Russia, Ukraine Announce Largest Prisoner Swap Since War Began

Russia, Ukraine Announce Largest Prisoner Swap Since War Began

The announcement come as Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine.

Kyiv:

Ukraine and Russia said Wednesday they had exchanged over two hundred captive soldiers each, in what officials have described as the biggest prisoner swap of the war so far.

The two warring sides have carried out dozens of exchanges since Moscow invaded in February 2022, but the process stalled in the latter half of last year.

In near simultaneous statements, Russia and Ukraine announced they had received over 200 soldiers each following talks mediated by the United Arab Emirates.

“More than 200 of our soldiers and civilians have been returned from Russian captivity,” Zelensky said on Telegram, posting a video of uniformed men celebrating.

Neither side had announced an exchange in almost five months, prompting Kyiv to accuse Moscow of deliberately blocking deals for political reasons.

“There was a long pause in the exchanges, but there was no pause in the negotiations,” Zelensky said in a later message, hailing the swap as “good news”.

Moscow’s defence ministry said 248 of its servicemen had been returned, and that they were being provided with “medical and psychological assistance”.

The UAE said the deal reflected its “strong friendly relations” with both Russia and Ukraine.

Neither side discloses how many prisoners are in their custody.

– Frontline strikes –
The announcement came as Russia continued to strike frontline areas of Ukraine, killing three people and wounding at least one, local officials said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed earlier this week to intensify strikes on the country following an unprecedented attack on the Russian city of Belgorod over the weekend.

“Today, at around 11 am (0900 GMT), Russians struck the city of Avdiivka with four missiles,” Donetsk regional head Vadym Filashkin said in a Telegram message.

“A 51-year-old man died on the spot,” he said, adding that a 50-year-old woman was wounded and taken to hospital.

Avdiivka lies close to the Russian-controlled stronghold of Donetsk and has been the focus of intense fighting for months.

Russian shelling also killed two people in villages on the Ukrainian-controlled western bank of the Dnipro River in Kherson region, regional head Oleksandr Prokudin said.

With the war nearing its second anniversary, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged his Western allies to keep up support amid intensified Russian attacks.

Russian forces launched a wave of air strikes on Ukrainian cities last Friday, killing 53 people, including 30 in the capital Kyiv, authorities said in an updated toll Wednesday.

Moscow has meanwhile continued an offensive near Bakhmut and Avdiivka on the eastern front, as well as Kupiansk in the northeast, Ukrainian army officials said.

ICC Test Rankings: Virat Returns To Top 10, Bumrah Also Jumps To 5th Spot

India’s batting talisman Virat Kohli started the new year on a good note as he re-entered the top 10 in the ICC Test rankings, climbing to ninth position, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the latest ranking update on Wednesday. Kohli, a previous top-ranked batter who fell out of the top 10 in mid-2022, has moved up four spots to ninth place with scores of 38 and 76, but is still 103 rating points behind top-ranked Kane Williamson of New Zealand (864 points). Joe Root comes in second with 859 rating points, while Steve Smith comes in third with 820.

“Former India captain Virat Kohli has returned to the top 10 of the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings while South Africa opener Dean Elgar has made a huge jump after his Player of the Match effort in the first Test of the two-match ICC World Test Championship series in Centurion, which the home side won by an innings and 32 runs to take a 1-0 lead,” ICC announced in a official statement.

Meanwhile, India skipper Rohit Sharma dropped four places to 14th position in the Test rankings. On the other side, South African veteran Dean Elgar is certain to retire as a top-20 batter after his efforts in the first Test in Centurion, jumping 19 places to 17th (680) ahead of his last appearance.

Following his comeback to Test cricket, Jasprit Bumrah re-entered the bowlers rankings, finishing fifth (767), just behind compatriot Ravindra Jadeja (774). Marco Jansen’s efforts resulted in a three-place climb to 22nd (618), but a five-place jump to 8th in the all-rounder standings, with a career-best rating of 268.

The latest weekly update also considers performances in the second Test between Australia and Pakistan. Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne has risen one spot to seventh after scoring a half-century in the first innings, while Alex Carey (up four places to 41st) and Mitchel Marsh (up 16 places to 52nd) have also risen.

Pakistan hitters Saud Shakeel (up one spot to 13th), Abdullah Shafique (up three spots to 21st), and Mohammed Rizwan (up four spots to 27th) advanced following the Melbourne Test, which Australia won by 79 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the three-Test series.

With the bat, Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran jumped 14 spots to 33rd after a half-century earlier in the week.

Imran Khan Challenges Rejection Of Nomination Papers For Pak Polls

Imran Khan Challenges Rejection Of Nomination Papers For Pak Polls

Lahore:

Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday challenged the rejection of his nomination papers for two National Assembly seats in Punjab in the run-up to the February 8 polls in the Lahore High Court’s tribunal.

The returning officer (RO) Lahore on Saturday rejected the nomination papers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf supremo for two National Assembly seats in Lahore and Mianwali districts of Punjab on “moral grounds and being convicted in the Toshakhana (national treasury gifts) corruption case.”

On Wednesday, Imran Khan, through his counsels, challenged the RO’s decision to reject his nomination papers for NA-122 Lahore and NA-89 Mianwali contending the conviction of the Toshakhana case has no link with his disqualification under Article 62 (1)(f) of the Constitution, therefore, his nomination papers cannot be rejected.

Imran Khan said the RO had also raised objections on his proposers and seconders not belonging to the constituencies he is contesting from. “Both the proposers and seconders belong to NA-122 and NA-89 (and) this objection of the ROs hold no ground,” Imran Khan said and pleaded before the court to set aside the RO’s decision and allow him to contest the February 8 polls from those same two constituencies.

Imran Khan, 71, has been languishing in Adiala jail under different cases since August 2023. Wednesday was the last date to challenge the ROs’ decisions.

The election body had rejected nomination papers of 90 per cent of important Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf  leaders on what the party described as “flimsy grounds,” mostly in Punjab.

Imran Khan’s party said more than 3,200 candidates’ nomination papers, mostly of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf , were rejected. Almost all such candidates have challenged the ROs’ decisions in the tribunals of the high court.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has alleged that the ROs, who are bureaucrats, have en mass rejected the nomination papers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders from across the country apparently on the direction of the ‘military establishment’.

Congress Leaders Must Attend Ayodhya Event If…: Team Uddhav

Congress Leaders Must Attend Ayodhya Event If...: Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena

“The Congress’ soul is Hindu. There is nothing to hide in it,” the party mouthpiece Saamana said.

Mumbai:

Underlining that the Congress’ “soul” is Hindu, Shiv Sena (UBT) on Wednesday said leaders of that party should attend the Lord Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya if they have received the special invitation, keeping aside political differences.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led party is an ally of Congress in Maha Vikas Aghadi and also a member of the INDIA bloc of opposition parties.

In an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana, the Shiv Sena (UBT) took a dig at the BJP, saying the Babri mosque wouldn’t have been brought down if the prime minister at that time was from that party.

P V Narasimha Rao was the prime minister when the structure was razed in December 1992.

“If Congress has received any special invitation for the Ram temple consecration ceremony then it (the leaders) should go to Ayodhya. What is wrong with it?” the editorial asked.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi have been invited to the consecration ceremony scheduled to be held on January 22.

The Congress on Friday said it would decide about Mr Kharge and Sonia Gandhi attending the event at an “appropriate time”. Congress’ leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has also been invited.

“The Congress’ soul is Hindu. There is nothing to hide in it,” the edit said.

It is wrong to say that the BJP is the beholder of Hindutva as claimed by that party. The Congress has equally contributed to the growth of Hindu culture, it added.

“The Congress never opposed the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya. Former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was of the opinion that Ram temple should be constructed in Ayodhya. It was on the instructions of Rajiv Gandhi that the famous serial Ramayan was telecast on Doordarshan,” the edit said.

Iran Holds Israel, US Responsible For Twin Blasts

Iran Holds Israel, US Responsible For Twin Blasts

At least 95 people were killed in twin blasts in Iran near general Qasem Soleimani’s tomb on Wednesday.

Tehran:

Iran blamed Israel and the US on Wednesday for twin bomb blasts that killed at least 95 people in the country’s south, ripping through a crowd commemorating Revolutionary Guards general Qasem Soleimani four years after his death in a US strike.

The two explosions — labelled a “terrorist attack” by state media and regional authorities — came amid high Middle East tensions over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza and the killing of a Hamas senior leader in Lebanon on Tuesday.

The unclaimed attacks, which sparked fears of a widening conflict in the region, rattled global markets where oil prices jumped more than three percent and sparked global condemnation.

“Washington says USA and Israel had no role in terrorist attack in Kerman, Iran. Really? A fox smells its own lair first,” the Iranian president’s political deputy, Mohammad Jamshidi wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“Make no mistake. The responsibility for this crime lies with the US and Zionist regimes (Israel) and terrorism is just a tool,” he added.

The United States had earlier rejected any suggestions that it or ally Israel were involved while Israel declined to comment.

“The United States was not involved in any way… We have no reason to believe that Israel was involved in this explosion,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said.

Asked about the blasts, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said: “We are focused on the combats with Hamas.”

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei blamed “evil and criminal enemies” of the country for the attack and vowed a “harsh response”.

President Ebrahim Raisi, who scrapped a visit to Turkey on Thursday, condemned the “heinous” crime as the Islamic Republic of Iran declared Thursday a national day of mourning.

The blasts, about 15 minutes apart, struck near the Martyrs Cemetery at the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque in Kerman, Soleimani’s southern hometown, as supporters gathered to mark his killing in a 2020 US drone strike in Baghdad.

Official IRNA news agency initially reported 103 people were killed while state television said 211 wounded, some in critical condition.

Health minister Bahram Eynollahi later revised the toll, saying, “The exact number of the people killed in the terrorist incident is 95”.

He said the reason for the earlier figure of 103 was that some names “were wrongly registered twice”.

Three paramedics who rushed to the scene after the first explosion were among those killed, said Iran’s Red Crescent.

IRNA said the first explosion took place around 700 metres (yards) from Soleimani’s grave while the other was around one kilometre away.

Tasnim news agency, quoting what it called informed sources, said “two bags carrying bombs went off” and “the perpetrators… apparently detonated the bombs by remote control”.

Online footage showed panicked crowds scrambling to flee as security personnel cordoned off the area.

– ‘Shocking cruelty’ –
State television showed bloodied victims lying on the ground and ambulances and rescue personnel racing to help them.

“We were walking towards the cemetery when a car suddenly stopped behind us and a waste bin containing a bomb exploded,” an eyewitness was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.

“We only heard the explosion and saw people falling.”

By nightfall, crowds returned to the Martyrs Cemetery in Kerman chanting: “Death to Israel” and “Death to America”.

In Tehran, thousands gathered at the Grand Mosalla Mosque to pay tribute to Soleimani.

“We condemn today’s bitter terrorist incident… I hope the perpetrators of the crime will be identified and punished for their actions,” Soleimani’s daughter, Zeinab, said.

Soleimani headed the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, overseeing military operations across the Middle East.

The United Nations, European Union, and several countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany and Iraq denounced the blasts.

UN chief Antonio Guterres “strongly condemns” the blasts, his office said, and the EU said: “This act of terror has exacted a shocking toll of civilian deaths and injuries.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin wrote to Raisi and Khamenei that “the killing of peaceful people visiting the cemetery is shocking in its cruelty and cynicism.”

Iran ally Hamas denounced the “criminal attack” while the Saudi foreign ministry in Riyadh voiced “solidarity with Iran in this painful event”.

The blasts came a day after Hamas number two Saleh al-Aruri — an Iran ally — was killed in a strike, which Lebanese officials blamed on Israel, on a southern Beirut suburb that is a stronghold of Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.

Wednesday’s bomb blasts were Iran’s deadliest since a 1978 arson Cinema Rex attack in the southwestern city of Abadan, which killed at least 377 people, according to AFP archives.

– Previous plots –
Iran has long fought a shadow war of killings and sabotage with arch enemy Israel and also battled various jihadist and other militant groups.

In September, the Fars news agency reported that a key “operative” affiliated with the Islamic State group, in charge of carrying out “terrorist operations” in Iran, had been arrested in Kerman.

In July, Iran’s intelligence ministry said it had disbanded a network “linked to Israel’s spy organisation” which had been plotting “terrorist operations” across Iran, IRNA reported.

The alleged plots included “planning an explosion at the grave” of Soleimani, it said.

Soleimani, whom Khamenei years ago declared a “living martyr”, was widely regarded as a hero in Iran for his role in defeating IS in both Iraq and Syria.

Long seen as a deadly adversary by the United States and its allies, Soleimani was one of the most important powerbrokers across the region, setting Iran’s political and military agenda in Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

"Scumbag Has Taken It…": Warner's Dad Fumes Over Stolen 'Baggy Green'

David Warner‘s father has slammed the “scumbag” who took his son’s ‘Baggy Green’ cap before his farewell Test, which got underway at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Wednesday. On the eve of his final Test appearance, Warner had revealed that he had lost his Test cap in transit from Melbourne to Sydney. Despite making a public, Warner has had no success in finding his ‘Baggy Green’. Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had also pleaded for the swift return of Warner’s prized possession.

As Pakistan opted to bat in the first Test, Warner came out to the outfield wearing a replacement cap.

Warner’s father, Howard, expressed his disappointment that someone might have taken the ‘Baggy Green’ deliberately, labelling the person as a “scumbag”. He also urged the person to return his son’s cap.

“Whatever scumbag has taken it is going to have to lay it off very shortly. They’ll find it dumped somewhere. I know he’s emotional. He would love to walk out with that baggy green on but if he can’t, he can’t. What can you do. Everyone in Australia knows about the baggy green,” Howard Warner said on SEN Radio, as quoted by Sydney Morning Herald.

Pakistan captain Shan Masood had also pleaded that a nationwide search and government intervention was needed to find the cap.

Meanwhile, Cricket Australia (CA) are co-ordinating with the airline, Qantas, to find Warner’s cap.

“This is my last resort to do this. A couple of days ago, our bags got freighted via Qantas. We’ve gone through CCTV footage, they’ve got some blind spots apparently, we spoke to the Quay West Hotel who we absolutely trust and have gone through their cameras, no one’s come into our rooms,” Warner had said in a video message on Tuesday.

“But unfortunately, someone has taken my backpack out of my actual luggage, which had my backpack and my girls’ presents in there [and] inside this backpack was my baggy greens. It’s sentimental to me, it’s something I would love to have back in my hands walking out there come this week. If it is the backpack you really wanted, I have a spare one here. You won’t get into trouble,” he further revealed.

'Iran to use all available mechanisms to ensure accountability for terror attacks'

Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations

Iran’s UN envoy says the country is to use “all available mechanisms” to ensure accountability for the perpetrators of earlier hugely deadly terror attacks that targeted the southwestern Iranian city of Kerman.

Amir Saeid Iravani, the Islamic Republic’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations, made the remarks in a letter to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the world body’s Security Council on Wednesday.

Hours earlier, at least 103 people were killed and 211 others injured in two explosions that took place near the burial site of Iran’s former senior anti-terror commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.

Iravani denounced the blasts as “a heinous terrorist act and an appalling crime.”

‘Premeditated crime’

“This reprehensible act,” the ambassador said, “deliberately targeted innocent people.”

The envoy asserted that comprehensive investigations were underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators and organizers of this “premeditated crime.”

He reiterated that Iran remained “steadfast” in both the pursuit of justice for the victims and the country’s ongoing fight against terrorism.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said the Islamic Republic had started taking “legal measures” through the United Nations as part of its efforts to ensure accountability for those responsible for the Kerman attacks.

Hamas: Iran terror blasts in line with Israel interests

Condemnations have been pouring in following the blasts.

The Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas condemned the attacks, which it considered to be “in the service of the Zionist regime’s interests and its sinister plans against the security and safety of the people of the region.”

Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry also denounced the terror attacks, expressing condolences towards the Islamic Republic.

Leaders from Russia, Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, and other countries from across the globe have also released statements in condemnation of the tragedy.
