CM Stalin to kickstart INDIA bloc campaign from TN’s Tiruchi on March 22

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who is also the president of the DMK, will commence the election campaign of the INDIA bloc from Friday.

DMK leader and state Minister K.N. Nehru is in charge of Friday’s inaugural programme which will begin from Siruganur in Tiruchi.

Minister Nehru while speaking to IANS said that the programme will be addressed by Chief Minister Stalin, MDMK leader Vaiko and a galaxy of senior leaders of the INDIA bloc. Vaiko’s son and senior MDMK leader Durai Vaiko is the INDIA bloc candidate from Tiruchi.

The minister, who was often referred to as a man of big programmes by late DMK leader and former Chief Minister K. Karunanidhi and now Stalin is overseeing the entire preparations for the programme.

Tiruchi is considered as a lucky point to start an election campaign and the DMK, which is a political formulation based on Periyar‘s ideology of atheism, ironically commences its election voyage from Tiruchi. Karunanidhi himself referred to Tiruchi as ‘Thiruppumunai Tiruchi’ (turning point Tiruchi) and Stalin also refers to Tiruchi with nostalgia.

Minister Nehru said that the Chief Minister will visit all the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies spread across the state and would introduce the INDIA bloc candidates.

The DMK is contesting 21 seats, Congress nine, CPI(M) two, CPI two, VCK two, MDMK one, IUML one and KMDK one.

In the 2019 general elections, the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) led by the DMK won in 38 of the 39 seats it contested and CM Stalin is now aiming at a clean sweep in the 2024 polls.

The Chief Minister had in his address to the party cadres and local leaders asserted to work hard at the grassroots to ensure a total victory to all the INDIA bloc candidates.

"A Dwarf Is A Dwarf": Sidhu's Epic Take On Hardik-Rohit MI Captaincy Row

Former Indian cricket team batter Navjot Singh Sidhu had his say about Rohit Sharma playing under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 after the much-talked-about change in captaincy. Hardik, who completed a sensational trade move from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians, replaced Rohit as the skipper ahead of IPL 2024 and the move has led to massive conversations among fans and experts. In a recent interaction, Sidhu said that Dhoni and Rohit are great players in their own right, and playing in a franchise team under another captain does not diminish their position.

“I have played in an Indian team where five captains used to pay together. Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Ravi Shastri. Pick up a brick and you will find a captain both above and below it. There were no issues because they were playing for their nation. The motivation was to play for your country. So, playing under Hardik does not make Rohit smaller.”

Dhoni has passed the baton already and that could have happened in Mumbai Indians as well. But this is a franchise and they look at the performances. They gave it three years and when it did not work, they got a new person for the job. You need to accept it. But Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are great players. A dwarf is a dwarf even if he is standing at the top of a mountain and a God is a God even if they are standing at the bottom of a well,” Sidhu said during the analysis on Star Sports.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians’ batting coach Kieron Pollard backed Hardik Pandya’s move to open the bowling instead of Jasprit Bumrah and also said the skipper batting at number seven in their IPL opener against Gujarat Titans was a “collective decision”.

An inexplicable batting strategy saw MI lose their opener by six runs here on Sunday after they looked on course for victory.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bowl first and surprisingly, Hardik opened the bowling against his former side.

“You have to plan and decide what you want to do as a team. Hardik (Pandya) has also bowled with the new ball for Gujarat over the last couple of years. He swung the new ball and bowled it well, which was nothing new to us.

“We tried to use the advantage of the new ball swinging along. When I look at the decision made, there is nothing wrong with it, and we move on,” Pollard said at the post-match press conference.

6 Feared Dead After US Bridge Collapse, Indian Crew On Ship Safe

US Bridge Collapse: 6 Feared Dead, Indian Crew Safe On Ship That Collided

Video footage showed the packed container ship slamming into one of the bridge’s supports

Six people are feared dead after a ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in US’ Baltimore on Tuesday causing it to collapse and plunge into water. Authorities have called off rescue operations, presuming that those missing have died in the collision.

The container ship Dali, manned entirely by an Indian crew, momentarily lost power and rammed into the bridge. While all 22 crew were unharmed and accounted for, six repairmen on the bridge have been missing. They were part of a construction crew working on repairing potholes on the bridge when it collapsed around midnight.

“Based on the length of time that we’ve gone in this search, the extensive search efforts that we put into it, the water temperature… at this point we do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” US Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said, as quoted by news agency AFP.

The police said they are now stepping away from search operations and moving on to recovery as the temperatures and currents in the water make it difficult for divers to stay underwater for long.

The Indian Embassy in US condoled the horrific crash and issued a helpline for any Indian citizens affected by the collision. “Our heartfelt condolences to all affected by the unfortunate accident at the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. For any Indian citizens that may be affected/ require assistance, the Embassy of India has created a dedicated hotline: please reach out to us on +1-202-717-1996,” it wrote on X.

Crew tried to avert crisis

Around midnight on Tuesday, the ship experienced a momentary loss of propulsion due to which it was unable to control its direction. Expecting a collision with the 1977 bridge, the ship sent out an Mayday signal (distress call) to warn of the imminent crash. Anchors were dropped as a last ditch effort to stop the ship from moving forward.

The Maryland Governor Wes Moore said the distress call was crucial as it helped bridge officials to stop vehicles from going on it. When the ship hit the bridge, multiple vehicles and 20 people fell into the Patapsco River. Video footage showed the high-speed 300-metre container ship slamming into one of the bridge’s legs.

“We’re thankful that between the Mayday and the collapse that we had officials who were able to begin to stop the flow of traffic. These people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” Mr Moore said, according to AFP.

Some social media theories claimed the crash was a cyber attack on US and marked the “beginning of WW3”. However, the FBI and other US agencies said no they found connection that pointed to a terror plot behind the crash.

What happens next?

Search operation have been called off but overnight patrolling by boats will continue.

While the port has been closed “until further notice”, traffic is being diverted away from the bridge. Vehicular movement will be affected by the collapse as it was a vital connecting bridge in the area. Shipping may also be hit due to debris in the water.

The Maryland Governor declared a state of emergency and the authorities are monitoring for any fuel spill from the ship.

Centre To Consider Revoking AFSPA, Pull Back Troops From J&K: Amit Shah

Centre To Consider Revoking AFSPA, Pull Back Troops From J&K: Amit Shah

Amit Shah said the government has plans to leave law and order to the J&K Police alone (File)

New Delhi:

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the central government will consider revoking the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Jammu and Kashmir.

In an interview with the JK Media Group, Mr Shah also said the government has plans to pull back troops in the Union Territory (UT) and leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police alone.

“We have plans to pull back troops and leave law and order to the Jammu and Kashmir Police alone. Earlier, the Jammu and Kashmir police was not trusted but today they are leading the operations,” he said.

On the controversial AFSPA, the home minister said, “We will also think of revoking AFSPA.”

The AFSPA gives the armed forces personnel, operating in the disturbed areas, sweeping powers to search, arrest and to open fire if they deem it necessary for “the maintenance of public order”.

An area or district is notified as disturbed under the AFSPA to facilitate the operations of the armed forces.

Mr Shah had earlier said the AFSPA has been removed in 70 per cent areas in the northeastern states even though it is in force in J-K.

There have been demands from various organisations and individuals in J-K and the northeastern states to revoke the AFSPA.

Mr Shah said the assembly elections will be held in J-K before September.

“Enshrining democracy in Jammu and Kashmir is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise and it will be fulfilled. However, this democracy will not be confined to three families alone and will be a people’s democracy,” he said.

The Supreme Court had directed to conduct the assembly polls in the UT before September.

On the issues that have emerged around the reservation of SCs, STs and OBCs, Mr Shah said for the first time, the OBCs of J-K have been given reservation by the Modi government and women have been given one-third reservation.

“OBC reservations have been made in the panchayat and the urban local bodies. We have made space for the SCs and the STs. Without reducing the share of the Gujjar and Bakarwals, the Pahadis have been given 10 per cent reservation. And special provisions have been made to accommodate the displaced people from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir,” he said.

The Centre is determined to ensure that these benefits percolate to the grassroots level, he said.

Mr Shah claimed that National Conference (NC) leader Farooq Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti tried their best to create acrimony on these reservations but the people have understood their intentions now.

He asked why the NC did not give reservation to these people in the last over 75 years.

The home minister claimed Abdullah had left for England when terrorism was at its peak. Both Abdullah and Mehbooba have no right to speak about on the issue, he added.

“The number of fake encounters that took place during their time has never been matched by any other regime,” he said.

Mr Shah said in the last five years, not a single fake encounter has taken place. Rather the FIRs have been lodged against the people involved in fake encounters, he added.

“We will have a dialogue with the youths of Kashmir and not with the organisations that have roots in Pakistan. They are responsible for the deaths of 40,000 youths,” he said.

He said the Modi government has banned 12 organisations for their involvement in terror activities, designated 36 individuals as terrorists, registered more than 22 cases to stop terror finance and seized properties worth Rs 150 crore.

As many as 90 properties were also attached and 134 bank accounts have been frozen, he said.

“We have enshrined peace, and peace cannot be bought. Whoever wants to have a dialogue has to do so within the ambit of the Constitution,” he said.

Mr Shah said the Hurriyat Conference has no place in the process of dialogue. He also made it clear that the BJP and the entire Parliament believe that the POK is an integral part of India.

“The Muslim brothers are also Indians and the Hindu brothers living in POK are also Indians and the land which has been illegally occupied by Pakistan also belongs to India. It is the goal of every Indian, every Kashmiri to get it back,” he said.

The home minister said in 2010, there were 2564 incidents of stone-pelting which now is zero.

From 2004 to 2014, there were 7217 terror incidents. That has reduced to 2227 from 2014 to 2023, and this is almost a 70 per cent reduction, he said.

Mr Shah said the total number of deaths from 2004 to 2014 was 2829 and it has come down to 915 during 2014-23, which is a 68 per cent decrease.

The deaths of civilians was 1770 and has decreased to 341, which is an 81 per cent drop. The deaths of security forces decreased from 1060 to 574, which is a 46 per cent decrease, he said.

The senior BJP leader said without the support of the people, such a comprehensive change can never take place.

“The people who talk about Islam should know that 85 per cent of the deceased were our Muslim brothers and sisters,” he said.

Mr Shah also asked the youths of J-K to stay away from the conspiracies of Pakistan.

“Today Pakistan is shrouded by the scourge of hunger and poverty and even people there see Kashmir as heaven. I want to tell everyone that if anyone can save Kashmir, he is Prime Minister Modi,” he said.

The home minister said the Modi government is boosting the morale of the security forces by giving jobs to the family members of the martyrs.

“Today, not a single martyr’s family is left without a job,” he said.

Damascus asks US to end illegitimate presence on Syrian soil

Syria’s Foreign Ministry bulling in Damascus

Syria has strongly condemned the recent act of aggression by US occupation forces, which targeted several areas in the country’s eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr, causing casualties.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that the US considers itself the world’s policeman under pretexts that violate both international law and international humanitarian law.

It stressed that Washington must end its illegitimate presence on Syrian soil and end its open support and funding of terrorist organizations like Daesh.

Calling for global action to counter US acts of aggression in West Asia, Syria vowed to bring the aggressors to justice in line with international law.

“Syria calls on world countries which struggle for their sovereignty, freedom and independence to condemn that aggression and reject it and demand the US to end its illegal presence and its terrorist military operations in the region,” the statement said.

A Syrian military source said US strikes hit several villages, towns and military sites.

They killed 7 soldiers and one civilian while injuring 19 soldiers and 13 civilians.

The strikes also caused huge material damage to public and private properties.

The United States conducts airstrikes in Syria under the pretext of fighting terrorism. Damascus has written numerous letters addressed to the United Nations, calling on the world body to end the US attacks and its military presence in the Arab country.

The Syrian government has always said that Israel and its Western and regional allies have been supporting Takfiri terrorist groups to continue to wreak havoc nationwide since March 2011, when the country fell into the grip of foreign-backed militancy.

The US military has stationed forces and equipment in northeastern Syria. The Pentagon claims the deployment is aimed at preventing the oilfields in the area from falling into the hands of Daesh terrorists.

But Damascus says the deployment is meant to plunder the rich resources of Syria.

US Bridge Collapses After Ship Crashes Into It: What We Know So Far

US Bridge Collapses After Ship Crashes Into It: What We Know So Far

Baltimore:

A major bridge collapsed in the US city of Baltimore after being struck by a heavily laden container ship.
Many questions remain, including how the ship could have lost control. Here’s what we know so far:

What happened?

At approximately 1:30 am (0530 GMT) the Singapore-flagged container ship Dali, departing Baltimore with a full cargo en route to Sri Lanka, crashed into a concrete pier supporting the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Within seconds almost the entire bridge collapsed and plunged into what officials said was roughly 50 feet (15 meters) of frigid water below.

Moments before, the ship issued a Mayday call warning that it had lost power — prompting authorities to scramble to shut down traffic to the bridge, potentially saving lives.

A search and rescue operation involving divers, boats, aircraft and sophisticated sonar and infrared equipment is under way.

How many casualties are there?

Officials say they are searching for at least six members of an eight-person construction crew that was at work repairing potholes on the bridge.

Two other people have already been pulled from the water. One was unhurt, but the other was seriously injured and rushed to hospital.

There was some confusion over whether any people may still be trapped in cars that may have been on the bridge when it collapsed.

Baltimore’s fire chief James Wallace said sonar has found vehicles in the water, but he could not give further details.

Maryland’s Governor Wes Moore said the investigation was still ongoing, while state Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said officials “do not believe” any people were trapped in cars.

The managers of the Dali, Synergy Marine Group, said that none of the crew were injured.

What caused it?

The Dali issued a Mayday call moments before the crash, warning that it had lost power and propulsion. It’s not yet clear what caused the power outage.

“As a result, it was unable to maintain the desired heading and collided with the Francis Scott Key bridge,” Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said in a statement, citing Synergy Marine Group.

CCTV footage shows the ship going dark twice in the minutes before the crash. A puff of smoke can also be seen before the collision.

Singapore’s MPA said the Dali had dropped its anchors prior to the crash as part of its emergency procedures. Doing so can help slow the passage of an out-of-control ship.

Officials have said repeatedly that there is “no indication” of terrorism.

Some experts suggested the bridge’s main support structures may not have been properly protected to withstand a collision by such a large vessel.

“The significant momentum of this massive cargo vessel, especially when laden with cargo, would have been considerable upon impact,” said Toby Mottram, a structural engineering professor at the University of Warwick.

“It’s evident that the pier couldn’t withstand the impact energy…. The extent of the damage to the bridge superstructure appears disproportionate to the cause,” Mottram said.

What happens next?

Authorities have closed the port “until further notice” and traffic is being diverted away from the bridge as the rescue effort continues.

Officials have said that finding any survivors is their only priority at the moment. Moore declared a state of emergency.

They are also monitoring for any fuel spill from the stricken Dali, though none has been confirmed yet.

The collapse is expected to have a severe impact on the region. Traffic around Baltimore will be affected by the loss of the bridge, while shipping could also see long delays thanks to the debris now choking the waterway.

Rahul Gandhi On Tourist Visa, I Have A Permanent One: BJP's Wayanad Pick

The Kerala BJP chief claimed Mr Gandhi “did not do anything” for Wayanad.

Insisting that the people of Wayanad are ready to repeat what their counterparts in Amethi did in 2019, the BJP’s pick as the candidate for the constituency, K Surendran, has said that voters are “fed up” with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as their MP.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV on Tuesday, the Kerala BJP chief also took a dig at Mr Gandhi and said that while the Congress leader travels across the country and even abroad and is in Wayanad on a “tourist visa”, he is a local resident and has a “permanent visa”.

To a question on why the BJP thinks it has hope in Wayanad this time despite Rahul Gandhi cornering over 64% of the vote in 2019 and winning by a margin of over 4 lakh votes, Mr Surendran said, “In 2109, people wholeheartedly welcomed Rahul ji and supported him (on a) large scale. But, unfortunately, nothing has happened. Rahul ji did not do anything for Wayanad. I am not saying he cheated Wayanad but people in the constituency are totally disappointed, fed up with Rahul Gandhi.”

“Such an irresponsible MP. How many times did Rahul Gandhi come to Wayanad? What progress, or project has he brought to the constituency? Over 20% of the population in Wayanad is from the Scheduled Tribes community. What is Rahul Gandhi’s contribution? This serious negligence is the talking point in Wayanad,” he claimed.

Pointing out that Wayanad had been given the ‘Aspirational District’ tag, Mr Surendran said that a committee, under the district collector, discusses various projects for it. He alleged that while Smriti Irani, who is a Union minister, attended the planning meetings twice, Mr Gandhi did not do so even once.

He also challenged Mr Gandhi to reveal which village he had selected under the Adarsh Gram Yojana and what his contribution there was. “Is there any project by Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad? How much money, apart from the MPLAD (Members of Parliament Local Area Development), has he gathered for Wayanad,” the BJP leader asked.

Number Crunching

On the BJP’s arithmetic in Wayanad given that the CPI has also fielded its National Executive Member, Annie Raja, Mr Surendran said, “Annie Raja is a big leader. She has a lot of responsibility in all states and is travelling all over India. Rahul Gandhi is travelling all over India and even abroad, but people of Wayanad actually want a local MP. I am from here. Both Rahul Gandhi ji and Annie Raja ji are on a tourist visa, I am on a permanent visa in Wayanad. I will work for the people of Wayanad, stay with them and solve their problems.”

“This is because I am a soldier of PM Modi. How many votes Rahul Gandhi won the last time is not the question. Look at Amethi, which was a Nehru family bastion for decades. The people of Wayanad will do what the people of Amethi did (in 2019),” he claimed.

In a shock victory, Ms Irani had defeated Mr Gandhi in Amethi in 2019 with a margin of just over 55,000 votes.

In Kerala, however, the Congress had won 15 of the state’s 20 Lok Sabha seats while the BJP had drawn a blank.

Mr Surendran continued, “I lost in the Manjeshwar Assembly seat (in 2021) by a narrow margin. I lost the Patnanamthitta Lok Sabha constituency by 80,000 votes. We are the third front in Kerala but Modi ji’s acceptance and popularity in Kerala is growing every day.”

“You see the crowd in Wayanad today to receive me. The crowd is not for me, it is for Narendra Modi ji. Modi’s guarantee will be the main election point in Kerala this time. We will win many seats in Kerala this time and Wayanad will be one of them,” he said.

Islamic Resistance in Iraq hit Israeli air base, military site with drones

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has said it has carried out new operations against Israeli targets in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Iraqi umbrella group of anti-terror groups said in a statement published on its Telegram channel on Wednesday that the first operation targeted the Ovda air base in the occupied Palestinian territories using drones.

“The Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, targeted on 03/26/2024, the Israeli Uvda Air Base with drones,” the Islamic Resistance statement said.

In the second operation, the resistance’s drones hit Israel’s Speer military site also in the occupied territories.

“The fighters of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq targeted this morning, Wednesday 27/3/2024, the ‘Speer’ military site of the Zionist occupation in our occupied lands by drones,” the statement said.

“The Mujahideen of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, targeted on 03/27/2024, the Israeli Speer military site with drones,” it added.

The Iraqi resistance said the operations were carried out in response to the latest massacres of the people of Gaza by Israel.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has carried out several key operations in recent months, including multiple attacks on Ben Gurion Airport, a power plant in Tel Aviv as well as major Israeli ports in solidarity with the people of Gaza.

They have also attacked US military bases in Iraq and neighboring Syria in response to Washington’s support for the Israeli genocide in Gaza.

This week the Islamic Resistance in Iraq targeted the headquarters of the Israeli regime’s ministry for military affairs in the occupied territories with a drone early on Sunday.

The Islamic Resistance statement said that “the fighters of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq targeted, at dawn today Sunday 3/24/2024, by drone, the headquarters building” of the Israeli ministry for military affairs in the occupied territories.

Israel has waged a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip since Oct. 7.

More than 32,300 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have since been killed in Gaza, and more than 74,000 injured.

The regime has also imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the Palestinians living there.

Mrunal said: “I’m a very family person. They’re always my number one. Spending quality time at home and having home cooked meals is what I prefer the most.”

The actress added: “Of course being an actor isn’t possible, but when I’m out, I eat a balanced meal, I don’t skip anything, but rather balance it and stick to proportions.”

Mrunal said that is what she has been taught.

The actress added: “I have a brilliant trainer, who pushes me to do my best work out and always allows me to reward myself with food that I truly do enjoy eating.”

“My diet usually is what we call a ‘grandma diet’, it’s essentially eating what your family has always eaten, with a balance of understanding of portions and nutrition,” said Mrunal.
