Nizamabad: Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu asked officials to identify blackspots in the district to reduce road accidents.

The Collector, who held a Road Safety District Committee meeting with the officials of Police, Transport, Roads & Buildings, Panchayat Raj, Revenue, National Highways Authority of India, District Health Department, RTC and other departments on Wednesday, asked Police, R&B, Road Transport and other departments to work in coordination to prevent accidents.

Signboards should be set up to warn the motorists in areas where there was a possibility of accidents and corrective measures should be taken on routes that were accident prone, he said.

Commissioner of Police Kalmeshwar Shingenavar informed that last year there were 767 road accidents in the district and 337 people lost their lives and 203 people were seriously injured. Most of the accidents were happening in the jurisdiction of Dichpally Police Station, he said.

Ex-Pakistani PM Khan gets more jail time ahead of elections

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 14 years in jail for “corruption”, the second sentence handed to him in two days just a week before national elections.

On Wednesday, an accountability court in Rawalpindi, which deals with corruption cases, also slapped a fine of about 1.5 billion rupees ($5.3 million) on the couple.

The accusations were brought against them by Pakistan’s anti-corruption watchdog. It said they had sold or kept state gifts received in office for personal profit. Such gifts included a jewelry set from the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.

Khan is barred from standing in next Thursday’s elections as he is already serving a three-year jail term for corruption.

The former Pakistani leader has said the numerous cases against him are “politically motivated.”

Khan was ousted through a no-confidence vote in Parliament in April 2022 and is currently serving a three-year prison sentence in a graft case.

The recent sentence came a day after Khan was given a 10-year prison term for “revealing state secrets.” It was unclear whether the sentences are to run consecutively or concurrently.

An official with Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Syed Zulfiqar Bukhari said the sentencing of Khan was “yet another sad day in Pakistan’s judicial history” and questioned its legitimacy.

“Judiciary is being dismantled. A flawed decision meant to be suspended by the higher court, as witnesses clearly seemed compromised,” he was quoted as saying by media.

“No cross-questioning allowed, no final argument concluded and decision pops up like a pre-determined process in play,” he added.

Khan’s lawyers have also said he was not given a chance to defend himself in a trial that moved more quickly than expected.

The reporters at the scene also said the judge also read out the verdicts while neither Khan, Bibi, or their legal team were in the courtroom.

Khan’s wife, Bibi, who had been out on remand, surrendered at the jail on Wednesday.

According to the PTI, the sentencing further bans their leader from future political work. He will be disqualified for 10 years from holding public office.

Khan says the legal cases against him were a plot to sideline him ahead of the vote on February 8..

The former prime minister also says his ouster was a US conspiracy, executed by the military and the government in Pakistan, what US and Pakistani officials have denied.

Pakistani political analyst Cyril Almeida said Khan’s conviction is a message from the powerful military to the people before the vote next week.

“The generals are telling the voter: don’t bother. Don’t bother turning up to vote for Imran because he will not be allowed near power again anytime soon,” he told Al Jazeera.

“Whether the voters obey [the army] will be known next week. The charges are political, the conviction is political, and, if and when the time comes, the reversal will be political.”

Nizamabad: Expressing concern over the increase in the use of intoxicating substances in the district, Commissioner of Police Kalmeswar Shingenavar said Nizamabad was one of the top three districts in the State in Alprazolam consumption.

Taking part in the District Level Anti-Narcotics Committee on Wednesday, the police commissioner said Alprazolam was used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety, but many use them as narcotic substances. Last year no cases related to ganja cultivation were registered in the district, but many people were selling ganja by bringing it into the district from other areas, and raids were being carried out to keep an eye on such people, he said.

Cannabis was being cultivated on a large scale in Odisha and reaching the district through Andhra region, and to stop the flow of ganja special surveillance was being carried out in the border areas of the district, he said, adding that police was coordinating with excise and other departments to check the transportation of ganja and other narcotic substances in the district.

Stressing the need to create awareness among students and youth about the ill-effects of drug use, Collector Rajiv Gandhi Hanumanthu emphasised the need to stop drug menace in educational institutions and directed officials to set anti-drugs committees in schools and colleges in the district.

He directed the officials of agriculture, forest and other departments to alert the field level staff regarding the cultivation and use of ganja in the district.

“If the sources of narcotic substances such as ganja are identified in the district and who is selling them, and to which areas they are being transported through the district, the supply and consumption of narcotic substances can be controlled,”he observed.

‘Hellish’: WHO says unable to deliver aid to Gaza hospital amid ‘serious medicine shortage’

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it could not deliver medicine, fuel and food to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza despite a “serious shortage” after delays at checkpoints.

Nasser Hospital, Gaza’s largest remaining healthcare facility, has been under sustained assault from Israeli forces since the war began in October.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO chief said the hospital is only “minimally functioning” and facing shortages of major resources.

He said WHO and partners were able to reach the hospital and deliver essential medical supplies for 1,000 patients; however, there remain shortages of “specialized medical practitioners, medicines, oxygen, food, fuel” and “ways to dispose of solid waste.”

“The team had also planned to deliver food to the hospital, but the delivery was delayed,” he said.

According to Tedros such delays “increase the health risks” for vulnerable patients and “hamper health personnel.”

“Today, due to delays around the checkpoint, the crowds took food being delivered, and once again it did not reach Nasser. This underscores the utter desperation of people in Gaza, who live in hellish conditions, including severe hunger. We continue to seek permission to deliver the fuel to the hospital,” he added.

Mercy Corps, an aid worker, after a rare food delivery reached Northern Gaza also said she “witnessed two people suffocating to death from the overcrowding.”

“We don’t know where they were injured or even their names,” Dr Omar Abu Taha says, as Palestinians bury dozens of bodies, released by Israel, in Rafah.

The Palestine Red Crescent also says that Israeli troops have stormed al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis and are demanding doctors and displaced Palestinians evacuate.

At least 26,900 people have been killed and 65,949 wounded since the West-backed Israeli genocide was launched in Gaza on October 7.

"Horrific Wickets": England Star Triggers Fresh Debate On Indian Pitches

English wicketkeeper-batter Ben Foakes on Tuesday recalled the pitch during the first Test match against India in Hyderabad and said that it was ‘horrific”. While speaking ahead of the second Test match in Visakhapatnam, Foakes said that the visitors are more positive and looking forward to putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. “Going into that, I was thinking, ‘These are horrific wickets – I just need to find a way to stay in’ I think now the group is more, if that’s the situation, you’ve got to be positive; got to put it [pressure] back on the bowler and put them under pressure,” Foakes was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying.

He added that the English batters still have the fear of getting out which kept in their shells.

“Before, there was more of a fear of getting out and that put us in our shells. Whereas now it’s not worrying that you are getting out and accepting that you probably are on those sort of surfaces. But how can you actually go and dominate at times as well?” he added.

Both England and India have arrived in Visakhapatnam ahead of the second Test which will begin on Friday.

Recapping the first Test match, India will be keen for redemption after going 1-0 down in the series. The hosts were in complete control of the Test and dominated the visitors. But on Day 3, Ollie Pope stepped onto the crease and changed the entire complexion of the game with his reverse sweeps.

He not only brushed off India’s 190-run lead but went on to hand England a target that could be defended on a tricky surface with his knock of 196.

Debutant Tom Hartley introduced himself and spun India’s batters out with his spell of 7/62. He ended the Test with 9/193 which is the best figure for an England spinner on Test debut since 1945.

His nine wickets tally in the first Test in a match is the joint-most since former English spinner Robert Berry’s 9/116 against West Indies in Manchester in 1950.

Hartley also became just the fourth England spinner to claim a five-wicket haul on Test debut in this century.

AI Pics Of Joe Biden In Military Gear Go Viral Amid Middle East Tensions

Amid US-Middle East Tensions, AI Pics Of Joe Biden In Military Uniform Go Viral

The White House vowed a “very consequential response” to the drone attack.

As tensions between the US and the Middle East continue to grow, AI-generated pictures of President Joe Biden wearing military gear in the White House Situation Room went viral online. This came after a drone attack on a base in Jordan killed three American troops on Sunday, with President Biden blaming Iran-backed militants and vowing to hold the perpetrators to account. The casualties, the first US military deaths in an attack in the region since the Israel-Hamas war began, raised fears of an escalating conflict, as fighting rages in Gaza.

In an apparent attempt to demonstrate that the US was on a war footing, Mr Biden is seen in the pictures sitting at a desk with advisers while wearing a camouflage outfit.  The pictures have been uploaded to X (formerly Twitter).

As per X user Luke, the photos were created using Midjourney, a generative artificial intelligence program.

Meanwhile, the White House on Monday vowed a “very consequential response” to the drone attack. Washington’s response will be “very consequential,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told CNN. “But we don’t seek a war with Iran. We’re not looking for a wider conflict in the Middle East,” he added.

Iran said it had nothing to do with the attack and denied US accusations that it supported militant groups responsible for the Sunday strike on the remote frontier base in Jordan’s northeast, near the borders with Iraq and Syria.

While Washington is still gathering the facts, “we know it was carried out by radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq,” Mr Biden said Sunday, pledging to hold “all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing.”

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani has rejected the accusations as “baseless,” adding that Tehran “is not involved in the decisions of the resistance groups.”

There has so far been no claim of responsibility for the strike, although on Sunday the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed to have launched three drone attacks at bases in Syria, including near the Jordanian border.

Hyderabad: Backward Classes Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said the State government would introduce the BC Caste Census Bill in the upcoming budget session of the Assembly.

Disclosing this to the media at Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday, Ponnam said Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had entrusted him with supervising the process of preparing the draft Bill that would be presented in the Assembly.

The Congress government was committed towards conducting the BC Caste Census in the State and seriously working on it to introduce the Bill in the Budget Session, he said, adding that a caste census would help the government design welfare schemes based on the population of various castes and help in delivering the benefits of the welfare schemes to the targeted sections.

Officials have asked to prepare a draft Bill based on the process being followed in Bihar and other States where caste-based surveys have been undertaken, he said. “We will adopt the best procedures of conducting Caste Census which will benefit the BC communities. Will take the suggestions of retired judges and civil servants too,”he said.

The Bihar government completed a two-phase caste survey four months ago, revealing that 63 percent of the State’s population belonged to Backward Classes.

Similarly, the Karnataka government conducted a Caste Census under the banner of socioeconomic and education survey last year. Even the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh has also initiated a similar process.
