One more feather of corruption in cap of INDIA bloc: BJP after Soren resigns as Jharkhand CM

New Delhi; After Hemant Soren stepped down as Jharkhand Chief Minister following daylong questioning by the Enforcement Directorate, the BJP on Wednesday dubbed him “one more feather of corruption” in the opposition bloc INDIA’s cap.

After Soren’s resignation, senior JMM leader Champai Soren was named as his successor. JMM’s Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Maji claimed that the 48-year-old Hemant Soren was in the “custody” of the Enforcement Directorate.

The chief minister was questioned by the agency for more than seven hours during the day on money laundering charges in an alleged land fraud case.

Reacting to the development, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla wrote on X, “One more feather of corruption in cap of ‘INDI Alliance’ from Jharkhand.”

The BJP leader also used the opportunity to target Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and said, “There was a time (when) Kejriwal used to demand arrest of Lalu, Soren, Sonia. These days he defends them because he himself is (the) mastermind of Sharab Ghotala (excise policy scam).”

The ED has issued a fifth summons to the Delhi chief minister for his questioning in the excise policy linked money laundering case, official sources said Wednesday.

Kejriwal, who is the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has skipped four earlier summonses issued by the probe agency over the last four months. Reacting to the development in Jharkhand, BJP Rajya Sabha MP and former state unit chief Deepak Prakash told PTI, “The people of Jharkhand have got justice today.” “In his four-year rule, Hemant Soren tried to turn Jharkhand into ‘loot-khand’. He was the king of all the scams – liquor scam, land scam and mining scam. His followers also looted Jharkhand,” the BJP leader charged.

Prakash said people expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi to put a curb on corruption and it is “Modi’s guarantee that the corrupt will be put behind bars for looting people’s money”. “No one is above the law. Be it a king or a pauper, everyone is equal before the law,” he added.

Moscow:

Russia on Wednesday said it destroyed 20 missiles launched by Ukraine over the Black Sea and the Moscow-annexed Crimea peninsula.

“Air defence on duty destroyed 17 Ukrainian missiles over the Black Sea and another three over the Crimea peninsula,” the Russian defence ministry said on social media.

The ministry added that debris from a missile fell near Lyubimovka”, a northern suburb of the city of Sevastopol.

The Moscow-installed governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, earlier said air defence was working over the city.

He said debris fell “around Federovskaya Street in a private sector”, but added there were no casualties. The street lies on the outskirts of Sevastopol.

Razvozhayev later said that garden allotments were damaged in the attack but that “no people” were hurt.

He called on the port’s residents to “remain calm”.

Sevastopol is home to Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and has regularly been targeted by Ukrainian attacks during Moscow’s almost two-year offensive.

Putting ED against Jharkhand CM Soren, forcing him to quit blow to federalism: Kharge

New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday said “forcing” Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to resign after putting the Enforcement Directorate against him is “a blow to federalism”.

Soren resigned as chief minister Wednesday evening after over seven hours of questioning by the ED on money laundering charges linked to alleged land fraud. Thereafter, he was arrested by the agency.

Targeting the government over the development, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that agencies such as the ED, CBI and the I-T Department “are no longer government agencies, now they have become BJP’s ‘eliminate opposition cell.”

In a post in Hindi on X, Congress chief Kharge said, “The one who did not go with (Narendra) Modi ji will go to jail. Putting ED against Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and forcing him to resign is a blow to federalism.”

Intimidating opposition leaders by making the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) draconian is part of the BJP’s toolkit, he alleged.

The BJP’s work of destabilising opposition party-led governments one by one as part of a conspiracy is continuing, the Congress chief further alleged.

“What went into the BJP’s washing machine is clean as white, what didn’t is tainted? If democracy has to be saved from dictatorship then the BJP will have to be defeated. We will not be afraid. We will continue to fight from Parliament to streets,” he also said.

In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi alleged that in its obsession for power, “the BJP, which is steeped in corruption, is running a campaign to destroy democracy.”

Iran reacts to Saudi Arabia-Kuwait join statement

The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to continue bilateral negotiations with Kuwait within the framework of the results of the previous negotiations with this country regarding the exploitation of joint hydrocarbon resources in the Arash field as well as the issues related to the maritime boundaries, the senior Iranian diplomat said.

Emphasizing the principled policy of Iran regarding good neighborliness and strengthening relations with neighbors, Kan’ani added that Tehran believes that an agreement regarding this case can be reached through constructive cooperation and interaction and with respect for the interests of the two countries.

Making unilateral claims does not provide a suitable atmosphere for managing and advancing the issue, based on common interests, he added.
