'Spoiled Son': Kiren Rijiju Attacks Hemant Soren For 'Looting Money'

New Delhi:

In a sharp response to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Hemant Soren, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju called him a “spolied child” and said if Hemant Soren hails from a tribal community, this does not give him a licence to loot public money.

“I am a tribal from a more backward area. I find your comment funny. If Shibu Soren ji says this dialogue, then I can accept it, but this dialogue does not suit a spoiled son. Anyway, tribals do not have the licence to loot public money,” wrote Rijiju in a post on ‘X’.

His comment came in response to Hemant Soren’s post on X, saying that he was not afraid and would not accept defeat.

“It’s a break, life is a great battle. I have fought every moment, and I will fight every moment. But I will not beg for compromise. Either in defeat or in victory, I am not afraid. I will not give up in vain. I will not accept defeat,” Soren wrote on X.

Hours after handing over his resignation to the Governor, CP Radhakrishnan, at Raj Bhawan, Hemant Soren was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in the land scam case on Wednesday night, sources confirmed.

Notably, Hemant Soren’s loyalist Champai Soren, who is the state transport minister, will step into his role as the Chief Minister.

US-India Drone Deal Holds "Significant Potential": White House

US-India Drone Deal Holds 'Significant Potential': White House

Washington:

The US State Department expressed optimism about the proposed drone deal with India, emphasising its “significant potential” to advance strategic technology cooperation.

The deal was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit last year, marking substantial growth in the US-India defence partnership over the past decade.

Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the US State Department, highlighted the importance of the deal in furthering strategic technology cooperation with India and enhancing military collaboration in the region.

While addressing the media, Miller said, “So I’ll say that generally, the US-India Defence Partnership has seen significant growth over the past decade. This is a proposed sale that was announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit last year.”

“We believe it offers significant potential to further advance strategic technology cooperation with India and military cooperation in the region,” he added.

He also acknowledged the crucial role of Congress in the arms transfer process, emphasising routine consultations with members of Congress on foreign affairs committees before formal notifications.

“Of course, Congress plays an important role in the US arms transfer process. We routinely consult with members of Congress on the foreign affairs committees before our formal notification so we can address questions that they might have. But I don’t have any comment on when that formal notification might take place,” Miller also said.

The proposed drone deal is part of the broader efforts to strengthen defence ties between the United States and India.

In June 2023, US President Joe Biden and PM Modi welcomed India’s plans to procure Predator drones made by General Atomics, a mega pact that will allow American Navy ships to undertake major repairs at Indian shipyards.

President Biden and PM Modi welcomed India’s plans to procure General Atomics MQ-9B HALE UAVs. The MQ-9Bs, assembled in India, will enhance the ISR capabilities of India’s armed forces across domains. As part of this plan, General Atomics will also establish a comprehensive global MRO facility in India, according to the US-India joint statement.

The agreement would strengthen India’s national security and surveillance capabilities, extending beyond the Indian Ocean and encompassing the border region with China.

India shares vast maritime and land boundaries with two major adversaries–Pakistan and China–and requires constant monitoring of their activities to safeguard its national security interests.

The Quad grouping of countries – the United States, India, Australia and Japan – all operate, or have operated, the MQ-9B SeaGuardian. Currently, India is leasing MQ-9Bs as part of an intelligence-gathering operation.

The Predators, also called the MQ-9 Reaper, can fly up to 36 hours at a stretch and can be used for focused monitoring of any specific point or area of interest.

As many as 31 Predator drones, to be acquired by India from the US soon, would be operated by the tri-services jointly.

President Biden and Prime Minister Modi also hailed the landmark signing of an MoU between General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for the manufacture of GE F-414 jet engines in India, for the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Light Combat Aircraft Mk 2, added the statement.

Hemant Soren Arrested, Champai Soren To Take Over As Chief Minister

New Delhi:

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate this evening, minutes after quitting the post. Transport minister Champai Soren, one of the veteran leaders of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, will step into his shoes. Later in the evening, Mr Soren was formally arrested after being taken to the ED office.

Hemant Soren was taken into custody in connection with an alleged land scam, minutes after meeting the governor and handing in his resignation.

Sources said he had discussed the matter with the officials, declaring that he would sign the arrest memo only after stepping down. The ED Officials then took him to meet the Governor. A Chief Minister can be arrested under the anti-money laundering rules if he evades summons thrice.

Mr Soren, after evading the Enforcement Directorate over the weekend, had agreed to be questioned by the Central agency this afternoon. His statement was recorded during the questioning.

Shortly after his arrest, Mr Soren posted some Hindi verses on X, formerly Twitter. Their rough translation read:

“it’s a break
life is a great battle
I have fought every moment, I will fight every moment
But I will not beg for compromise

What in defeat, what in victory
I am not afraid at all
smallness don’t touch me now
you are great, keep it up

the pain of the hearts of our people
I will not give up in vain
I will not accept defeat…

Jai Jharkhand!”

The former Chief Minister, who had evaded seven summons for questioning in an alleged money laundering case linked to the Rs 600 crore land scam, was anticipating arrest for a while.  Yesterday, he held a meeting with MLAs of the ruling alliance where the question of his successor was discussed.

Initially, it was expected to be his wife, Kalpana Soren. But given the proximity of the state elections — due in November — the party had to drop the idea.

By-elections cannot be held in the last year of any state assembly’s term and so, Kalpana Soren could not have been elected an MLA even if she was named the Chief Minister.

The land scam involves a “huge racket” to change of ownership of government land and selling it to builders, the agency has alleged. So far, 14 people have been  arrested in the case, including 2011-batch IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan who served as the director of the state Social Welfare Department and deputy commissioner of Ranchi.

Mr Soren has claimed that he is the target of a huge conspiracy.
“The BJP conspiracy against him has succeeded for a while. But our government has majority and will continue,” said state minster Mithilesh Thakur.

England Star Injured, Shoaib Bashir Likely To Make Debut After Visa Row

England spinner Shoaib Bashir could make his Test debut

Young England spinner couldn’t be a part of the team for the first Test against India in Hyderabad, owing to a visa problem. After the United Kingdom government intervened, Bashir’s visa problem was cleared, paving the way for the young spinner to fly to India. Though England won the opening Test impressively, Bashir could be all set for his Test debut in the second Test of the series at Vizag. An injury to England spinner Jack Leach has made his participation in the second Test a doubt, making Bashir the biggest candidate to replace him.

England batter Zak Crawley confirmed that Leach is looking to prove his fitness in time for the second Test but it isn’t yet 100 percent known whether he will be able to make it to the playing XI or not.

“He’s a great kid,” said Crawley on BBC. “He’s got a lot about him. He knows what he is trying to do with his bowling and he backs himself. I like that and feel like if he got his chance in this series he would go well.”

Speaking of Bshir, Crawley had plenty of praise for the youngster, backing him to do well if selected in the team.

“He’s a great kid,” said Crawley. “He’s got a lot about him. He knows what he is trying to do with his bowling and he backs himself. I like that and feel like if he got his chance in this series he would go well.”

Bashir was in contention for selection in the first Test as well but the visa problem saw him fail to be available for selection. England coach Brendon McCullum has already confirmed that he is contemplating playing 4 spinners in the second Test at Vizag.

After India’s loss in the series opener, the focus will be on the Visakhapatnam pitch which is expected to offer plenty of turn to spinners. If not from Day 1, the pitch is definitely going to spin a lot from Day 2.

Israel's Netanyahu Says UN Aid Agency "Totally Infiltrated" By Hamas

Israel's Netanyahu Says UN Aid Agency 'Totally Infiltrated' By Hamas

Jerusalem:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that the UN agency for Palestinian refugees had been “totally infiltrated” by Hamas, after several countries suspended funding over Israeli claims 12 UNRWA staffers participated in the October 7 attack.

“UNRWA is totally infiltrated with Hamas,” Netanyahu told a meeting of UN ambassadors in Jerusalem, adding that “we need to get other UN agencies and other aid agencies replacing UNRWA”.

Netanyahu’s comments came as UNRWA said it is “extremely important” to conduct an independent investigation into Israeli allegations that 12 of its employees were involved in the October 7 Hamas attack against Israel.

Following these allegations important donors — among them Britain, Germany, Japan and the United States — have announced their suspension of aid to UNRWA.

“It (UNRWA) has been in the service of Hamas, in its schools and many other things,” Netanyahu said at the meeting, video footage of which was released by the government press office.

“I say this with great regret because we hoped that there would be an objective and constructive body to offer aid. We need such a body today in Gaza, but UNRWA is not that body.”
