Jagadish Reddy holds Congress govt responsible for agricultural crisis in Telangana

Suryapet: Former minister and Suryapet MLA Guntakandla Jagadish Reddy on Thursday held negligence of the Congress government for present crisis in agriculture sector in the state. Along with Thungathurthi former MLA and BRS leader Gadari Kishore, Jagadish Reddy was inspected the dried up paddy crops at Velugupally and Singaram in Thungathurthi mand al in the district.

Speaking to the media on the occasion, Jagadish Reddy said that green agricultural fields and green pastures appeared everywhere in Telangana state and Konaseema like atmosphere prevailed in ayacut of SRSP canal in Suryapet district during earlier BRS government. The scene got completely changed within two months after the Congress came to power in 2023 legislative assembly elections in the state.

He alleged that negligence of the Congress government towards agriculture sector had resulted in the present situation. The ayacut of SRSP canal turned like desert due to the policies of the state government. He accused the state government of intentionally turning Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS) into an idle project with a fear that credit would go to the former Chief Minister and BRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao, who was the mastermind behind the largest lift irrigation scheme in the country.

He alleged that the ministers and Congress legislators lacked concern to visit dried up paddy crops in the state. He dared the ministers to visit the dried up crops and interact with the farmers that would expose what is the reason for the current agricultural crisis in the state. More than the adverse weather condition, the lack of knowledge of the rulers on agriculture sector was main reason for the agricultural crisis in the state, he added.

Why Did Baltimore Bridge In US Collapse And How Much Will It Cost To Fix?

Why Did Baltimore Bridge In US Collapse And How Much Will It Cost To Fix?

US Baltimore Bridge Collapse occured on Tuesday.

Divers recovered the remains of two of the six missing workers more than a day after a cargo ship smashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge. The bodies of two men were found in a red pickup truck submerged in the icy waters of the Patapsco River. Rescuers pulled two workers from the water alive on Tuesday, and one was hospitalized.

Six workers on the bridge are presumed dead. The two men whose bodies were recovered on Wednesday were identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, 35, of Baltimore, originally from Mexico, and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, 26, of nearby Dundalk, originally from Guatemala.

The workers came from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, according to a press conference.

Authorities have suspended efforts to recover bodies in the 50-foot-deep (15 m) waters surrounding the twisted ruins due to treacherous conditions.

At the time of the crash, a construction crew was fixing potholes on the bridge and eight people fell 185 feet (56 m) into the river where water temperatures were 47 degrees Fahrenheit (8 degrees Celsius). Two workers were rescued, one unharmed and one injured.

Authorities saved lives by stopping vehicles from using the bridge after the ship sent out a mayday call.

The ship also dropped its anchors to slow down, buying time to clear the bridge.

When did the Baltimore bridge collapse?

Shortly after 1 a.m. EDT (0500 GMT) on Tuesday, a container ship named the Dali was sailing down the Patapsco River on its way to Sri Lanka. At 1:24 a.m., it suffered a total power failure and all its lights went out.

Three minutes later, at 1:27 a.m., the container ship struck a pylon of the bridge, crumpling almost the entire structure into the water.

Less than a minute before impact, a first responder on emergency radio responded to the crew’s mayday call by sending officers to halt traffic onto the bridge.

Without their fast work, the scale of the disaster may have been far greater, even during the early morning hours when vehicular traffic is relatively light.

Tuesday’s disaster may be the worst U.S. bridge collapse since 2007, when a design error caused the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis to plunge into the Mississippi River, killing 13 people.

Why did the bridge collapse?

Bridges such as the one in Baltimore are classified as “fracture critical” by the federal government – meaning that if one portion of the bridge collapses, the rest of the structure falls. There are more than 16,800 such spans in the U.S., according to the Federal Highway Administration.

The head of the National Transportation Safety Board said the bridge lacked structural engineering redundancies common to newer spans, making it more vulnerable to catastrophic collapse.

The Key Bridge opened in 1977 – three years before a similar vessel collision of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Florida, killed 35 people, and prompted bridge designers to implement better protections for foundation piers.

Who will pay for the damage and how much will it cost?

President Joe Biden promised to visit Baltimore soon and said he wanted the federal government to pay to rebuild the bridge.

The Transportation Department on Thursday awarded $60 million in “quick release” emergency relief funds to aid in clearing debris and begin the process of rebuilding. To replace the bridge, Congress would need to approve funding. After the bridge collapse in 2007 in Minnesota, Congress allocated $250 million.

Initial estimates put the cost of rebuilding the bridge at $600 million, according to economic analysis company IMPLAN.

Federal officials have told Maryland lawmakers the final cost of rebuilding the bridge could soar to at least $2 billion, Roll Call reported, citing a source familiar with the discussions.

Insurers could face billions of dollars in claims, analysts said, with one putting the cost at as much as $4 billion, which would make the tragedy a record shipping insurance loss.

How long will it take to rebuild?

Rebuilding could be a lengthy process and will depend on whether any of the remaining structure can be salvaged. It took five years to construct the original bridge from 1972-1977.

The closure of the port for just one month would cost Maryland $28 million in lost business, according to IMPLAN.

What ship hit the Baltimore Bridge?

The Dali was leaving Baltimore en route to Colombo, Sri Lanka, with 21 crew and two pilots on board.

The ship measures 948 feet (289 m) – as long as three football fields. It was stacked high with containers but was capable of carrying twice as much cargo. Safety investigators recovered the ship’s black box, which can give them the vessel’s position, speed, heading, radar, bridge audio, and radio communications as well as alarms.

The same ship was involved in an incident in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016, when it hit a quay as it tried to exit the North Sea container terminal.

A later inspection in June 2023 carried out in San Antonio, Chile, found the vessel had “propulsion and auxiliary machinery” deficiencies, according to data on the public Equasis website, which provides information on ships.

The registered owner of the Singapore-flagged ship is Grace Ocean Pte Ltd, LSEG data show. Synergy Marine Group managed the ship, and Maersk chartered the vessel.

What do we know about the bridge that collapsed?

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was one of three ways to cross the Baltimore Harbor and handled 31,000 cars per day or 11.3 million vehicles a year.

The steel structure was four lanes wide and rose 185 feet (56 m) above the river.

It opened in 1977 and crosses the Patapsco River, where U.S. national anthem author Francis Scott Key wrote the “Star Spangled Banner” in 1814 after witnessing the British defeat at the Battle of Baltimore and the British bombing of Fort McHenry.

How will the bridge collapse impact the Baltimore port?

Traffic was suspended at the port, the 17th largest in the country.

The flow of containers to Baltimore can likely be redistributed to bigger ports. However, there could be major disruptions in shipping cars, coal and sugar.

It is the busiest U.S. port for car shipments, handling at least 750,000 vehicles in 2023, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

In 2023, the port was the second busiest for coal exports.

It is also the largest U.S. port by volume for handling farm and construction machinery, as well as agricultural products such as sugar and salt.

Aged Kerala parents still wait for son who left for Australia seven years ago

Thiruvananthapuram: 70-year-old Jayaprakash and his 60-year-old wife Valsala, from Ettumanoor in Kottayam, are still waiting to hear the voice of their younger son, Jithin, after nearly seven years.

Valsala told IANS that Jithin Jayaprakash, after he did his Bachelor’s degree in Management, told them that he wishes to go to Australia. After pooling their meager resources, they gave him five lakh Rupees.

On May 23, 2016, the then 25-year-old Jithin left for Australia from Kochi, through Indonesia .

The then happy parents bid good bye to Jithin, but are now sitting in their rented home, both unemployed. People extend some relief to them and their noon meals are from the famed Ettumanoor Temple.

“The last call from him was on June 15, 2017, and we do not know from where he was calling, as we believed he was in Australia. At times he used to send money, but till date after June 15, 2017, we have no clue about where he is,” said Valsala.

After hearing the story of Valsala, kind-hearted Keralite’s based in Melbourne started to look out for Jithin in Australia.

Thiruvallam Bhasi, a senior journalist based in Melbourne approached the migration authorities in Australia. After a detailed probe, it was found that no one by the name of Jithin bearing his passport number ever landed in Australia.

“We have now written to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Union Minister of State for External Affairs to take up the case of missing Jithin,” said Bhasi.

A distraught Valsala said that a few times, they were unable to face the insinuations of people from whom they borrowed money, and even thought of committing suicide.

“But we have decided that we will fight it out and we just wish to know about our son and what happened to him. Both of us have health issues and the meager income of our elder son helps us to pay our rent,” said Valsala, still hoping that they will hear some news of Jithin.

5 Facts On Sunita Kejriwal, Delhi Chief Minister's Wife Now In Spotlight

New Delhi:

Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi liquor policy case raised the question – who will be the next Delhi Chief Minister? The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) says he continues to govern from jail. Arvind Kejriwal’s chosen messenger, however, is wife Sunita Kejriwal.

Sunita Kejriwal today made her third video announcement on behalf of the AAP chief, announcing a “Kejriwal ko aashirwad” campaign and urging people to share messages on a WhatsApp number shared by her. The latest video provoked a sharp attack from the ruling BJP, with Union Minister Hardeep Puri today saying Sunita Kejriwal “is preparing for the role of Chief Minister”.

Here are 5 facts on Sunita Kejriwal:

  • Sunita Kejriwal is a former Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer, who served in the Income Tax (I-T) department for 22 years.
  • She met Arvind Kejriwal during a training programme in Bhopal. Sunita is from a 1994 batch IRS officer, while Mr Kejriwal is a 1995-batch officer.
  • The 58-year-old opted for voluntary retirement from the I-T department in 2016. Her last posting was at the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Delhi where she served as the Income Tax Commissioner.
  • She was often seen with Arvind Kejriwal during the Indian Against Corruption movement, and during the early days of the Aam Aadmi Party. She even took a leave from office to help Mr Kejriwal contest against Narendra Modi from Varanasi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
  • After a thumping win in the 2015 Delhi assembly polls, where AAP secured 67 of the 70 seats, Arvind Kejriwal’s first tweet was dedicated to Sunita. “Thank u Sunita for always being there,” he had posted.

Will not allow betrayers to return to party fold, BRS working president KTR declares

BRS working president KT Rama Rao speaks at the Telanganan Bhavan on Friday.

Hyderabad: Amidst exit of key leaders from the party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, BRS working president KT Rama Rao urged the party cadre to remain steadfast and focused, vowing to lead the cadre in upcoming Lok Sabha elections, aiming for victory in majority seats. He urged the party members to work collectively in advancing the party’s agenda and ensuring the party’s victory in their respective constituencies.

Participating in the Chevella parliamentary party preparatory meeting at Telangana Bhavan on Friday, Rama Rao said he would not want to comment on the exit of senior leaders like K Keshava Rao, Kadiyam Srihari and others for their political gains. He said he would like to leave to their wisdom the allegations made against the party leadership. “Let the time be the ultimate arbiter of their decisions,” he said.

Calling the defection of former Minister Patnam Mahender Reddy and Chevella MP G Ranjith Reddy to the Congress akin to betrayal and backstabbing, the BRS working president urged party workers to seek retribution at the ballot box. He pledged to stop such leaders from returning to the BRS even if they fell at the feet of the party chief K Chandrashekhar Rao in future.

Rama Rao also took aim at Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, challenging his sincerity and questioning his political allegiances. He demanded that Revanth Reddy clarify whether he was aligned with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi or Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He ridiculed the Chief Minister for not accepting his challenge to contest from Malkajgiri parliamentary constituency.

“Revanth Reddy termed BRS as B-team of BJP, but he himself is turning the Congress into the B-team of BJP in Telangana. The Congress party appears to be in no position to stop the BJP at the national level. Only regional parties can stop the BJP in their respective States,” he said, asserting that vote for the Congress would only benefit the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls. He also wished Revanth Reddy to serve entire five years term and fulfill all 420 promises.

Further, Rama Rao credited Chevella candidate Kasani Gnaneshwar of being a leader of the marginalised sections and fighting for their cause, throughout his life. He said Gnaneshwar joined the party when others were deserting it and it was important to ensure his victory from Chevella with a thumping majority. Emphasising the need to strengthen the voice of Telangana, he reiterated the importance of unity within the BRS ranks, underscoring the party’s role as a champion for marginalized communities and the State’s development. He assured complete support to the party workers who dedicated themselves to the party’s growth.

BJP Must Apologise To Manmohan Singh: Sanjay Raut On Air India Probe Report

BJP Must Apologise To Manmohan Singh: Sanjay Raut On Air India Probe Report

“The BJP must apologise to Dr Singh,” Sanjay Raut said after the CBI filed its closure report.

Mumbai:

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has asked the BJP to apologise to former prime minister Manmohan Singh after the CBI filed a closure report in its Air India-Indian Airlines merger case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a closure report in its probe into the alleged irregularities in the leasing of aircraft by NACIL, a company formed by the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines during the UPA era, as there was no “evidence of any wrongdoing”, officials said Thursday.

NCP leader Praful Patel, who now belongs to the outfit headed by Ajit Pawar, was the Union civil aviation minister in the earlier Congress-led United Progress Alliance (UPA) government when the leasing was done.

Talking to reporters, Raut said the BJP had made a hue and cry over alleged corruption in the civil aviation sector during Manmohan Singh’s tenure as PM.

“The BJP must apologise to Dr Singh,” he said.

The National Aviation Corporation of India Limited (NACIL) was formed after the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines.

The CBI has alleged that the decision was made “dishonestly”, and the aircraft were leased even while an acquisition programme was going on.

The leasing decision was taken “in conspiracy with other unknown persons on extraneous considerations” that resulted in “pecuniary benefit” to private companies and consequent “loss to the government exchequer,” the CBI had alleged in its FIR.

About the reported discord among MVA partners ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Raut said there is no dispute among the allies over seat sharing.

The opposition grouping MVA comprises the Congress, Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar).

“On April 3, a press conference of MVA leaders will be held at Shivalaya, the Sena (UBT) office. Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar and Congress leaders Nana Patole, Prithviraj Chavan and Balasaheb Thorat will be present,” he said.

Sanjay Raut also said that Mr Thackeray will also attend the opposition INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on March 31, organised to “safeguard the country’s interests and democracy”.

The opposition parties announced the rally last week following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an excise policy-linked money-laundering case.

'Kejriwal's Time Limited, Madam Prepping For Post': Union Minister's Attack

New Delhi:

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today took a swipe at jailed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal as someone who has “very limited time”, alluding to the end of his chief ministership.

Mr Puri said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, is likely preparing to take the top post soon. “Kejriwal’s wife was not only a colleague in the revenue service. They have sidelined everyone. Now madam is likely preparing for the top post,” the Housing and Urban Affairs Minister told reporters in Delhi today.

“Kejriwal didn’t answer summons nine times. Then the Enforcement Directorate officers went to his house. Let it be, Kejriwal’s time is very limited,” said Mr Puri, who is also the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister.

Mr Kejriwal has been arrested over alleged money laundering in framing the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy case. His custody with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) was extended by four days yesterday.

The Union Minister also criticised the Congress for protesting over legitimate tax demand. “Everyone has to file tax returns. Their revenue has only been increasing,” he said.

The Congress received a Rs 1,700 crore notice from the Income Tax Department, a day after the Delhi High Court dismissed the party’s petition challenging the tax notices. The fresh notice is for assessment years 2017-18 to 2020-21, and includes penalty and interest.

Referring to a planned protest by the Opposition INDIA bloc on March 31, Mr Puri said, “Their time is over. Talk about them in the past tense.”

While Mr Kejriwal is in the ED custody, his wife Sunita Kejriwal today made her third video announcement on his behalf, announcing a “Kejriwal ko aashirwad” campaign. She shared a WhatsApp number and asked people to send messages for Mr Kejriwal.

Sunita Kejriwal is a former Indian Revenue Services (IRS) officer, who served in the Income Tax department for 22 years. She met Arvind Kejriwal during a training programme in Bhopal. She is from the 1994 batch, while her husband is from the 1995 batch.
