Wishful thinking amid Gaza fiasco

The op-ed published by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday asked for a direct confrontation with Iran under the pretext that Tehran is “sowing chaos” in West Asia.

“The Iranian regime is at the center of most of the Middle East’s problems and much of global terror,” the former prime minister wrote. “Yet inexplicably, almost nobody is touching it.”

Bennett pointed out how Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement has lobbed countless rockets at the occupied territories, making them uninhabitable for Israelis, and how Yemen’s armed forces have been preventing ships from docking at the Port of Eilat in response to the regime’s complete siege of the Gaza Strip. He also pointed the finger of blame at Iran, for attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Syria, which continue to occupy the two Arab countries despite repeated calls from the governments and locals to leave the region.

While Iran has repeatedly clarified that its ties with resistance groups in the region resemble an alliance and that it has no authority over the groups, the nature of the relations is not the point of discussion here. What should be discussed is how Israel’s almost three-month war on the Gaza Strip, after an egregious defeat against Hamas on October 7, has only caused the regime to sink deeper into the mud as it struggles to find a way out of the crisis.

Earlier this month Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar said that members of the group’s military wing, known as al-Qassam Brigades, have so far targeted at least 5,000 Israeli soldiers and officers. He underlined that one-third of Israeli forces, around 1,660, were killed, while the rest had been permanently disabled or seriously wounded.

The figures were announced after Israel was forced to withdraw one of its most highly decorated infantry units, the Golani Brigade, from Gaza. Several Israeli analysts and former officials have so far confirmed the high number of Israeli casualties, while the politicians in power continue to hide and even deny them.

While Israel’s invasion of Gaza and its attempts to “eradicate Hamas” has so far spelled disaster for the regime, its relentless killing of Palestinian civilians and the vast carnage it has left behind has also dealt a serious blow to its reputation after years of big-budget propaganda campaigns aiming to cast Israel as the victim.

So as Israel feels like it has been boxed into a corner, it has begun new attempts to collate Western forces in order to transform the war in Gaza into a regional one with international reverberations.

Israel has already attempted to rile Iran and whip it into a pro-war fervor by assassinating a top IRGC advisor on Syrian soil on Monday. The officer named Sayyed Razi Mousavi is said to have been one of the close companions of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, an Iranian anti-terror icon that was killed during a US terrorist attack thought to have been espoused by Benjamin Netanyahu, whom Bennett shares his warmongering policies with.

In its next move, Israel tried to alert the world about an imminent military conflict with Iran after reporting a “blast” near its embassy in New Delhi, India.

While some political analysts inside Iran did get carried away by Israel’s moves and asked for an immediate response to the assassination, the decision-makers in the country once again proved their astuteness by reserving the right to respond to the attack “at the right time and the right place”.

Bennet’s declaration of his role in the assassination of IRGC member Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei in 2022, along with his claim of ordering an attack on a UAV base inside Iran, should be viewed as yet another desperate effort to provoke Iran into an expansive regional conflict.

“After Iran launched two failed UAV attacks on Israel in February 2022, Israel destroyed a UAV base on Iranian soil. In March 2022, Iran’s terror unit attempted to kill Israeli tourists in Turkey and failed. Shortly thereafter, the commander of that very unit was assassinated in the center of Tehran,” Bennet claimed in the op-ed, suggesting that he has been able to pick up on some Iranian analysts’ and officials’ miscalculations.

But even if Tehran gives Israel the excuse to ask for a concerted Western attack on Iran, it remains unlikely that such a scenario would play out.

The US.is currently bogged down in Ukraine and with Joe Biden trying to get elected as America’s president for the second time in 2024, a full-scale war with Iran, which could potentially decimate the entirety of West Asia and disrupt global oil supplies for several years, is the last thing his administration would have on the agenda.

Furthermore, the notion of “toppling” the Iranian government through sanctions and riots has proven to be unattainable in recent years, and no longer appears to be a viable option.

Regrettably, for Bennett, it appears that Israel is now left to confront the repercussions of its harrowing crimes against humanity.

Yemeni armed forces ‘eager’ to confront US in Red Sea: Ansarallah

A senior official of Yemen’s Ansarallah resistance movement says the country’s armed forces are “eager” to engage in a confrontation with the United States in case of escalating tensions in the strategic Red Sea.

Mohammad al-Bakhiti, a member of Ansarallah’s politburo, made the remarks on Friday, saying, “Our message to the enemies is that the Yemeni armed forces are eager to confront the main enemy, the United States.”

“Just as Yemen won the moral battle against the US coalition, it will win any military battle if it is attacked.”

The US administration has announced the planned formation of a multinational task force under the pretext of protecting shipping in the Red Sea following Yemen’s retaliatory attacks on Israeli-owned and -bound vessels in support of Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Ansarallah official underlined that, “If the US warships attack Yemen, they will be targeted directly and the Americans are aware of the seriousness of this decision.”

Pointing to the rejection of Arab and Muslim countries to join the US-led task force in the Red Sea, Bakhiti said, “Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates did not participate in the international coalition to protect Israeli ships and this is a positive point.”

The member of Ansarallah’s politburo described the Yemeni armed forces’ battle in the Red Sea as “defensive” but warned that it may change in the future if the war continues.

The popular resistance movement announced on Thursday that the international waterways as well as the Red Sea are secure for all passing vessels, except for Israeli ones or those heading towards the occupied territories.

Over the past month, the Yemeni resistance movement and Yemen’s Armed Forces have been staging missile and drone attacks against vessels heading towards Israeli ports in support of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, which has come under an unrelenting genocidal Israeli war.

On Wednesday, Yemeni Defense Minister Major General Mohammad al-Atifi warned Israel of a very harsh response if the genocidal war on Gaza does not stop.

“We are ready to deliver the harshest, most painful and powerful blow to the enemies if they continue to commit crimes against the Palestinian nation, or if they seek to violate and harm Yemen’s security and sovereignty.”

The Israeli regime launched its devastating war on Gaza on October 7 after the territory’s Palestinian resistance movements carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

The relentless Israeli military campaign against Gaza has killed more than 21,000 people, most of them women and children. Over 55,000 individuals have also been wounded.

The Yemeni forces have vowed to keep up their strikes until the regime stops the war and lifts a crippling siege that it has been enforcing on Gaza.

Aggressive statements of US leading to security implications

“If in Washington thought for a moment about ordinary Ukrainians, if there was at least a shred of compassion here, then we can clearly see the solution – immediately stop the hybrid war and thereby avoid numerous casualties,” TASS reported citing Antonov on Saturday.

“The ‘magic pot’ that has been talked about so much in the corridors of local [Ukrainian – TASS] government lately, will not become a panacea, but, on the contrary, will prolong the agony of the Kyiv regime,” the Russian diplomat stressed.

“Aggressive statements calling for an even more violent military confrontation lead to serious consequences not only for regional but also for global security. Historical responsibility for these actions will rest entirely with the United States,” he noted.

“The American reaction to the strikes of the Russian Aerospace Forces demonstrates the effectiveness of the special military operation,” the Ambassador said. “And it is noteworthy that the Americans themselves admit that Washington has managed to unite 50 states around itself, waging a hybrid war against Russia and throwing modern Western weapons to the front against the Russian Armed Forces.

“The task of our opponents has not changed – to defeat the Russian Federation on the battlefield, inflict economic defeat through numerous restrictions, and also to bring a split into society,” he stressed.

“Despite all efforts, the effect is the opposite. Over the past year, Russia has ‘concentrated,’ become more monolithic, and the effectiveness and combat readiness of the Armed Forces has sharply increased,” the diplomat stated.

“Any encroachments on Russia’s security will receive a decisive response, and our valiant Armed Forces will fulfill their duty to defend the Motherland,” Antonov added.

Banda Aceh: A strong and shallow undersea earthquake shook part of Indonesia’s Aceh province Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties.

The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.9 earthquake was centered 362 kilometers (225 miles) east of Sinabang, a coastal town in Aceh province at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency said there was no danger of a tsunami but warned of possible aftershocks. The agency put a preliminary magnitude at 6.3. Variations in early measurements of quakes are common.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 270 million people, is frequently hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because of its location on the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake on Nov. 21 killed at least 331 people and injured nearly 600 in West Java’s Cianjur city. It was the deadliest in Indonesia since a 2018 quake and tsunami in Sulawesi killed about 4,340 people.

In 2004, an extremely powerful Indian Ocean quake set off a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
