Pure veg fleet to stick with red uniforms: Zomato

New Delhi: Popular food delivery and restaurant aggregator company Zomato has decided that its newly introduced ‘Pure Vegetarian’ delivery fleet will continue to wear Zomato’s trademark red instead of green as originally conceived by the delivery start-up.

“All our riders — both our regular fleet, and our fleet for vegetarians, will wear the colour red,” Deepinder Goyal said on Wednesday in its latest update.

“This means that the fleet meant for vegetarian orders will not be identifiable on the ground (but will show on the app that your veg orders will be served by the veg only fleet). This will ensure that our red uniform delivery partners are not incorrectly associated with non-veg food, and blocked by any RWAs or societies during any special days… our rider’s physical safety is of paramount importance to us. We now realise that even some of our customers could get into trouble with their landlords, and that would not be a nice if that happened because of us” Goyal said in his post on X.

Earlier on Tuesday, Zomato said it had launched a ‘Pure Veg’ delivery fleet to serve customers with purely vegetarian dietary preferences. Zomato said this segment was introduced after getting feedback from purely vegetarian customers who are very particular about how their food is cooked, and how their food is handled.

Zomato had said that the ‘Pure Veg’ delivery mode would consist of a curation of restaurants that serve only pure vegetarian food and will exclude all restaurants which serve any non-veg food item.

“Our dedicated Pure Veg Fleet will only serve orders from these pure veg restaurants. This means that a non-veg meal, or even a veg meal served by a non-veg restaurant will never go inside the green delivery box meant for our Pure Veg Fleet,” said Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal in a post on his X timeline.
In his comments on X, the Zomato founder said that the concept of a ‘Pure Veg’ fleet had drawn overwhelming response from customers.

“I have received an overwhelmingly positive response on this launch from so many people. A lot of comments from young people who eat non-veg food saying “now my parents can also use Zomato”. I would like to repeat that this feature strictly serves a dietary preference. And I know there are a lot of customers who would never order food from a restaurant which serves meat, irrespective of their religion/caste” Goyal posted.

“But why did we need to separate the fleets? Because despite everyone’s best efforts, sometimes the food spills into the delivery boxes. In those cases, the smell of the previous order travels to the next order, and may lead to the next order smelling of the previous order. For this reason, we had to separate the fleet for veg orders. Please note that participation in our Veg delivery fleet will not discriminate on the basis of our delivery partner’s dietary preferences” he added.

“There’s an opinion that some societies and RWAs will now not let our regular fleet in. We will stay alert for any such cases and work with these RWAs to not let this happen. We understand our social responsibility due to this change, and we will not back down from solving it when the need arises. And I promise, that if we see any significant negative social repercussions of this change, we will roll it back in a heartbeat” he further said.

To start with, Deepinder Goyal himself stepped out to deliver some pure veg orders with his delivery partners. This feature will see a phased rollout across the country in the next few weeks.

Deepinder Goyal said Zomato also plans to add more specialised fleets for special customer needs. It said a special cake delivery fleet is coming up with hydraulic balancers which will prevent the cake from getting smudged during delivery.

"If They Start Losing…": Ex-IND Star's Big Warning For MI Skipper Hardik

Rohit Sharma (L) and Hardik Pandya© AFP

Former Indian cricket team fast bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji believes that it will take time for Hardik Pandya to make his own place as Mumbai Indians skipper after replacing Rohit Sharma ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Hardik ended Rohit’s ten-year tenure as MI skipper after completing a huge trade move from Gujarat Titans. The fanbase as well as some experts have been split over the decision but Balaji believes that Hardik is good enough to handle the new responsibility. However, he also pointed out that if the team starts losing, the new skipper may end up facing major problems.

“It’s been going on for a while, definitely it’s not normally something which you see, a lot of friendships happen, players have gone to different franchises, yes this is one of the cases, but being in a professional field you have to accept that one side is emotional and one side is something very big, when you come to replace a personality like Rohit Sharma who is already a phenomenal achiever when it comes to Mumbai Indians. Definitely it will take some time, it will settle.”

“And you have to win your own men, so for Hardik to win the whole dressing room is very important as a player and as a human so definitely that trust needs to be earned and it will take some time to adapt and accept and I’m sure he’s good enough and professional enough and he’ll accept that and he’s got a young team around him and when they start winning the emotions will be different. If they start losing, then you have problems to face. So slowly things will pop up. It’s better to have a friend in a winning front rather than a losing front,” he said on Star Sports.

Former Indian cricket team all-rounder Irfan Pathan was extremely critical of Hardik Pandya after Mumbai Indians’ loss to Gujarat Titans in their opening match of IPL 2024.

It was the first match as MI captain for Hardik and Pathan believes that he committed couple of major mistakes that ended up costing his side the match.

Hardik opened the bowling for his side and ended up conceding 20 runs in the first over. Pathan believed that he should have gone with an experienced asset like Jasprit Bumrah instead.

US Bridge Collapses After Ship Crashes Into It: What We Know So Far

US Bridge Collapses After Ship Crashes Into It: What We Know So Far

Baltimore:

A major bridge collapsed in the US city of Baltimore after being struck by a heavily laden container ship.
Many questions remain, including how the ship could have lost control. Here’s what we know so far:

What happened?

At approximately 1:30 am (0530 GMT) the Singapore-flagged container ship Dali, departing Baltimore with a full cargo en route to Sri Lanka, crashed into a concrete pier supporting the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Within seconds almost the entire bridge collapsed and plunged into what officials said was roughly 50 feet (15 meters) of frigid water below.

Moments before, the ship issued a Mayday call warning that it had lost power — prompting authorities to scramble to shut down traffic to the bridge, potentially saving lives.

A search and rescue operation involving divers, boats, aircraft and sophisticated sonar and infrared equipment is under way.

How many casualties are there?

Officials say they are searching for at least six members of an eight-person construction crew that was at work repairing potholes on the bridge.

Two other people have already been pulled from the water. One was unhurt, but the other was seriously injured and rushed to hospital.

There was some confusion over whether any people may still be trapped in cars that may have been on the bridge when it collapsed.

Baltimore’s fire chief James Wallace said sonar has found vehicles in the water, but he could not give further details.

Maryland’s Governor Wes Moore said the investigation was still ongoing, while state Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said officials “do not believe” any people were trapped in cars.

The managers of the Dali, Synergy Marine Group, said that none of the crew were injured.

What caused it?

The Dali issued a Mayday call moments before the crash, warning that it had lost power and propulsion. It’s not yet clear what caused the power outage.

“As a result, it was unable to maintain the desired heading and collided with the Francis Scott Key bridge,” Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement, citing Synergy Marine Group.

CCTV footage shows the ship going dark twice in the minutes before the crash. A puff of smoke can also be seen before the collision.

Singapore’s MPA said the Dali had dropped its anchors prior to the crash as part of its emergency procedures. Doing so can help slow the passage of an out-of-control ship.

Officials have said repeatedly that there is “no indication” of terrorism.

Some experts suggested the bridge’s main support structures may not have been properly protected to withstand a collision by such a large vessel.

“The significant momentum of this massive cargo vessel, especially when laden with cargo, would have been considerable upon impact,” said Toby Mottram, a structural engineering professor at the University of Warwick.

“It’s evident that the pier couldn’t withstand the impact energy…. The extent of the damage to the bridge superstructure appears disproportionate to the cause,” Mottram said.

What happens next?

Authorities have closed the port “until further notice” and traffic is being diverted away from the bridge as the rescue effort continues.

Officials have said that finding any survivors is their only priority at the moment. Moore declared a state of emergency.

They are also monitoring for any fuel spill from the stricken Dali, though none has been confirmed yet.

The collapse is expected to have a severe impact on the region. Traffic around Baltimore will be affected by the loss of the bridge, while shipping could also see long delays thanks to the debris now choking the waterway.

UK Police Share Family Tribute To Indian PhD Student Killed In London

UK Police Share Family Tribute To Indian PhD Student Killed In London

The police said Kochhar was pursuing her PhD in behavioural research at the London School of Economics.

London:

The Metropolitan Police in London on Tuesday officially named a former NITI Aayog employee Cheistha Kochhar as the 33-year-old woman who was killed in a road collision in north London while she cycled back home from London School of Economics (LSE).

There have been no arrests a week after the incident, police said.

The police said Kochhar, who was pursuing her PhD in behavioural research at the LSE, died following a collision involving a refuse lorry on Clerkenwell Road near the junction with Farringdon Road on March 19 evening.

The force said enquiries into the circumstances of the collision are ongoing as officers continue to appeal for witnesses and for any road users with dashcam footage from the scene to come forward.

“Cheistha was cycling when she was involved in a collision with a refuse lorry – the lorry stopped at the scene and the driver is helping police with their enquiries. There has been no arrest and enquiries into the circumstances continue,” the Met Police said.

The police also released a statement on behalf of Cheistha Kochhar’s family, which praises her “deep intelligence” and “sprightly demeanour” which won her many friends.

“She always had a hug to spare for anyone and she lived her life with the principle that it was more important to be the kindest person in the room, than to be the smartest person in the room. In the short span she had on this planet, she touched tens of thousands of people in extremely meaningful ways and the magnitude of this loss is incomprehensible,” the family tribute reads.

Cheistha was born in Bareilly in 1990 and graduated high school from the Convent of Jesus and Mary, New Delhi. After graduating from Delhi University with a BA in Economics and Mathematics in 2008, she went on to finish the PGP in Liberal Arts as a Young India Fellow from Ashoka University and then did another post-graduation from the University of Chicago in International Development and Policy (MAIDP).

“She had also started a couple of Start-Ups, first as an undergraduate to distribute excess food from college canteens to the needy and later to create opportunities for the unemployed underprivileged section of the New Delhi society. She also worked with McKinsey and the University of Chicago and last worked at NITI Aayog of India (formerly Planning Commission), where she established the National Behavioural Insights Unit of India as a Senior Advisor. All this happened before she turned 32,” the family statement shares.

“In spite of her experience as a practitioner and an executive, she had the heart of an academician, having worked and collaborated with Nobel laureates, and she finally came to London as a PhD Scholar in LSE. Even though these were early stages of her PhD, she was sure to work on studying and improving collaboration between various pro-social organisations to tackle the grand challenges that countries from the Global South face. She was an ardent patriot and wanted to bring all her expertise back to India to change lives,” it concludes.

Earlier, former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant took to social media to shower praise on Kochhar, who had moved from Gurugram to London in September last year to enroll as a Doctorate Candidate at the LSE.

Kant said: “Cheistha Kochhar worked with me on the #LIFE [Lifestyle for the Environment] programme in NITI Aayog. She was in the #Nudge unit and had gone to do her PhD in behavioural science at LSE. Passed away in a terrible traffic incident while cycling in London. She was bright, brilliant & brave and always full of life. Gone away too early. RIP.” Kochhar served as Senior Advisor at the National Behavioural Insights Unit of India for nearly two years until April last year, before moving to London with her software engineer husband Prashant Gautam.

“I am still in London trying to collect the remains of my daughter, Cheistha Kochhar. She was run over by a truck on 19 March while cycling back from LSE, where she was doing her PhD,” her father Lieutenant General Dr S P Kochhar, Director General at the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), said in an emotional post on LinkedIn.

“It has devastated us and her large circle of friends,” he said, along with a link to an online memorial page created in her memory.

The memorial page opens with a quote from Cheistha, which reads: “What we create should last longer than we do,” and is followed by several moving tributes posted by friends and family.

"My Game Got Worse": Sehwag Shreds IPL Franchise For Ruining His Form

Out of the old IPL franchises, which have been playing since the inaugural 2008 edition, only three franchises – Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals – are yet to win the T20 league. Indian cricket team great Virender Sehwag played for PBKS (then Kings XI Punjab) for two seasons. Now, in a blatant dig at the franchise, Sehwag has termed his time with the franchise resulted in his spectacular loss of form.

Jab mein Punjab mein gaya tab mera strike rate gir gaya. Woh kehte hai na ke jaisi sangati waisa behave karte ho. Toh waha ki sangati waisi hi thi. Jeet te the nahi, khel te acha the nahi, toh mera game aur thoda kharab ho gaya (When I went to Punjab, my strike rate went down. There’s a saying you behave like your company. Same was the case. They did not win anything or played well),” Sehwag said while speaking on Star Sports.

The start of the IPL 2024 has been lukewarm for Punjab Kings. After winning the first match against Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their second match on Monday.

Following his side’s win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) game, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Faf Du Plessis lauded Virat Kohli for his knock, saying that his stay was important at that playing surface and he is still passionate about the sport.
The ‘Chasemaster’ Virat roared out loud and Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik delivered fine finishes to help RCB secure four wicket win over PBKS at their home turf of Chinaswammy Stadium on Monday.

Following the match, Du Plessis said about Virat, “Virat was important on that pitch. He is still enjoying himself, very passionate about playing cricket. Fresh and motivated to do well.”

On his feelings throught the tense run chase, Faf said, “On the outside, not as much on the inside (was he calm?). Early in the competition you want to make sure you get over the line. Felt we were in the position to do that sooner. With the new Impact Player rule, we knew we had Mahipal Lomror coming in – has lot of power. Now with the extra batter you feel like even 14-15 rpo is gettable.”

He praised Dinesh for his finishing, saying, “Really pleased for him (DK). I said it the other night – really important for him to get his IPL going with confidence.”

Coming to the match, put to field by RCB, Punjab Kings (PBKS) saw their batters getting starts but none of them could convert it into something big. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan (45 in 37 balls with five fours and a six), Jitesh Sharma (27 in 20 balls with a four and two sixes) and Sam Curran (23 in 17 balls) played decent knocks, but on a batting friendly Chinnaswammy, PBKS could muster only 176/6 in 20 overs.

Mohammed Siraj (2/26) and Glenn Maxwell (2/29) took two scalps each. Yash Dayal and Alzarri Joseph took a wicket each.

In the chase of 177, RCB continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, but Virat (77 in 49 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes) held the ship steady at the other end. After his dismissal, things got tricky for RCB, but finishing from Dinesh Karthik (28* in 10 balls, with three fours and two sixes) and Mahipal Lomror (17* in eight balls, with two fours and a six) guided the team to a four-wicket win with four balls left.

Harpreet Brar (2/13) and Kagiso Rabada (2/23) were the pick of the bowlers for PBKS.

Virat was crowned the ‘Player of the Match’

Elon Musk's xAI To Enable Chatbot Grok For All Premium Subscribers Of X

Elon Musk announced it in a post on X, without revealing any more details.

California:

Elon Musk said on Tuesday artificial intelligence startup xAI’s chatbot, Grok, will be enabled for all premium subscribers of social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

He announced it in a post on X, without revealing any more details. Previously, the chatbot was available only to Premium+ subscribers.

As more advertisers move away from the microblogging platform, the billionaire has stressed on reducing the company’s reliance on advertising and has turned his focus to more attractive subscription plans.

Earlier this month, Musk said xAI would open-source Grok, after he sued OpenAI for allegedly abandoning its original mission in favor of a for-profit model.

The move could give the public free access to experiment with the code behind the technology and aligns xAI with firms such as Meta and France’s Mistral, both of which have open-source AI models.
