Bundesliga: Andrich And Schick Late Show Keeps Bayer Leverkusen Unbeaten

Bayern Leverkusen beat Hoffenheim in Bundesliga© AFP

Last-gasp goals from Robert Andrich and Patrik Schick kept Bayer Leverkusen’s undefeated record this season alive with a 2-1 home win over Hoffenheim on Saturday.

A first-half Maximilian Baier strike had Hoffenheim on track to break Leverkusen’s unbeaten streak, which now stands at 39 matches, just one day after in-demand manager Xabi Alonso pledged his future to the club.

But as they have done regularly this season, Leverkusen fought back late as Andrich levelled the scores in the 88th minute before an injury-time Schick volley sealed another remarkable comeback win.

The victory sends title-bound Leverkusen 13 points clear of Bayern Munich, who face Borussia Dortmund later on Saturday, with seven matches remaining this season.

They Wanted To Go To Germany, Sent To Russia Instead By Agents

One of the men alleged that he was denied food and kept thirsty while in captivity.

Karnal (Haryana):

Two men from Haryana’s Karnal were allegedly lured on the pretext of a permanent work visa in Germany and tortured by agents, police said on Saturday. They had been promised jobs in a hotel and a permanent work visa. But they were sent to Russia instead where they were allegedly tortured by the agents.

“I went abroad on September 24 last year. The agent who sent me said that they will provide me with a permanent work visa in Germany, but they handed over a Bangkok ticket. When I reached there, they started torturing me. Additionally, they took money from my family,” Mukesh, one of the men who allegedly faced torture in Russia, told ANI on Saturday.

“From Bangkok, they (agent) game me the ticket to Russia and said that their people would come to pick me up at the airport. After reaching Russia, they began torturing me. Donker took me to their place, started beating me and demanded money,” he said.

Mukesh further alleged that he was denied food and was kept thirsty while in captivity.

“By taxi, I was taken to Belarus from Russia; they took me to their place in the border forests, put burnt cigarettes on my body. Through me, they used to do video calls to my family, and threatened to kill me if my family didn’t credit money,” he said.

“We were then arrested by the Army for not having valid travel permits. They asked us to join the army or serve in jail for 10 years. We refused to join the army, then they tortured us, and put us in jail in Moscow, the youth added.

“I was sent to a camp in Moscow, where I was asked if I wanted to join the army or get deported. I chose to be deported.I returned to India on March 14,” he said.

According to the police, the family of the man have filed a complaint with the Haryana police regarding the alleged torture.

“They sent their sons abroad, but Donker blackmailed them and trapped them there. They charged Rs 10 lakh and took away Rs 25 lakh in total. An FIR has been launched and arrests will be made soon,” Sandeep Kumar, Investigating Officer (IO) of Munak Police Station in Karnal, said while speaking to reporters on Saturday.

“They are still recovering. We met them today. As soon as their condition improves, they will be brought in for further investigation,” the officer added.

Kristen Stewart, fiance Dylan Meyer freeze eggs

Los Angeles: Actress Kristen Stewart and her screenwriter fiancee Dylan Meyer, who got engaged in 2021, are looking at options for having children together in the future and for that the two have even got their “eggs frozen”.

Stewart said: “We’ve done really annoying things like freeze our eggs and stuff. So if we want to, we can.”

The couple are in no rush to tie the knot and just have a “loose” plan for their wedding.

“We’re both, like, really casual people, and so we did this sweeping, traditional thing where we were like, ‘Marry me! You marry me!’,” the 33-year-old actress told the ‘Not Skinny But Not Fat’ podcast.

The actress added: “And then we just never planned a wedding because we were like, ‘We kind of did it.’ But we’ll do it. I think we have a very loose plan, which is appropriate to us.”

Before the two get married, Stewart wants to direct a movie ‘The Chronology of Water’, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Stewart said: “I’m directing a movie soon, and so I have to do that before we get married. Because we have to send invites out and give people time to get ready for that.”

IPL 2024 Points Table: LSG Register Big Win Against PBKS, Move Up To…

Lucknow Super Giants moved up to the fifth spot in the IPL 2024 points table with their first victory in this year’s competition. Quinton De Kock, Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran contributed with the bat while debutant Mayank Yadav impressed with the ball as LSG comprehensively defeated Punjab Kings by 21 runs. As a result of the defeat, PBKS are currently sixth with 2 points from 3 matches. Chennai Super Kings are the leaders followed by Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

India unearthed a new fast-bowling star in Mayank Yadav (3/27) who stole the limelight with his searing pace amid the usual flurry of monstrous hits as Lucknow Super Giants humbled Punjab Kings by 21 runs in the IPL here on Saturday.

Asked to bat first, floater Krunal Pandya’s late blitz powered LSG to a competitive 199/8.

Opener Quinton de Kock top-scored for LSG with a 38-ball 54 but it was stand-in skipper Nicholas Pooran’s 21-ball 42, which infused life into his team’s innings in the middle overs.

On the back of two sixes and four boundaries, Krunal then scored at a strike rate of 200 to finish on a 22-ball 43 and give his side extra cushion.

That total proved to be enough for LSG, who registered their first win of this IPL thanks to Mayank’s exploits. Punjab, who ended at 178/5, missed Liam Livingstone‘s service as he was injured.

In the 12th over of Punjab’s innings, Mayank bowled the tournament’s fastest ball at 155.8 kmph.

It was Mayank’s extra pace that rattled Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma and led to their downfall. He consistently clocked 150 and above on the speedometer during his four-over spell, emerging as the night’s hero.

This was after the dashing opening combo of Shikhar Dhawan (70 off 50 balls) and Bairstow (42 off 29 balls) quickly got the measure of what looked like a very good surface for batting, both getting a few boundaries to set the ball rolling.

PBKS skipper Dhawan made a statement of sorts when he reverse-swept M Siddharth over backward point.

Thanks to their attacking approach, PBKS raced to 61 for no loss in the power play and continued in the same vein with Dhawan bringing up his fifty with a maximum off Ravi Bishnoi.

Bairstow was equally marauding and struck Krunal Pandya for two successive sixes as the visitors crossed 100 in the 11th over.

Bishnoi put the brakes on PBKS’ scoring with a tight 11th over, giving away just three runs, and that forced Bairstow to go after Mayank but the batter miscued and ended up throwing away his wicket. It was the fast bowler’s maiden IPL wicket.

Prabhsimran blazed away to a seven-ball 19 before becoming Mayank’s second victim.

Dhawan tried hard to keep his team in the game, but PBKS could not keep up with the asking rate and soon, the Punjab captain too succumbed to the pressure and Jitesh failed to tackle Mayank’s extra pace.

Earlier, De Kock got the LSG innings underway with a splendid drive through mid-off for a boundary.

Playing the game as ‘impact player’ having handed over the leadership responsibility to Nicholas Pooran, KL Rahul didn’t look convincing as he tried to flick Kagiso Rabada behind square on the leg-side.

Running in from a long way, a diving Harshal Patel made a valiant attempt to latch on to the ball but Rahul was lucky as the fielder could not pull off what would have been a blinder.

At the other end, De Kock was in his elements as he flayed Rabada over point for a four in the first delivery he faced from the South African speedster.

Next ball de Kock did one better, as he opened the face of the bat to whack Rabada over the backward point boundary for a six.

Rahul drove Arshdeep Singh down the ground for a maximum, and then, smashed another delivery in a similar fashion, but that fetched him a four.

Arshdeep, however, exacted his revenged when the left-arm seamer had the LSG batter caught by Jonny Bairstow at backward point for a nine-ball 15.

Devdutt Padikkal got himself two boundaries before being dismissed by Sam Curran (3/28).

Marcus Stoinis (19) hit two sixes before being bowled by Rahul Chahar as he looked to hoick the spinner on the on-side.

That brought Pooran into the middle and the West Indian quickly got into the groove, hitting Chahar for two sixes and a four for a 20-run over, which gave LSG’s run rate a much-needed impetus.

Meanwhile, De Kock brought up his half century in 34 balls but a strategic timeout broke LSG’s momentum as the left-handed South African batter top-edged a short Arshdeep delivery for wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma to complete an easy catch.

Pooran kept the scoreboard moving at a good rate until he dragged a Rabada delivery onto the stumps, a big blow for LSG at a crucial juncture.

New man Krunal Pandya did not waste any time to settle down, brilliantly dispatching a short Rabada delivery over midwicket for a maximum. Curran bowled a tight 17th over to halt LSG’s charge, but Krunal got a flurry of boundaries to prop up LSG.

Pak Court Jails 51 Imran Khan Supporters For 5 Years Over May 9 Violence

Lahore:

A Pakistani court on Saturday convicted 51 supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan for five years of rigorous imprisonment on two counts for their involvement in attacking key military installations last year.

In May last year, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supporters had allegedly attacked several military installations, including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad, to vent their anger against the arrest of their party founder in a corruption case.

This is the first conviction in the cases registered against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders, workers and supporters in connection with the May 9 riots in the country, mostly in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

The convicts include Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf lawmaker Kaleemullah Khan.

The anti-terrorism court (ATC), Gujranwala handed down a year jail term to 51 supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on two counts for attacking the Gujranwala Cantonment (some 80 km from Lahore), law enforcement agencies personnel and torching police vehicles.

According to a court official, the court also imposed a fine of PKR 10,000 on each of them.

ATC Judge Natasha Naseem held the proceedings in the Central Jail, Gujranwala amid high security outside the jail and announced the verdict. The proceedings of the cases against the convict remained in-camera.

In the May 9 violence in Gujranwala, one Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf worker was killed and scores of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers and policemen were injured.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf claims that over 10,000 of its leaders and workers, and supporters of Imran Khan have been languishing in different jails of Punjab and KP provinces since May last and they are not provided a fair chance to defend themselves against phoney charges.

Imran Khan, himself, has been in jail since August last year and just before the February 8 polls, he was sentenced to a 31-year jail term in three different cases. In total, he is facing over 200 cases.
