On February 13, Shehbaz Sharif was nominated for the position of PM by his brother Nawaz Sharif.

Islamabad:

The National Assembly (NA) Secretariat has released the timetable for the prime ministerial election to be held in Pakistan on March 3, as per ARY News.

Newly sworn-in MNAs will participate in the voting process for the prime minister’s position on Sunday.

According to the schedule issued by the NA Secretariat, aspirants for the premiership can submit their nomination papers by 2 pm on March 2. The final list of candidates will be issued following scrutiny of the nomination papers.

Nomination papers can be obtained from the legislation department, with candidates instructed to submit them to the NA Secretariat.

Notably, Shehbaz Sharif has been nominated by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and other allies, while the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has named Omar Ayub as its candidate.

The 16th National Assembly commenced its proceedings earlier in the day, with newly elected MNAs taking their oaths administered by Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf. The session, scheduled for 10 am, commenced after 11 am amid a turbulent atmosphere, with PTI-backed lawmakers aligned with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), encircling the speaker’s rostrum.

On February 20, SIC Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza announced the party’s intention to nominate its prime minister, as (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) PTI-backed independent members began affiliating with the religious party.

Earlier, on February 13, PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif nominated his younger brother and party president, Shehbaz Sharif, for the position of prime minister, while PML-N senior vice president Maryam Nawaz was nominated for Punjab’s chief ministerial post.

The forthcoming prime ministerial election marks a crucial juncture in Pakistan’s political landscape, as parties manoeuvre to secure leadership roles in the country’s governance structure.

No More Parole For Rape Convict Ram Rahim Without Court Approval

Rape convict Ram Rahim was given a 50-day parole in January

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has raised questions over repeated paroles granted to Dera Sacha Sauda chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim, a rape convict who is supposed to be serving 20 years in prison. The rape convict was given a 50-day parole in January, it was his seventh parole in almost 10 months and ninth in the last four years.

The high court has directed the Haryana government to ensure the surrender of Ram Rahim on March 10, the day his parole is supposed to end and has ordered the state government to request the court’s permission to grant parole to Ram Rahim the next time.

Besides the setback, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered the state government to provide information as to how many people have been given payroll in this manner. The court was hearing a petition filed by SGPC.

Ram Rahim was given parole on three occasions and was out of jail for 91 days. He was released for 21 days in November, 30 days in July, and 40 days in January – to attend former Dera chief Shah Satnam’s birth anniversary. The frequent paroles/furloughs were questioned by the court and the state government has been asked to provide information on how many prisoners applied for parole and how many applications were accepted by them.

The high court also sought answers from the Haryana government over benefits given to the rape convict and how many prisoners received similar treatment.

Ram Rahim Singh was convicted by a special CBI court in Haryana’s Panchkula in August 2017 for raping two women.

There’s a pattern behind granting paroles to him and it usually happens during state elections or local body polls. Dera followers, and particularly those of Ram Rahim Singh, are influential in Punjab’s Malwa region, with their votes seen as key in deciding parliamentary and legislative elections. The Malwa region has 69 constituencies – over half of the Punjab Assembly’s 117 seats.

Dera followers – who number in the crores and have been relatively subdued since Rahim Singh was jailed – are widely seen as voting per diktats from sect leaders.

In February 2022, the Dera chief was given a 21-day parole just days ahead of the Punjab Assembly election. The furlough was challenged in the Punjab and High Court. The petitioner said the order of furlough is “unwarranted, illegal, untenable”.

A few months later in June 2022, he was out of jail for 30 days in the middle of the Haryana Municipal elections. Four months later in October, he was out again for 40 days before a by-election to Haryana’s Adampur seat.

"Even If You Are Rohit Or Virat…": WC Winner On Domestic Cricket Mandate

Member of the 1983 World Cup-winning team Kirti Azad on Thursday backed the BCCI’s directive for cricketers to play Ranji Trophy, saying it’s a good move and the rule should be applicable to every India team player, including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The out-of-favour duo of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were excluded from the list of centrally-contracted players after they ignored the directive to play Ranji Trophy. “It (directive) is a very good move. Everybody should be playing Ranji Trophy cricket, but currently the emphasis is on the IPL. It is good, it is entertaining but the real cricket is the (five) days’ cricket. Playing in domestic cricket is good, it keeps you in touch.

“But whenever you are free, even if you’re a Rohit Sharma or a Virat Kohli, you should go back and play domestic cricket for the state. That (state) gave you the opportunity to be a player, get selected and then play for the country.

He felt that penalising just Ishan and Iyer wasn’t right.

“Just to penalise the two is not correct, I think everybody should be penalised. Everybody should be seen with the same mirror,” Azad told PTI Video.

Azad declined to comment on whether this was the potential end of the road for Ishan and Iyer after their names were excluded from the list of centrally-contracted players.

“My question is, are they playing enough domestic cricket? They are playing T20 cricket, nowadays and every other state has a T20 cricket league. Back in the days when we were starting our careers, players like Bishan Singh Bedi, Madan Lal, Surinder Amarnath, Mohinder Amarnath, Chetan Chauhan, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Karsan Ghavri played alongside youngsters like me and Ravi Shastri.

“All these senior Test team players would play for their sides, would play for the pride of their state which seems missing in the youngsters nowadays,” he added.

He questioned why India players had issues playing domestic cricket while England cricketers willingly played county cricket when not in the national side.

“Look at county cricket; there are 20-plus counties and there are numerous three-day and four-day games along with T20 cricket, but every player is involved there. If a player is left out of the Test squad, then he returns to play for his county.

“So why can’t we have our players playing those domestic matches, that’s the big question,” he added.

He praised players like Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan for finding the balance between T20 cricket for their IPL teams and playing Ranji Trophy.

“There are players like Jurel, Sarfaraz who do play T20 cricket but, at the end of the day, are also representing their states in the Ranji trophy. The bowlers also get into the rhythm of bowling longer spells when they regularly play domestic cricket. It (Ranji) is not a form of slam-bang and thank you,” he said.

Turkey Says Gaza Aid Incident 'Crime Against Humanity'

More than 100 people were killed after Israel opened fire at crowd near aid truck.

Istanbul:

Turkey on Thursday accused Israel of “another crime against humanity” after the deaths of dozens of people in a scramble for food aid in war-torn Gaza.

“Israel has added another crime to its crimes against humanity,” the Turkish foreign ministry said.

“The fact that Israel, which has condemned Gazans to famine, this time targets innocent civilians in a queue for humanitarian aid, is evidence that (Israel) aims consciously and collectively to destroy the Palestinian people”, it added.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said the incident killed 104 people and wounded more than 750 others in a pre-dawn “massacre” in Gaza City.

The Israeli military said a “stampede” occurred when thousands of Gazans surrounded a convoy of 30 aid trucks, leading to dozens of deaths and injuries, including some who were run over by the lorries.

An Israeli source acknowledged troops had opened fire on the crowd, believing it “posed a threat”.

The looting of aid trucks had previously occurred in northern Gaza, where residents have taken to eating animal fodder and even leaves to try to stave off starvation.

Aid groups are warning of looming famine after nearly five months of war.

The war began on October 7 with an unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel that resulted in the deaths of around 1,160 people, mostly civilians, according to official Israeli figures.

Militants also took about 250 hostages, 130 of whom remain in Gaza, including 31 Israel says are presumed dead.

Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed 30,035 people, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run Gaza’s health ministry.
