India Got Consular Access To Baby In German Foster Care Last Month

Indian Officials Celebrated Diwali With Baby Ariha In German Foster Care

Arindam Baghchi said that consular access was given to the child in the second week of last month.

New Delhi:

Indian officials in Berlin celebrated Diwali last month with baby girl Ariha Shah, who has been living in a foster care in the German capital for over two years.

Ariha was placed in the custody of Germany’s Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt) on September 23, 2021 after the then seven-month-old baby suffered an accidental injury. She has been in foster care since then.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Friday said consular access was given to the child in the second week of last month and that Indian embassy officials celebrated Diwali with her.

India has been pressing for her early return to India arguing that it is important for the child to be in her linguistic, religious, cultural and social environment.

“This is an important issue. We continue to monitor it… We had consular access. We were able to share with the child items to ensure the immersion of the child in Indian culture as well as continued efforts to ensure that her rights are protected,” Mr Bagchi said at his weekly media briefing.

He was replying to a question on Ariha.

“We have been working towards cultural immersion of the child and resource materials relating to Indian festivals, customs and practices were handed over to the German authorities,” Mr Bagchi said.

“We remain in constant engagement with the German authorities to safeguard the child’s cultural, national identity and rights and to ensure her return to India,” he said.

The Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India in Berlin have been persistently advocating for the return of Ariha Shah to India.

To a question on Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s allegations that New Delhi is meddling in polls in that country, Mr Bagchi said the elections are an internal matter of Bangladesh.

“Our position on this has been consistent. The elections are domestic matters of Bangladesh and we believe it is for the people of Bangladesh to decide their own future,” he said.

“As a close friend and partner of Bangladesh, we would like to see peaceful elections there and we will continue to support Bangladesh for a peaceful and progressive nation,” he said.

Asked about reports of a Chinese research vessel visiting Sri Lanka, Mr Bagchi said: “We have said that we always monitor developments that have a bearing on national security and we take necessary measures.”

China urges regional alert as US plans to reclaim Pacific airfield

Illustrative photo shows the flags of the United Stated and China (L).

China’s Defense Ministry has asked the countries in the Asia-Pacific to be on high alert as the United States steps up military deployment in the region.

Beijing on Thursday urged the regional countries to be vigilant after reports of a US plan to revive a Pacific airfield that launched the atomic bombings of Japan in 1945.

“The Chinese military is paying close attention to moves by the United States, and will firmly safeguard China’s maritime rights, security and sovereignty in the region,” Wu Qian, a spokesperson at the defense ministry, said at a news conference.

“Its goal is for its own selfish gains and to maintain its hegemony. Its nature is to stoke confrontation,” the official said of the United States.

Earlier in December, a US air force general told Japan’s Nikkei Asia newspaper that the Pentagon will make “significant progress” towards reclaiming the Tinian North airfield from overgrown jungle vegetation in the coming months, as part of a plan to disperse aircraft across the Indo-Pacific region.

General Kenneth Wilsbach, commander of Pacific Air Forc, said the North Airfield “has extensive pavement underneath the overgrown jungle. We’ll be clearing that jungle out between now and summertime.”

“If you pay attention in the next few months, you will see significant progress,” he added, without providing a timeline for when the airfield will be in use.

“The United States continues to strengthen its Asia-Pacific deployments, this is full of a Cold War mindset,” Wu Qian said.

The airfield, abandoned after World War II, lies on Tinian Island, part of the Northern Mariana Islands, which is a US territory.

Mexico City:

Gunmen killed six people at a party in northwestern Mexico on Friday, including an alleged criminal believed to have been targeted in the attack, authorities said.

“Initial investigations indicate that it was a direct attack against the leader of a criminal group who had arrest warrants for attempted femicide, homicide, illegal deprivation of liberty and criminal association,” the Sonora state prosecutor’s office said.

It said the unidentified target was killed along with five others, while 26 people were injured in the early morning attack in the municipality of Cajeme.

Prosecutors said they were unable to confirm reports that the gathering was a 15th birthday party.

Cartel gunmen have a history of targeting social gatherings in Mexico, where more than 420,000 people have been murdered in a spiral of drug-related violence since 2006.

On December 17, gunmen opened fire at a Christmas party attended by young Mexicans in the central state of Guanajuato, killing 11 people.

Actor-Politician Vijayakanth Laid To Rest, Thousands Pay Last Respects

Actor-Politician Vijayakanth Laid To Rest, Thousands Pay Last Respects

Actor-politician Vijayakanth died on Thursday after a prolonged illness

Chennai:

Actor-politician Vijayakanth was laid to rest in Chennai with full state honours on Friday as thousands of his fans and followers paid their last respects. He died aged 71 on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

People walked for more than ten kilometres as Vijayakanth’s coffin moved from the Island Grounds in Chennai to the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) headquarters, where he was laid to rest in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and his cabinet ministers.

“After MGR (MG Ramachandran), he was the only actor who took up issues like corruption, and that struck a chord with masses,” Karthik, a fan from Vijayakanth’s hometown Madurai district, told NDTV.

Several other fans also reflected on the actor’s philanthropy and humane gestures.

Some fans also recalled how Vijayakanth, fondly called “Captain”, never let anyone visiting him go hungry and how ensured the same meal for everyone on the film sets, breaking the culture of special meals for the stars alone.

Many fans later became his followers after he made his political plunge in 2001.

Vijayakanth then went on to win the assembly elections in 2006, a year that turned out to be a game-changer for his party — DMDK — which won 29 seats in the 234-member house in alliance with AIADMK.

However, he fell out with AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa, which marked the beginning of the fall of his political fortunes as he shook hands with the BJP and a few other smaller parties floating a third front for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

His health then gradually deteriorated and the DMDK was not able to reclaim the lost ground.

Recently, the DMDK appointed his wife Premlatha as its chief, who now has the challenge to revive the party’s fortunes ahead of the 2024 General elections.
