan will be stoned to death for adultery, a report has said.

Taliban’s Supreme Leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada made the announcement – that it is resuming publicly stoning women to death – in a voice message broadcast on state TV last Saturday, reported the Telegraph.

In a video that has been accessed by the Telegraph, Akhundzada said that the women’s rights that the international community had been advocating for were against the Taliban’s interpretation of Islamic Sharia.

“You say it’s a violation of women’s rights when we stone them to death. But we will soon implement the punishment for adultery. We will flog women in public. We will stone them to death in public,” he said.

“The Taliban’s work did not end with the takeover of Kabul, it has only just begun,” Akhundzada added.

Afghanistan’s women have faced numerous challenges since the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Girls and women in the war-torn country have no access to education, employment and public spaces.

Only one month after returning to power, the Taliban authorities banned girls from attending secondary school, before closing university doors to them in December 2022 and then heavily restricting their participation in the workforce.

Conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan are the “worst globally,” a UN report said, saying that the Taliban government’s policies — which are based on their strict interpretation of Islam — could amount to a “gender apartheid.”

For many families, the only path forward for their daughters is marriage, “regardless of their consent,” the AFP said quoting a young student.

“Depression is widespread. The rate of suicide for girls has gone up a lot in the last two years. It is tragic,” she told the news agency.

Macron has made US angry with remarks on NATO troops in Ukraine: Report

Washington is discontented with President Emmanuel Macron of France after his suggestion that preventing a Russian victory in Ukraine could require a NATO military force, a Western media report says.

The report released by Bloomberg on Wednesday said the French leader’s justification for his statement had been criticized by allies behind closed doors.

The report, quoting a senior US official, said some in Washington believe Macron might trigger a clash with Moscow.

The French leader’s move may not have been smart from the standpoint of operational security since some Western nations do already have a small number of troops in Ukraine, the report said.

But senior officials in Moscow maintain the Western presence is an open secret.

Moscow considers the conflict part of a US-led proxy war with Russia.

After hosting a pro-Kiev gathering in Paris in late February, Macron said NATO members “cannot exclude anything,” including having boots on the ground in Ukraine.

Macron’s remarks have forced NATO members to confirm their red lines on Ukraine.

Numerous Western leaders publicly ruled out sending troops after his comments. US President Joe Biden was among those to do so.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was another. He has explained his refusal to send long-range missiles to Ukraine by saying that unlike Britain and France, Germany is not ready to send its personnel to help fire the weapons.

Russia launched the “special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, over the perceived threat of the ex-Soviet republic joining NATO.

Since then, the United States and Ukraine’s other allies have sent Kiev tens of billions of dollars’ worth of weapons, including rocket systems, drones, armored vehicles, tanks, and communication systems.

Western countries have also imposed a slew of economic sanctions on Moscow. The Kremlin has said the sanctions and the Western military assistance will only prolong the war.

Did Hardik Push Malinga Away? Video Sends Social Media Into A Frenzy

Is all well in the Mumbai Indians camp? Hardik Pandya‘s appointment as the captain of the franchise, in place of Rohit Sharma, wasn’t reportedly received in the best possible manner by everyone. After Mumbai incurred two consecutive losses in their first two matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign, the situation seems to have worsened. A video has emerged on social media, making fans wonder if the relationship between Hardik and Malinga has turned sour. In the video, the MI captain could be seen pushing the legendary Sri Lankan away.

Malinga, who is a legend at Mumbai Indians, currently working as a coach, came to hug Hardik after the conclusion of the match but the skipper didn’t seem to be in the mood and pushed aside the Lankan after a brief handshake. Here’s the video:

Hardik Pandya was upbeat despite Mumbai losing their second successive match of the season, against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“Toughest soldiers get the toughest test; we are the toughest team in the competition, anyone who could have come close to where we reached as a batting group or just overall are us – let’s make sure we will help each other; worst or good, we will be together,” Hardik said.

Recapping the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad was put to bat first by Mumbai Indians. Fiery knocks came from Travis Head (62 in 24 balls, with nine fours and three sixes), and Abhishek Sharma (63 in 23 balls with three fours and seven sixes) that powered SRH to 148/2 in their 10 overs.

A brief 48-run stand between Abhishek and Aiden Markram (42* in 28 balls, with two fours and a six), Heinrich Klaasen (80* in 34 balls, with four boundaries and seven sixes) formed a 116-run stand in 54 balls to take SRH to 277/3 in their 20 overs, the highest-ever IPL total.

MI had been controlled well by SRH bowlers and restricted to a commendable 246/5 in 20 overs, losing by 31 runs.

Israel must 'ensure urgent humanitarian assistance' in Gaza

The International Court of Justice’s latest order comes as heavy street battles continued to rage in besieged Gaza — and a major medical charity said it “hasn’t seen any change” since a United Nations Security Council resolution this week demanding an immediate ceasefire.

“Israel shall… take all necessary and effective measures to ensure, without delay… the unhindered provision… of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance” in Gaza, the ICJ said, France 24 reported.

This included food, water, electricity, fuel, shelter, clothing, hygiene and sanitation requirements, as well as medical supplies and medical care to Palestinians throughout Gaza, its judges said.

“Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine, but… famine is setting in,” the Hague-based court said.

Israel’s attack has killed at least 32,552 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry of Gaza.

In a ruling in mid-January that made headlines worldwide, the ICJ ordered Israel to do everything it could to prevent genocide during its Gaza offensive.

The court also ruled that Israel must allow aid into Gaza to ease the desperate humanitarian situation there.
