Hyderabad’s good samaritans rally to protect stray animals amidst looming heat wave

Hyderabad: With the forecast of a heat wave in Hyderabad this summer, the city’s Good Samaritans have stepped up efforts to care for the stray animals.

Along with placing the much-needed water bowls, animal welfare organisations are raising awareness of stray well-being during these blistering weather conditions.

Lack of shelter or access to water makes stray animals like dogs, cats, and cows vulnerable to dehydration, heatstroke, burnt paws, and other heat-related illnesses.

Avian species also face significant challenges during these months. Shakuntala Society for Animal Welfare and Nature (SWAN) which had previously collaborated with the GHMC has so far distributed over 1000 water bowls. Another NGO People for Animals (PFA) has also taken up the task of distributing and maintaining the water bowls, with around 1,500 bowls every year.

“We have over seven pick-up points across the city where anyone interested can come and take a water bowl for free. These are at pet stores or with our volunteers,” says a representative on SWAN.

Shalini from PFA adds that their organisation has area-wise caretakers who play a vital role in looking after their community animals and refilling the bowls regularly.

Along with the NGOs, the veterinary department of the GHMC is also taking measures by placing around 4,900 water bowls across the city.

The corporation is laying special emphasis on care for stray dogs, as lack of food and water in summer often ends up in agitated canine attacks. Every summer, the number of rescue calls also goes up as several dogs are found with their heads stuck in plastic containers in search of food and water.

As the mercury climbs, collective efforts are imperative to safeguard the well-being of these voiceless beings.

“During heat waves, animals are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and even fatalities and hence it’s important to prioritize their well-being. Simple gestures like providing access to shade, ample water, and ventilation can help animals stay cool. By taking proactive measures, we not only embrace compassion but also play a crucial role in preventing unnecessary suffering and loss of life,”-said Jaihari A K, Coordinator for Disaster Preparedness, Response and Relief, Humane Society.

Do’s:

– Provide access to shade and water

– Check their other water sources regularly to make sure they are not empty or contaminated

– Feed during cooler times of the day

– Watch for signs of heat exhaustion like excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy

– Carefully douse them in cool water now and then

Don’ts:

– Do not leave them in closed spaces

– Over-exercise animals during hot weather

– Allow animals to walk on the hot pavement as it can burn their paws

– Do not provide feed that can heat up quickly as it can cause fermentation and lead to further heat generation in the stomach

PM Modi trying to do match-fixing in polls, BJP will change Constitution if it wins: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to do “match-fixing” in the Lok Sabha polls and asserted that if the BJP wins the election through this endeavour and changes the Constitution, then the whole country would be “finished”.

Addressing the INDIA bloc’s ‘Save Democracy’ rally at the Ramlila Maidan here, the former Congress chief said this is not an ordinary election but one to save the country’s democracy and Constitution.

“When pressure is put on umpires and captain, players are bought off and the match is won, in cricket, it is called match-fixing. We have Lok Sabha polls before us. Who selected the umpires? Before the match started, two players were arrested… Narendra Modi is trying to do match-fixing in these polls,” Gandhi said.

The BJP is raising the slogan of getting 400 seats, but without EVMs, “match-fixing”, pressuring media and buying them, they will not be able to reach even 180 seats, he claimed.

Gandhi said the Congress is the biggest opposition party and all its accounts have been frozen at a time the party has to run a campaign and send leaders in states amidst the Lok Sabha polls.

“What kind of elections are these…governments are made to fall by using money power, leaders are threatened and arrested, Soren ji and Kejriwal ji are arrested,” Gandhi alleged, adding that “match-fixing is being done by PM Modi along with three-four billionaires”.

This is being done to “snatch” the Constitution from the poor, he said.

The Constitution is the voice of the people and the day “it is finished, this country will be finished”, he asserted, adding if the Constitution goes, the rights of the poor and reservation will also go.

The country cannot be run by threats and police, and the Constitution is its heartbeat, he said.

If the Constitution is finished this country will be torn apart into different states, he said, adding that this is the BJP’s objective.

“They think the country can be run with the threats and intimidation of police, CBI and ED… You can buy media and suppress them but you cannot suppress the voice of India. No force in this world can suppress voice of people,” the former Congress chief said.

“A BJP MP said ‘we will change the Constitution when we get over 400 seats’. It was not said just like that, it was to test the idea,” Gandhi said, referring to Anantkumar Hegde’s remark about amending the Constitution.

Gandhi said this fight is to save the Constitution.

“If the Constitution goes, the rights of the poor will go and reservation will also go…the wealth of the poor, farmers and labourers will go into the hands of five-six people,” Gandhi alleged.

“Tell me who benefitted from the GST. There is the highest unemployment today in the last 40 years. One per cent people have the entire wealth of the country. There are 22 people who have the same wealth as 70 crore people,” he said.

The BJP wants to change the Constitution to take away the wealth of the people, he alleged.

“I have talked about caste census, employment to youth, MSP to farmers…these are the biggest issues before the country. But, if you do not vote with full force, their match-fixing will succeed. The day match-fixing succeeds, our Constitution will be finished.

“The day our Constitution is finished, it will be a big blow to the heart of India. This election is not an ordinary election. This election is a fight to save the Constitution, the country and saving the rights of the poor, backwards and tribals,” Gandhi said.

He said the entire country is watching this “match-fixing” in the election.

It was Prime Minister Modi who appointed the Election Commission, put two chief ministers behind bars merely one or two months ahead of elections and “froze our bank accounts”, Gandhi said.

“They want to make the opposition unable to fight elections. That is why they froze bank accounts, appointed their own people in the election commission, are putting pressure on the judiciary because they want to fix the match,” he alleged.

The Congress leader claimed that if the BJP wins the election through “match-fixing” and changes the Constitution, then the country would be “set ablaze” and it would not survive.

In a show of opposition unity ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, INDIA bloc leaders came together at a ‘Loktantra Bachao’ rally at the Ramlila ground here on Sunday against the backdrop of Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal’s arrest.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, CPI general secretary D Raja, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah, and Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren, among others, attended the rally.

Poor management of Mission Bhagiratha aggravates woes of tribals in Adilabad

Adilabad: Management of the Mission Bhagiratha scheme has been left to the wind in several interior parts of the district, pushing tribals dwelling in remote parts of the region into a drinking water crisis.

The Mission Bhagiratha scheme, introduced by the previous BRS government, had brought unprecedented relief to the tribals residing in remote and hilly terrains, who were facing hardships for water in summer till a few years ago.

However, the initiative is now not being managed properly in interior villages due to lack of supervision by officials and crunch of funds in maintenance of the scheme. Due to lack of supply of drinking water through the scheme to interior villages, the tribal population is forced to trek for long distances to fetch water.

In particular, the tribals are depending on the water in wells, bore-wells and streams to overcome the drinking water crisis. They are left with no option but to consume the unprotected water drawn from these sources, risking their health.

“Residents are relying on a single bore well due to lack of water supply through the ambitious Mission Bhagiratha scheme for the last few weeks. They are walking for long distances to reach the well and waiting for at least 30 minutes to get their turn to extract the water,” Sidam Devushah, a resident of Darloddi in Adilabad Rural mandal said, requesting officials to take steps to address the crisis.

Residents of Loharam, another tribal settlement in Adilabad Rural mandal, are fetching water in large drums from wells using bullock carts when they could not get water through the scheme even after repeated pleas made with the officials to address the issue.

When contacted, officials of the Rural Water Supply department said water was being provided to 1,234 habitations across the district through the Mission Bhagiratha scheme. A grid pipeline measuring 1,990 km and 1,761 km intra pipeline were laid as part of the initiative.

Efforts are being made to address the drinking water crisis being arisen in tribal habitations, they said.

India still paying for misdoings of Congress govt: PM Modi at Meerut

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the public meeting ahead of Lok Sabha elections, in Meerut on Sunday.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hit out at the grand old party, on Sunday, claiming that the country is ‘still paying for the misdoings’ of the previous Congress government.

While addressing a mega rally at Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut on Sunday, PM Modi said, “Today another anti-national act of Congress has come before the country.

The island of Katchatheevu, which lies between India and Sri Lanka and is extremely important from the perspective of national security, was given away by Congress after independence.” “When the country became independent, we had this island, but 4-5 decades ago, Congress cut off a part of India and separated it. India is still paying for the misdoings of the Congress government,” he added.

Katchatheevu is an island in Tamil Nadu, off the coast of India, between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. PM Modi also slammed the opposition coalition, INDIA bloc saying, “We started the fight against corruption. They formed the INDIA bloc thinking Modi will feel intimidated. But India is my family, and I have nothing to fear.”

He further affirmed to take action against those who were indulged in corruption, adding that those who have ‘looted the nation will have to return it’. “On one side, you have the NDA, committed to eradicating corruption. On the other, you have the INDI Alliance, focused on protecting corrupt leaders. No matter how many attacks you make on Modi, I won’t stop fighting against corruption. No matter how big the corrupt person is, action will definitely be taken. The one who has looted the country will have to give it back. This is Modi’s guarantee,” he said. “Now those have been indulged in corruption are behind the bars. They don’t get relief even in the Supreme Court,” the Prime Minister added.

The Prime Minister further asserted that the preparations for the government’s third term have already started.

PM Modi, “Our government has already started preparations for the third term. We are making a roadmap for the coming five years. Work is going on rapidly on what major decisions we have to take in the first 100 days.” “In the last 10 years, you have seen only the trailer of development, now we have to take the country much further,” he added. “The 2024 election is not just an election to form the government. The election of 2024 is for making a developed India. The 2024 mandate will make India the world’s third largest economic superpower,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi highlighted the progress achieved by the nation in the past 10 years and said that ‘India’s time has come, India has started.’ “Today, modern infrastructure is being built rapidly in India. India is making unprecedented investment in building infrastructure. New opportunities are being created for the youth. India’s credibility is at new heights, the whole world is looking at India with awe,” he said.

He further said that many initiatives were undertaken by the government towards empowering the poor. “Modi reached here today after fighting the dark days of poverty and that is why Modi understands the sorrow, pain and suffering of every poor. So I made schemes to address every concern of the poor. We have not only empowered the poor, but we have also given them their self-respect,” the Prime Minister said.

Emphasising the ‘Nari Shakti’, PM Modi said, “We made our women entrepreneurs. They are running their own businesses. 10 crore women are now part of the Self-Help groups. This was Modi’s dream and it is Modi’s guarantee that 3 crore women will be made lakhpati didis and we are working towards it. This is modi’s guarantee.” The Prime Minister expressed his resolve to completely eradicate poverty as the nation moves towards becoming the third largest economy.

“I want to remind you all that when India was the 11th largest economy in the world, the poverty rates in India were soaring. When India became the fifth largest economy, over 25 crore people successfully came out of poverty. I guarantee you, when we become the third largest economy, not only will poverty be eradicated, but a ‘new middle class’ will fuel India’s growth,” he said.

The election for 543 Lok Sabha seats in the country will be held in seven phases starting April 19.

Elon Musk: Odessa will fall if Ukraine war lasts long enough

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has predicted that Russia will gain more territory the longer the Ukraine war goes on, warning that a protracted war will lead to the fall of Odessa as well.

“The longer the war goes on, the more territory Russia will gain until they hit the Dnepr, which is tough to overcome,” Musk wrote in a post on his X platform on Saturday.

“However, if the war lasts long enough, Odessa will fall too.”

The renowned entrepreneur also said that it was a “tragic waste of life” for Ukraine to attack a larger army that had defense in depth, minefields and stronger artillery when Ukraine lacked armor or air superiority.

“Any fool could have predicted that,” he asserted.

According to Musk, whether Ukraine loses all access to the Black Sea or not is the real remaining question.

He added, “I recommend a negotiated settlement before that happens.”

Musk had previously called on the United States to halt its provision of weapons to Ukraine, raising doubts about the possibility of Moscow’s defeat.

More than a year ago, he advised Kiev to abandon its territorial claim on Crimea, declare neutrality, and enable the four recently established Russian regions – Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye – to conduct fresh referendums on joining the Russian Federation.

The proposal mirrored the conditions presented by Russia to Kiev and Western nations before the outbreak of the conflict, with the exception that Moscow had initially proposed autonomy solely for Donetsk and Lugansk.

Moscow has restated its openness to engaging in constructive discussions with Kiev, placing responsibility on the Ukrainian government for impeding progress by ignoring the facts.

Russia launched what it calls “a special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, over the perceived threat of the ex-Soviet republic joining US-led NATO.

Since then, the United States and Ukraine’s other allies have sent Kiev tens of billions of dollars worth of weapons, including rocket systems, drones, armored vehicles, tanks, and communication systems.

Western countries have also imposed a slew of economic sanctions on Moscow. The Kremlin has said the sanctions and the Western military assistance will only prolong the war.

Watch: Comedy Of Errors As 3 Bangladesh Fielders Fail To Take Easy Catch

There was.a comedy of errors on Day 2 of the second Test match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka where three fielders were unable to complete a catch to dismiss Prabath Jayasuriya. It was a lucky break for the batter as the ball flew off his bat’s outside edge but despite multiple attempts, the slip fielders were not complete to take the catch. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto at 1st slip, Shahadat Hossain Dipu at 2nd slip and Zakir Hasan at 3rd slip all had a chance to complete the catch but ended up squandering it.

Sri Lanka made a record 531 runs in their first innings against Bangladesh Sunday, but Kamindu Mendis narrowly missed the feat of a third Test century in consecutive innings.

Sri Lanka’s total, on the second day of the second Test in Chittagong, was the highest scored in Tests without any batsman scoring a century.

Mendis was 92 not out when last man Asitha Fernando was run out for a duck, leaving him eight short of what would have made him only the fourth Sri Lankan to score three centuries in consecutive innings.

Mendis, who scored 102 and 164 in the first Test, struck Taijul Islam for two sixes in an over to come close to the feat.

But Fernando fell short of his crease in a desperate attempt to change the strike.

Apart from Mendis, who was playing only his third Test, Dhananjaya de Silva (70), Dinesh Chandimal (59), Kusal Mendis (93), Dimuth Karunaratne (86) and Nishan Madhushka (57) also scored a fifty each.

Shakib Al Hasan finished with 3-110 as Sri Lanka made Bangladesh toil for nearly two days after electing to bat first. Sri Lanka resumed the second day with 314-4.

De Silva, like Mendis, who also scored 102 and 108 in the first Test, raised the prospect of scoring 300 on the trot before he was dismissed in the post-lunch session.

Chandimal was the only batsman to be dismissed in the first session, edging Shakib behind the stumps after making 59 runs.

Khaled Ahmed trapped De Silva leg before in the first over after the lunch break.

Khaled could have taken another wicket in his next if Prabath Jayasuriya was not comically dropped by three slip fielders on six.

Mendis was declared caught behind on 35 off Mehidy Hasan Miraz, but the decision was reversed after review.

Shakib hit Jayasuriya plumb in front to end his 65-run seventh wicket stand with Mendis, who was dropped by Hasan Mahmud on 60 at deep square leg.

Sri Lanka won the first Test in Sylhet by 328 runs.
