New Delhi:

Work from Home (WFH) or Part-time job scams contribute to the highest number of cyber crimes reported in the country followed by illegal lending apps in the year 2023, as per the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), a part of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of I4C Rajesh Kumar on Wednesday addressed the Annual Press Conference at the media center.

Mr Kumar said that scamsters majorly approach victims through digital advertisements, channels of online messengers, and bulk SMS.

“We request people to avoid getting into such scams. We keep banning and tapping such fraudsters whenever it gets reported,” he said.

He added that illegal lending apps are the second biggest tool used by scamsters to target people. These apps largely operate in countries like China, Cambodia, Myanmar, and others. Indian government keeps reporting to regard cybercriminals to other governments of other countries.

“We have blocked 595 apps such apps that were involved in suspicious activities. We have also whitelisted 395 instant loan apps by RBI. Reporting of suspicious apps to Google and Facebook. Flagging of mule accounts to Banks and Fintech. Publishing of suspicious apps on Cyber Dost social media handles,” he said.

The third largest source of cyber fraud is Customer Care Number and Android malware. In this fake customer care numbers are used or Android malware is installed to steal credentials like OTPs.

He added that impersonation and sextortion are the other two ways that are widely used by scamsters.

“WFH is the biggest fraud reported to agencies while sextortion largely gets operated from Mewat. It is underreported as victims avoid complaining due to various reasons. This year around 19,000 cases of sextortion were reported,” he said.

Development work took backseat after Jagan became Chief Minister: Chandrababu Naidu

Amaravati: Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP national president, Chandrababu Naidu, on Wednesday attacked Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, alleging that developmental work has completely taken a backseat since he became the CM.

Had Jagan not entered politics, the state would not have suffered so much damage, Chandrababu Naidu remarked at the party headquarters here.

Several senior YSRCP leaders, like C. Ramachandraiah, Dwarakanath Reddy and Dadi Veerabhadra Rao, along with leaders from Anantapur, Bapatla, Chirala and Parvathipuram, joined the TDP in the presence of Chandrababu.

Welcoming all of them into the TDP fold, the party supremo said that Jagan totally destroyed Polavaram and the capital city of Amaravathi. The former chief minister regretted that development had completely taken a backseat after Jagan became the chief minister, and he polluted politics.

Generally, the MLAs, after winning the polls, work hard for the welfare of the people but the YSRCP MLAs have concentrated on how to loot the State, Chandrababu alleged. “I have been in politics for 45 years and I became an MLA for the first time in 1978. In my political career, Jagan is the most substandard Chief Minister I have ever seen, as the whole state is witnessing mafias and robberies,” Chandrababu stated.

Expressing serious concern that Jagan has borrowed a “whopping Rs 12 lakh crore” after he became the Chief Minister, the TDP national president said that all the systems, including roads, agriculture, education and health, have been damaged. “Illegal cases are being foisted against the persons who raise their voice against the atrocities of the ruling party leaders,” he said.

While the people are detesting the ruling party MLAs, Jagan is now replacing them, he said and asked what the intelligence wing has been doing all these years if the MLAs are resorting to such activities. “Did you ever question the MLAs who had committed such blunders?” Chandrababu questioned Jagan.

Pointing out that all the 100 welfare schemes that were implemented by the TDP regime were cancelled by this government, Chandrababu said that even the Rs 15 lakh each financial assistance extended by the TDP regime for pursuing further studies was withdrawn.

Observing that the TDP founder, the late NT Rama Rao, has given a completely new definition for politics, Chandrababu said that the entire Telugu community will remember him for generations.

“The late NTR entered politics after he attained 60 years of age and he never aspired for positions or craved for money. He only wanted to serve society and always followed ethics in politics,” Chandrababu Naidu said. This Chief Minister, thinking that he would be in the post, permanently built a huge palace with Rs 500 crore, damaging the beautiful Rishikonda, he stated.

“This person who criticised when a small road was built for my residence has constructed a four-lane road for his house,” the former chief minister said, referring to Jagan. Courts have pulled up this government when the Chief Minister has claimed to shift the capital to Visakhapatnam, he said.

Iran’s foreign minister says the country has started taking “legal measures” through the United Nations after two terror blasts killed and injured hundreds of people in the southwestern city of Kerman.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian announced the information in a post on X, former Twitter, on Wednesday, hours after the explosions that took place near the burial site of Iran’s former senior anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.

“Based on initial information obtained from official sources, the Foreign Ministry has begun [taking] its prompt legal and international measures through the United Nations,” the top diplomat wrote.

The explosions left 103 people dead and 211 more injured.

According to IRNA, the first blast occurred some 700 meters from General Soleimani’s burial place, and the second one about one kilometer away.

The first explosion occurred at 14:50 local time. The second one took place 10 minutes later, ISNA quoted Kerman Mayor Saeed Tabrizi as saying.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has noted that those who had ordered and carried out the twin attacks would definitely face a fitting punishment and a harsh response.

President Ebrahim Raeisi has also vowed that those behind the “indiscriminate and cowardly” attacks would soon be brought to justice.

Amir-Abdollahian considered the tragedy to be a source of “sorrow and anguish.”

He condoled with the survivors and the Iranian nation over the incidents, and wished the wounded “expedient recovery.”

"No Genocide": US Dismisses South Africa's Case Against Israel At UN Court

'No Genocide': US Criticises South Africa For Bringing Israel Case To UN Court

“We have not at this point seen acts that constitute genocide,” US official said.

Washington:

The United States on Wednesday criticized South Africa for bringing a genocide case against Israel before the UN’s top court, rejecting accusations against its ally over the war in Gaza.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague will next week hold hearings on a filing by South Africa that alleges “genocidal acts against the people in Gaza” and seeks to order Israel to end the military operation.

“We don’t think it’s a productive step,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said of the South African submission.

“We have not at this point seen acts that constitute genocide,” Miller told reporters.

“Genocide is, of course, a heinous atrocity,” he said. “Those are allegations that should not make be made lightly.”

Israel has angrily rejected the accusation, with the foreign ministry calling it “blood libel,” a reference to ancient anti-Semitic conspiracies.

South Africa has often criticized Israel and alleged parallels to its own history of apartheid.

In The Hague application, South Africa says that Israel has been acting “with the requisite specific intent… to destroy Palestinians in Gaza as part of the broader Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group.”

Palestinian Hamas militants infiltrated Israel on October 7 and killed some 1,140 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

In response to the deadliest attack in its history, Israel launched a relentless offensive that has reduced vast swathes of Gaza to rubble and claimed over 22,300 lives, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory.

US relations with South Africa have already been shaken over Pretoria’s refusal to join Western pressure on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

The US ambassador publicly accused South Africa last year of sending a ship of weapons to Russia, claims walked back by the State Department.

AAP's Sanjay Singh Told To Pay Rs 1 Lakh In Damages To Ex UP Minister

AAP's Sanjay Singh Told To Pay Rs 1 Lakh In Damages To Ex UP Minister In Defamation Case

Sanjay Singh had accused Mahendra Kumar Singh of indulging in corruption (File)

Lucknow:

A court here on Wednesday directed AAP leader Sanjay Singh to pay Rs 1 lakh in damages to former Uttar Pradesh minister Mahendra Kumar Singh in a defamation case.

In an order, Civil Judge (Senior Division) Kamla Kant Gupta directed the AAP MP to pay the damages within two months, following which an interest of six per cent will be imposed on the amount.

The court had issued notice to Sanjay Singh, currently in jail in connection with the Delhi excise policy scam case, but he did not respond to it. Hence the court proceeded ex parte against him.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow on August 8, 2021, the AAP leader had accused Mahendra Kumar Singh, the then Jal Shakti minister of Uttar Pradesh, of indulging in corruption in the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Mahendra Kumar Singh subsequently filed a civil defamation suit against the AAP MP and sought Rs 21 lakh in damages.

The court also directed the AAP leader to remove videos and print materials on his remarks from social media platforms.

Pronouncing the ex-parte verdict, the judge held that Sanjay Singh had made a defamatory statement against Mahendra Kumar Singh without any evidence and basis.

“The Indian Constitution ensures freedom of speech to every citizen, but it also imposes reasonable restriction on the use of this right,” the court observed.

Holding that Sanjay Singh has to remove the defamatory contents from social media platforms, the court observed, “As far as compensation is concerned, it is difficult to value the respect of a person and loss caused to him by a defamatory statement. But having regard to the status of the parties, their area of work and in the facts of the case, Rs 1 lakh compensation would be just and reasonable.”

"If We Had Been More Bharat…": S Jaishankar On India-China Ties

'If We Had Been More Bharat...': S Jaishankar On India-China Ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delved into the ideological landscape of that period.

New Delhi:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday reflected on India’s relationship with China, and while shedding light on historical nuances, he provided a perspective on how a more Bharat-centric approach could have shaped the nation’s view of its ties with China differently.

“If we had been more Bharat, we would have had a less rosy view of our relationship with China,” said Jaishankar delving into India’s historical perspectives on its relationships with China.

In an address at the launch event of his book ‘Why Bharat Matters’ in the national capital, Jaishankar asserted, “Regarding the three countries that I posited, Pakistan, China, and the US, were actually three very debated relationships in our early years.”

The minister referred to historical records, citing exchanges of notes and letters between the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on China. He emphasised the starkly differing views expressed by the two leaders, shedding light on the complexities of India’s early stance on its relationship with China.

“This is not something which is my fantasy. There is a kind of a record out there. There’s an exchange of notes, letters between Sardar Patel and Pandit Nehru on China, and they have very starkly differing views about it,” said the EAM.

Mr Jaishankar highlighted Nehru’s correspondence with Chief Ministers on the issue of China’s place in the UN Security Council, emphasising that this historical context provided insights into the nuanced dynamics of India’s diplomatic relations. “If one looks at even the whole UN Security Council issue, this is not something which someone is saying today. There is a letter which Nehru has written to Chief Ministers saying, first let China take its place in the Security Council,” Jaishankar added.

Even during the 1962 conflict, Jaishankar pointed out that Nehru sought assistance from the United States, acknowledging the hesitancy in seeking aid during a time when India was under attack.

“When the 1962 conflict war was taking place, Nehru actually wrote to Kennedy saying, ‘Look, I need your help’…I’m not putting his exact words…but more or less ‘I was hesitating to ask you because I was not sure how it would look overall when your country is actually under attack’,” the External Affairs Minister also said.

The External Affairs Minister delved into the ideological landscape of that period, noting a strong left-wing influence in China and an ingrained hostility towards the United States, acknowledging that the Americans had played a role in fostering that hostility.

“What happens is, in a sense there is a certain, I would say a kind of a left wing ideology which was very strong in that period, in China and similarly there’s very ingrained hostility towards the United States the Americans did a lot to deserve it. But the fact is that the things which the Americans did we probably didn’t deserve,” he added.

Addressing the issue of distrust towards the United States, Jaishankar referenced Sardar Patel’s views on foreign policy, suggesting a need to evaluate American relations based on India’s own interests rather than through the lens of America’s dealings with China.

“Again, it’s an interesting issue where one of the last comments of Sardar Patel on foreign policy was, why are we sort of so distrustful of America? We should look at America from the viewpoint of our own interest, not from the viewpoint of how Americans are dealing with China,” the EAM also said.

Earlier, in an interview with ANI, Jaishankar reiterated that India should deal with China on the basis of realism and asserted that the relationship should be based on the three mutual understandings– respect, sensitivity, and interest.

Jaishankar also reassessed India’s approach of engaging with China with realism in order to checkmate its aggressive measures, while also hitting out at the romanticism of the Nehruvian era with China.

“I argue for dealing with China from a basis of realism — that strain of realism, which I feel — strains all the way from Sardar Patel to Narendra Modi — that is the strain of realism which I feel should allow us to have a certain approach,” said Jaishankar.

In the same interview, the EAM also lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his pragmatic approach on China.

“I would say that the Modi Government has been very much more and in conformity with a strain of realism, which originated from Sardar Patel,” he said.

Explaining the difference in the approach of India’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Sardar Patel and first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, Jaishankar highlighted the difference of opinion among the two stalwarts.

“Even when it came, for example to the UN Security Council seat, it’s not my case that we should have necessarily taken the seat, it’s a different debate, but to say that we should first let China — China’s interest should come first, it’s a very peculiar statement to make,” said Jaishankar while dealing with the approach of Nehru and Sardar Patel’s realism.

Early into Nehru’s tenure, Sino-Indian relations were characterised by what was perceived as friendship and cordiality that covered both bilateral and regional and international issues; however, India got a rude awakening when China launched a war in 1962 that gave decision makers in New Delhi a reality check on their China policy.

“It takes two hands to clap. I pose the issue in this manner if you look at the last 75 plus years of our foreign policy, they have a strain of realism about China and have a strain of idealism, romanticism, non-realism. It begins right from day one, there is a sharp difference of opinion — how to respond to China between Nehru and Sardar Patel,” said Jaishankar while responding to a question on whether the two nations will bury the hatchet in 2024.
