'Franchise Cricket Has Surpassed Test Cricket': Ex-Ind Star's Blunt View

In the past decade or so, the franchise cricket has definitely impacted the international circuit with many players choosing to play the cash-rich tournaments rather than being on national duty. At times, players with a national team contract don’t hesitate from leaving their side’s game for playing in events like the Indian Premier League or the Big Bash League. Reacting to a user’s query regarding the comparison between franchise cricket and Test cricket, former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad came out with a blunt reply.

The user asked the question as South Africa named seven uncapped players in their Test squad for New Zealand. More and more newcomers have been included in the squad as the senior players will be missing the series due to SA20 — a T20 franchise cricket tournament in South Africa.

“What is your take on SA sending third grade teams to NZ tests? Have tests become luxury?” asked the user.

“Sets a very bad precedent. Sad that it has reached this state where Franchise cricket has surpassed Test cricket in priority . Hope this doesn’t become the way forward,” replied Prasad.

Only two of the players who were in South Africa’s Test win over India on Thursday are in a 14-man squad for the two Tests in New Zealand in February.

Cricket South Africa on Saturday named a squad which includes a new captain in left-handed opening batsman Neil Brand.

Batsman Keegan Petersen and David Bedingham are the only players who were part of South Africa’s innings win in the first Test against India in Centurion. Due to a ruling by Cricket South Africa, no players contracted to franchises in the SA20 competition, which overlaps with the Tests, were eligible for selection.

Despite having to travel with a makeshift squad, Test coach Shukri Conrad said he was confident that the team would be competitive.

The early announcement of the touring party appeared to end speculation that opening batsman Dean Elgar might be persuaded to delay his retirement from international cricket beyond the second Test at Newlands in Cape Town, starting on Wednesday.

Elgar was named man of the match in the first Test against India after scoring 185 in South Africa’s only innings. He will lead the team in the second Test following an injury to Temba Bavuma.

South African squad for New Zealand Tests: Neil Brand (captain), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin (wicketkeeper), Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, Khaya Zondo.

War With South Korea Becoming Reality Because Of US, Says Kim Jong Un

Kim said North Korea needs to “sharpen the sword” to protect itself.

Seoul:

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told the country’s military commanders the most powerful means must be mobilized to destroy the United States and South Korea if they choose military confrontation, state media reported on Monday.

Kim said the danger of an armed confrontation on the Korean peninsula is fast becoming a reality because of hostile maneuvers by the enemies including the United States, requiring the country to “sharpen the sword” to protect itself.

“If they choose military confrontation and set the fire, we must mobilize all the most powerful means … to deal a crushing blow and completely destroy them,” KCNA state news agency quoted Kim as saying.

Kim hosted senior military leaders on Sunday at the ruling Workers’ Party headquarters to congratulate them on the accomplishments made in 2023, KCNA said.

In separate reports, KCNA said Kim hosted a reception for senior members of the ruling party and attended a late night concert celebrating the new year.

"Something Not Right…": Prasad On Fan's "Chokers" Query For Team India

Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad recently summed up the Rohit Sharma-led side bitter-sweet 2023 in international cricket. Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Prasad pointed out how India dominated other team during the recently concluded World Cup on home soil, but fell on the final hurdle, losing the final to Australia. Prasad also rued India’s defeat in the World Test Championship (WTC) final to the same opponents. It’s been more than a decade since India last won an ICC trophy, and a fan asked Prasad whether the Indian team is the “new chokers of world cricket”.

While highlighting India’s back-to-back Test series wins in Australia, Prasad refused to give the team the “chokers” tag. However, with India’s ICC title drought extending for a further year, Prasad feels there is something wrong with Indian cricket.

“Sir Do You also Think That Team India Has become New CHOKERS of World Cricket ?? as we have Just Lost 10th Consecutive ICC Knockout in last 10 Years,” the fan asked Prasad.

Prasad replied, saying: “Chokers not, we have won 2 Test series against Australia in Australia, the last one in 2020-21 after 36 all ou, I consider as one of India’s greatest especially with more than half first choice players missing. But there is certainly something not right about not winning any major tournament in 11 years.”

India last won a major ICC tournament back in 2013 – the ICC Champions Trophy. In 2023, Rohit and his men reached the final of ICC Cricket World Cup at home.

They reached the finals of the 2019-21 and 2021-23 ICC World Test Championship, but have failed to win any of these tournaments.

They also lost the 2017 Champions Trophy final to Pakistan.

Vegetarian’s night out turns sour: Hanamkonda diner served chicken soup in a shocking mix-up

Hanamkonda: A night out with friends turned into a distressing experience for M Santhosh, a resident of Srinagar Colony, at a bar and restaurant in Naimnagar on Thursday. Expecting a vegetarian hot and sour soup, Santhosh was shocked when he received a bowl of chicken hot and sour soup instead.

The confusion arose when Santhosh, a pure vegetarian, questioned the stewards about the soup’s content. Initially, they claimed the pieces were soya, but a direct inquiry with the chef revealed the truth—a mix-up had occurred, and Santhosh had been served a non-vegetarian dish instead.

Expressing deep disappointment, Santhosh lamented the lackadaisical attitude of the restaurant’s management towards this grave error. “For a pure vegetarian person like me, it was very shocking for such bad treatment,” he shared, highlighting the distress caused by the incident.

Adding to his dismay, Santhosh discovered that many restaurants cook both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items in the same pans, raising concerns about cross-contamination for those with dietary restrictions.

Urging authorities to step in, Santhosh called for stringent action against such practices to safeguard the sentiments of vegetarians.

Santhosh took to social media to draw attention from the District Collector Sikta Patnaik to this issue, hoping to spark awareness and initiate changes in how restaurants handle vegetarian and non-vegetarian preparations. He said that he had lodged a complaint with the officials concerned on Friday.

Rafael Nadal To Play Ex-US Open Champion Dominic Thiem In Comeback Match

Rafael Nadal will face former US Open champion Dominic Thiem in the first round of the Brisbane International in a tough return to the ATP Tour after almost a year off due to injury. Thiem, a former world number three who was beaten by Nadal in the 2018 and 2019 French Open finals, battled through two tough qualifying rounds to make the main draw. Like Nadal, he has also struggled with injury and fell to 352 in the world in 2022 following a right wrist tear. He is currently ranked 98.

The two men have played 15 times, with Nadal winning nine and Thiem six. However, the Austrian has won their past two encounters at the ATP Tour Finals in 2020 and the Australian Open the same year. They will play on Tuesday.

Nadal also left the door ajar to continue playing after the 2024 season, but conceded there was “a high percentage” that he was on his last trip as a player to Australia.

Speaking ahead of his comeback from a 12-month injury absence at the season-opening Brisbane International, the 37-year-old Spaniard said he did not know for sure what the future held.

“The problem about saying that’s going to be my last season is I can’t predict what’s going on 100 percent in the future,” he said.

“That’s why I say ‘probably’. It’s obvious it’s a high percentage that it’s going to be my last time playing here in Australia.

“But if I am here next year, don’t tell me, ‘You said it was going to be your last season’, because I didn’t say it.

“You never know what’s going on, you know? I can’t predict how I’m going to be in the next six months. I can’t predict if my body will allow me to enjoy tennis as much as I enjoyed the past 20 years.

“It’s not an easy decision, but I know inside myself that it is a high percentage that it’s going to be my last one.”

The 22-time Grand Slam champion said that the last year, with surgery for a hip injury, had been tough and he contemplated quitting at one point during his recovery.

Future ‘unpredictable’

But he said he had never lost his love for the sport, which motivated him to keep going.

“Of course I was asking myself that (about retirement), but at some point I decided to keep going. I had the determination to keep going.”

Nadal, who has been sidelined since injuring his hip at the 2023 Australian Open, begins his singles comeback against a qualifier in the first round in Brisbane.

He will make a low-key return later Sunday when he plays doubles.

Asked whether he identified with Naomi Osaka, who on Saturday admitted she had fallen out of love with tennis during her break from the tour, Nadal said that was not the case for him.

“She got tired or lost a little bit of motivation for the game,” he said.

“That never happened to me. I had to be away because my body was not able to keep going.”

Nadal said the long absence had allowed his body to heal and he no longer woke up every morning in pain, but he had no expectations heading into the new season and would take it week-by-week.

“Competing is different than practising, but in terms of practising with the guys here, I am quite happy because I feel competitive against the players that I played in practice,” he said.

“Of course I don’t have the expectations that I used to have in the past.

“It’s obvious, no? It’s one year (away). It’s surgery. For me it is a little bit unpredictable how things are going to be.”

David Warner announces retirement from ODI cricket, leaves door open for Champions Trophy 2025 return

Sydney: Australian opener David Warner announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday, just a couple of days ahead of his farewell Test match against Pakistan at his home arena of Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which will start from Wednesday.

The two-time Cricket World Cup winner made the announcement on the morning of New Year’s Day. The left-handed opener compiled 6,932 runs in 161 ODIs at an average of 45.30, at a strike rate of 97.26. Warner has also registered 22 centuries and 33 fifties in the format, with the best score of 179.

Often stepping up at global tournaments, Warner also bows out with 1,527 ICC Cricket World Cup runs, scored at an average of 56.55, at a rate better than a run a ball. Only five men’s batters stand above him on the all-time World Cup run tally, including compatriot Ricky Ponting (1743). Warner has six centuries and five half-centuries in his World Cup career.

“I have got to give back to the family,” Warner said during his announcement as quoted by ICC.

“That (ODI retirement) was something I had said through the World Cup, get through that and winning that in India is a massive achievement.” Warner has retired on a high as not only he won the World Cup this year, but he also scored 535 runs in 11 matches at an average of 48.63 and a strike rate of above 108, with two centuries and two fifties. He ended up as the sixth-highest run-scorer in the tournament.

There was a caveat to Warner’s announcement however, with the veteran open to a return for the 2025 Champions Trophy should he be required.

“I know there is a Champions Trophy coming up and if I am playing decent cricket still in two years’ time and they need someone, I am going to be available,” said Warner.

Warner will still be available to play T20Is, with the ICC T20 World Cup coming this year in June in the West Indies and the USA.

The 37-year-old entered the Australia set-up as a limited-overs specialist, debuting for the team in T20I cricket in January 2009 against South Africa before playing a first-class match, smashing 89 in 43 balls with seven fours and six sixes. He made his ODI debut against the same opposition a week later, before making a half-century in his second outing in the format.

US Sinks 3 Ships, Kills 10 In Response To Houthi Red Sea Attack

US Sinks 3 Ships, Kills 10 In Response To Houthi Red Sea Attack

The naval battle underlines the risk of a regional escalation in fighting.

Copenhagen/Dubai/Cairo:

US helicopters repelled an attack by Iran-backed Houthi militants on a Maersk container vessel in the Red Sea, sinking three ships and killing 10 militants, according to accounts by American, Maersk, and Houthi officials on Sunday.

The naval battle occurred around 0330 GMT on Sunday as the attackers sought to board the Singapore-flagged Maersk Hangzhou, Maersk and US Central Command (CENTCOM) said. Helicopters from the USS Eisenhower and USS Gravely joined the ship’s security team in repelling the attackers after receiving a distress call, CENTCOM said.

Maersk said it was pausing all sailing through the Red Sea for 48 hours after the attack.

A spokesman for the Houthis said the group carried out the attack because the ship’s crew refused to heed warning calls. He said 10 Houthi naval personnel were “dead and missing” after their boats were attacked by US forces in the Red Sea.

The naval battle underlines the risk of a regional escalation in fighting as Israel continues with its relentless bombing campaign following a Hamas surprise cross-border attack on Israeli towns on October 7 that left 1,200 dead, and took 240 hostages. Israel’s air and artillery bombardment has killed more than 21,800 people, according to Gazan health authorities.

Yemen’s Houthis have been targeting vessels in the Red Sea since November to show their support for Hamas, prompting major shipping companies to take the longer and costlier route around the Africa’s Cape of Good Hope rather than through the Suez Canal.

The Red Sea is the entry point for ships using the Suez Canal, which handles about 12% of global trade and vital for the movement of goods between Asia and Europe.

The United States launched Operation Prosperity Guardian on December 19, saying more than 20 countries had agreed to participate in the efforts to safeguard ships in Red Sea waters near Yemen.

Maersk, one of the world’s top cargo shippers, said on December 24 it would resume sailing through the Red Sea. However, attacks have continued and US allies have proven reluctant to commit to the coalition, with nearly half not declaring their presence publicly.

The botched Houthi boarding operation was the second attack on the Maersk Hangzhou in as many days. The ship, which is carrying 14,000 containers en route from Singapore, was on Saturday hit by a missile about 55 nautical miles southwest of Al Hodeidah, Yemen.

The shipping company added that the crew of the Maersk Hangzhou crew was safe and there was no indication of fire onboard the vessel, which continued its journey north toward the Suez Canal.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby declined to say what options the US is considering when asked on ABC’s “Good Morning America” if Washington would consider a preemptive strike on the Houthis.

“We have made it clear publicly to the Houthis, we’ve made it clear privately to our allies and partners in the region, that we take these threats seriously.”

Writing in the Daily Telegraph newspaper, British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said: “We are willing to take direct action, and we won’t hesitate to take further action to deter threats to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.”

“The Houthis should be under no misunderstanding: we are committed to holding malign actors accountable for unlawful seizures and attacks,” he said.

Earlier on Sunday, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said he had told Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in a call that Iran should help stop the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

The BIMCO shipping association condemned the attacks and thanked those states involved in repelling them.

“We are thankful to US, French, and UK efforts so far and hope even more states will support the coalition with naval assets or other impactful means including diplomatic pressure on the Houthis and their sponsors,” Jakob Larsen, BIMCO’s head of maritime safety and security, told Reuters.

After 60-Ft Bridge And Train Engine, Entire Pond 'Stolen' In Bihar

After 60-Ft Bridge And Train Engine, Entire Pond 'Stolen' In Bihar

Land mafia are accused of filling the pond to take over the land.

Patna:

After a bridge and a train engine, Bihar’s list of bizarre thefts continued with an entire pond being “stolen”. The pond vanished and had a hut built on it, leaving the locals baffled in Darbhanga district.

The surprise appearance of a hut did prompt them to inform the cops, but the land mafia – who are accused of filling the pond to take over the land – had fled by the time the police arrived.

Locals suggest the pond was publicly-owned and even maintained for fishing and other activities. But the rising prices of land in Darbhanga made the mafia set their eyes on the water body.

The locals had complained to the authorities when the pond-filling started and had led to zonal officials briefly stopping the work and making some seizures. But the mafia carried out the levelling work secretly in the dark – until the pond was entirely gone.

“People say the pond was filled with soil within 10-15 days. The work was done only at night. Officials had visited the spot earlier and even seized some items,” said Amit Kumar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).

Bihar has hit the headlines for some of the most bizarre incidents of theft carried out – though not imaginable – by humans.

This includes an entire diesel engine being stolen in November, 2022 – part by part from a railway yard in Begusarai. The thieves had dug a tunnel to the yard and started stealing parts, according to the police. Slowly, they had taken away the entire engine that had come for repairs.

Earlier that year, an entire 60-foot bridge was stolen in Rohtas district. Eight persons including a government officer were arrested and 247 kg iron channels were recovered from the accused. The thieves used JCBs and gas cutters to dismantle it and the bridge disappeared in just three days.
