Bagheri raps US for hypocrisy in countering terrorism

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Bagheri Kani met with the head of the Executive Committee of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)’s Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure Ruslan Mirzayev in Uzbekistan’s capital Tashkent, a report by the Iranian foreign ministry’s website said.

During the meeting, they discussed and exchanged views about ways for effective and efficient interaction.

He added, “At a time when the US unilateralism has failed to establish peace in the world, the only way for human beings is multilateralism, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has proven effective in confronting terrorism.”

Bagheri noted that drawing a line between “good and bad terrorism” by the US based on Washington’s interests causes insecurity in the world.

Meanwhile, Mirzayev described the three ominous phenomena of terrorism, extremism and separatism as ‘the biggest threats to the world.’

He further said, “The SCO is the only organization that is operationally fighting terrorism.”

Mirzayev termed Iran’s experience in fighting the scourge as valuable and stressed on the importance of exchanging views and cooperation.

SC asks Gyanvapi Mosque committee to approach Allahabad HC against order to allow puja

Gyanvapi Mosque

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Masjid Intezamia Committee of Gyanwapi mosque of Varanasi to approach Allahabad High Court against the Varanasi District Court’s order which allowed Hindus to perform prayers of deities inside the southern celler of Gyanvapi mosque.

Lawyers representing the Masjid Committee moved the Supreme Court Registrar requesting for urgent hearing of its application seeking status quo at the mosque site.

The lawyers said the Registrar conveyed to them that Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had asked them to approach the High Court.

The Mosque committee filed an urgent application seeking status quo at the mosque site contending that the administration was acting in ‘hot haste’ soon after the Varanasi Court’s order to perform the “Puja” at night.

The application said that these actions, occurring in the middle of the night, aimed to preempt any legal challenge by the mosque managing committee.

On January 31, the Varanasi district court allowed the Hindu side to offer prayers in the southern cellar of Gyanvapi mosque. The court directed the Varanasi district magistrate to make arrangements within seven days for “puja” to be performed by the Hindu side and a poojari nominated by Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust.

After the order of the court, “puja” and “aarti” were performed in the early hours.

The district court has issued the order on the plea of the head priest of Acharya Ved Vyas Peeth temple, Shailendra Kumar Pathak Vyas, seeking worship of Shringar Gauri and other visible, and invisible deities in the cellar of the mosque. Vyas is the scion of the family which was performing “puja” in this cellar till December 1993.

The plea says Vyas’s maternal grandfather, priest Somnath Vyas, used to perform prayers there till 1993 when the cellar was closed by the authorities.

The ASI survey, ordered by the same court, in connection with a related case, suggested that the mosque was constructed during Aurangzeb’s rule over the remains of a Hindu temple.

Frankfurt, Germany:

Germany’s biggest lender Deutsche Bank on Thursday announced plans to slash 3,500 jobs as part of a major cost-cutting drive after its net profit fell in 2023.

The group reported a net profit attributable to shareholders of 4.2 billion euros ($4.5 billion), a 16-percent drop on the year before when profits were boosted by a one-off tax benefit.

Costs related to the company’s savings and efficiency programme also weighed on net profit, with Deutsche spending 566 million euros on restructuring and severance expenses.

Revenues, however, jumped six percent year-on-year to 28.9 billion euros thanks to the European Central Bank’s higher interest rates.

Chief executive Christian Sewing praised the bank’s performance in “an uncertain environment” and highlighted that Deutsche had achieved a pre-tax profit of nearly 5.7 billion euros, the highest “in 16 years”.

The group also “maintained our focus on cost discipline”, he said, as Deutsche presses ahead with a 2.5-billion-euro efficiency push aimed at improving profitability.

As part of those efforts, Deutsche said it plans to cut around 3,500 jobs over the next two years, “mainly in non-client-facing areas”.

The bank employed around 85,000 people globally in 2022.

Deutsche also unveiled new targets for 2025, saying it would aim to achieve revenues of 32 billion euros and operate with total costs of around 20 billion euros.

For 2023, the group will propose shareholder dividends of 0.45 euros per share, a 50-percent increase on 2022.

Much-Awaited Snowfall Brings Cheer, Turns Kashmir Into Winter Wonderland

'Nature Has Blessed Us': Snow Brings Cheer, Turns Kashmir Into Wonderland

The “snowless” winter had brought disappointment to locals and tourists alike.

New Delhi:

The much-awaited snowfall has brought cheer to the people of the Kashmir and turned the Valley into a winter wonderland. Most parts of the Kashmir, mainly plains, received season’s first snowfall as winter’s harshest period – Chillai Kalan – went snowless and registered as driest winter spell ever.

Late night snowfall, in plains including Srinagar, brought cheer to people and caught them by surprise with netizens sharing videos and photos on various social media sites expressing joy. Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period that starts on December 21 every year and ends on January 31, went almost snowless with the Kashmir Valley witnessing unusual weather conditions this winter.

Even famous ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir, other tourist attractions like Pahalgam in south Kashmir and Sonamarg in central Kashmir also received less or no snowfall during this 40-day winter period. A rare phenomenon seen during winters in the Kashmir Valley.

The “snowless” winter had brought disappointment to locals and tourists alike. No snow in the Valley had taken sheen of it, which otherwise would mesmerise people with white landscape during winter.

Wednesday’s snowfall, however, brought Kashmir alive, ending the longest dry spell in the plains as most parts received season’s first snowfall.

People expressed their joy by sharing visuals on various social media sites including X, formerly Twitter. “Embracing the magic of the first snowfall in Shupiyan after a prolonged dry spell,” wrote a user on X.

“Magical snowfall in Kashmir! After a dry spell, nature has blessed us with this picturesque scene. Let’s embrace the beauty of winter!,” wrote another X user.

A user also shared pictures of Shikaras, covered in snow, lined up at the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake

“A glimpse of the #Shikaras docked at the shore of #DalLake as the city received fresh #snowfall, causing a drop in temperature, in #Srinagar on Thursday,” he wrote.

The absence of snow at major tourist attractions and other parts of the Kashmir had also disappointed tourists with many cancelling their planned trips. The fresh snowfall has now infused a new life, turning the Kashmir Valley into white picturesque landscape that it is known for during winters.
