Hemant Soren Files Case Against Probe Agency Under SC/ST Act

The complaint is related to the agency’s search operation at the chief minister’s residence in Delhi.

Ranchi:

Amid speculation about Hemant Soren’s imminent arrest, the Jharkhand chief minister has filed a case against senior officers of the Enforcement Directorate’s Ranchi office under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The complaint, filed at the SC/ST police station in Ranchi on Wednesday, pertains to the agency’s search operation at Mr Soren’s residence in New Delhi on Monday, and claims that the action harassed and maligned him and his entire community.

The Jharkhand Chief Minister belongs to a Scheduled Tribe.

“An FIR has been lodged against some senior ED officials… we got the application from the chief minister,” Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police, Chandan Kumar Sinha, told news agency PTI.

Mr Soren is being questioned by the ED at his residence in Ranchi in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. There is a strong buzz that he may be arrested and his party has reportedly also planned for that eventuality.

The agency’s operation at the Jharkhand chief minister’s Delhi home had turned dramatic on Monday after ED officials reached in the morning to question him, but could not find him there. They seized Rs 36 lakh in cash and a BMW X7, which costs over Rs 1 crore. In his complaint on Wednesday, Mr Soren has stated that he is not the owner of the BMW and does not own any illicit cash.

The BJP had claimed that Mr Soren had gone ‘missing’ and the party’s Jharkhand chief, Babulal Marandi, had also shared a poster seeking information about Mr Soren and announcing a reward of Rs 11,000 for information on his whereabouts.

The chief minister, however, appeared in Ranchi on Tuesday and alleged that searching his home in his absence on Monday was  “uncalled for” and “unconstitutional”. His party also said that the Enforcement Directorate had accepted Mr Soren’s request to question him at his Ranchi home on Wednesday.

‘Maligning Community’

In his complaint, Mr Soren refers to himself as a “member of Scheduled Tribe” and mentions a few people by name –  Mr. Kapil Raj, Mr. Deovrat Jha, Mr. Anupam Kumar, Mr. Aman Patel – as well as “unknown others” and “all officers of the Directorate of Enforcement, Ranchi Zonal Office, having their office at Hinoo, Ranchi”.

He claimed the search operation at the Jharkhand Bhawan in New Delhi harassed and maligned him and his entire community.

Mr Soren said he was in Delhi on Saturday and Sunday and found out on Monday that the search was carried out on the premises. “This purported search was without any notice to me nor was my presence required on 29th January 2024 at New Delhi by the abovenamed persons,” the chief minister said in his complaint.

“In fact, the abovenamed persons had required me to be present at Ranchi on 29th and 31 January 2024,” he added.

‘BMW Not Mine’

Mr Soren also claimed that the officers had leaked “selective misinformation” that a blue BMW car seized from the premises was his and a huge amount of illicit cash belonging to him had also been found.

“I am not the owner of the car of BMW make which the abovenamed persons claim to have seized. I do not own any illicit cash. The abovenamed persons and unknown others who are not members of any Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe have done the aforesaid acts intentionally to humiliate me in public,” the chief minister alleged.

“My family members and I have suffered and experienced immense mental, psychological and emotional harm because of the acts committed by the above-named persons and unknown others who are not members of any SC or ST. I call upon you to register this FIR and take steps in accordance with law,” he said in the complaint.

No Town Planning Officer in Mancherial for 5 months

Mancherial: Mancherial municipality, a Grade-I and one of the major civic bodies in erstwhile Adilabad district, has had no town planning officer (TPO) for the last five months, hitting services and causing inconvenience to building plan applications.

The municipality’s town planning officer Satyanarayana was transferred to Nizamabad in September. Since then, it is relying on two town planning supervisors (TPS) who are also in-charges of Bellampalli, Naspur and Ramagundam civic bodies. While one TPS is able to discharge duties for four days, the other is working here for two days in a week.

The supervisors are sometimes busy with court cases and take leaves, resulting in piling up of applications. Due to the crunch of officials in the planning wing, applicants are struggling to build new houses. They are running from pillar to post to secure the permissions from the authorities even after furnishing relevant documents.

Some of the applicants are managing to obtain it with the help of their councilors and top officials. A major portion of them are forced to wait for a long time to get approval for construction of new houses. The delay in giving a nod to new houses is irking the applicants, who are unable to get loans from banks and to realise their dreams of building a home.

As per norms of the amended Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019 an applicant should get permission to construct within 21 days if he or she submits relevant documents such as document of ownership, link documents, market value certificate and Encumbrance Certificate and building plan (not mandatory up to 500 sq meters and height up to 10 meters).

When asked, Municipal commissioner A Maruti Prasad admitted that the civic body had no TPO for five months. The municipality was depending on the two supervisors. He, however, said steps were being taken to clear the applications with regard to house permissions at the earliest and to avoid inconvenience to applicants.

The municipality earns Rs 17 crore through property tax per annum. It sees somewhere between 40 and 50 applications for new houses per month. The annual outlay of general budget is Rs 60 crore for 2022-23 fiscal, while Rs 50 crore for 2021-22 financial year. Population of the town is 1.10 lakh as per 2011 census.

Ex-Russian Pres. suggests Japanese officials commit suicide

“Those of the samurai who feel especially sad can end their life in a traditional Japanese way, by committing seppuku. If they dare, of course,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Seppuku, also called harakiri, is a form of ritualistic suicide, News Week reports.

His inflammatory message came after Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida delivered a speech to his country’s parliament earlier in the day about signing a peace treaty with Russia to formally end World War II.

The dispute over the Kuril Islands is one of the main reasons why Russia and Japan have never signed such a treaty. The islands, which Japan calls the Northern Territories, are located in the Pacific Ocean between Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula and the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Soldiers from the Soviet Union seized four of the islands at the end of World War II, and the land has been claimed by both Russia and Japan ever since.

According to Kishida, Tokyo is “fully committed” to negotiating a peace treaty with Moscow, but Medvedev shut down the proposal unless Japan accepts the Kuril Islands as part of Russia.

Sarfaraz To Make Test Debut vs England? India Coach's 'Tough' Response

India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour on Wednesday said it “will be tough” to pick one among Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar in the second Test against England. The match begins here from Friday, with hosts India seeking to draw parity after losing the series opener in Hyderabad. After the first game, India faced injury concerns with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul being ruled out of the second Test, in addition to the absence of star batter Virat Kohli. This forced the selectors to add uncapped Sarfaraz Khan, Sourabh Kumar and Washington Sundar to the squad, and Rajat Patidar also made the team.

“It will be a tough choice. What value they bring to the team, of course, is that they are superb players. We have seen how well they have done in domestic cricket in the last few years,” Rathour said of the reinforcements during a press conference.

“So on these kind of wickets, I think they can really add a lot of value to the team.” He added, “If we have to pick just one out of them, of course, it would be tough. But, that decision will be made by Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma.” The playing XI will be finalised keeping in mind the conditions.

“It (pitch) is difficult to predict. It will turn, maybe not from the first day, but eventually, it will turn. That’s how the wicket looks like.”

‘No question of recovery’

India slipped to fifth place on the World Test Championship (WTC) table following the loss in Hyderabad and the hosts would be desperate to bounce back here.

Rathour said that more than recovery, the players need to learn and move on.

“There’s no question of recovery. You keep learning every game that you play. Of course, we could have done better in batting, bowling and fielding. A lot of discussions and ideas are being shared, preparing well and hoping to do well in the next game.” He expressed confidence in the players’ ability to bounce back and cited India’s unbeaten record in Test series at home since 2012.

“We keep talking about our batters (not scoring enough), but India has been winning a lot of series at home. We haven’t lost a series at home for 12-13 years.

“It means we are putting up more runs than the other teams. These are tough conditions to score runs, but I’m sure that the batters will find a way.”

‘Don’t think players require too much coaching’

At this level, Rathour said the players just need to act as per the situation.

“Once you come to this level, I don’t think you require too much coaching. It’s about reading the situations and making smarter decisions.

“As long as they are asking the right questions and receiving the right answers, there is no chance of over-coaching,” he concluded.

Brazil Man Dies After Eating Poisonous Pufferfish Given As A Gift

A man from Brazil died after consuming poisonous pufferfish that has enough venom to kill 30 human beings, as per a report in the New York Post. Magno Sergio Gomes, aged 46, was given the fish as a gift by an unidentified friend, though it’s still unknown where it came from exactly. His sister Myrian Gomes Lopes said the incident took place over the weekend in Aracruz, Espirito Santa and “Magno had never cleaned pufferfish before.”

The man and his friend had never handled the fish before, but they cut the fish, took out the liver, boiled it, and ate it with lemon juice. In less than an hour, both started feeling sick.
Ms Lopes said, “Magno started to feel numb in his mouth.”
The 46-year-old drove himself to the hospital and discovered that “the numbness spread and he went into cardiac arrest for 8 minutes”.

According to the US Centre for Disease Control, Magno was specifically affected by tetrodotoxin, an incredibly strong toxin found in the liver and gonads of pufferfish and other marine animals. The toxin, which the blowfish uses as a predator deterrent, is almost 1,000 times more lethal than cyanide and has no known treatment. It prevents the “transmission of signals from nerves to muscles” when consumed in large doses, paralysing the muscles and potentially causing death.

Ms Lopes stated that her brother was placed on life support. However, after spending 35 days in the hospital, during which the toxin paralysed his system, Magno died on January 27. “The doctors told our family that he died from poisoning, which had quickly travelled to his head. Three days after being admitted, he had several seizures, which greatly affected his brain, leaving little chance of recovery,” she said.

Although his friend survived the horrific incident, he is having trouble with his legs. “He’s not walking very well. He was neurologically impacted, but he is recovering,” Ms Lopes added.
