New Delhi:

The Privileges Committee of Lok Sabha will meet next week to examine the issue of suspension of three Congress members from the House during the Winter Session for unruly behaviour.

The Committee, chaired by BJP member Sunil Kumar Singh, at its meeting on January 12 will record oral evidence of Congress members K Jayakumar, Abdul Khaleque and Vijayakumar Vijay Vasanth, who were suspended for creating “grave disorder in the House” on December 18.

During the Winter Session of Parliament, 100 Lok Sabha members from the opposition ranks were suspended from the Lower House for unruly behaviour after they brought placards and raised slogans demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue of breach of Parliament security.

While 97 members were suspended for the remainder of the Winter Session, the suspensions of Mr Jayakumar, Mr Khaleque and Mr Vijayakumar, who had reached the presiding officer’s chair, were referred to the Privileges Committee.

The suspension of the three members will continue till the committee submits its report to the Lok Sabha Speaker.

In the Rajya Sabha, 46 members were suspended during the Winter Session including 11 members whose case was referred to the Privileges Committee of the Upper House.

The Privileges Committee of Rajya Sabha is chaired by Deputy Chairman Harivansh and is yet to convene a meeting to examine the case of suspension of 11 members referred to it.

Opposition members Jebi Mather Hisham, L Hanumanthaiah, Neeraj Dangi, Rajmani Patel, Kumar Ketkar, G C Chandrashekhar (all Congress); Binoy Viswam and Sandosh Kumar P (both CPI), M Mohamed Abdulla (DMK), John Brittas and AA Rahim (both CPI-M) were suspended till the House “has the benefit of the Report of the Committee of Privilege”.

Israel launches fresh attacks on targets in Syria

Syria’s official SANA news agency, citing an unnamed military source, reported that the Israeli enemy launched an aerial attack from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights at around 4:35 a.m. local time (0135 GMT) on Tuesday, targeting some sites on the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

The source added that there were no injuries in the strike, but there were material losses.

Another military official said that Syrian air defenses intercepted and shot down most of the incoming Israeli missiles.

The development came only a few hours after Israeli artillery units shelled areas in Syria’s southwestern province of Dara’a.

The Zionist forces stated in a statement that the attack was in response to several rockets fired from southern Syria into the Golan Heights.

Israel waged the bloody war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian Hamas Resistance movement launched Operation al-Aqsa Storm in the occupied territories in retaliation for the Tel Aviv regime’s incessant crimes against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

Since the start of the aggression, the Tel Aviv regime has killed 21,978 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and injured some 57,700 others.

It has also imposed a “complete siege” on the coastal sliver, cutting off fuel, electricity, food and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Israel frequently targets military positions inside Syria, especially those of Resistance combatants, who have played a key role in helping the Syrian army in its fight against foreign-backed terrorists.

Is India's Most Wanted Masood Azhar Dead? A Fact-Check

Is India's Most Wanted Terrorist Masood Azhar Dead? A Fact-Check

Masood Azhar has been wanted in India for years.

New Delhi:

Masood Azhar, another Pakistani terrorist most wanted in India, has been killed in a bomb blast – or so say several posts now going viral on social media. The unconfirmed photos and video at the heart of these posts come on the heels of similar posts that claimed that gangster Dawood Ibrahim — most wanted in India for decades — died of poisoning. The claims turned out to be fake. Equally fake were the screenshots of Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar “confirming” the “news”.

In case of Masood Azhar — wanted in connection with multiple terror attacks including the 2001 Parliament attack — the claims were made by Twitter handles from Pakistan.

The handles claimed that the Jaish-e-Mohammed chief was killed in a bomb blast in Bahawalpur while returning from a mosque at 5 am. The blast was allegedly carried out by unknown people over personal rivalry.

No mainstream media in Pakistan has reported it.

One of the first to post the photo of the burning car is a handle called Times Algebra. Muzaffarabad news bulletin also used the photo.

But a bit of digging uncovered more.

On 3 November, a Twitter handle named OSINT posted that a police van was targeted in an attack in Dera Ismail Khan, killing 6 people and injuring 25.

But they too, appear to have recycled the photo, which was posted first in 2019 by a handle called Hasnat Ali. The caption said three TikTokers were killed in the explosion.

Masood Azhar has been wanted in India for years. Besides the 2001 attack on Parliament, he also targeted the Ram Janambhoomi temple in Ayodhya in July 2005, and the attack on CRPF personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama in February 2019.

He also orchestrated an assault on the Indian Consulate in Afghanistan’s Mazar-e-Sharif in January 2016.

Explained: Why truck drivers’ strike is spelling disaster for fuel supply and traffic flow

Hyderabad: The start of the New Year has been disastrous for most people. Fuel shortages and congested roads are how people in the country are ringing in 2024. Social media platforms are filled with photos and videos of people waiting in long queues at petrol pumps. #TruckDriversProtest has thousands of tweets on X.

Are you curious as to what precisely is resulting in a petrol shortage at fuel stations and utter chaos on the roads? The truck drivers’ protest against the new hit-and-run law.

About 2,000 petrol pumps, mostly in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab and some in Hyderabad, have run out of fuel stocks as the strike by some truckers’ associations entered the second day on Tuesday.

What is the truck drivers’ strike?
Some truck, bus and tanker operators began a three-day strike on Monday against the stringent jail and fine regulations under the new criminal law Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for hit-and-run cases.

The new law, which replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code, provides for a jail of up to 10 years and/or a fine of Rs 7 lakh for serious road accidents due to negligent driving and where drivers run away without informing the police.

Truckers said most truck drivers choose to run away even in minor accidents as they otherwise will have to face mob justice and risk of life. While the mobs typically go unpunished, to impose stringent punishment on drivers was unfair, they said.

There are about 1 lakh trucks that ferry petrol and diesel from oil company depots to petrol pumps.

What else will be affected?
Essential supplies of vegetables, fruits and milk too may get affected if the three-day strike is extended or a pan-India movement is launched. LPG truck movement too has been impacted. However, there are no complaints on LPG shortage just yet.

What next?
The All India Motor Transport Association — the umbrella body of truck operators — has so far not given a nationwide strike call and its representatives will be meeting home ministry officials to raise their concerns around BNS.

Japan Airlines plane catches fire on runway of Tokyo’s Haneda

The plane was identified by a Japan Airlines spokesperson as flight 516, traveling from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido to Haneda, according to Reuters.

Haneda is one of Japan’s busiest airports.

Japan Airlines said all 379 people on board the burning aircraft, both passengers and crew members, were evacuated.

Video footage broadcast live on public broadcaster NHK showed fire crews working to put out the blaze.

The Japanese Coast Guard said it was investigating the cause of the incident, suggesting the possibility that one of its own aircrafts collided with the passenger jet.

“It’s not clear if there was a collision. But it is certain that our plane is involved,” a Coast Guard official told the French AFP news agency.

Meanwhile, Japan’s broadcaster NHK reported that five people who were onboard the Japan Coast Guard plane which likely collided with the passenger jet were unaccounted for.

Japan faces ‘race against time’ to find quake survivors as death toll rises

Japan’s prime minister has said the country is facing a “race against time” to rescue quake survivors, after a powerful earthquake struck western Japan on New Year’s Day, reportedly killing more than 48 people.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency the 7.6-magnitude quake, hit Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu on Monday, triggered tsunami waves more than a meter high, trapped people under collapsed buildings, caused a major fire, and destroyed roads.

“Very extensive damage has been confirmed, including numerous casualties, building collapses, and fires,” Fumio Kishida said during an emergency disaster meeting.

“We have to race against time to search for and rescue victims of the disaster,” he added.

“We must rescue them as quickly as possible, especially those who are trapped under collapsed structures,” Kishida said.

Ishikawa Governor Hiroshi Hase wrote in a social media post that roads have been cut in widespread areas by landslides or cracking, while in the port of Suzu “multiple” vessels had capsized.

An unnamed official in Ishikawa Prefecture told AFP on Tuesday that the death toll reached 48.

On Monday, waves at least 1.2 meters high hit Wajima, and a series of smaller tsunamis were reported elsewhere.

Warnings of much larger waves proved unfounded and on Tuesday Japan lifted all tsunami warnings.

The region experienced freezing temperatures overnight, as 45,000 households were left without electricity and numerous cities are grappling with water shortages.

A total of 62,000 people had been ordered to evacuate, according to the fire and disaster management agency after quakes as large as 5.6 were reported on Tuesday morning.

Defense Minister Minoru Kihara announced that 1,000 military personnel are currently gearing up to deploy to the region, with an additional 8,500 troops on standby. Furthermore, approximately 20 military aircraft have been dispatched to conduct aerial assessments of the damage.

Monday’s quake shook apartments in the capital Tokyo about 300 kilometers away.

Several major highways were closed around the epicenter, Japan’s road operator said, and bullet train services from Tokyo were also suspended.

Rescue efforts have been hindered by badly damaged and blocked roads, and a local airport was shut down due to runway cracks.

An official from Japan’s Nuclear Regulatory Agency said that after Monday’s quake, there were no signs of abnormalities at any radioactivity monitoring stations at the Shika nuclear power plant in Ishikawa.

Japan experiences hundreds of earthquakes every year and the vast majority cause no damage. However, a massive 9.0-magnitude undersea quake off northeastern Japan in 2011 triggered a tsunami and left around 18,500 people dead or missing.

It also swamped the Fukushima atomic plant, causing one of the world’s worst nuclear disasters.

The ongoing cleanup activities near the Fukushima plant are still in their early stages. However, last summer, the government’s decision to release treated radioactive wastewater into the ocean sparked alarm in China and South Korea.
