Hamas refutes Israeli claims about 'discussion of prisoner exchange'

Osama Hamdan, the Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas’ senior representative in Lebanon

Hamas refutes the Israeli regime’s claims of taking place of “discussion of prisoner exchange” between the Gaza Strip-based Palestinian resistance movement and Tel Aviv.

“There is no discussion of prisoner exchange before stopping the aggression as Israel propagates,” Osama Hamdan, senior Hamas’ representative in Lebanon, said on Friday.

“The occupation is attempting to leak ideas that suit its narrative and are not true to alleviate internal pressure,” he added.

Gaza’s resistance movements took hundreds captive during an operation they staged against the occupied territories, dubbed Operation al-Aqsa Storm, on October 7.

The regime began taking the coastal sliver under an unrelenting genocidal war following the operation.

At least 21,320 people, mostly women and children, have been killed during the Israeli military campaign so far.

During a Qatari- and Egyptian-mediated temporary ceasefire that took effect earlier during the war, Israel released 240 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 105 people, who were released by Hamas.

Hamdan’s remarks did not mark the first time, when Hamas insists on complete cessation of the Israeli onslaught before another exchange could take place.

“There is no concrete idea, but the backbone is a complete and comprehensive cessation of aggression,” he noted, asserting, “We possess the tools and capabilities to force the imposition of a ceasefire.”

“The only way out of the Israeli impasse is to stop the aggression and make concessions.”

Carlo Ancelotti Snubs Brazil, Commits To Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti extended his contract with Real Madrid to June 2026 on Friday which would rule him out of becoming Brazil national coach. “Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti have reached agreement on the extension of his contract till June 30, 2026,” Real said in a statement. It had been reported in July this year that 64-year-old Ancelotti would become the first foreigner to coach Brazil in almost 60 years once he saw out his present Real contract next year. The Brazil Football Confederation had named Fernando Diniz as the temporary manager before they anticipated Ancelotti taking control for the 2024 Copa America. Ednaldo Rodriguez, the then president of the CBF, held months of negotiations with Ancelotti, who had previously stated the Real job would be his last in football.

However, it appeared one of the most glamorous and challenging jobs in football had brought a change of mind.

“We went after him not only due to his record, but also because he is a decent person,” Rodrigues told beIN Sports earlier this year.

“Those who have worked with him say that he is open, cultured, and he appreciates Brazilian football.”

However, under Diniz Brazil’s woes on the pitch have continued and the team currently occupy the sixth and final regional qualifying spot for the 2026 World Cup.

The CBF did not wish to comment on the news about Ancelotti when contacted by AFP on Friday.

Ancelotti for his part never verbally confirmed that he had agreed to become Brazil coach.

“I am still here,” he told the press on October 21.

“There are a lot of rumours, but I think everything will be clearer soon.

“Obviously as I have repeatedly said, I am very happy at Real Madrid.

“I am an egotist, of course,” he added drily.

Compared to Brazil, Real’s results this season have been largely positive — they top La Liga and eased into the Champions League knockout rounds with six wins from six matches.

Ancelotti is regarded as one of the greatest coaches of all time.

He has won the Champions League four times — twice with AC Milan and twice with Real Madrid.

He has won domestic league titles with Real and Milan, in England with Chelsea, in Germany with Bayern Munich and in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

Petition Against Ex-Pak PMs Including Nawaz Sharif In Graft Case Dismissed

Petition Against Ex-Pak PMs Including Nawaz Sharif In Graft Case Dismissed

There are speculations that Nawaz Sharif is going to become Pak’s PM for fourth time (File)

Lahore:

A court in Pakistan on Friday dismissed a petition seeking disclosure of Toshakhana gifts (received from heads of the states) against all former premiers, including Nawaz Sharif and former lawmakers, and not just Imran Khan.

Petitioner Tanveer Sarwar had requested the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) Justice Raheel Kamran to issue directives for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to “allow criminal complaints against all former premiers and lawmakers,” who are contesting the February 8, 2024 polls but did not show details of Toshakhana gifts they received in their assets submitted to the ECP in their nomination papers.

Mr Sarwar said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s founder Imran Khan was handed down three-year imprisonment in the Toshakhana case for “non-disclosure of the details of state gifts in his assets.”

On the contrary, former prime ministers such as Nawaz Sharif, Yousaf Raza Gillani, and Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, and former president Asif Zardari did not disclose the details of their Toshkhana gifts but “they are contesting upcoming polls,” he claimed.

“The ECP is prejudiced only against Imran Khan but is not taking any action against the above-mentioned persons,” the petitioner said and requested the court to stop the ECP from “selective prosecution.” After hearing the arguments of the petitioner, the judge dismissed the petition as being not maintainable.

Despite the question of a 10-year disqualification or lifetime ban on Nawaz Sharif handed down by the top court in 2017 in corruption cases, his nomination papers on both Lahore and Mansahra national assembly seats have been accepted.

Speculations are rife that Mr Sharif is going to become the prime minister for the fourth time on the blessing of the military establishment, which is accused of indulging in massive pre-poll rigging to stop Imran Khan’s PTI from returning to power. The powerful army has ruled over Pakistan for most of the period during its 75-plus years of existence.

2 Arrested In Gujarat For Online Job Scam, Rs 60 Crore Seized From Them

Police also recovered 33 debit/credit cards, six mobile phone from the accused. (Representational)

Mumbai:

Mumbai Police has arrested two cyber fraudsters from Gujarat who allegedly cheated people by offering them easy online jobs or `tasks’, an official said here on Friday.

The bank accounts used by the accused showed financial transactions of a whopping Rs 60 crore in three months and police has freezed Rs 1.1 crore in these accounts, he added.

Probe began after a 19-year-old student staying in the hostel of the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute here lodged a complaint stating that he had been duped by unidentified fraudsters.

They approached him through WhatsApp and offered him `part time’ online work or `tasks’ for a good amount of money. He was then added to a Telegram channel, the complaint said.

Later, the fraudsters asked him to deposit money in different accounts, promising even better returns. He lost Rs 2.45 lakh in this way before realising that it was a scam, the student told police.

Matunga police in the city tracked down the culprits from the bank accounts in which money had been deposited and arrested Rupesh Thakkar (33) and Pankaj Bhai Oad (34) from Gandhinagar in Gujarat a day ago.

Police also recovered 33 debit/credit cards, 32 cheque books of various banks, six mobile phone and 28 SIM cards from the accused who were booked under Indian Penal Code section 420 (cheating) and relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.

Further probe was on, the official said.

Peace Pact With ULFA Paves Way For Lasting Progress In Assam: PM Modi

Peace Pact With ULFA Paves Way For Lasting Progress In Assam: PM Modi

PM Modi on Friday hailed the peace pact signed by the central and Assam governments with ULFA.

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the peace pact signed by the central and Assam governments with ULFA, saying the agreement paves the way for lasting progress in the state.

The ULFA’s pro-talks faction on Friday signed a peace accord with the central and the Assam governments, agreeing to shun violence, surrender all arms, disband the organisation and join the democratic process.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was present along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at the signing of the accord in the national capital, called it a golden day for the people of Assam.

Tagging a post on the pact by Shah, Modi said, “Today marks a significant milestone in Assam’s journey towards peace and development. This agreement paves the way for lasting progress in Assam.” “I commend the efforts of all involved in this landmark achievement. Together, we move towards a future of unity, growth, and prosperity for all,” Modi said in his post on X.

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was formed in 1979 with the demand for a “sovereign Assam”. Since then, it has been involved in subversive activities that led to the central government declaring it a banned outfit in 1990.

The Arabinda Rajkhowa-led faction joined peace talks with the government on September 3, 2011, after an agreement for Suspension of Operations was signed between the ULFA and the central and the state governments.

AAP vs BJP After Delhi, Punjab Tableaux Rejected For Republic Day Parade

AAP vs BJP After Delhi, Punjab Tableaux Rejected For Republic Day Parade

Punjab tableau showing ‘Punjab’s contribution in Freedom Struggle’ during the 73rd Republic Day Parade

New Delhi:

Delhi Art, Culture and Languages Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Friday said the BJP-led central government rejected the tableaux of Delhi and Punjab for the Republic Day parade to “exact revenge on the AAP”, which governs the national capital and the border state.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Bharadwaj said the Centre has rejected Delhi’s tableaux for three consecutive years now.

The last time Delhi’s tableau featured in the Republic Day parade was in 2021. It showcased the Shahjahanabad redevelopment project, according to officials.

Mr Bharadwaj said Delhi’s tableau this year would have showcased schools in the city and the mohalla clinic model.

“The tableau of Delhi, which is the capital of the country, was rejected by the Centre. Its tableau was rejected for the 2022 parade and then for the 2023 parade and now it has been rejected again for the 2024 parade,” the minister said.

The theme of the Republic Day parade was “Nari Shakti” in 2023 and “Viksit Bharat” for 2024, he said.

“No one can say it’s a design competition. The Centre had given us some suggestions and we incorporated those (into the tableau proposal). If it would have given us more suggestions, we would have included those too,” Mr Bharadwaj said.

“Our tableau would have showcased schools and the mohalla clinic model,” he added.

Mr Bharadwaj said it’s not a coincidence that Punjab’s tableau proposal was also rejected.

“The Centre is doing this to exact revenge on the AAP,” he charged.

Regarding the “Viksit Bharat” theme provided by the Central government for the parade, he said, “Any state generally presents what aspects or items could represent the theme of a developed India in their tableau. India will develop through a good education system and better healthcare facilities.”

He further said, “The Delhi government included Delhi’s school system and mohalla clinics in their proposal. Despite this, the proposal for Delhi’s floats was rejected by the central government.” The Delhi minister also questioned the intentions of the BJP-led central government, stating that it is “persistently” exhibiting behaviour aimed solely at retaliating against the AAP.

“It’s not a coincidence that they not just rejected the tableau proposals given by the Delhi government but also those by the AAP-led Punjab government,” Mr Bharadwaj said.

He indicated that it can be understood from the Centre’s actions that the rejection of Delhi and Punjab’s tableaux proposals was not based on any deficiency or fault but rather due to animosity toward the AAP.

On Wednesday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann attacked the Centre over the non-inclusion of the state’s tableau in the parade and accused it of discrimination.

Eighty per cent of the selected states are ones ruled by the BJP, he alleged.

The BJP’s Punjab unit, in response, slammed Mr Mann on Thursday for politicising the non-inclusion of the state’s tableau. It also claimed that the AAP government had insisted that the tableau carry photos of Mr Mann and Mr Kejriwal.

Virendra Sachdeva, the BJP’s Delhi chief, accused the AAP of indulging in politics on events of national pride.

“AAP leaders know the truth but they are not telling it. January 26, and August 15 are events of national sovereignty and pride but Arvind Kejriwal is busy doing politics on this too,” he said.

“The actual reason for Delhi and Punjab’s tableaux being rejected is that he (Kejriwal) was using his pictures there and, hence, the screening committee rejected the proposals,” he added.

ISL: Krishna Brace Powers Odisha FC To Comeback Win Over Jamshedpur FC

Roy Krishna’s brace powered Odisha FC to pull off a dominant 4-1 win over Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24 in Bhubaneswar on Friday. The Kalinga Warriors’ talented and experienced attacking force clicked cohesively to put four goals past the Jamshedpur FC defence in the first half to clinch the win and continue their unbeaten streak to 11 games in all competitions. The visitors began the game strongly with Rei Tachikawa’s stunner from outside of the box to bag the opener in the 23rd minute.

However, the attacking trio of Roy Krishna, Isak Vanlalruatfela, and Diego Mauricio’s onslaught in the remaining 20-odd minutes helped Odisha FC to make a comeback in the game.

Krishna was the star of the show, playing a pivotal role in three of the four goals apart from Mauricio’s goal from the penalty kick. He first set up one for Isak in the 27th minute, which the youngster tapped in conveniently to bag the equaliser. Nine minutes later, the Fijian striker jumped upon a rebound of a shot by Mauricio to get his team a lead from the right-hand side of the box.

Mauricio got his due in the added time of the first half, earning a spot-kick due to a foul by TP Rehenesh and hammering it into the net to get Odisha FC’s third goal of the night.

After the home side’s attacker, Isak carved open the backline of Jamshedpur FC, later Krishna pulled off another neat finish to bring up the fifth goal of the night.

After the end of the final whistle, the Odisha-based side clinched a 4-1 win over the visitors.

Roy Krishna was named the ‘Player of the Match’ following his two-goal haul against Jamshedpur FC.

Odisha FC have rounded off the opening half of the ISL 2023-24 campaign with seven victories and three draws in 12 games. Their dominance has been a result of a free-flowing attacking unit, supported by a solid defensive setup that has conceded only 12 goals so far.

On the other hand, the Red Miners need to make some corrections to ensure that the second half of the campaign unfolds in a better way for them.
