'Struggled At 5th Spot': Ex-ENG Star Points Out Flaw In Jadeja's Batting

Former England captain Alastair Cook criticised the batting of India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja after the player failed to play a noticeable knock in the Ranchi Test. Jadeja, who batted at number 5 ahead of Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel in both innings against England, failed to help the team’s cause by returning scores of run-a-ball 12 and 4 off 33. Cook opined that the India star finds it hard to maintain a balance between attack and defence whenever he bats at the number 5 spot.

“Jadeja in particular showed probably why he should be batting a little bit lower.” Cook told TNT Sports.

“Yes he can score runs but the ability, under pressure, to find that balance between attack and defence under pressure – pressure does funny thing to you.

“Jadeja is a world-class all-rounder, but batting at five there he struggled in terms of taking no risks because he didn’t want to get out or trying to put a bit of pressure back on as a batter.”

On the other hand, Cook was all praise for Jurel, who was playing only his second Test match.

In the first innings of the Ranchi Test, Jurel scored 90 runs off 149 balls to keep India alive in the game while in the second innings he remained unbeaten at the score of 39 off 77 balls.

“But Jurel found that balance perfectly with his feet movement and sharpness of mind,” said Cook.

Shubman Gill and Jurel kept calm to lead India to a series-clinching five-wicket win over England. The hosts won the fourth Test by 5 wickets, taking an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series after they lost the first game.

Chasing 192 for victory, India slipped to 120 for 5 but Gill, who scored 52, and Jurel stitched unbeaten 72-run partnership to guide India to victory.

A Pakistani woman police officer is earning praises for her swift action to diffuse a potentially violent situation in Lahore. In a widely shared video, Assistant Superintendent of Police Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi was seen saving a woman from a mob.

The woman was targeted by a mob who accused her of blasphemy, mistaking the Arabic prints on her kurta for Quranic verses. The police were called to a local restaurant, where the woman, accompanied by her husband, was asked to take off her kurta.

The police, including Ms Naqvi, responded to the call. A video showed ASP Naqvi trying to clear the confusion surrounding the kurta, before safely escorting the woman away from the mob.

On the incident, Ms Naqvi said: “The woman had gone for shopping with her husband. She had worn a kurta that had some words written on it. When some people saw it they asked her to remove the kurta. There was a confusion.”

Her role in pacifying the angry mob and safely escorting the accused woman out of the restaurant has earned her praise and recognition.

Inspector General of Punjab Usman Anwar officially stated that Ms Naqvi’s name has been recommended for the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal (QPM), the highest gallantry award for law enforcement in Pakistan, citing her “heroic deed”, stating, “ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi, the brave SDPO of Gulbarg Lahore, put her life in danger to rescue a woman from a violent crowd.”

Ms Naqvi is also being praised online for her bravery.

A user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “You are braver than those cowards who are harassing innocent women. I acknowledge your bravery. Hats off to you, and more power to you. Stay strong; we are with you. Your resilience in the face of such despicable behaviour is truly inspiring.”

Another user stated, “God bless you, sister. You’ve done an extraordinary job and saved the life. May Almighty curse the people who tried to mould the situation into crisis.”

“An excellent job by an ASP for a change. This is how police should be. well done,” read a comment.

Someone else praised, “Huge respect for this police officer. Brave lady,” while another added, “Salute to this Brave Woman.”

Users also expressed pride and support, with comments such as “Proud of her sir she deserves more…” and “She really deserves this award.”

“ASP Syeda Shehrbano Naqvi is the face I wish every Pakistani had become.” another comment read.

The accused woman, who was taken to the police station, later apologised for unintentionally hurting religious sentiments. She stated, “I had no intentions of insulting anyone’s religious sentiments. I bought the kurta just because it had a good design.”

US, UK launch 4 fresh attacks on Yemen

The US and the UK targeted two regions in Yemen’s Al Hudaydah with fighter jets.

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian Resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

Yemeni Armed Forces have said that they won’t stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza, which have killed at least 27,948 people and wounded another 67,459 individuals, come to an end.

The United States and Britain in December announced a military coalition to target Yemen in support of Israel.

Manipur Police Warn Armed Group Arambai Tenggol After Attack On Senior Cop

Manipur Police Warn Armed Group 'Arambai Tenggol' After Attack On Senior Officer's House

Senior Manipur Police officers K Muivah and K Jayanta Singh in a joint media briefing

Imphal/Guwahati/New Delhi:

The Manipur Police have named an armed group whose members call themselves “village defence volunteers” as responsible for the attack on the house of a senior police officer in the state capital Imphal on Tuesday night.

Following the attack, the state called in central forces including the army to Imphal city, from where the Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act, or AFSPA, had been removed years ago. This law allows the security forces to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without a warrant. The AFSPA is active in the hill areas due to presence of insurgents of several ethnicities along the border with troubled Myanmar.

The police in a statement on Thursday said members of the Arambai Tenggol, a Meitei youth organisation whose members face allegations of looting weapons from state armouries, “carried out a targeted attack” on the house of senior police officer Moirangthem Amit Singh, who along with his team had seized two stolen cars on Tuesday.

This was the first time the Manipur Police openly admitted to the involvement of the Arambai Tenggol, or AT, in a violent act.

The AT enjoys wide support in the valley areas. Their supporters say the AT acts as a layer of defence in the absence of state forces in the foothills, where the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis have clashed the most.

“Police officers Moirangthem Amit Singh, P Achouba Meitei, and others have been working tirelessly and contributing to efforts to ensure law and order in the state,” the police said in the statement, condemning the attack at the officer’s house near Imphal East area.

The armed members of the Arambai Tenggol had also vandalised vehicles and a clinic that belongs to Mr Singh’s family, whose seven members are doctors, the police said.

“Officer Was Only Doing Duty”

Inspector Generals of Police K Muivah and K Jayanta Singh in a joint media briefing said the targeting of the senior police officer who was only doing his duty in tough conditions was “extremely unfortunate”.

“It is our appeal to the public to give maximum cooperation to the police. Civil society organisations should also understand the situation because if we are not able to perform, other security agencies have to come to our aid, and we have experienced all those things in the past decades, how it was like. We don’t want to return to the past,” Mr Muivah told reporters in Imphal on Thursday.

“If the civil police are not able to perform their duties due to lack of cooperation from the public, or obstruction by civil society organisations, then normally what happens, as in all other states, the central security forces have to automatically come in to help,” he said.

“That means the CRPF, the BSF, the Assam Rifles, the army, all have to come in to assist. And then resolve the situation in a way that may be far more undesirable, far more different than what the police would do in a normal situation,” Mr Muivah said, also referring to the Central Reserve Police Force, and the Border Security Force.

The police in the statement that was released to the media after the briefing said the AT is “engaged in many anti-social activities such as assaulting civilians, and snatching vehicles from the public and government officials.”

“They are also involved in extortion from the public and traders. They are gathering false support from the public in the garb of protecting them, but are committing many anti-social and criminal acts. The public must not be misled, and instead cooperate with the Manipur Police in bringing peace and tranquillity in the state,” the police said in the statement.

To prevent law and order issues as a fallout of the violence in Imphal linked to the AT, the district magistrates in two Kuki-Zo tribes-dominated hill districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, and two Meitei-dominated valley districts of Bishnupur and Thoubal have called in the army to help in maintaining law and order. NDTV has seen copies of the orders issued by the four magistrates.

When AT “Asked” Political Leaders To Work For People

The AT on January 24 called over 35 MLAs and other leaders to the Kangla Fort in the heart of Imphal, and made them take an oath to protect Manipur’s territorial integrity. The fort served as the seat of power of the Manipur kingdom before Independence, and so held a symbolic meaning for the Meiteis to keep Manipur intact for all communities amid the demand by the Kuki-Zo tribes for a separate administration carved out of Manipur.

The optics of the oath-taking event, however, drew criticism over the fact that a group that had taken up arms – whatever be their name – coerced elected representatives to obey them, sources in the Manipur Police told NDTV.

The violence between the Kuki-Zo tribes and the Meiteis in the northeast state bordering Myanmar – which itself is struggling not to break into pieces as the junta has been surrounded by pro-democracy armed groups – has dragged on for 10 months now. The Kuki-Zo people share ethnic and familial ties with Myanmar’s Chin people. The key factors of the Manipur tensions include disagreements over sharing land, resources, political representation, and affirmative action policies.

“Police Ineffective In Protecting Us”: AT Supporters

The AT’s supporters in the valley say the police are ineffective in dealing with attacks by suspected Kuki-Zo insurgents in the foothills. Over two dozen Kuki-Zo insurgent groups come under two umbrella groups – the Kuki National Organisation (KNO), and the United People’s Front (UPF) – and these two have signed what is known as the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the state government.

Broadly, the SoO agreement – reviewed every year – says the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in locked storage, to be monitored regularly. However, insurgents who are part of the SoO agreement have been allegedly taking part in the Manipur violence, with many missing during attendance calls at their designated camps.

The Manipur assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution asking the Centre to scrap the controversial SoO agreement. The deadline for extension of the SoO agreement also ended on Thursday.

“This decision comes in the interest of ensuring peace and security in the region,” Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who the Kuki-Zo tribes hold responsible for the Manipur violence, said in a post on X on Thursday.

Ten months since May 2023, the Kuki-Zo tribes accuse the Meiteis of razing their vacant buildings and occupying them in and around Imphal valley, while the Meiteis have pointed at entire localities of their community flattened and erased in the hill district Churachandpur.

Both sides accuse each other of atrocities. The Kuki-Zo tribes say their “village defence volunteers” have been repelling attacks by armed groups from the valley, who come to the hills across the “sensitive zone” with obvious intentions.

Both call themselves “village defence volunteers”, a definition of the belligerents in Manipur that has become the most controversial since nothing stops these “volunteers” from killing people under the insurance provided by “in self-defence”.

A similarity between the “village defence volunteers” of both sides is that they appear to be well-armed and well-equipped with modern battle gear. The security forces have frequently recovered Russian-origin AK and US-origin M series assault rifles, and gun models commonly used by both the junta’s army and pro-democracy insurgents in neighbouring Myanmar.

Over 200 have died in the violence and thousands have been internally displaced.

Poll: Majority of Dems favor a US president against military aid to Israel

Latest polls show a majority of Democrats prefer a presidential candidate who does not back the unqualified US military assistance to Israel.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll showed 56% of Democrats said they were less likely to support a candidate who backs such an aid.

Democrats also overwhelmingly said they wanted a presidential candidate who would call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

22 percent of Democrats in the poll blamed Israel for the killings in Gaza.

The poll results illustrate a potentially critical vulnerability for President Joe Biden, who has angered some within his party by supporting Israel.

Biden’s early and vocal support of Israel and his refusal to condition military aid on a change in Israel’s military tactics has sparked outrage among the Democrats.

The Biden administration has repeatedly sent munitions to Israel after promising “unwavering” support to Israel in the wake of the hostilities in Gaza in early October.

Washington has said it was still not drawing any red lines for Israel.

The Gaza death toll keeps going up. Famine looms. Much of the besieged Palestinian territory’s 2.3 million population has become homeless. And Israel has killed nearly 30,000 people there since.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll results come ahead of a close November election.

Biden has said an attack on the Palestinians waiting for aid in northern Gaza will complicate efforts to reach a ceasefire. “I know it will,” Biden told reporters when asked about the matter.

The president said a pause in the fighting would probably not come by next Monday. Biden had predicted so in remarks earlier this week.

Elsewhere, Biden said there are “two competing versions of what happened” during the attack and that the US was “checking” what had happened.

Witnesses have said the incident began when Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd that was waiting for food.

At least 112 Palestinians waiting for food aid were killed and 760 wounded after being shot at by Israeli forces.

Israel is using starvation as a weapon against the Palestinians in Gaza.

'Testament To India's Unwavering Dedication...': PM Modi On Rise In Leopards

“This increase in leopard is testament to India’s unwavering dedication to biodiversity,” he said (File)

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness on Thursday over the increase in the leopard population in the country.

“Great news! This significant increase in leopard numbers is a testament to India’s unwavering dedication to biodiversity. I compliment all those who are part of the various collective efforts towards wildlife protection, paving the way for a sustainable coexistence,” the Prime Minister shared on X.

Earlier in the day, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupendra Yadav, took to social media and announced that the leopard population now stands at 13,874.

“Released the report on Status of Leopards in India today. Happy to share that the estimated leopard population in 70% of the leopard occupied area in India is now 13,874, up from 12,852 in 2018. Central India recorded the highest population with Madhya Pradesh having 3,907 leopards,” Yadav posted on X.

Thanking the Prime Minister for his guidance, he said, “This conservation journey embodies the ethos of one earth, one family, and one future. Congratulations to all contributors to this crucial mission.”

Earlier in January, as many as 718 snow leopards were reported as part of the first-ever scientific exercise that was carried out by the Wildlife Institute of India (WII).

Bhupender Yadav released the report during the National Board for Wildlife meeting held in New Delhi.

The Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) programme is the first-ever scientific exercise.

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is the National Coordinator for this exercise, which was carried out with the support of all snow leopard range states and two conservation partners, the Nature Conservation Foundation, Mysuru and WWF-India.

The assessment covered over 70 per cent of the potential snow leopard range in the country, covering approximately 120,000 km2 of crucial snow leopard habitat across the trans-Himalayan region, including the Union territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, and states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.

A portion of the house collapsed.

Lucknow:

Two women were injured after a tree being uprooted for road widening came crashing onto their house in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia on Thursday.

A video shows a tractor and an earth-moving machine tugging the trunk of the tree using ropes tied to it. The tree was being pulled in the direction of the road but it can be seen heading the other way and then crashing into a house on the other side.

A portion of the one-storey structure collapses and the two women – who were on the roof – are then seen lying injured on the ground, with family members and bystanders rushing to their aid. The women are undergoing treatment at the district hospital.

Ballia Sub-Divisional Magistrate Atraiya Mishra said a road was being widened in the Jalalpur area and the Public Works Department had assigned the task to a contractor.

Asked whether permission had been taken from the forest department and why the area had not been evacuated, Mr Mishra said, “An investigation will be conducted. The administration is handling the matter sensitively and will extend all possible financial aid as well.”

WPL: Delhi Capitals brave Mandhana’s blitz, romp home

Shafali Varma plays a shot during the clash.

Bengaluru: Delhi Capitals braved a sensational battering from Smriti Mandhana to hand a fighting Royal Challengers Bangalore a 25-run defeat in their Women’s Premier League match here on Thursday.

Mandhana fused power and grace to score 74 (43b, 10×4, 3×6) but other batters did not quite make it big as Royal Challengers, who were without indisposed star all-rounder Elysse Perry, ended up at 169 for nine. The Capitals made a challenging 194 for five as Shafali Varma mustered a 31-ball 50 after they were asked to bat first.

But that total was under severe threat when Mandhana tore into the DC attack with panache. They went off the blocks in an energetic fashion as Mandhana took it upon herself the task of leading her side’s reply. She started with two fours off pacer Marizanne Kaap (2/38) and the left-hander only stepped up on the aggression from that point.

Mandhana faced 28 balls in the Power Play segment and hammered 45 runs as the home team reached an impressive 52 for no loss after six overs. Sophie Devine just had to watch all the fun from her end as Mandhana reached her first-ever WPL fifty in just 32 balls when she took a quick two off off-spinner Minnu Mani.

Devine too had her own moments like when she moussed two successive sixes off Minnu, one each over long-on and mid-wicket. But the Kiwi batter soon fell to pacer Arundhati Reddy as her top-edged pull ended in the hands of Jess Jonassen.

However, Mandhana continued her aggressive ways and smoked Kapp over mid-wicket for a six. But the veteran South African had the last laugh as she uprooted the off-stump with a slower delivery that beat Mandhana’s tentative swish.

Richa Ghosh gave RCB a glimmer of hope, biffing Arundhati for two consecutive pulled sixes but fell to the guile of Kapp, whose climbing delivery curtailed the wicketkeeper-batter’s stay.

Thereafter the task only grew steeper for RCB as left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen (3/21) produced an excellent spell. RCB lost six wickets for 18 runs at that stage. Earlier, Verma (50, 3×4, 4×6) and Alice Capsey (46, 33b, 4×4, 2×6) added 82 runs for the second wicket as the Capitals recovered from the early loss of skipper Meg Lanning.

Kapp (32, 16b, 2×4, 3×6) and Jess Jonassen (36 not out, 16b, 4×4, 2×6) also played blinders towards the end to give a fillip to the Capitals as they added 58 runs for the fifth wicket in a little over four overs. Verma, who was dropped on two by Shreyanka Patil off pacer Renuka Singh, and Capsey went about their task shifting seamlessly through the gears.

Verma gave a lot of steam to DC innings when she smashed left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux for a four and six off successive balls. Capsey was more innovative in her shot selection, often bringing out reverse sweeps and scoops behind the stumper. Verma reached her second fifty of this WPL with a six off off-spinner Shreyanka over mid-wicket.

But she fell in the very next ball, pulling Shreyanka straight into the hands of Georgia Wareham at mid-wicket. De Klerk soon delivered a wonderful slow yorker to castle Capsey and Jemimah Rodrigues returned without contributing a single run as the Capitals slipped into a mini-slump. However, Kapp and Jonassen took the RCB bowlers to the cleaners between 14th and 18th overs to ensure that DC would finish strong.

Brief Scores: Delhi Capitals 194/5 (Shafali Verma 50, Alice Capsey 46; Sophie Devine 2/23) bt Royal Challengers Bangalore 3/21).

Hyderabad: The stage is set for the grand finale as Puneri Paltan and Haryana Steelers lock horns in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 Final at the GMC Balayogi Sports Complex, Gachibowli, Hyderabad on Friday.

The Puneri Paltan will have their full contingent of players when they take the mat for a second straight final. It will be another chance to win their first PKL trophy. Along with the strong performance of their skipper Aslam Inamdar, the whole team has contributed to their success in Season 10.

They have proven their credentials as worthy finalists after topping the league table with record points. A lot of the credit also goes to their defensive stalwart Mohammadreza Shadloui Chiyaneh as well as their supporting raiders Mohit Goyat and Pankaj Mohite.

After their massive semifinal 1 win over the Patna Pirates, Puneri Paltan skipper Inamdar praised his whole team for their efforts this season, saying, “A captain is as good as his team. The whole team has been doing well so I am happy with my performance as well. My confidence is also very high because of the way we have been raiding and defending the whole season, especially in the semifinal.”

With a tough challenge against the Haryana Steelers in the final, Aslam is sure that his team is prepared, “All the players, including me, are taking the responsibility of remaining fit so that we can win the trophy. When the team isn’t training, we are all working on our own strength and conditioning.”

Meanwhile, having impressed all with their performances this season, the Haryana Steelers are well-deserved finalists. Led by young skipper Jaideep Dahiya and coached by three-time finalist Manpreet Singh, the Haryana Steelers have a young breed of Kabaddi players who have worked hard to earn their spot in the final.

Speaking after their win over Jaipur Pink Panthers in semifinal 2, Jaideep praised their opponents but was confident of winning what promises to be an exciting finale to season 10, “Puneri Paltan are very tough opponents. Yes, we beat them in the league stage, but they have beaten us too. It’s going to be a very exciting final. Both Mohit and Aslam are very good players, helping their team to the top of the league table. But we are no less; we are a young team who will fight to win the trophy.”
