Sunil Gavaskar Rues "One Bad Day" That Hit Team India Hard In 2023

While the Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams might have lost their last matches of 2023, it is fair to say that the Rohit Sharma-led side and the Harmanpreet Kaur-led sides have had some memorable results in the past 12 months. As we said goodbye to 2023 on Monday, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar analysed the performances of both, the men’s and women’s team. The batting great hailed the women’s team for their historic wins over England and Australia earlier. Under the leadership of Harmanpreet, the women’s team defeated England and Australia in one-off Tests, also outplaying the two best teams in the world.

“I think it’s been a fantastic year for both the men’s and the women’s team, particularly the way the women’s team has performed. Those two Test wins towards the year-end, one against England and one against Australia, both teams against whom the Indian women’s team have had tough times earlier on,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports show ‘Follow the Blues’.

The men’s team, on the other hand, won the Asia Cup as well as the Hangzhou Asian Games gold medal. However, Rohit and his men lost to Australia in both the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup finals.

“That’s been the most exciting aspect of cricket apart from, of course, what we saw in the World Cup. The 10 straight wins, and, then, just that one bad day, which sadly happened to be the finals of the World Cup. So really some exciting times in 2023,” he added.

While the women’s team will take on Australia in third and final ODI of a three-match series on Tuesday, the men’s team will kick off new year with the second Test against South Africa, starting December 3 in Cape Town.

India had lost the first Test to South Africa by an innings and 32 runs, drawing criticism from former players, including Gavaskar.

The 74-year-old highlighted the absence of practice matches as one of the biggest reasons behind the result embarrasing result.

“The reasons are straightforward – you didn’t play any matches here. If you straightaway play Test matches, it doesn’t work out. Yes, you sent the India A team. The India A team should actually come before the tour,” he said on Star Sports.

“You need to play practice matches after coming here. Intra-squad is a joke because would your fast bowlers bowl extremely fast to your batters, would they bowl bouncers, as they would be scared about injuring their batters,” he said.

Iran sends 2nd notice to US, seeking arbitration over Gen. Soleimani assassination

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has sent a second official notice to the US administration, seeking arbitration over the 2020 assassination of Iran’s top anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani in a US drone strike near the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

Tavakkol Habibzadeh, the head of center for Iranian President’s Legal and International Affairs, made the announcement on Monday, saying the second notice was written and sent after the United States failed to respond to the first one on holding negotiations.

The notice demanding arbitration was written based on the Protection of Diplomats Convention, a 1973 United Nations anti-terrorism treaty on the prevention and punishment of crimes against internationally protected persons, including diplomatic agents.

According to Article 13 of the convention, Habibzadeh said, the first notice seeking negotiation is sent to the other party and if it does not respond to it, the second memo is sent to request arbitration.

As per the convention, if no response is provided by the Americans within six months from the date of the request for arbitration, the third step will be taken that is referring the dispute to the International Court of Justice, he further explained.

Habibzadeh said that about a month and a half ago, the Iranian Foreign Ministry sent the second notice to the United States to request arbitration between Tehran and Washington, and that the US administration has until the end of April to respond to it.

General Soleimani, commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and their companions were assassinated in a US drone strike authorized by then-US President Donald Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Two days after the attack, Iraqi lawmakers approved a bill that required the government to end the presence of all foreign military forces led by the US in the country.

Both commanders were highly revered across the Middle East because of their key role in fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

On January 8, 2020, the IRGC targeted the US-run Ain al-Asad base in Iraq’s western province of Anbar with a wave of missile attacks in retaliation for the assassination of General Soleimani.

According to the Pentagon, more than 100 American forces suffered “traumatic brain injuries” during the counterstrike on the base, with the Islamic Republic describing the missile attack on Ain al-Assad as a “first slap.”

Kyiv, Ukraine:

Ukraine said Monday it had foiled a “record” number of Russian drones on the night of New Year’s Eve after a week of escalation in the nearly two-year conflict.

Kyiv also said Russian shelling killed one person on New Year’s Day in the southern Odesa region and another person in Kherson, also in the south.

The barrage came after Russia pounded Ukraine in the last days of 2023, killing 39 people in one of the biggest strikes in the war.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 90 Iranian-made Shahed drones on the last night of the year.

“On New Year’s Eve, the defenders of the sky managed to destroy a record number of enemy attack drones — 87 out of 90,” the air force said.

It said Moscow also launched missiles in the northeastern Kharkiv region, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in the south.

Odesa was shelled on New Year’s Eve, Kyiv said, with emergency services reporting one person killed. A 73-year-old woman was killed in Kherson in shelling.

The drone attacks also targeted the western city of Lviv near the Polish border.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy said a university linked to a Ukrainian nationalist figure and a museum were damaged.

Russia, meanwhile, reported Ukrainian drone attacks on its Belgorod region near the border.

Moscow and Kyiv have escalated attacks in recent days, with an unprecedented Ukrainian attack on the city of Belgorod killing 24 people on Saturday.

US has no reason to stay in Persian Gulf: IRGC Navy cmdr.

Speaking in a ceremony held by IRGC headquarters in Qom on Monday, Admiral Alireza Tangsiri stated that there is no longer any reason for the US presence in the Persian Gulf.

“The daily cost of an aircraft carrier is $6.5 million, a destroyer is $300,000, and a naval combat vessel is $150,000, and today with the strength of faith and help of God Almighty, we have made the presence of such military equipment ineffective in the Persian Gulf region,” the IRGC Navy commander said.

“The cost of building an aircraft carrier is $12.5 billion and a submarine is $7 billion. Thanks to martyrs and Haj Qassem American technologies and equipment have become ineffective, and faith in God ..has reduced the power of the enemies,” he added.

“Today, the youth in this country are powerfully standing against the enemy, and they (Americans) cannot enter and exit the waterways of our country without the permission of our youth,” he further highlighted.

“Today, Iran’s military power has reached such a high level that the Americans and the Arrogant powers are forced to bear such costs, and this power owes too much to the blood of martyrs and Martyr Soleimani,” Adiral Tangsiri continued.

Mental disorder makes Israeli soldiers suffer in wake of Al-Aqsa Storm: Report

Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank

Israeli media have reported a surge in mental health disorder among settlers and soldiers following Operation Al-Aqsa Storm by the Palestinian resistance fighters.

The media quoted Israel’s “emotional first aid service,” which announced there was a spike in demand for psychological treatment among Israelis. The figure has reached 100,000, it said.

Also, Israeli newspaper Maariv said the requests were recorded for various categories and age groups.

Similarly, a recent report by Bloomberg revealed the rapidly increasing number of injuries among Israeli soldiers generates “invisible costs” for the campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The chief of the Disabled Veterans Organization, Edan Kleiman, recently said the number of injuries would probably reach 20,000 if traumatized soldiers are counted. Kleiman said this marks the first time Israeli ranks witnessed such a high number of injuries that must be rehabilitated.

On December 27, 2023, an Israeli soldier who had recently returned from Gaza experienced a night terror episode and reportedly fired his rifle, injuring fellow soldiers in the same room.

Reports of psychological breakdowns among Israelis have been on the rise in the past few months.

The centers dealing with mental health issues are reportedly experiencing a psychological crisis. Such disorders will be long-term for Israelis.

A recent poll conducted by Gallup showed the “mental health of Israelis is worse than ever” in the wake of Al-Aqsa Storm.

The figures showed record-high majorities of Israelis now say they experienced worry, stress, and sadness during much of the previous months. More than a third also report experiencing a lot of anger.

Israel currently holds a record number of 47 in the Gallup index of negative experiences.

India Asks Pak To Release 184 Fishermen Who Have Completed Jail Term

India Asks Pak To Release 184 Fishermen Who Have Completed Jail Term

India made the request in the context of the exchange of lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen.

New Delhi:

India on Monday asked Pakistan to expedite the release and repatriation of 184 Indian fishermen in view of completion of their jail term.

In addition, Islamabad has also been asked to provide immediate consular access to 12 civilian prisoners in Pakistan’s custody, who are believed to be Indian, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

India made the request in the context of the exchange of lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen by both the countries as part of a practice to do so on January 1 and July 1 every calendar year under the framework of a 2008 pact.

India has shared lists of 337 civilian prisoners and 81 fishermen in its custody, who are Pakistani or are believed to be Pakistani.

Similarly, Pakistan has shared lists of 47 civilian prisoners and 184 fishermen in its custody, who are Indian or are believed to be Indian, according to the MEA.

“The government of India has called for early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, missing Indian defence personnel, and fishermen along with their boats, from Pakistan’s custody,” the MEA said.

“In this context, Pakistan was asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 184 Indian fishermen, who have completed their sentence,” it said in a statement.

“In addition, Pakistan has been asked to provide immediate consular access to the remaining 12 civilian prisoners in Pakistan’s custody, who are believed to be Indian,” it said.

The MEA said Pakistan has been requested to ensure the safety, security and welfare of all Indian and believed-to-be Indian civilian prisoners and fishermen, pending their release and repatriation to India.

“India remains committed to addressing, on priority, all humanitarian matters, including those pertaining to prisoners and fishermen in each other’s country,” it said.

“In this context, India has urged Pakistan to expedite necessary action at its end to confirm the nationality status of 65 believed-to-be Pakistani prisoners, including fishermen, whose repatriation is pending for want of nationality confirmation from Pakistan,” it said.

The MEA said as a result of sustained efforts by the government, 2,639 Indian fishermen and 67 Indian civilian prisoners have been repatriated from Pakistan since 2014.

This includes 478 Indian fishermen and nine Indian civilian prisoners who were repatriated from Pakistan in 2023, it said.
