"Doesn't Really Matter": Cummins On Hafeez's "Better Cricket" Comment

Melbourne :

Australia skipper Pat Cummins played down Mohammad Hafeez’s remarks about Pakistan playing “better cricket as a team” during the second Test on Friday. Pakistan stood in pole position to emerge triumphant when they were 219 for 5 and needed 98 runs for a series-levelling victory as the match seemed poised to be a cliffhanger. But Australia skipper Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc bowled a remarkable fast bowling spell as they took the host to a second consecutive triumph with a 79-run victory. After the game, Hafeez who was emotionally charged declared that Pakistan were better and said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo, “We played better cricket as a team. I’m proud of that. The way the team had the courage to attack this game in the best possible way. If I sum up the game, the Pakistan team played better than the other team in general. Our batting intent was better, and while bowling, we were hitting the right areas. Yes, we made some mistakes that cost us the game but as a team, I believe that there were a lot of positives, enough to win the game but unfortunately, at the end, we didn’t win the game.”

Cummins replied to Hafeez’s remarks and said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo, “Cool. Yeah, they played well, but glad we got the win. Doesn’t really matter, does it? [if they were the better team]. It matters who wins at the end.”

During Australia’s victory, Pakistan ended up conceding 52 extra runs in the first innings through bowling inaccurate deliveries and that too in a game where Australia’s first-innings lead was 54.

Pakistan’s losing wickets in a heap in red-ball cricket once again troubled them, especially in the first innings when they lost 5 wickets for just 46 runs.

“This game, we were very close but we couldn’t win. We made some mistakes, conceding 52 extras which really hurt us. And then crumbling from 124 for 1 to lose five main batters, that was a crucial moment we couldn’t win in the game. And then Australia were 16 for 4, we dropped a couple of catches that should have been taken,” Hafeez said.

“If we had taken our chances and won those crucial moments, perhaps this match would have ended earlier and we would have won. But this is the way the game goes; if you make a mistake this game can hurt you,” Hafeez added.

Pakistan will look to walk away with at least a single win as they face Australia in the final Test of the three-match series on January 3 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

China's New Amended Criminal Law Punishes Those Giving Bribes To Officials

China's New Amended Criminal Law Punishes Those Giving Bribes To Officials

Xi Jinping has been continuing with the anti-corruption campaign (File)

Beijing:

Days after President Xi Jinping exhorted people to maintain personal integrity, China on Friday amended its criminal law to punish those giving bribes to officials as part of its anti-corruption drive.

An amendment to the Criminal Law was passed by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s top legislature.

The amended law, which will take effect on March 1, has intensified the fight against bribe-givers, stating that those offering bribes repeatedly, to multiple people, or parties involved in major national projects should be harshly punished.

People who give bribes to staff members of supervisory, administrative, or judicial departments, or bribe in fields such as environment, finance, safety production, drug and food, social insurance, rescue relief, education, or healthcare, also need to face severe punishment, the law added.

On December 4, President Xi warned senior ruling Communist Party officials to maintain personal integrity, set strict rules for relatives to keep them away from corruption and refrain from blindly following “foreign examples” and reckless actions.

The top officials “must set strict rules for their family members, relatives, and staff workers around them when it comes to the efforts against corruption,” Xi told a meeting of the Politburo of the ruling Communist Party of China.

Since he took over the leadership of the party in 2012, Xi has been continuing with the anti-corruption campaign, in which, according to official media accounts, over a million officials, including several top military generals, were punished.

The intensity of the campaign also attracted criticism that Xi made effective use of it to silence his critics and rivals within the party and the government.

Meanwhile, the Standing Committee of the NPC, which is restricted to a smaller number of legislators, also announced that the annual session of the Parliament will be held on March 5, next year.

The NPC, along with the national advisory body, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) every year will hold their annual sessions to conduct legislative business for about a fortnight.

During the session NPC, regarded as the rubber stamp parliament for its routine approval of the proposals of CPC, will pass the annual budget for the country, including the defence expenditure, besides the work report of Premier Li Qiang.

'Taking Necessary Measures': India As Tensions Rise In Red Sea

India said it is “carefully evaluating” all aspects of unfolding situation in Red Sea (Representational)

New Delhi:

India values the free movement of commercial shipping and is closely evaluating all aspects of the unfolding situation in the Red Sea, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, however, also added that New Delhi is not part of any multilateral initiative or operation in or around the Red Sea.

Notably, tensions have brewed in the Red Sea after Houthi rebels stepped up attacks on shipping vessels in the Red Sea as a mark of ‘protest’ against Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip.

Addressing the weekly briefing, Bagchi said, “As we said earlier, we value the free movement of commercial shipping, which is one of the fundamental principles underpinning global commerce. We are carefully evaluating all aspects of the unfolding situation in that region. Our defence forces are taking necessary measures in this regard”.

“But I’m not aware that India is part of any multilateral initiative or operation presently in or around the Red Sea,” he added.

Notably, the Iran-backed Houthis have attacked numerous vessels over recent weeks, saying they are targeting ships in the Red Sea “with links to Israel” in protest against its military offensive in Gaza. The group has warned against sailing towards the area, Al Jazeera reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, the US said that it had shot down twelve attack drones and five missiles, which it claimed were launched by the Iran-backed Houthis.

There was no damage to ships in the area or injuries reported, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

The USS Laboon, a guided-missile destroyer, and F-18 fighter jets from the Eisenhower carrier strike group are in the southern Red Sea as part of a US-led coalition meant to protect shipping lanes from attack by the Houthis in the key Bab el-Mandeb strait, according to The Times of Israel.

In a major development, oil major BP temporarily paused all transit through the Red Sea citing security concerns. The alternative route for ships avoiding the Suez Canal is to take the much longer trip around Africa, Al Jazeera reported.

In the wake of the situation, the US announced the creation of an international coalition against Houthi attacks on international maritime trade in the Red Sea, earlier this month, The Hill reported.

Operation Prosperity Guardian will involve the navies of Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles, Spain, the UK and the US. The task force falls under the Combined Maritime Forces, a multinational alliance tasked with defending the world’s shipping lanes.

New Delhi:

The weather department on Friday issued a “cold-day” alert and said “dense to very dense fog” is likely to be witnessed in Delhi-NCR for the next two days.

The maximum temperature of the national capital settled at 19.8 degrees Celsius on Friday, a notch below the season’s average.

Trains and flights are operational, but transportation was impacted due to dense fog in the city.

Train services were impacted due to the fog for the third day, with 11 Delhi-bound trains delayed.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 10.7 degrees Celsius, four notches above the season’s average.

The IMD has said there is a high probability of a “cold wave” in isolated pockets of Delhi, starting from the second week of January.

The weather department indicates a substantial likelihood, ranging from 68 to 100 per cent.

“Cold-day conditions are very likely in some to many parts of Delhi on December 30 and 31,” the IMD said.

Humidity levels oscillated between 84 per cent and 100 per cent.

The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 382, in the “very poor” category, at 4 pm.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 19 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively on Saturday.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered “good”, 51 and 100 “satisfactory”, 101 and 200 “moderate”, 201 and 300 “poor”, 301 and 400 “very poor”, and 401 and 500 “severe”.
