TPCC passes resolution urging Sonia Gandhi to contest from Telangana

Hyderabad: The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) passed an unanimous resolution, urging former AICC president Sonia Gandhi to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Telangana. The party, led by TPCC president and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, aims to secure victory in at least 12 out of the 17 Parliamentary constituencies in the upcoming polls.

During an extended executive body meeting held at Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday, the TPCC thanked AICC Telangana in-charge Deepa Dasmunshi and former AICC Telangana in-charge Manikrao Thakre for their efforts in bringing the Congress to power in the State. The party also thanked the people of Telangana for electing the Congress to power and the Congress cadre for their dedicated efforts in ensuring the party’s victory in the recent Assembly elections.

Apart from acknowledging the steps taken by the Congress government in the past month, the TPCC made decisions, including the formation of Indiramma Committees at the village level and seeking public feedback on the State governance.

TPCC meetings chaired by Revanth Reddy on the upcoming Parliament elections were scheduled on January 8 and 9, involving Congress leaders from the erstwhile 10 districts. Additional consultations with in-charge Ministers and senior leaders from all Parliamentary constituencies are set for January 11, 12, and 13. After the Sankranti festival, constituency-wise reviews and field visits were being planned.

During the meeting, Revanth Reddy assured that the six guarantees made to the people would be implemented within the stipulated time. He emphasised the responsibility to recognise and place those who worked hard for the party promptly. AICC secretaries were compiling a list of government nominated posts and suitable leaders who contributed to the recent victory.

He asserted that the TPCC’s target was to secure at least 12 of total 17 Lok Sabha seats in the State. Responding to BJP State president G Kishan Reddy’s call for a CBI inquiry into the Kaleshwaram project, Revanth Reddy accused the BJP and BRS of looting Telangana together in the name of the project. He said the Congress government was committed to conduct a judicial inquiry into alleged corruption in the Kaleshwaram project.

Over 100 Dead In Twin Blasts Near Iran Top General Qassem Soleimani's Grave

Hundreds of Iranians had gathered to mark the anniversary of Soleimani’s death

Dubai:

Two explosions caused by ‘terrorist attacks’ killed more than 100 people and wounded scores at a ceremony in Iran to commemorate top commander Qassem Soleimani who was killed by a US drone in 2020, Iranian officials said on Wednesday.

Iranian state television reported a first and then a second blast during an anniversary event at the cemetery where Soleimani is buried in the southeastern city of Kerman.

An unnamed official told the state news agency IRNA that “Two explosive devices planted along the road leading to Kerman’s Martyrs’ Cemetery were detonated remotely by terrorists”.

Babak Yektaparast, a spokesperson for Iran’s emergency services, was reported as saying 73 people had been killed and 170 injured. State television said later that at least 100 people had been killed.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Videos aired by Iranian media showed dozens of bodies strewn around with some bystanders trying to attend to survivors and others hurrying to leave the blast area.

“A terrible sound was heard there, despite all the security and safety measures. We are still investigating,” Reza Fallah, head of the Kerman Red Crescent Society, told state television.

Red Crescent rescuers tended to wounded people at the ceremony, where hundreds of Iranians had gathered to mark the anniversary of Soleimani’s death. Some Iranian news agencies said the number of wounded people was much higher.

“We are now evacuating the wounded and injured in the area. The crowd is huge and the job is quite hard all the paths to there are blocked,” Fallah said.

The US assassination of Soleimani in a drone attack at Baghdad airport and Tehran’s retaliation by attacking two Iraq military bases that house US troops brought the United States and Iran close to full-blown conflict in 2020.

As chief commander of the elite Quds force, the overseas arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Soleimani ran clandestine operations in foreign countries and was a key figure in Iran’s long-standing campaign to drive US forces out of the Middle East.

Tensions between Iran and Israel, along with its ally the United States, have reached a new high over Israel’s war on Iranian-backed Hamas militants in Gaza in retaliation for their Oct. 7 rampage through southern Israel.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militia have attacked ships they say have links to Israel in the entrance to the Red Sea, one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

US forces have come under attack by Iran-backed militants in Iraq and Syria over Washington’s backing of Israel and have carried out their own retaliatory air strikes.

On Monday an Israeli airstrike killed a senior leader of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in Syria.

Iran has in the past blamed Israel for attacks on individual people or places within its borders – claims which Israel has neither confirmed nor denied – but there was no indication of any foreign involvement in the explosions at Wednesday’s ceremony.

General strike held in West Bank to mourn killing of top Hamas figure

Palestinians across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem al-Quds have held a general strike to mourn the assassination of the deputy head of Hamas politburo Saleh al-Arouri.

All businesses and services, including shops, banks, commercial facilities and public institutions were closed just a day after Israel killed al-Arouri in a drone strike in a building in al-Musharrafieh district in southern Beirut.

The Tel Aviv regime has not officially claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, which has already drawn widespread calls for protest rallies in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Partial cancellations also disrupted the transport activity in the West Bank.

“It was a cowardly crime, and especially here in Hebron it is sad, this city embraced Arouri for a long time. This strike demonstrates people’s support for the resistance and their feelings against the occupation’s crimes in Gaza and in the West Bank,” a political activist from al-Khalil (Hebron) told the London-based Middle East Eye website.

“What happened shows that the occupation failed and did not achieve any success in Gaza, forcing them to go into Beirut instead. It was an organized war crime in our beloved Lebanon. We call on everyone all over the world to hold Israel accountable in international courts,” he added.

The Israeli regime waged the war on Gaza on October 7 after Hamas carried out the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime’s atrocities against Palestinians.

Since the start of the US-backed offensive, the Israeli regime has killed at least 22,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured more than 57,000 others. Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under the rubble.

“The occupation thinks that by killing prominent figures such as Arouri they are killing Palestinians and their spirits but they do not know that thousands will come following Arouri and that as long as there is occupation there will be resistance,” Majda Tumaisa, also from Hebron, said.

According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the strike was organized by Palestinian national and Islamic groups, labor unions, and civil society organizations in solidarity with the people of Gaza.

The Israeli regime has been waging sporadic attacks on southern Lebanon since October 7, but Tuesday’s drone strike marks the first time that the Tel Aviv regime has targeted the Lebanese capital since the 2006 war.
