Karimnagar: BRS leader and former MP B Vinod Kumar urged the state government not to create troubles for farmers by denying water to standing crops of the Yasangi season. Vinod Kumar along with former MLA Rasamai Balkishan examined withered crops, dried up tanks and canals in Chimalakuntapalli of Ganneruvaram mandal on Thursday. They interacted with farmers and enquired about their problems.

Speaking on the occasion, the BRS leader said that the Congress government was trying to deny water to irrigation projects on the pretext of the sinking of Medigadda barrage pillars. As a result, farmers were worried as standing crops withered due to lack of water. Farmers were of the view that the money invested on crops would go waste.

The state government was least bothered though 5000 cusecs of water was flowing down Medigadda and getting wasted. He advised the government to construct copper dam across Godavari river near Medigadda and lift water to Annaram, Sundilla and Yellampalli projects. Later, the government should lift water to Mid Manair and supply water to standing crops through canals, he felt.

The previous BRS government supplied water to farmers whenever they required. However, irrigation tanks as well as standing crops were facing water problems due to negligence of the Congress government.

There was a chance of standing crops to wither further due to soaring heat conditions in the next fortnight and cattle would also not get drinking water. So, the government should take initiative to protect standing crops by supplying water.

BRS district president GV Ramakrishna Rao, Rajanna-Sircilla ZP vice-chairman Siddam Venu and others were present.

GDP Growth Beats Estimates In 3rd Quarter, Economy To Expand 7.6% This Year

India’s economy expanded 8.4 per cent in the December quarter from a year

New Delhi:

India’s economy rose 8.4 per cent in the October-December period, the fastest pace seen in six quarters and beating all estimates, partly helped by a surge in manufacturing activity, according to data released by the government on Thursday.

The growth rate was much faster than economists’ forecasts of 6.6 per cent as seen in a Reuters poll, and higher than the revised growth of 8.1 per cent in the previous quarter.

The manufacturing sector, which for the past decade has accounted for just 17 per cent of Asia’s third-largest economy, expanded 11.6 per cent year-on-year in the December quarter, compared with a revised 14.4 per cent in the previous three months.

The farm sector, which accounts for about 15 per cent of the $3.7 trillion economy, contracted 0.8 per cent, compared with 1.6 per cent growth in the September quarter.

“Robust 8.4% GDP growth in Q3 2023-24 shows the strength of Indian economy and its potential,” Prime Minister Modi posted on X.

“Looking ahead, we expect economic activity to moderate over the coming quarters but it should still remain exceptionally strong, which will limit the need for policy loosening for a while,” Thamashi De Silva, assistant India economist, Capital Economics, London, told news agency Reuters.

Upasna Bhardwaj, Kotak Mahindra Bank chief economist, said the sharp upward revision to the GDP comes on the backdrop of downward revision to FY23 figures and stronger investment and net exports in FY24, but lagging consumption.

Identity mismatch lands Indian Umrah pilgrim in Saudi jail

Jeddah: A spiritual journey to Islam’s Holy Land turned sour for an Indian family after one of the family members was detained at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport as his name and particulars matched with a ‘wanted criminal’ and case dating back some 25 years.

The passenger had never travelled to Saudi Arabia or any other country in his life and this was his maiden trip that landed him in trouble, according to the family.

The 57-year-old, identified as Mohammed Ghouse, a resident of Jayanagar in Bengaluru, was working as a Road Transport Commission agent in the city. He along with eight of his relatives arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah on Monday.

According to Mohammed Mutabbir, the nephew of Ghouse, he was stopped upon arrival at the airport in Jeddah by passport authorities. “They took his passport. We thought it was a routine procedure but later he was taken to a separate room. We were told that he was being detained as his data matches that of a criminal wanted by police,” he said.

“When I asked officials about my uncle, they told me that he will be handed over to the police in the Asir region whose capital headquarter Abha is 600 km from Jeddah,” Mutabbir added.

Frightened and not knowing what to do, Mutabbir along with other group pilgrims panicked with the sudden development. They approached the Indian consulate, which acted swiftly, and its team visited the airport and met the detained Umrah pilgrim, who was later moved to Abha for investigation.

The family has been anxiously waiting for the verification process and his release from behind bars. The family also informed that Ghouse had never been to Saudi Arabia or any other part of the world in his life, he obtained a passport for the first time last month only.

During the last Haj season, an elderly pilgrim from Madhya Pradesh was also detained for mismatching details and was released later.

Traffic police caught 59 minors driving vehicles in Khammam.

Khammam: Traffic ACP Srinivasulu said that special attention was paid to driving of two and four wheelers by minors in the city and 59 were caught driving the vehicles.

Traffic police were conducting extensive inspections as per the orders of Commissioner of Police Sunil Dutt in view of significant increase in the number of road accidents in recent times. The accidents were caused by drunken driving and driving by minors.

In the past few days, several students and minors met with accidents while driving bikes and cars. Taking the matter seriously, the traffic police seized the vehicles of 59 minors who were caught driving and counselled them in the presence of their parents, the ACP said.

If minors were caught driving vehicles, strict action would be taken. Parents and vehicle owners should not give vehicles to minors who do not know traffic rules and road rules. If any untoward incident happens, the family would have to suffer for the rest of their lives.

Hence parents should keep their children away from driving vehicles. Classes on road safety were being given to students in all schools about road and traffic regulation to create awareness about traffic rules from the student stage, Srinivasulu said.

Similarly, 54 vehicles were seized on Thursday without number plates. The vehicles were returned to the motorists who brought the number plates. Traffic CI Mohan Rao, SI Ravi, RSI Sagar were present.

India’s GDP grows at massive 8.4 per cent in Q3 of financial year, suggests govt data

New Delhi: India’s GDP grew at a massive 8.4 per cent during the October-December quarter of the current financial year 2023-24 and the country continued to remain the fastest-growing major economy.

The Indian economy grew 7.8 per cent and 7.6 per cent during the preceding two quarters – April-June and July-September, data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Thursday showed.

Real GDP or GDP at Constant (2011-12) Prices in the year 2023-24 is estimated to attain a level of Rs 172.90 lakh crore, against the FRE (first revised estimates)of GDP for the year 2022-23 of Rs 160.71 lakh crore.

The growth rate of GDP during 2023-24 has been estimated at 7.6 per cent as compared to growth rate of 7 per cent in 2022-23.

Nominal GDP or GDP at Current Prices in the year 2023-24 is estimated to attain a level of Rs 293.90 lakh crore, against Rs 269.50 lakh crore in 2022-23, showing a growth rate of 9.1 per cent.

GDP at Constant (2011-12) Prices in Q3 of 2023-24 is estimated at Rs 43.72 lakh crore, against Rs 40.35 lakh crore in Q3 of 2022-23, showing a growth rate of 8.4 per cent.

GDP at Current Prices in Q3 of 2023-24 is estimated at Rs 75.49 lakh crore, as against Rs 68.58 lakh crore in Q3 of 2022-23, showing a growth rate of 10.1 per cent.

India’s real GDP growth for the current financial year ending in March 2024 is also pegged at 7 per cent by the Reserve Bank of India. It is 30 basis points lower than the National Statistics Office’s first estimates 7.3 per cent.

The strength of domestic demand has driven the economy to a 7 per cent plus growth rate in the last three years.

India’s economy grew 7.2 per cent in 2022-23 and 8.7 per cent in 2021-22, respectively.

The robustness seen in domestic demand — private consumption and investment — traces its origin to the reforms and measures implemented by the government over the last 10 years, Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance had said earlier.

In the next three years, India is expected to become the third-largest economy in the world, with a GDP of USD 5 trillion. India can aspire to become a USD 7 trillion economy in the next six to seven years (by 2030), the finance ministry had asserted.

Firm GDP growth forecasts, inflation at manageable levels, political stability at the central government level and signs that the central bank is done tightening its monetary policy have all contributed to painting a bright picture for the Indian economy.
