Venezuela launches military drill over British warship threat

On Thursday, Maduro said he was launching “a joint action of a defensive nature in response to the provocation and threat of the United Kingdom against peace and the sovereignty of our country.”

His announcement came as Royal Navy patrol vessel HMS Trent is scheduled to arrive in Guyana, a British ally and former colony, on Friday, amid the South American country’s simmering territorial dispute with neighboring Venezuela over the Essequibo region, a Guyana foreign ministry source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Maduro said the deployment of the British warship breaches the “spirit” of an agreement reached between the South American neighbors earlier this month, during a meeting between Maduro and Guyana President Irfaan Ali, to avoid the use of force and avoid increasing tensions in the dispute.

“We believe in diplomacy, in dialogue, in peace,” Maduro said.

“But no one should threaten Venezuela, no one should mess with Venezuela. We are a people of peace, but we are warriors and this threat is unacceptable for any sovereign country,” he added.

“The threat of the decadent, rotten, ex-empire of the United Kingdom is unacceptable.”

The television broadcast accompanying Maduro’s statement showed fighter jets, ships, and ocean patrol vessels participating in the Venezuelan military drill.

According to Venezuelan military leaders, 5,600 uniformed personnel were ready for the operation.

According to the Guyana foreign ministry source, the ship would be in its territory for “less than a week” for open sea military exercises.

Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement the country “reserves all actions, within the framework of the Constitution and International Law, to defend its maritime and territorial integrity.”

Earlier this month, Venezuela held a referendum in which voters overwhelmingly supported their country’s claim to the Essequibo region, an oil-rich area of 160,000 square kilometers.

Maduro has since begun legal maneuvers to create a Venezuelan province in Essequibo and ordered the state oil company to issue licenses for extracting crude in the region.

Caracas claims the Essequibo River to the region’s east forms a natural border recognized as far back as 1777.

Essequibo is home to 125,000 of Guyana’s 800,000 citizens.

Opinion: Opinion: Can A Bharat Jodo Yatra 2.0 Help Congress In 2024?

Invites to the Ram Temple consecration in Ayodhya have sent the Opposition on a tailspin. The Left parties, as expected, have spoken against the event. Sharad Pawar, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and Uddhav Thackrey have voiced their reservations. Though the Congress has not disclosed its view, the statement from Chicago by overseas Congress chief Sam Pitroda, considered Rahul Gandhi’s mentor, is an indication of the party’s dilemma.

The aura of Ayodhya’s Ram temple inauguration on January 22 will not be the only Hindutva surge. The Ayodhya judgment, which facilitated the temple’s construction, came on 9 November 2019. In July that year, during his visit to the United Arab Emirates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had succeeded in persuading the Abu Dhabi ruler to allot 17 acres of land to the Swaminarayan cult for a Hindu temple in Arabia. In mid-February, this temple too will be inaugurated during a ‘Festival of Harmony’ in Modi’s presence. UAE has an Indian population of 3.5 million.

In 1949, when the Ayodhya dispute escalated with the sudden appearance of a deity at the site, there was no Jana Sangh or BJP (Jana Sangh was founded in 1951). During an assembly by-election in Faizabad (renamed Ayodhya in 2018) the Congress nominated a seer, Baba Raghav Das, who defeated socialist stalwart Acharya Narendra Dev after a communally vitriolic campaign.

The site became a matter of dispute soon afterwards and a lock was installed at the premises, which was opened after a court order in February 1986 during the Rajiv Gandhi regime. The presence of union ministers and live Doordarshan coverage of the lock opening pointed at official culpability in the event. The Shilanyas (foundation stone laying) of the temple was done on the eve of the 1989 elections under the orders of the Congress regime.

While the Congress may like to distance itself from Ayodhya in 2024, Sam Pitroda’s wham from Chicago cannot eclipse the party’s vacillation. The BJP has been steadfast on its stand. It will be interesting to see if the Congress leaders invited to the function choose to attend or not.

‘Mandir’ is not the only agenda on which the BJP is pegging its 2024 strategy. The ‘labharthis’ or beneficiaries of government schemes are being targeted assiduously.

As the election year rolls in, it is incumbent upon the opposition to aim for replacing the incumbent government. The 28 non-BJP parties lined up on the INDIA bloc platform are hoping that like in 2004, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s “India Shining” campaign failed, 2024 will see the BJP unable to cross the halfway mark, throwing open the possibility of the return of coalition politics.

The Congress, which won 145 against the BJP’s 138 in 2004, was able to stitch together a motley coalition and form a government headed by Dr Mammohan Singh, remote controlled by the Sonia Gandhi-headed National Advisory Committee (NAC). The Congress interpreted that election result as a ‘mandate’ whereas it merely presented it an opportunity to govern. Governance-deficit or policy paralysis became the regime’s nadir a decade later.

2024 is not 2004. The BJP is not seeking a mandate now as a party bereft of Lok Sabha majority. In 2014 and 2019, Narendra Modi’s charisma, riding on Amit Shah’s election management juggernaut, ensured a clear majority for the BJP. The well-oiled machinery works 24×7, all 12 months, unlike the election preps of other parties that begin just before polls. The BJP’s clarity of purpose is pitted against an opposition mired in crosscurrents.

As the INDIA parties confabulate, devoid of an agenda and on the sole plank that Modi has to go, the BJP has been concentrating on rolling out its message through the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra (BVSY) vans crisscrossing the countryside since mid-November with the message of the government’s welfare schemes. It is a government programme that the BJP cadre are aiding and monitoring. As the vans travel, those who have not benefitted so far are identified and added to the list of beneficiaries (labharthis).

Modi has regularly interacted with the labharthis targeted by the yatra vans across the country. Interactions through video conferencing took place on November 30, December 9, 16, and 27. These meetings have been telecast and are being cascaded by the BJP’s cyber-warriors. The vans have been described by him as “Modi ki guarantee ki gaadi”.

The BJP under Modi has fulfilled manifesto promises made by Jana Sangh since its formation in 1952, like the abrogation of Article 370 and the adoption of a citizenship Act. The Ram temple was adopted as an agenda at Palampur by the BJP in 1987. The Article 370 decision has received the Supreme Court’s approval. The Ayodhya dispute, which began in 1858 and intensified in 1949, was resolve in the Supreme Court, which enabled the construction of the temple. BJP-ruled states like Uttarakhand have begun the spadework for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Governments have collapsed in the past after well-planned mass movements. The JP movement of 1974 set the stage for opposition unity and the Congress rout of 1977. The Bofors propaganda and mass mobilisation by VP Singh from 1987 onwards ousted Rajiv Gandhi in 1989. The Anna Hazare-led anti-corruption movement in 2011 gave birth to the Aam Aadmi Party and provided the backdrop for the defeat of Manmohan Singh by the BJP in 2014.

There is no mass mobilisation in the present day. The INDIA parties, during the recent parliament session when 146 MPs were suspended, threatened mass action. Only a one-day united protest at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar ensued. During the previous session, the MPs of these parties walked 200 meters on Vijay Chowk to express their angst. The opposition’s mobilisation is sans masses, only placards and protests within the secure confines of Lutyen’s Delhi have marked their anti-Modi shows.

Rahul Gandhi will now embark on his Bharat Nyay Yatra, which is the Bharat Jodo Yatra 2.0. It is claimed that his previous yatra yielded the Congress victories in Karnataka and Telangana. The yatra had passed through Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan as well.

On the one hand, the Congress is seeking crowd funding to meet its pecuniary crunch. On the other, a lavish bus journey across 14 states is being rolled out. In an election year, a political party keeps aside its resources for funding candidates.

Not only in strategy, but also in the deployment of resources, the Congress’s priorities seem lopsided. The response of INDIA allies to Rahul Gandhi’s yatra will be worth noting, considering it is Mallikarjun Kharge, not Rahul, who emerged as the focal point in the recent INDIA conclave.

The Nyay Yatra may provide additional branding for Rahul Gandhi when he addresses audiences abroad, along with the efforts of Sam Pitroda. But will it help rebuild the Congress brand?

Thousands Of Flowers With Lord Ram, PM Modi's Face For Big Ayodhya Event

Weeks before the inauguration of the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya, special offerings from across India including a 108-foot incense stick, a gold bow and arrow and a 2,100kg bell made of eight metals will soon be making their way to the temple town.

Among the exceptional elements that will adorn the new temple, a florist from Gujarat is offering unique flower arrangements to decorate the complex. The flowers will have Ram Lalla’s name and “Jai Shri Ram” printed on the petals and thousands of them will be placed near the deity’s idol.

The florist, Ashok Bansali, claims it took him four years to develop the technology to print words and even photos on flower petals. Holding up a bunch of pink roses, Mr Bansali showed off his creation.

On the outer petals are photos of PM Narendra Modi, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the words “Ram Lalla” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

“I was inspired by PM’s call to make in India, so I researched for four years to develop this printing technology. Each flower petal is printed on manually so it takes a long time to create a bunch of these. We are also planning to print similar photos on leaves of indoor plants that will be placed in the temple complex,” he said.

In 2020, for the ‘bhoomi pujan’ or groundbreaking ceremony of the temple, Mr Bansali displayed 500 of his floral creations. But this time the florist aims to replicate the prints in thousands of flowers.

“We have been asked to create 8000 to 10,000 of these flowers but since each petal has to be printed on manually, we are aiming to make 3,000 to 4,000 of these to offer to Lord Ram,” he said.

Preparations are in full swing for the mega ceremony which will be held over a span of seven days starting from January 16. Scores of workers from different parts of the country are hard at work at Ram Katha Park to meticulously put together flowers into artistic formations. The designs of these decorations are inspired by the image of Lord Ram, his bow and arrow, Lord Hanuman and religious tilak, among other patterns.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will join the grand ceremony in Ayodhya on January 22 and will address devotees from the man entrance to the temple.

Avesh Khan Added To India Squad For 2nd Test Against South Africa

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the decision to add pacer Avesh Khan to India’s squad for the second Test against South Africa as a replacement for Mohammed Shami who remains unavailable due to an injury. Shami was picked for the tour of South Africa but couldn’t prove his fitness in time for the start of the series. Shami missed the first Test in Centurion as the BCCI waited for him to regain full fitness. But, he was ruled out of the second Test too, prompting the board to name Avesh as his replacement.

The BCCI, in a release, said: “The Men’s Selection Committee has named Mr Avesh Khan as a replacement for Mr Mohd. Shami for the second Test against South Africa to be played from 3rd-7th January 2024 in Cape Town.”

Avesh has so far claimed 149 wickets in 38 first-class games at 22.65. He was a part of the Indian team that defeated South Africa in the three-match ODI series against South Africa before the Test series began.

At present, Avesh is with the India A side on their four-day tour match against South Africa A at Benoni, where he returned 23.3-5-54-5 to help bowl out the hosts for 263 in the first innings.

Avesh’s addition gives the Indian pace bowling unit a boost after the bowlers struggled to impose themselves in the Centurion Test. India skipper Rohit Sharma even called out the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishan and Shardul Thakur for their lacklusture performance, saying the trio needs to help Jasprit Bumrah.

“This was not a 400-run wicket and we gave too many runs. We sprayed the ball all around, but it happens. One can’t depend on one particular bowler (Bumrah), the other three pacers also needed to perform their roles, we could learn from how South Africa bowled,” Rohit said after the match.

Rohit admitted that although there wasn’t lack of effort but Bumrah couldn’t alone keep the pressure on hosts’ batters.

“Bumrah bowled well and we all know his quality. All he wanted was a bit of support which he didn’t get. That happens. All three tried hard, bending their backs but didn’t happen the way we wanted to. But games like these teaches you a lot as to what you want to do as a bowling unit,” the skipper observed.

India’s squad for 2nd Test:India’s squad for Tests: Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Prasidh Krishna, KS Bharat (wk), Abhimanyu Easwaran, Avesh Khan

Mickey Mouse Enters Public Domain After Nearly A Century

Mickey Mouse Enters Public Domain After Nearly A Century

Disney said it would “continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse.

Los Angeles:

Almost a century after his big-screen debut, Mickey Mouse enters the public domain Monday, opening the floodgates to potential remakes, spin-offs, adaptations… and legal battles with Disney.

The copyright on “Steamboat Willie” — a short, black-and-white 1928 animation that first introduced audiences to the mischievous rodent who would become emblematic of American pop culture — expires after 95 years, on January 1, under US law.

The date has loomed large on the calendars of everyone from filmmakers, fans and intellectual property lawyers to Disney executives, who in the past helped lobby to change law to prolong US copyright terms.

“This is a deeply symbolic, highly anticipated moment,” said Jennifer Jenkins, director of the Duke Center for the Study of the Public Domain.

Anyone is now free to copy, share, reuse and adapt “Steamboat Willie” and “Plane Crazy” — another 1928 Disney animation — and the early versions of the characters that appear within them, including Mickey and Minnie.

A vital caveat is that later versions of the characters, like those in 1940 film “Fantasia,” are not in the public domain, and cannot be copied without a visit from Disney’s lawyers.

But artists would be free, for instance, to create a “climate change awareness version” of “Steamboat Willie” in which Mickey’s ship runs aground on a dry riverbed, or a feminist retelling where Minnie takes the wheel, said Jenkins.

That would echo imaginative re-uses of other characters whose copyrights recently expired such as Sherlock Holmes and Winnie-the-Pooh.

– ‘Legal skirmishes’ –

But it will not be plain sailing.

In a statement to AFP, Disney said it would “continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright.”

Indeed, the version of Mickey in “Steamboat Willie” is a spindly, roguish creature who would not be recognizable to many younger viewers.

“What’s in the public domain is kind of a frightful little black-and-white animal,” said Justin Hughes, a professor at Loyola Law School.

He added: “The Mickey Mouse that is most familiar to current generations of Americans will remain under copyright protection.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some legal skirmishes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Disney out there educating people on that point.”

Cease-and-desist letters could be sent to artists producing “high-budget fan art” if they use elements from later Mickey cartoons, such as red shorts and white gloves, he predicted.

Additionally, while the copyright has expired, the trademark has not.

Copyrights prevent the unlicensed copying of the creative work itself, for example books, films and characters. They expire after a set time.

Trademarks guard the source of a work, preventing anyone else from making a product that could mislead consumers into thinking it came from the original author. They can be renewed indefinitely.

Disney said it will “work to safeguard against consumer confusion caused by unauthorized uses of Mickey and our other iconic characters.”

The company has even added a clip from “Steamboat Willie” to the opening sequence of every Walt Disney Animation Studios film.

“They were very smart folks at Disney — they realized that the best thing to do was to establish that iconic sequence of Steamboat Willie as a trademark,” said Hughes.

Anybody using the classic image of Mickey at the helm of the boat on shirts, caps or mugs could be open to legal action, he said.

– ‘Circumvent’ –

Other experts such as Jenkins remain more bullish about public domain freedoms.

“Our Supreme Court has made clear that you can’t use trademark rights to circumvent what copyright expiration allows,” she said.

Both sides agree that the law is likely to be tested in court soon.

Anyone hoping to cash in on Disney’s beloved mascot “should move cautiously and with counsel,” added Hughes.

In the short term, novelty and shocking adaptations, similar to recent high-profile slasher film “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey,” are likely to grab the headlines.

But copyright law should ensure artists can use characters like Mickey to create enduring works, just as Shakespeare has been adapted to make modern classics from “West Side Story” (a retelling of “Romeo and Juliet”) to “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,” (Tom Stoppard’s exploration of the fates of two minor characters from “Hamlet”), said Jenkins.

“I’m interested to see what happens in 2024,” she said.

“But I’m even more interested to see what we’re still talking about and thinking about and teaching and writing about and sharing with our children in 2054.”

Congress Puts Bar Codes Behind Chairs For Crowdfunding At Nagpur Rally

Congress Puts Bar Codes Behind Chairs For Crowdfunding At Nagpur Rally

The pamphlet behind the chairs featured Rahul Gandhi’s image.

Nagpur:

The Congress put bar codes behind the chairs for crowdfunding during a rally in Maharashtra’s Nagpur on Thursday.

As a part of the Congress Crowdfunding Campaign ‘Donate for Desh’, which was launched earlier this month, a barcode was pasted behind all the chairs on the ground and attendees of the ‘Hain Taiyyar Hum’ rally were urged to donate.

The pamphlet behind the chairs featured Rahul Gandhi’s image along with a bar code.

The pamphlet read, “In this struggle of 138 years for the formation of a better India, Congress needs you. India needs you. Scan now to donate.”

The pamphlet further mentioned that among all the donors, five “lucky donors” will be awarded a donation appreciation certificate by Rahul Gandhi.

Rahul Gandhi in his address at the ‘Hain Taiyyar Hum’ rally exuded confidence that the grand old party will win elections in Maharashtra and across the country.

“This is a fight of ideologies. Together we are going to win elections in Maharashtra and the country,” Gandhi said.

The Congress leader, during his address, also mentioned that there is an ongoing conflict between two opposing ideologies in the country.

“There is a fight of ideologies going on in the country. People think that it is a political fight, a fight for power, it is, but the foundation of this fight is of ideology, of two opposing ideologies. (Desh mai vichardhaara ki ladai chal rahi hai, logo ko lagta hai rajneetik ladai hai, satta ki ladai hai, vo hai, magar iss ladai ki neev jo hai vo vichardhara hai, do vichardhara hai,” Rahul Gandhi said.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, while speaking to ANI about the ‘Hain Taiyyar Hum’ rally, said, “I think today the eyes of the entire country were on the Congress party and on the day of its foundation day, the party has done a very good job giving the message that we are ready to fight in defence of the Constitution and democratic values of this country. We are committed to the unemployed youth and farmers of the country.”

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also spoke to ANI about the Nagpur rally and said, “Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi today sounded the trumpet of 2024 Lok Sabha elections. There will be a meeting of the PCC president and CLP leaders in Delhi on January 4, 2024, and the route for Bharat Nyay Yatra, which will start under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, will be finalized.”

The Congress kickstarted its campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with the ‘Hain Tayyar Hum’ rally in Nagpur on Thursday.

The Grand Old Party also celebrated their 139th Foundation Day on December 28.

Iran, Russia to sign national currency deal in first quarter

“Our exports to Russia are lower than imports… Our effective measures [to change the situation] include the signing of a currency agreement between Iran and Russia in the first quarter of the next year,” Farzin was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.

Earlier this week, Farzin paid a two-day visit to Moscow, where he held a meeting with Russian Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina.

Farzin and Nabiullina agreed to open a credit line worth 6.5 billion rubles ($73.45 million) so that Iran could import necessary Russian goods.

On Wednesday, the Tasnim news agency reported, citing the Central Bank of Iran, that the country’s Bank Sepah opened the first foreign letter of credit for importing Russian goods after the US Justice Department had reinstated the sanction regime against the republic.

Syrian repels another Israeli missile attack on Damascus

According to the source, the Syrian air defense systems opened fire on enemy targets. “Syrian anti-aircraft gunners managed to repel the Israeli aggressive attack, some of the enemy’s missiles were hit on the approach to the capital,” the defense official said, Sputnik reported.

He specified that the attack on Damascus took place at 1:20 a.m. (10:20 p.m. GMT) from the direction of the Golan Heights. “As a result, there was damage, there were no manpower losses,” the spokesman said.

Earlier on Thursday, Israeli jets struck the outskirts of the Syrian capital at 11:05 p.m. local time (8:05 GMT). Syrian air defenses hit most of the Israeli missiles. The Al Hadath TV channel said that the strikes targeted Damascus International Airport, which resumed operations two days ago after being knocked out by an Israeli airstrike on November 26.
