New Delhi: Spiritual leader Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev underwent an emergency brain surgery at a private hospital here, a statement from the hospital said on Wednesday.

The surgery was carried out on March 17 to remove bleeding in the skull. Sadhguru was weaned off the ventilator post-surgery, the statement from Indraprastha Apollo Hospital said, adding he has shown “steady progress and his brain, body and vital parameters have improved”.

The 66-year-old spiritual guru is the founder of the Isha Foundation and has launched campaigns like ‘Save Soil’ and ‘Rally for Rivers’ for environment conservation.

He had been suffering from severe headaches for the last four weeks. Despite the severity of the pain, he continued with his normal daily schedule and social activities and even conducted the Maha Shivaratri function on March 8, the statement said.

The headache worsened by March 15, when he consulted Dr Vinit Suri, the hospital’s senior consultant neurologist, over phone, it said.

Suri immediately suspected a subdural haematoma and advised an urgent MRI, it added.

The spiritual leader underwent a brain MRI on the same day, and it revealed massive bleeding in the skull.

“There was evidence of a chronic bleed of three to four weeks duration as well as fresh bleeding that had occurred within a duration of 24 to 48 hours,” the statement said.

Sadhguru was advised immediate hospitalisation and appropriate medication schedule adjustment, but he had important meetings and events scheduled for March 15 and March 16, it said, adding he completed the meetings with the support of pain medication.

On March 17, he developed a decline in his level of consciousness, and weakness in the left leg, and was admitted to the medical facility under the care of Dr Suri. The CT scan revealed a marked increase in brain swelling and a decision was taken to operate, it said.

Sadhguru was managed by a team of doctors comprising Dr Vinit Suri, Dr Pranav Kumar, Dr Sudheer Tyagi and Dr S Chatterjee and underwent an emergency brain surgery on March 17 to remove the bleeding in the skull, the statement said.

'Top Players May Miss Paris Olympics': Lahiri On LIV-OWGR Stand-Off

India’s Anirban Lahiri feels many top-ranked golfers may not qualify for the Paris Olympics due to the stand-off between LIV Golf and Official World Golf Ranking, saying it could prove to be a wake-up call for the world to take some action. The 36-year-old Lahiri plays in the Saudi-funded LIV Golf, which is not recognised by the Official World Golf Ranking, making it extremely tough for him to grab one of the 60 spots at the Games. “There’s no point in speculating on what ifs. The reality of the situation is what it is. And within that framework, you have to find a way to qualify,” said Lahiri, who will be competing at the Hero India Open this week, told reporters.

“You know, it might be a situation where a lot of really good golfers are going to be in the top 10, who could be playing for their countries, don’t make it to Paris.

“And maybe that’s what’s needed for the world to wake up and say we need to do something. You know, there’s many ways to look at it.” Lahiri will have to earn the ranking points denied to the LIV Golf fraternity via the Asian Tour and also the Indian Open, where he will return after five years.

“Unless I play well this week and potentially one or two more events, there is not much to look forward to unfortunately. I’m trying my best obviously, that’s a big motivating factor for me to play well this week,” he said.

“I would love to go to Paris. Whether I play well or not play well doesn’t reflect in the current world golf rankings, unfortunately. But that’s how it is. So I have to do the best with whatever opportunities that I have. I can’t cry over it.

“When it (OWGR) gets fixed, how it gets fixed, does it needs to be fixed, those are different questions. Right now, I can control the next four rounds and then may be one or two event I can play, that’s what I can do, give my absolute best.” Lahiri, who has already participated in two Olympics, is currently the third Indian in the official rankings behind Shubhankar Sharma (202) and Gaganjeet Bhullar (240).

“I had two goes at it (Olympics), I have a whole list of excuses for not playing well (laughs) but then let bygones be bygones.

“It’s like a major championship, right? You want to have as many starts at majors as possible to contend and to win. So it’s the same thing. The Olympics are fewer and much further in between.

“I don’t know where my goal for the world of golf will be four years from now. So I need to focus on, as I said, potentially eight rounds or 12 rounds that I have between now and Paris that will get me there.” Lahiri played two events in February and then competed at Jeddah and Hong Kong this month in LIV but decided to skip the Macau event on the Asian Tour as his “body was feeling the burnt”.

“I feel I am playing really week. Honestly, my performance has been sporadic in LIV. I had just one good week but, by and large, I feel I played well. I haven’t scored my best. I have taken an extra week off to prepare for this week.

“I feel rested and focused and I want to go out there and contend and be in contention on Sunday. I would love nothing more and I feel I am ready for it.” After a phenomenal 2015, which saw him win twice on the European Tour, and the T5 finish at the PGA Championship aiding his elevation to the PGA Tour, Lahiri had a comparatively quiet phase, until he finished runner-up at The Players Championship in 2022.

It was a second runner-up finish since the Indian’s run at the 2017 Memorial Tournament. He then switched to LIV Golf but a title has eluded him although he came close in Boston in 2022 and Adelaide, Bedminister and Chicago in 2023.

“It’s been a while and nobody feels that more than I do. You know the weight of I don’t know how many dozens of seconds I’ve had, lays heaviest on my shoulders. So I need to get that off my back,” said Lahiri.

“It takes me back to when I was starting my career. So even though I’ve played 15-16 years, I’m still as desperate to win this week because I have to prove it to myself. I don’t have to prove it to anybody else.

“The first time I played here was 1999, so it goes down memory lanes. I came here with fewer hairs and more grey this year, so time has passed. It has been a fantastic ride. So it is an important week for me.”

BRS will make strong comeback after LS polls, says Padma Rao

Hyderabad: BRS Secunderabad MP candidate and sitting MLA T Padma Rao stated that the BRS, which led the Telangana movement and achieved Statehood, could not be wiped out from Telangana due to a minor setback in the recent Assembly polls. He asserted that the party would make an aggressive comeback with the Lok Sabha elections, by winning a majority of the MP seats in the State.

Addressing the party cadre from Secunderabad parliamentary constituency at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday, Padma Rao said movements and agitations were not new to the BRS, which was ready to fight the anti-people policies of the Congress in the State and the BJP at the Centre.

He reminded that unlike the Congress and the BJP, which spend time in raking up unnecesary issues like caste and religion, the BRS spent 10 outstanding years for development of Telangana, especially Hyderabad, on all fronts.

“We have no hesitation to sit in the opposition for the next five years and fight on behalf of the people,” he said.

Sanathnagar MLA Talasani Srinivas Yadav said within the 100 days of Congress rule, Telangana was experiencing horrible conditions that it suffered nearly a decade ago with power and water crisis.

The results of the Lok Sabha elections would be a slap on the face of both the Congress and the BJP which ignored the needs of people of Telangana, he said.

Russia Blames Kyiv, West Over Moscow Concert Hall Attack

Russia Blames Kyiv, West Over Moscow Concert Hall Attack

Putin has acknowledged that “radical Islamists” conducted the bloody assault (File)

Russia on Tuesday sought to shift blame for the Moscow concert hall attack onto Ukraine and its Western backers, despite the Islamic State group claiming responsibility for the massacre of at least 139 people.

The Kremlin’s security services have been scrambling to explain how gunmen on Friday managed to carry out the worst attack in Russia in over two decades.

President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged that “radical Islamists” conducted the bloody assault, but suggested they were linked to Ukraine, two years into the Kremlin’s offensive on the country.

The head of Russia’s FSB security agency Alexander Bortnikov said Tuesday that while those who had “ordered” the attack had not been identified, the assailants were heading to Ukraine and would have been “greeted as heroes”.

“We believe the action was prepared both by the radical Islamists themselves and, of course, facilitated by Western special services, and Ukraine’s special services themselves have a direct connection to this,” Bortnikov was cited as saying by Russian news agencies.

Ukraine has fiercely rejected any accusations from Moscow that it was tied to the assault, with a top aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky saying the Kremlin was looking to cover up the “incompetence” of its intelligence agencies.

Belarus undermines Kremlin narrative

Russia’s closest international ally, Belarusian strongman Alexander Lukashenko, appeared to undermine the Kremlin’s main narrative — saying that the attackers tried to enter his country first before heading to Ukraine.

“There was no way they could enter Belarus. They saw that. That’s why they turned away and went to the section of the Ukrainian-Russian border,” he said.

The Kremlin has expressed confidence in the country’s powerful security agencies, despite questions swirling over how they failed to thwart the massacre after public and private warnings from the United States.

Islamic State jihadists have said several times since Friday that they were responsible, and IS-affiliated media channels have published graphic videos of the gunmen inside the venue.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said Paris had information that the jihadists were responsible and warned Russia against exploiting the attack to blame Ukraine.

The concert hall massacre was a major blow for Putin just over a week after he claimed a new term after one-sided elections the Kremlin billed as an endorsement of his military operation against Ukraine.

Putin on Monday said for the first time that “radical Islamists” were behind last week’s attack, but sought to tie it to Kyiv.

Without providing any evidence, Putin connected the attack at Crocus City Hall to a series of incursions into Russian territory by pro-Ukrainian sabotage groups, and said they were all part of efforts to “sow panic in our society”.

Eighth suspect remanded

A court in Moscow meanwhile on Tuesday remanded an eighth suspect in custody over the attack at the Moscow concert hall.

Moscow earlier announced it had detained 11 people in connection with the attack, which saw camouflaged gunmen storm into Crocus City Hall, open fire on concert-goers and set the building ablaze.

The court’s press service said the latest suspect to be remanded was a man originally from the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan.

Officials said he was ordered to be held in detention until at least May 22, without detailing the exact accusations against him.

Four men charged on Sunday with carrying out the attack are citizens of Tajikistan, also in mainly Muslim Central Asia.

Three more suspects — reportedly from the same family and including at least one Russian citizen — were charged on terror-related offences on Monday.

A Turkish official said two of the Tajik suspects had travelled “freely between Russia and Turkey” ahead of the attack.

The two had both spent time in Turkey shortly before the attack and entered Russia together on the same flight from Istanbul, the official said.

All of those held in custody have been charged with terrorism and face up to life in prison.

The Kremlin has so far pushed back at suggestions the death penalty will be re-introduced after the attack.

Karimnagar: Karimnagar rural police registered a case against four persons including a revenue official for occupying land by forging documents and arrested one of the accused on Tuesday.

Former Chinthakunta sarpanch and husband of Kothapalli ZPTC, Pittala Ravinder, Gaddam Adireddy, Nyalamadugu Rajaiah and the then Tahsildar Mohan Reddy were booked under various sections.

Pittala Ravinder was arrested and produced before court.

According to police, Govinda Rao owned 20 guntas of land in survey number 106 on the outskirts of Chinthakunta village. In Dharani portal, the land was registered in the name of Govinda Rao. However, the name was changed in the ‘pahani’ by tampering and was transferred onto the name of Nyalamadugu Chinna Veeraiah.

The then sarpanch Ravinder noticed this and in an attempt to grab the land, transferred the land onto the name of Rajaiah, whose father’s name was also Veeraiah. He did this by colluding with the then Tahsildar Mohan Reddy, police said.

According to free agreement, the land, later, was transferred onto the name of Gadda Adi Reddy in 2009. In 2010, Ravinder registered the land onto his name and started cultivation.

When Govinda Rao’s son Devidas Rao questioned this, Ravinder allegedly threatened to kill him. Based on the complaint lodged by Rao, police registered the case and began investigation and found that the documents were forged.

100 Percent Webcasting Of Polling Stations In Punjab: Official

100 Percent Webcasting Of Polling Stations In Punjab: Official

Polling for the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab will be held on June 1.

Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C on Tuesday said there will be 100 per cent webcasting of polling stations in the state during voting for the Lok Sabha polls on June 1.

The chief electoral officer also said flying squad vehicles and static surveillance teams are monitoring violations, if any, of the model code of conduct during the election process.

CCTV surveillance will be ensured inside all 24,433 polling stations in the state, he said in a statement.

Besides, cameras will be installed outside 1,884 polling stations in all 13 Lok Sabha constituencies, the CEO said.

Sibin C said they have introduced a revamped NextGen District Information System for Elections (DISE) this time.

It will be used to manage all aspects of elections, from collecting data of polling staff to scheduling rehearsals, randomizing polling staff and counting staff, he said, adding that this modernisation aims to make elections more efficient, transparent, and secure.

Polling for the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab will be held on June 1, the last phase of the seven-phase elections.

The poll activity management system (PAMS) used for deploying polling teams and updating voting information, such as commencement of polling and the status of voter queues at closing hours, has also been revamped to enhance efficiency of election-related activities, Sibin C said.

The CEO further said other innovative initiatives by the Election Commission of India included the voter helpline app, providing citizens with convenience in finding their names in the electoral roll, submitting online forms, downloading their digital photo voter slip, filing complaints, and receiving replies.

Another crucial initiative is the mobile application ‘Know Your Candidate,’ allowing electors to access details and criminal background of any candidate, he said.

This app aims to provide wider publicity and greater awareness regarding the criminal background of contesting candidates to ensure transparent elections, the statement said.

The CEO said other initiatives by the ECI, included the launch of mobile voter-friendly app cVIGIL, which enables people to report MCC violations, featuring live photo or video with location.

Any citizen can lodge a complaint through this mobile app, after which flying squads investigate the matter, and a returning officer takes a decision within 100 minutes, utilising GPS to track the violation’s location.

The Congress was neglecting the community. None of the community leaders were given cabinet berth and as an eyewash measure a leader was offered whip position, he alleged.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Munnuru Kapu Yuvaka Mandali has strongly objected to the raw deal being extended to the community leaders by the Congress in allotment of tickets to contest Lok Sabha elections, besides trying to suppress their voice.

There were over 50 lakh Munnuru Kapu voters in the State. Both BRS and BJP have accorded prominence to the community leaders in the recent Assembly elections and in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections, Munnuru Kapu Yuvaka Mandali secretary SP Kranthi Kumar said in a statement.

The Congress was neglecting the community. None of the community leaders were given cabinet berth and as an eyewash measure a leader was offered whip position, he alleged.

Accusing the Congress leadership of trying to suppress the voice of leaders from the community in the party, he said the Mandali condemned the party leadership targeting the community leaders and warning them of strict action for expressing their views.
