Palestinian death toll in Gaza nears 30,000: Ministry

Gaza: The Palestinian death toll in the Gaza Strip has risen to 29,954 as the Israeli military killed 76 in the past 24 hours, the Hamas-run Health Ministry said.

Meanwhile, 110 others were wounded, bringing the total number of Palestinian injuries since the Israel-Hamas war broke out in early October to 70,325, the Ministry said on Wednesday in a statement.

It noted that some victims remain under the rubble amid heavy bombardment and a lack of civil defence and ambulance crews, Xinhua news agency reported.

On Wednesday, Israeli media outlets reported that two officers were killed and seven soldiers were injured during battles in the Gaza Strip, pushing the death toll to 582.

Citing IDF sources, the reports said Israel’s ground operations continued throughout the Gaza Strip under the support of air and naval bombardment.

The reports said the Israeli army destroyed tunnels and other Hamas infrastructure, eliminating “terrorist cells” and seizing large quantities of weapons.

In addition, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman Daniel Hagari said that the goal of the war in Gaza, which is to ensure the October 7 attack never ever happens again, will take time to achieve.

Israel has pushed forward a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and more than 200 were taken hostage.

Man Can't Be Held Guilty For Abetment Of Wife's Suicide Unless…: Court

Man Can't Be Held Guilty For Abetment Of Wife's Suicide Unless...: Supreme Court

The prosecution claimed that soon after marriage, the man and his parents started demanding money

New Delhi:

A man cannot be held guilty for abetment of his wife’s suicide within seven years of marriage unless there is cogent evidence of harassment or cruelty, the Supreme Court has said while acquitting a man charged with abetting the suicide of his wife three decades ago.

Section 113A of the Indian Evidence Act establishes the presumption of abetment by a husband and in-laws in cases where a woman’s suicide occurs within seven years of marriage and she has been subjected to cruelty.

In this case, the man got married in 1992. The prosecution claimed that soon after marriage, the man and his parents started demanding money as he wanted to start a ration shop.

Records reveal that on November 19, 1993, the woman committed suicide by consuming poison. According to the prosecution, she committed suicide on account of incessant harassment at the end of her husband.

Additional sessions judge of Karnal in 1998 held the man guilty of the offence punishable under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which was upheld by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The Supreme Court said that to convict a person under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC, there has to be a clear “mens rea” (criminal intent) to commit the offence.

A bench of Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra said mere harassment is not sufficient to hold an accused guilty of abetting the commission of suicide and it also requires an active act or direct act which led the person to commit suicide.

The top court said courts must remain very careful and vigilant in applying the correct principles of law governing the subject of abetment of suicide of a woman within seven years of marriage or it may give an impression that the conviction is not legal but rather moral.

“This court has held that from the mere fact of suicide within seven years of marriage, one should not jump to the conclusion of abetment unless cruelty was proved. In the absence of any cogent evidence of harassment or cruelty, an accused cannot be held guilty for the offence under Section 306 of IPC by raising a presumption under Section 113A,” the bench said.

It said mere demand of money from the wife or her parents for running a business without anything more would not constitute cruelty or harassment. The top court also said that from the mere fact of suicide within seven years of marriage, one should not jump to the conclusion of abetment unless cruelty was proven.

“Had there been any clinching evidence of incessant harassment on account of which the wife was left with no other option but to put an end to her life, it could have been said that the accused intended the consequences of his act, namely, suicide,” it said.

The bench said courts should be extremely careful in assessing evidence under section 113A to find out if cruelty was meted out.

“If it transpires that a victim committing suicide was hypersensitive to ordinary petulance, discord and differences in domestic life quite common to the society to which the victim belonged and such petulance, discord and differences were not expected to induce a similarly circumstanced individual in a given society to commit suicide, the conscience of the court would not be satisfied for holding that the accused charged of abetting the offence of suicide was guilty,” it said.

Commenting on the ordeal suffered by the man, the top court said the “criminal justice system of ours can itself be a punishment”.

“It is exactly what has happened in this case. It did not take more than 10 minutes for this court to reach an inevitable conclusion that the conviction of the appellant convict for the offence punishable under Section 306 of the IPC is not sustainable in law.

“The ordeal for the appellant started sometime in 1993 and is coming to an end in 2024, i.e. almost after a period of 30 years of suffering. At the same time, we are also mindful of the fact that a young woman died leaving behind her six-month-old infant. No crime should go unpunished. But at the same time, the guilt of the accused has to be determined in accordance with law,” the bench said.

German warship opens fire on US Reaper drone: Reports

German media outlets carried the reports on Monday, describing the attack as a friendly fire incident.

According to Germany’s Der Spiegel weekly, the warship fired two missiles at the aircraft, but both the projectiles crashed into the sea because of “a technical defect.”

The “Hesse” frigate involved in the incident headed towards the Red Sea earlier this month as means of thwarting Yemen’s pro-Palestine operations.

Yemen’s Armed Forces have been targeting Israeli vessels or those bound for the occupied territories’ ports in protest at the Israeli regime’s October-present war against the Gaza Strip that has so far killed nearly 30,000 Palestinians.

The forces have vowed to keep up the operations as long as the Israeli regime sustained the war and a simultaneous siege that it has been employing against Gaza.

The German warship opened fire after efforts to identify an unknown drone “were unsuccessful,” Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, adding that the target was “not hit.” The aircraft later turned out to be a “reconnaissance drone,” he said.

The drone was apparently not related to a United States-led naval coalition that has been similarly operating in the Red Sea to confront the Yemeni operations.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper said it was “common knowledge that American combat drones are used in the region that have nothing to do with the [US-led] operation in the Red Sea.”

Spiegel said military officials believed that the incident showed that coordination between allies involved in various missions in the region around Yemen “needs to be improved.”

Ghana passes controversial Anti-Homosexuality Bill, sparks global outcry

Ghana: Ghana‘s parliament made headlines on Wednesday as it unanimously approved a contentious anti-homosexuality bill, eliciting widespread international condemnation, CNN reported.

Sam George, a key sponsor of the legislation, announced the milestone on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “After three long years, we have finally passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act.”

Introduced in 2021, the bill not only criminalises LGBTQ relationships but also targets individuals who advocate for LGBTQ rights. Many African nations still uphold colonial-era laws criminalising same-sex activity, and recent bills across the continent have sought to clarify or strengthen these laws, according to CNN.

A CNN investigation raised concerns about alleged ties between a US nonprofit and the formulation of such homophobic laws, although the group denied any connections. Despite the parliamentary approval, the bill awaits the president’s signature before becoming law.

United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker Turk expressed deep concern, calling the bill’s passage “profoundly disturbing” and urging the government to reconsider. Turk highlighted the broadening scope of criminal sanctions against LGBTQ individuals and their perceived allies, emphasising the potential threats to human rights.

UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima warned of the far-reaching consequences if the bill is enacted, asserting that it would adversely affect everyone and impede Ghana’s efforts in combating HIV and AIDS. Byanyima emphasised the importance of inclusive approaches, citing the crucial role they play in Ghana’s progress in the HIV response.

She cautioned that the legislation would hinder free speech, freedom of movement, and freedom of association while obstructing access to life-saving services, undermining social protection, and jeopardizing Ghana’s development success.

Byanyima highlighted that punitive laws like this bill act as barriers to ending AIDS and ultimately compromise public health, as reported by CNN.

Breakaway Transnistria asks Russia for ‘protection’ against Moldova

Pro-Russian officials in the Moldovan breakaway region of Transnistria have called for help from Moscow to protect them in the face of increased pressure from Moldova’s government.

The appeal to Moscow was made on Wednesday at a special session of Transnistria’s Congress of Deputies.

“[We] appeal to the Federation Council and the State Duma of the Russian Federation, requesting measures to protect Transnistria amidst increased pressure from Moldova,” read a resolution adopted by Transnistrian lawmakers.

The congress accused the Moldovan government of initiating an “economic war” on the region by blocking crucial imports and imposing customs regulations that force companies in Transnistria to pay import duties into the Moldovan budget. This move has been described as an attempt to isolate the region and turn it into a “ghetto.”

The resolution noted that more than “220,000 Russian citizens” live inside the region as Moscow has recently made it easier for Moldovans to get Russian citizenship.

At its last session in 2006, the assembly asked to join Russia, though Moscow did not act on that request.

Russian media outlets cited Vadim Krasnoselsky, the self-proclaimed president of the region, as requesting assistance from Moscow due to what he described as a genocide being carried out against Transnistria.

“Protection of interests of Transnistrian people, our compatriots is one of Russia’s priorities, and Russian agencies review all Tiraspol’s requests carefully,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in response.

In a recent development, Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister Oleg Serebrian posted that Moldova firmly opposes the “propaganda statements” originating from Tiraspol, the nominal capital of Transnistria.

Earlier, a Moldovan government spokesman said there was “no danger of escalation and destabilization of the situation in the Transnistrian region. This is another campaign to create hysteria.”

The Transnistria resolution comes just a day before Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to make an annual address to the Russian parliament, coinciding with Ukraine’s recent setbacks on the battlefield.

Since Moscow launched its full-scale military operation in Ukraine, Moldova has expressed concern that the Kremlin could use Transnistria to open a new front in the southwest, near the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa.

The thin strip of land, home to about 470,000 people, has been de facto controlled by pro-Russian forces since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992 but is internationally recognized as part of Moldova.

Can Kishan-Iyer Still Play For India After BCCI Contract Termination?

After opting out of domestic games, star India cricketers Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were axed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of the Annual Central Contracts on Wednesday. The BCCI, in an official release, confirmed that Ishan and Iyer were not considered for the central contracts, finalised for the duration between October 1st, 2023 to September 30th, 2024. Kishan had opted out of the South Africa tour midway, citing fatigue. He was not selected for the Afghanistan T20Is and the ongoing Test series against England.

India head coach Rahul Dravid had urged Ishan Kishan to play Ranji Trophy, but the player paid no heed to it. After skipping Jharkhand’s Ranji games, Kishan was seen training with Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya in Baroda ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Iyer, on the other hand, played two Tests against England, but didn’t find a place in the squad for the last three matches. The batter informed his domestic side, Mumbai, that he is suffering from back pain, a statement which was denied by the National Cricket Academy (NCA) head of sports science Nitin Patel.

What next for Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer?

After being denied central contracts, can Kishan and Iyer still play for India? Yes! The selection of players in the Indian team is based on fitness and current form.

Even players who are not centrally contracted can be picked to represent India. For instance, New Zealand pacer Trent Boult had opted out of central contract last year, but represented the Blackcaps during the World Cup and other events.

The big names who have lost their contracts include Cheteshwar Pujara, Shikhar Dhawan, Umesh Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who all have fallen out of favour with the selectors.

It signals the end of the road for the likes of Pujara but the 33-year-old Chahal can still make a case for himself if he plays more games.

The selection committee has also recommended fast bowling contracts for Akash Deep, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Umran Malik, Yash Dayal and Vidwath Kaverappa. This system has been place since 2021-22 but it is for the first time that the BCCI has officially released names of the selected players.

Akash Deep had impressed on debut in the recent fourth Test against England, which India won to seal the series. He has been recommended for a fast bowling contract, alongside four other pacers, by the selection committee.

Kate Middleton's 2-Month Absence After Surgery Fuels Rumours Online

Kate Middleton's 2-Month Absence After Surgery Fuels Rumours Online

Kensington Palace has said Kate Middleton will return to public duties after Easter next month. (File)

Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, has been away from the public eye since December, leaving social media users speculating about the UK royal. According to Kensington Palace, the 42-year-old is recovering at home after a “planned abdominal surgery” in January, but some users believe the royal is in an “induced coma”.

On January 17, the office of the Prince and Princess of Wales said in a statement that the royal would spend 10 to 14 days in hospital after the surgical procedure and later recover at home.

“Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales was admitted to hospital yesterday for planned abdominal surgery. The surgery was successful, and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days, before returning home to continue her recovery,” the statement read.

However, in recent days, the royal’s prolonged absence from public life has spurred talk. While claims range from genuine concern to outlandish conspiracy theories, the most popular theory is that the royal suffered complications during her surgery and was put in an induced coma.

Spanish TV show host and journalist Concha Calleja first claimed that Kate was intubated and put under a coma after the procedure. “The decision was to put her in an induced coma. They had to intubate her. It was about saving her life,” Ms Calleja said.

Although Ms Calleja’s statements were dismissed as rumours by sources close to Buckingham Palace, it has done little to deter royal watchers and social media users from making more bizarre claims about the royal.

Kate’s husband Prince William, who recently pulled out of a scheduled appearance at a Windsor Castle citing a “personal matter”, has been seen attending galas and events alone, an unusual sight.

X, formerly Twitter, was flooded with memes about the royal going “missing”.

Soon after the royal family announced that Kate was undergoing a surgery, a new statement revealed King Charles was to have a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate. The 75-year-old monarch, who ascended to the throne last year, later revealed a cancer diagnosis.

While Kensington Palace has said Kate Middleton will return to public duties after Easter next month, local UK media claims it may take her up to nine months to recover completely.

The Buckingham Palace is yet to disclose the nature of the surgery.
