Israel kills dozens more Palestinian civilians in Gaza

Israel’s indiscriminate strikes have killed dozens more civilians across Gaza, with refugee camps being the main targets of the regime’s genocidal war.

More than 20 people were killed on Thursday after an air attack hit a residential building in the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip.

People and paramedics pulled out a toddler alive from the rubble.

Israeli air attacks also hit other residential areas across the Palestinian territory.

At least ten people were killed in the bombing of a house in Khan Yunis. Eight others lost their lives in an attack on the Maghazi refugee camp.

Health officials in Gaza said Israeli strikes have killed 210 Palestinians on Thursday.

At least 21,320 people, mostly women and children, have been killed during the war, which the Israeli regime launched on October 7 following an operation staged by Gaza’s resistance groups.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, UNRWA, has warned that 40 percent of Gaza’s population is at risk of famine amid Israel’s curbs on entry of much-needed aid trucks to the territory.

In addition, the UN Human Rights office expressed alarm at the rising rate of violence by Israeli settlers towards Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

The head of the UN office in the occupied Palestinian territories said comments by Israeli officials emboldened settlers and the regime’s forces to intensify violence against the Palestinians.

Ajith Sunghay added that the lack of accountability and impunity has also led to a spike in violence there.

He made the comments after the UN released a report calling on Israel to end unlawful killings and settler violence in the occupied West Bank.

In a report released earlier on Thursday, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights detailed the quickly worsening human rights situation in the West Bank, including East al-Quds, since October 7, when the regime’s military began bombing Gaza.

The office strongly urged Tel Aviv to end its unlawful killings and settler violence against the Palestinian population in the occupied territory.

The report confirmed the deaths of 300 Palestinians from October 7 to December 27, including 79 children, in the occupied West Bank, including East al-Quds, adding that of these, at least 291 Palestinians were killed by Israeli security forces, eight were killed by Israeli settlers, and one Palestinian was killed either by Israeli security forces or settlers.

WTC Table: India Lose Top Spot After Crushing Defeat To SA, Slip To…

Intimidated by pace and scarred by extra bounce, an under-prepared India suffered an embarrassing innings and 32 run loss to a far superior South Africa in the opening Test which ended inside three days at SuperSport Park, Centurion. Having scored 245 in the first innings, the Indian batters managed only 131 in 34.1 overs in the second innings after South Africa managed a handsome 408 in its first essay. South Africa thus took an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series and India’s dreams of winning a Test series in Rainbow Nation for the first time in 31 years lay in tatters.

The crushing loss saw India slip to the fifth position from the top spot in the updated World Test Championship (2023-25) table. Meanwhile, South Africa jumped to the top spot.

India now have 44.44 percentage points while the Proteas have 100 percentage points after winning their first game of the 2023-25 cycle.

Here is the updated WTC table:

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Only redemption for India now could be a 1-1 draw if they manage to square the series during the New Year’s Test in Cape Town.

Indian team put up a shoddy batting show, which signified its cluelessness and singular lack of preparedness for a tough assignment like this.

It has been a horrible last six to seven weeks for skipper Rohit Sharma, who lost World Cup final, was removed from Mumbai Indians captaincy two weeks back and now didn’t look like a leader that made him an instant favourite during the World Cup.

The team also looked a bit like its skipper, dishevelled and without any plan B for course correction.

As Bob Marley’s iconic “Don’t worry, Everything Gonna be Alright” blared from loudspeakers, the Indian team must be wondering how nothing went alright through entire course of the match.

The incomparable Kagiso Rabada (2/32 in 12 overs) along with left-arm seamers Nandre Burger (4/33 in 10) and Marco Jansen (3/36 in 7.1 overs) made the Indian batters hop, skip and jump as the capacity crowd enjoying their Christmas and New Year’s vacation lapped up every moment of action with great enthusiasm.

The result isn’t one bit surprising but the manner of abject surrender will certainly haunt Rohit Sharma for the longest time.

Since Adelaide Test match, which was also a ‘Boxing Day’ Test back in 2020-21 series where India were all-out for 36, never has an Indian team looked so ill-equipped to handle conditions that was diabolically opposite of what they get in sub-continent.

With India’s third and fourth pacers leaking runs galore, South Africa managed 408 in the first innings as Indians gave a lovely “farewell present” to Dean Elgar, who played an uncharacteristically attacking innings of 185 in his penultimate Test.

Even Marco Jansen (84 not out off 147 balls) made merry on a track where fast bowlers would have been licking their lips.

With 163 runs in arrears, there was little chance of survival on a track where the ball was flying around and also jagging a fair bit.

Once Elgar and Jansen batted India out of the match, least one expected was a decent fightback but save Virat Kohli (76), who showed why he is cut above the rest in terms of technique and temperament, others were found wanting.

He was the only one, who could partially conquer the bounce and got his body behind the line to cover the seam movement and also rode the bounce to get his 12 boundaries and a six.

The extra bounce found each and everyone wanting while skipper Rohit was done in by another picture perfect seam-up delivery by Rabada, which compelled the Indian skipper to close his bat face and see the delivery deviate just enough to peg back his off-stump.

Burger, who bowled a bit wide off the crease, consistently bowled back of length, either aiming the rib-cage or keeping at shoulder height outside the off-stump.

Yashasvi Jaiswal couldn’t sway out of the line, first innings centurion KL Rahul and Ravichandran Ashwin fished at deliveries that bounced extra, while Mohammed Siraj got a bumper that could have knocked his head off.

Ditto for Shardul Thakur, who looked terrified and scared trying to fend a Rabada bouncer, while Shreyas Iyer is certainly not a man for pacey and bouncy conditions.

Earlier veteran Elgar missed out on a well-deserved maiden double hundred but inflicted enough damage on India in company of young Jansen to bat the visitors out of the opening Test.

Elgar, whose previous highest Test score is 199, was inching towards his maiden double hundred before a faint tickle to a leg-side bouncer from Shardul Thakur brought an end to his innings.

But that didn’t deter the lanky Jansen, not exactly known for his batting prowess, from negotiating a deflated Indian attack that looked out of sorts and bereft of ideas.

The Elgar-Jansen pair added 111 runs for the sixth wicket.

The Indian bowlers were even more disappointing on the third morning with Shardul (1/101 in 19 overs) and Prasidh Krishna (1/93 in 20 overs) spraying all over the place, only to be mercilessly punished by the former Proteas skipper Elgar and Jansen.

The pair drove, pulled, cut at will and neither the old ball nor the semi-new ball could bring about any change in fortune for the visiting team bowlers.

Jasprit Bumrah (4/69 in 26.4 overs) and Mohammed Siraj (2/91 in 24 overs) once again were unlucky as they repeatedly beat the bat of Elgar and Jansen but didn’t have the rub of the green going their way.

Prasidh and Thakur were not only below-par but also missed both line and length.

Prasidh was inducted into the squad to hit the deck and generate extra pace off the surface, but he missed the trick by consistently bowling length balls. Even someone like Gerald Coetzee dispatched him into the stands.

Prasidh isn’t ready for Test cricket just like India didn’t look ready for the series.

How Kagiso Rabada Is Proving To Be A Thorn For Rohit Sharma In All Formats

Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s vulnerability against Kagiso Rabada continued with his dismissal in the first innings of the opening Test match in Centurion on Tuesday. He was again dismissed by the same bowler on Thursday in India’s second innings, that too for a duck. Rohit Sharma has been a prime target for Kagiso Rabada across all formats and has been troubled consistently. The South African paceman has now dismissed Sharma a total of 14 times across formats, which is the highest by any bowler.

New Zealand’s Tim Southee (12), Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews (10), Australia’s Nathan Lyon (9) and New Zealand’s Trent Boult (8) are the other bowlers who have dismissed Rohit Sharma the most number of times in international cricket.

Among 14 dismissals against Rabada, seven have come in Test cricket, making Rabada the fast bowler who has troubled Rohit Sharma the most in the longest format. Rabada has dismissed Rohit five times in ODI cricket and twice in T20Is. Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has removed Rohit Sharma nine times in 18 Test innings while Rabada has bowled in 10 Test innings against Rohit.

Batting on 5 on Tuesday, Rohit Sharma went for the pull shot against Rabada on the final ball of the fifth over only to pick out Burger at the long leg.

Rohit’s go-to shot, the pull, which is effective in limited-overs cricket and India, has been exploited by top-quality bowlers like Kagiso Rabada overseas. Rohit Sharma has been dismissed six times playing the pull shot in the last three years in England, Australia and South Africa from 48 such executions.

“It’s interesting that his go-to shot, the one shot that he plays in white ball cricket that puts the opposition on the back foot, has been Rohit Sharma’s nemesis in Test cricket. He likes to play it in the air and that is hazardous in Test cricket,” Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar said while speaking to Star Sports.

Rabada went on to claim five crucial wickets for just 41 runs in his 15 overs. His incisive spell included the dismissals of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur.
The South African pacer became the seventh Proteas bowler to achieve the milestone of claiming 500 international wickets with the five-wicket haul.

KL Rahul’s fighting century helped India post a challenging 245 runs on the board in the first innings despite Rabada’s fiery spell.

After Colorado, Another US State Blocks Trump From 2024 Presidential Polls

After Colorado, Another US State Blocks Trump From 2024 Presidential Polls

Maine joins Colorado which earlier this month also disqualified Trump from its Republican primary.

Washington:

The US state of Maine on Thursday blocked former president Donald Trump from its Republican presidential primary after the top election official ruled him ineligible due to involvement in the January 2021 assault on the US Capitol.

Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said in her ruling that the events of January 6, 2021 “occurred at the behest of, and with the knowledge and support of, the outgoing President.”

“The US Constitution does not tolerate an assault on the foundations of our government and (Maine law) requires me to act in response,” the ruling read.

Maine joins Colorado which earlier this month also disqualified Trump from its Republican primary, moves that will certainly be challenged in the US Supreme Court.

The rulings in both states invoked the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment, which bars from office anyone formerly sworn to protect the country who later engages in insurrection.

Trump’s campaign quickly slammed Bellows’ ruling as “attempted theft of an election and the disenfranchisement of the American voter.”

“Make no mistake, these partisan election interference efforts are a hostile assault on American democracy,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement, accusing President Joe Biden and Democrats of “relying on the force of government institutions to protect their grip on power.”

Cheung said Trump would appeal the Maine secretary of state’s decision.

"Cosmic Coquette": NASA Shares Pic Of "Bow-Shaped" Nebula. See Post

'Cosmic Coquette': NASA Shares Pic Of 'Bow-Shaped' Nebula Located 4,000 Light Years From Earth

NASA’s post has already garnered more than 203,000 likes.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) regularly captures stunning images of our universe, leaving space lovers mesmerized. The Instagram handle of the US space agency is a treasure trove for those who love to watch educational videos and fascinating images showcasing Earth and space. Now, in its recent post, NASA shared a picture of a “bow-shaped” nebula, located 4,000 light years from Earth. The planetary nebula, NGC 2440, spans more than a light-year and is energized by ultraviolet light from the central star, as per the space agency.

“Crafted from the material casted off from the dying Sun-like star as it enters its white-dwarf phase of evolution. Dense ridges of material are swept back from the nebula’s central star creating the bow shape,” NASA wrote in the caption of the post.

“Not just trendy — this star is one of the hottest as well, with a surface temperature of about 200,000 kelvin. The nebula spans more than a light-year wide and is energized by ultraviolet light from the central star,” the caption continued.

Take a look at the picture below:

The image shows a bow-tie-shaped nebula in pink-range colours against the blackness of space. “The center glows in lighter shades including details in blue. Tendrils of gas and dust glow in shades of gold expanding out creating the unique shape,” NASA wrote.

Shared just a few hours ago, NASA’s post has already garnered more than 203,000 likes and several comments. “I swear, outer space creates the most beautiful imagery,” wrote one user. “What’s the name of this bow shaped nebula? It’s giving cosmic coquette,” commented another.

“Unbelievable, it’s to amazing,” expressed a third. “Wow almost looks like a jellyfish,” added another.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, NASA shared a picture of the constellation Camelopardalis. The image, taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, showed outstretched arms of a large spiral galaxy about 100 million light-years away. This bright spiral galaxy also known as NGC 2441 was first seen by Wilhelm Tempel in 1882, a German astronomer with a keen eye for comets. In total, Tempel observed and documented some 21 comets, several of which were named after him, NASA said in its blog.
