PM To Chair BJP's Top Poll Body Meet, Pick Candidates For Over 50% Seats

PM To Chair BJP's Top Poll Body Meet, Pick Candidates For Over 50% Seats

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend a meeting of the BJP’s top decision-making body at the party headquarters shortly, to take a call on the first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha election. Sources indicated that it is likely that the party will announce a chunk of candidates before the election dates are announced — a move that is expected to bring pressure on the Opposition INDIA bloc, which is still making its way through the seat sharing process.

Sources said PM Modi, the party’s chief strategist Amit Shah, party chief JP Nadda and senior leaders including Rajnath Singh will be part of the meeting to focus on lists drawn up by the 550-plus members   of the Central Election Committee. The leaders are on way to the meet after a mega meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence.

Senior leaders Devendra Fanavis, Prakash Javadekar, Mansukhbhai Mandaviya, Pushkar Dhami, Pramod Sawant, Bhupendra Yadav, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Keshav Maurya, Yogi Adityanath and others have already reached the venue.

Sources said the meet will focus on the names of the candidates for the Lok Sabha seats of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Telangana, Rajasthan, Goa, Gujarat and other states.

A decision on candidates for the states of Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu has been put on hold. Alliance discussions are in progress in all three states — with Akali Dal in Punjab, Telugu Desam Party and Jana Sena in Andhra Pradesh and the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, sources said.

Shortlists that name the top three candidates for each seat have been drawn up and the BJP is hoping to announce candidates for 300 seats ahead of March 10.

This was the game plan during the last general election in 2019 also, when the BJP had announced 164 candidates on March 21, weeks before the elections were announced.

The lists, sources said, follows what the party called a “visibility survey”.

The Congress meanwhile, is hoping to wrap up the seat sharing process in Maharashtra as soon as possible. Leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi are expected to meet in Mumbai this evening.

The BJP is expecting the first-off-the-block strategy will put psychological pressure on the Congress as well as portray their ‘ineptitude” before the voters, sources said.

Railway unions threaten to stop all trains from May 1 if old pension scheme not implemented

New Delhi: Several unions of railway employees and workers, who have come together under the Joint Forum For Restoration of Old Pension Scheme (JFROPS), have threatened to stop all train services across the country from May 1 if their demand to implement the Old Pension Scheme is not met.

“The government is completely non-committal to our demand for the restoration of ‘Defined Guarantied Old Pension Scheme’ in place of ‘New Pension Scheme‘.

Now, there is no alternative left but to resort to direct action,” Shiv Gopal Mishra, Convener of JFROPS, said.

Mishra, who is also General Secretary of All India Railwaymen’s Federation, added, “Representatives of various federations under JFROPS have jointly consented that we will officially serve a notice to the Railway Ministry on March 19, informing them about the proposed countrywide strike and disruption of all train services from May 1, 2024 i.e. on International Labour Day.”

According to Mishra, several unions of other government employees, who are also part of JFROPS, will also go on strike along with railway workers. A press note issued by JFROPS said, “All the constituent organisations are therefore requested to take appropriate action and to make all sorts of preparations for serving upon the strike notice to their respective Administrations in a befitting manner.”

Mishra said that while the OPS was in the interest of workers, the New Pension Scheme doesn’t take care of their employees’ welfare.

BRS to counter Congress misinformation campaign with ‘Chalo Medigadda’

Led by party working president KT Rama Rao, around 150 senior BRS leaders are expected to visit the Medigadda barrage

BRS to counter Congress misinformation campaign with ‘Chalo Medigadda’

Hyderabad: In a strategic move to combat the misinformation campaign by the Congress government regarding the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS), the opposition BRS is all set to embark on its ‘Chalo Medigadda’ programme on Friday. Led by party working president KT Rama Rao, around 150 senior BRS leaders are expected to visit the Medigadda barrage.

Departing from the party headquarters at Telangana Bhavan in Hyderabad, the BRS team will tour Medigadda, where former Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao will give a presentation on the project’s key features and its impact on the State. Later, they are also planning to visit the Annaram and Sundilla barrages and other reservoirs.

For over two months now, politics in the State has been revolving around the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation project with both the ruling Congress and the main opposition BRS trading charges. While the Congress has been trying to project Kaleshwaram as evidence for the corruption during the BRS regime, the latter is terming this a misinformation campaign only to delay repair works and to turn the entire project redundant so that the Congress can gain some political mileage ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

The BRS decided to visit the Medigadda barrage in response to the recent visit of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Ministers and other Congress legislators to the barrage on February 13. The Congress leaders also alleged that the previous BRS government spent Rs.94,000 crore to irrigate only 98,000 acres of new ayacut. However, BRS working president KT Rama Rao invited the Ministers and other Congress leaders to join the ‘Chalo Medigadda’ programme to verify the facts.

The BRS plans to explain the project’s benefits and expose the Congress party’s conspiracies to turn the entire KLIS into a non-performing asset by deliberately delaying necessary repair works at Medigadda and other locations. The main opposition party leadership repeatedly dismissed the Congress’s claims of potential destruction of the entire project, stating that the engineering solutions for repairing damaged barrages are available.

Though the BRS demanded in the Assembly for action against those responsible for damages and to conduct a probe into the project’s construction, there has been no formidable action from the State government so far.

The BRS also cautioned the State government against playing with farmers’ lives by postponing repairs and alleged that the Congress was conspiring to let the three barrages – Medigadda, Annaram, and Sundilla – be washed away in the upcoming rainy season. The ‘Chalo Medigadda’ programme aims to present a comprehensive counter-narrative to the Congress’s assertions, shedding light on the Kaleshwaram project’s positive impact on the region.

Higher-than-expected GDP may lead to tight monetary policy from RBI for a longer period-Telangana Today

The second advance estimates of GDP for FY24 released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) has indeed sprung a major surprise in the markets.

Higher-than-expected GDP may lead to tight monetary policy from RBI for a longer period

New Delhi: The higher-than-expected momentum in the economy may lead to a tight monetary policy from the RBI for a longer period, and any reversal in the current stance is unlikely over the next six months, said Suman Chowdhury, Chief Economist and Head of Research at Acuite Ratings.

The second advance estimates of GDP for FY24 released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) has indeed sprung a major surprise in the markets. The GDP growth for Q3FY24 is pegged sharply higher at 8.4 per cent, as compared to the consensus estimate of 6.6 per cent, Chowdhury said.

“Further, the GDP estimates for the current year has been further revised to 7.6 per cent, which is again significantly higher than our forecasts of 6.8 per cent. One of the key reasons for the material shift in the GDP print is the revisions in the GDP data for some quarters of the previous fiscal,” Chowdhury said.

“What is noteworthy is the significant differential between GVA (6.5 per cent) and GDP (8.4 per cent) growth in the third quarter,” Chowdhury said.

The manufacturing sector has grown by 11.6 per cent YoY in Q3FY24, which may be partly due to higher operating margins driven by lower raw material costs.

Expectedly, the services sector has seen a significant uptick, but the agricultural sector has seen a modest contraction of 0.8 per cent during the quarter. Importantly, private consumption growth has been sluggish at 3.6 per cent and in the context of high GDP growth, it remains an area of concern, Chowdhury added. –

"World Wont See Excess Of Labour Anytime Soon": Bill Gates On AI

Mr Gates said he would like to see an increase in the duration of protection afforded by vaccines.

New Delhi:

As one of the world’s richest men who has worked at the intersection of technology and philanthropy, Bill Gates possesses a unique worldview that he brings to bear on trying to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV on Thursday, the founder of Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation spoke on a wide range of issues, from India’s leadership in digital infrastructure and the country’s “brilliant work” in the field of vaccines to artificial intelligence and the cup of tea he had in Hyderabad, which was prepared by social media sensation Dolly Chaiwala.

On India’s digital economy and its contribution to the country’s growth story, Mr Gates said transferring government payments directly to bank accounts is a big step as beneficiaries get money directly, without intermediaries taking any of it away. It has also brought significant savings for the government, which can be used in other areas.

“For example, I saw in Odisha where they (the government) had registered the farmers and they understood their land and their crops. So they are sending them a regular bulletin and they are communicating about what (farmers) need to do. So this is a case where India has been out in the lead, you know, India did this thing at scale. They made it work,” the Microsoft founder said.

“So, right now, there are 15 other countries at various stages of adoption. A lot of that was kicked off by the way Prime Minister Narendra Modi made that a centrepiece of the G20 meeting,” he added.

Increasing Vaccine Duration

Emphasising that the Gates Foundation is the “biggest supporter” of the Indian vaccine industry, Mr Gates said the country’s companies played a key role in developing vaccines during the pandemic.

“All of them put their brilliant work into trying to help out with Covid and the majority of vaccines got made here in India. We have a lot of new things we want in vaccines, we want (vaccines for) tuberculosis, HIV. We are working with these companies to help them adopt mRNA, which is a technology that we think will be very useful. And so the fact that they are very high quality (and) when they get volume, they are very low cost, they are a treasure to the world,” the technologist said.

Mr Gates said he would like to see the duration of protection afforded by vaccines, including the one for Covid, to increase so that the same features can be used for other diseases.

“We also need those same features, particularly duration, to use it for measles, tuberculosis and HIV. And a lot of this mRNA work is going for cancer vaccines… so the technology has a lot of promise. If we ever have a future pandemic, the ability to adapt is much more rapid,” he asserted.

Job Loss Fears?

To a question on fears of job loss because of the quantum leap in artificial intelligence, the Microsoft founder said the world is not going to see an excess of labour anytime soon and increasing productivity could lead to a broader group being able to access things like their children getting individual tutoring, which is only affordable to a select few now.

“The world has more jobs today than it had 100 years ago, when you had to toil in a backbreaking way just to barely get enough to eat. 80% of people were farmers… So the advances have made our lives a lot richer. We have reduced the work week, but that hasn’t been the primary thing. Primarily, the food we are offered, the entertainment… you know, it is just way richer than what our previous generations could even dream up,” he said.

On sentience and whether the world is getting to a stage when AI systems are essentially acting as human beings, Mr Gates said significant strides have been made in the sector, especially in the past two years, but machines have a different approach from humans.

“Computers have always been superhuman at things like calculations, and we have reached milestones like when a computer was the best at chess, or when the computer was the best at Go (a board game). Now, if you had a contest to write poems or composes songs, the computer would be (at), you know, 99% of humans. And so that threshold of where it adds value and what it can do keeps going up,” he said.

“And that can be a good thing. It is clearly different than we are, it makes different mistakes than we tend to make,” he pointed out.

Anaemia Breakthrough

On India’s disease burden, the philanthropist said anaemia and malnutrition are two of the Gates Foundation’s top priorities for the world and the country is also facing a challenge in that area. He added, however, that India is also prioritising these issues and there have been some breakthroughs.

“For anaemia, we have always known that a woman would come in a lot of times during pregnancy and get an infusion. We could help get rid of that anaemia, but it is too expensive and too complex. The recent breakthrough is that there’s a formulation that a woman could come in only one time, and then we are using AI to help place the needle,” he said.

Striking an optimistic note, Mr Gates said, “We are working with Indian partners to get the price of that one infusion down below $10 (approximately 800 rupees). And it appears the benefit to the mother… her mental state is dramatically better. And the brain development of the baby is also quite a bit better. Anaemia has to be reduced dramatically and this has great promise.”

Climate Crisis

Mr Gates said he is involved in both mitigation of the climate crisis as well as helping countries adapt, the latter of which is done by the Gates Foundation. Mitigation, he said, is done through things like coming up with new crops that can withstand higher temperatures and droughts.

Pointing to the outsized role of developed countries in climate change, he said, “India is a very climate-affected country. It is kind of funny, in a way… the temperate zone countries that are the most responsible for the problem are not the most affected, because the absolute temperatures are not so high. And, you know, we have air conditioners, in our cars and in our homes, so we are somewhat already adapted.”

He pointed out that good practices are being adopted in other countries, including India, that are showing that preparedness can make regions resilient to the effects of climate change.

‘Fantastic Chai’

On a lighter note, Mr Gates was also asked about the tea he had, made by Dolly Chaiwala, and how it tasted.

“Well, I don’t consider myself the best judge of it, but it was fantastic. It was a beautiful view of Hyderabad in the morning and they told me they had brought a great teawallah guy in, and he was very photogenic, so that was fun,” the billionaire said.

Hyderabad: Demanding that State government constitute an expert committee on Medigadda and initiate rectification measures, BRS working president KT Rama Rao said if there were any lapses in the project, the Congress government was free to take action.

Farmers were already facing a water crisis and officials had declared that water could not be provided after March 31. There were still four months for the monsoon to arrive and delaying repairs further would cast an adverse impact, he said, adding that this was “criminal negligence and cruel politics”.

Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, the BRS working president came down heavily on the NDSA report. Never in history had the NDSA submitted a report in just two days. The NDSA’s Medigadda report was politically motivated and cooked up with no soil samples collected nor any hydrology tests conducted, he said.

On the charges that BRS government did not cooperate with the NDSA, he replied that during elections, the entire administration was under the Election Commission’s control. The NDSA team could have complained to the EC but it did not, he said.

Referring to Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy’s comments citing NDSA report, the BRS working president wondered how the Congress government was welcoming a central agency probe. “In that case, they should also welcome CBI and ED probes in different issues,” Rama Rao said.

Regarding the Congress party’s reported plans to visit Palamuru Ranga Reddy Lift Irrigation scheme on Friday, the BRS working president said the BRS government had completed 80 percent of the work on the project. Already, one pump house was operated and reservoirs were constructed.

The Congress government should expedite construction of canals to supply water, he said appealing that political upmanship should be set aside and people’s welfare should be accorded top priority.

BRS leaders and elected public representatives would visit Medigadda and Annaram barrages on Friday. After inspecting the Medigadda barrage, a presentation would be made at Annaram barrage. A team of experts are also inspecting the barrages independently and could submit its report to the State government, he said.

“The sinking of pillars at Medigadda is not a first of its kind incident and there were issues at Kadem, Nagarjuna Sagar while Musi flood gates were washed away in the past,” Rama Rao said. However, for the last 83 days, the Congress government, but for accusing the previous government and releasing white papers, had not taken up any rectification measures at Medigadda.

President: Iran’s armed forces reliable sources of security in region

President Raeisi meets with a group of Air Force commanders in Tehran on Feb. 29, 2024.

President Ebrahim Raeisi says the armed forces of the Islamic Republic have become reliable and trustworthy forces in providing security for Iran and the countries of the region.

This credibility is due to the power of faith and connection to the divine absolute power among the Iranian forces, President Raeisi said in a meeting with a group of Air Force commanders.

The president touched on the unique features of the armed forces of the Islamic Republic, saying their strength, capability and bravery has empowered the country and stabilized national security.

President Raeisi touched on the evolution and transformation that the Islamic Revolution created in the hearts and souls of the officers and commanders of the Iranian armed forces.

This transformation, the president said, became evident during the Holy Defense of the 1980s against Iraq, the defense of the country’s borders, and the support of the forces defending holy shrines.

President Raeisi talks to Air Force chief Brigadier General Hamid Vahedi during a meeting in Tehran on Thursday.

He cited belief in God and people, and their self-belief among the principles and hallmarks of the armed forces of the Islamic Republic, especially the Air Force.

He called the self-sufficiency of the Air Force in building up-to-date and advanced defensive and offensive equipment such as radar, drone and missile systems as a manifestation of the force’s self-belief.

The president reiterated the government’s commitment to providing resources needed to strengthen the country’s defense base, saying effort to this end is an investment for security and creating deterrence against the enemy.

Raeisi hailed “good” steps taken by the Air Force to develop combat and military equipment and capabilities by using the capacity of technological and knowledge-based companies.

He advised military commanders to continue improving equipment and upgrading the knowledge and expertise of their forces.
