Hyderabad: Punjagutta station personnel moved to headquarters

Hyderabad: In a major move, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police, K Sreenivasa Reddy transferred the staff of the Punjagutta police station and shifted them to police headquarters.

A total of 85 personnel from the rank of sub inspector to constable were shifted to the City Armed Reserve headquarters by the Hyderabad CP. The move comes at a time when the police station is in news for favouritism, professional negligence and corruption allegations.

Last month, the Hyderabad CP, had placed under suspension Punjagutta Station House Officer, P Durga Rao for allegedly helping Rahil Shakil, son of former Bodhan MLA Aamir Shakil to escape in a rash and drunk driving case by citing some other person as an accused in the case.

When the truth came out during the enquiry, Rahil Shakil managed to escape to Dubai and Bodhan Inspector Prem Kumar was arrested along with others in the case. Durga Rao who is cited an accused in the case is absconding.

In another recent incident, a man who was arrested for driving a car rashly and injuring several persons at Punjagutta escaped from the police custody at Gandhi Hospital.

Apart from this there were several allegations against the policemen of graft following which the Hyderabad CP took a serious note and transferred all the 85 personnel to CAR headquarters. Also, orders were issued to immediately post about 83 policemen of various ranks working in different police stations in the city to report to Punjagutta police station.

It is for the first time in recent years such a big move was initiated by the police higher ups.

Hyderabad: A day after police ordered street-food vendor, social media star ‘Kumari Aunty’ to shut her food stall in Madhapur, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy responded on Wednesday and directed the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department and the State DGP to revoke their decision and let her reopen her stall.

The Raidurgam police had on Tuesday shut her shop citing traffic congestion and asked her to relocate to another location, leading to discussions with divided opinions on the internet.

‘Kumari Aunty’ rose to fame on social media with food vloggers from the city visiting her stall and attracting large crowds. Such is her popularity, that even film actors were seen dropping by her food stall during their film promotions.

Her popularity led to overcrowding and traffic jams in the lane next to ITC Kohenur, forcing police to intervene.

Mayank Agarwal's First Social Media Post Since In-Flight Scare

Indian cricketer Mayank Agarwal escaped a huge tragedy after consuming a poisonous liquid, thinking it was water, in an Agartala to Delhi flight on Tuesday. Agarwal was immediately admitted to a hospital in Agartala where the doctors treated him in ICU. Understanding that there could be some conspiracy in the entire scenario, Agarwal even filed an FIR with the police, though an investigation in the matter is still ongoing. On Wednesday, the cricketer took to social media to share an update about his health.

“I am feeling better now. Gearing to come back. Thank you for prayers, love and support, everyone!,” Mayank’s post read.

Mayank is said to be “out of danger” and will be taken to Bengaluru, Karnataka Ranji team manager said on Wednesday. Mayank was admitted to hospital on Tuesday after he vomited and felt uneasy. While on a flight, he consumed liquid from a bottle that he believed contained drinking water.

Karnataka State Cricket Association (KCA) Ranji team manager Ramesh told ANI that the Karnataka skipper’s statement is being recorded by the police.

“Mayank Agarwal is out of danger now and his statement is being recorded by the police…we don’t know in detail on this matter, we are taking him to Bengaluru today,” Ramesh said.

Tripura Cricket Association (TCA) working secretary Basudeb Chakraborty had said earlier that during the flight Mayank drank from a bottle which led to his feeling sick.

“We sent TCA staff to the hospital and they conveyed that there was a bottle, Mayank drank it assuming that it was water and after drinking it he felt acidic and it gave a burning sensation,” Basudeb told ANI.

The flight to Delhi returned to Agartala due to a medical emergency.

According to ESPNcricinfo, the Karnataka team manager, on behalf of Agarwal, has also requested the Tripura police to investigate the incident.

A written complaint has been given to K Kiran Kumar, Superintendent of Police (Tripura West) and a case has been registered under the jurisdiction of the New Capital Complex Police Station in Agartala.

UAE sends first ambassador to Syria in 13 years

The United Arab Emirates has dispatched the country’s first ambassador to Syria after 13 years, following the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two Arab countries.

The incoming Emirati envoy officially presented his credentials to Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mikdad at the Arab country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the capital Damascus on Tuesday.

According to Syria’s official SANA news agency, Hassan al-Shehi conveyed to the Syrian side his commitment to enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries during his meeting with Mikdad.

He also pledged to work to strengthen cooperation and achieve mutual progress between the two Arab countries.

For his part, Mekdad expressed Syria’s deep appreciation for the UAE’s solidarity with and support for Syria during challenging times.

Shehi arrived in Syria on Monday to become the first envoy of his country to Syria since 2011. He had served as the ambassador of the United Arab Emirates in Iraq since 2015, and before that, had been the ambassador to Sudan.

The UAE cut its relations with Syria in 2012, a year after Damascus found itself in the grips of foreign-backed terrorism and violence, but it reopened its embassy in Damascus in December 2018 amid Syria’s increasing success in recapturing vast swathes of its territory and turning the tide against the foreign-sponsored terrorists.

Before Shehi arrived in Syria a charge d’affaires had been in charge of the diplomatic mission.

In March 2022, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad traveled to the UAE, meeting with Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Assad’s visit to the UAE took place only months after the Emirates’ Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan traveled to the Syrian capital Damascus.

In May 2022, the 22-member Arab League agreed to reinstate Syria, ending a 12-year suspension and taking another step toward bringing Assad, back into the fold.

Saudi Arabia, which last year reached an agreement with Iran to restore bilateral ties, has opened the door for possible dialogue with Damascus in another signal of Syria’s warming ties with the Arab world.

Syrian daily Al-Watan has reported that Riyadh would be sending an ambassador to Damascus soon.

Million-Year-Old Fish With Extreme Underbite Showcases Vertebrate Diversity

365-Million-Year-Old Fish With Extreme Underbite Showcases Vertebrate Diversity

Alienacanthus is a member of an extinct group of fish called placoderms

Vertebrates are defined as all animals that possess a vertebral column, or backbone. Most living vertebrates also possess jaws, teeth and paired fins or limbs.

Fossils of the earliest vertebrates help us understand not only how these features originated, but also how they evolved and diversified over time.

Our study, published in Royal Society Open Science, examines 365-million-year-old fossils of a fish with the world’s longest underbite, called Alienacanthus malkowskii. These fossils demonstrate the diversity of jawed vertebrates early on during their evolution.

Alienacanthus is a member of an extinct group of fish called placoderms, which are some of the first jawed vertebrates. They are armoured fish of various shapes and sizes and are essential to understanding the evolution of vertebrates and their features, particularly jaws and teeth.

Together, placoderm jaws and teeth hold evidence of feeding strategies and diets, giving us insights into what and how some of our fishy ancestors ate.

From spine to jaw

In 1957, Polish paleontologist Julian Kulczycki described fossil fishes from the Polish Holy Cross mountains. Among these finds were two partially broken long thin bones which he thought were some weird-looking fin spines from a fish. The odd shape of the so-called spines gave the animal its name, Alienacanthus.

In the late 1990s to early 2000s, members of our research team came across some Moroccan specimens in the collections of the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris that included the same bony elements. The team later encountered more specimens from Poland and Morocco, which we identified as belonging to a placoderm.

Alienacanthus had a massive, rounded head with a pointy snout and large eyes. What Kulczycki had identified as spines turned out to be the lower jaws, which extended way past the closing of the mouth, unlike the upper jaws. The teeth were sharp, slightly curved towards the back to trap live prey, and the teeth continued past the closing of the mouth.

Unlike in other placoderms, the upper jaws of Alienacanthus were capable of a slight movement independently of the skull, helping to accommodate the lower jaw.

Most extreme case

The extended lower jaw of Alienacanthus, twice as long as the skull, is unique among placoderms and extremely rare in other living and fossil groups. In most animals, jaw protrusion is seen in the upper jaw, like in the swordfish, or both upper and lower jaws like ichthyosaurs or gharials.

Among living species, only a tiny fish called the halfbeak shows an elongated lower jaw. The halfbeak measures just five to 10 cm in length, while Alienacanthus‘ head and jaws alone reach 80 cm. The relative length of the lower jaw is also 20 per cent greater than in the halfbeak.

Alienacanthus also holds the title of the oldest case of lower jaw elongation. The previous record belonged to the 310-million-year-old shark Ornithoprion.

The Age of fishes

Alienacanthus and relatives lived during the Devonian period (358 to 419 million years ago), also referred to by paleontologists as the Age of fishes. During this time, a variety of fish groups ruled the oceans, including sharks, bony fishes, jawless fishes and placoderms, which together illustrated a wide range of body, head and jaw shapes.

Alienacanthus stretches that diversity to the limit with such a unique look. Fifteen million years after this animal’s occurrence, placoderms met their demise.

The evolution of more complex jaws allowed for a wider range of feeding and hunting methods. The oldest placoderms favoured a fast-closing mouth for catching prey. But some placoderms started feeding on durophagous animals, with hard shells and exoskeletons, and others may have been filter-feeders.

Alienacanthus used its sharp teeth to catch and trap live prey, possibly using its elongated jaw to confuse or injure its future meal, as seen in swordfish and some ichthyosaurs.

Learning more

The further back in time we go, the more our planet’s continents looked different. During the Late Devonian period, when Alienacanthus lived, Poland was situated on the northeastern coast and Morocco on the southern coast of a vast ocean. The presence of the same species on both ends shows that migration occurred in that ocean at that time, despite sea level fluctuation.

Alienacanthus comprises just one of numerous recent finds in Poland and Morocco from the Late Devonian period. Such discoveries illustrate the remaining high potential for deposits of this age to reveal critical insights about early vertebrates. The Conversation

Yemeni forces target US warship in Red Sea with missiles: Army spokesman

Yemen’s naval units have fired “several” missiles at a US Navy warship just off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea, according to the Yemeni military’s spokesman.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree said in a televised speech broadcast live from the Yemeni capital Sana’a on Wednesday that the Yemeni forces had carried out an operation against the USS Gridley destroyer.

He noted that the missile attack came in support of the oppressed Palestinians and resistance fighters in the Gaza Strip and in response to joint American-British aggression against Yemen.

Saree underscored that all US and British warships in the Red Sea and the Arab Sea, which are participating in the ongoing aggression against the Arab nation, have become legitimate targets for Yemenis within the fundamental and inalienable right to defend their homeland and nation, and in reaffirmation of their staunch support of Palestine.

The senior Yemeni military figure also emphasized that his country’s military will continue its anti-Israel operations until the Tel Aviv regime halts its onslaught against Gaza and eases restrictions on supplies of humanitarian aid for its Palestinian population.

Yemenis have declared their open support for Palestine’s struggle against the Israeli occupation since the regime launched a devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

The United States and United Kingdom have been carrying out strikes against Yemen after the Biden administration and its allies offered the Tel Aviv regime unqualified support and said that Yemeni forces bear the consequences of their attacks against Israeli-owned ships or merchant vessels heading to the occupied territories.

Yemeni Armed Forces have said that they won’t stop their attacks until unrelenting Israeli ground and aerial offensives in Gaza, which have killed at least 26,751 people and wounded another 65,636 individuals, come to an end.

Leader of the Ansarullah resistance movement, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, has said that it is “a great honor and blessing to be confronting America directly.”

The attacks have forced some of the world’s biggest shipping and oil companies to suspend transit through one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. Tankers are instead adding thousands of miles to international shipping routes by sailing around the continent of Africa rather than going through the Suez Canal.

Probe Agency Officials At Hemant Soren's Ranchi Home, Day After "Missing" Drama

Probe Agency Officials At Hemant Soren's Ranchi Home, Day After 'Missing' Drama

Ranchi:

An Enforcement Directorate team reached Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren‘s Ranchi home this morning, to question him in connection with a money laundering scam, over 48 hours after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader went “missing” from his Delhi residence and “resurfaced” in his state.

Visuals from outside his home showed a large convoy of vehicles, some with security personnel inside, driving up to the main gate and being stopped by armed security personnel from Mr Soren’s side, including those in suits.

There appeared to be some commotion as the men in suits (presumably his personal security) spoke to those in the first car. Seconds later the vehicle, it appears to be a Toyota Fortuner, drives through the gates, followed by the others.

The probe agency’s officials are likely to find Mr Soren flanked by MLAs from his JMM, news agency PTI has said; Agriculture Minister, Badal Patralekh, said the party stands “behind the Chief Minister”.

Mr Soren, 48, had earlier been questioned on January 20, after which the agency issued a second summons for this week. Sources told ANI said the agency offered him two dates – January 29 or 31.

The agency, sources within which said the first interrogation had not been completed, said it would take action on its own if no date was selected. Last week the Jharkhand leader said he would be available at his Ranchi home 1 pm on January 31.

However, before that there was drama and controversy, with Mr Soren flying into Delhi Saturday in a private plane, and then disappearing from his home in the national capital by Sunday night.

He reportedly took a secretive nearly 1,300-km road trip back home.

Mr Soren is being questioned as part of an investigation into a “huge racket of illegal change of ownership of land by the mafia” in Jharkhand, ED officials have said. Fourteen people have been arrested in this case so far.

Amid speculation Mr Soren could be the 15th, the Chief Minister’s wife was spotted at a meeting of party legislators in Ranchi Tuesday evening, leading to talk she might be installed in the top job should her husband be jailed.

The JMM has said it will back Ms Soren, but there are legal hurdles since she is not a member of the Assembly and there is no time for a bypoll.
