Hyderabad: Youth smokes weed in front of police station for Insta reel, jailed

Hyderabad: Smoking marijuana on the road in front of the Ramgopalpet police station and shooting a video of the act landed a youth in prison.

B Vamshi Krishna (25) had recorded the video, with a rap song in the background, for an Instagram reel.

He posted the video on his social media account, which instantly became viral, with many citizens criticising him for the unmindful act and tagging Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the city police on X.

The Ramgopalpet police booked a case and arrested Krishna on Friday. He was produced before a court, which sentenced him to simple imprisonment for eight days. He was shifted to the Central Prison in Chanchalguda.

As a counter, the police recorded a video of Krishna by collaging the moments of him smoking marijuana and later being shifted to jail, and posted it on their official social media account.

2nd ODI: Richa, Deepti's Efforts In Vain As Australia Women Seal Series

Richa Ghosh’s career-best 96 and Deepti Sharma’s 5/38 went in vain as Australia Women clinched a thrilling three-run win to take an unassailable 2-0 lead against India in their three-match ODI series in Mumbai on Saturday. Chasing 259, Ghosh led India’s reply with a fine 117-ball 96 featuring 13 fours but the hosts stuttered in the death overs to suffer their ninth consecutive defeat to Australia at home. India managed 255/8 in their 50 overs with Deepti (24 not out off 36 balls, 1x4s) and Shreyanka Patil (5 not out) at the crease when the match came to an end.

Apart from Ghosh’s heroics with the bat, India also had their vice-captain Smriti Mandhana providing early fireworks with a 38-ball 34 (3x4s, 1x6s).

Jemimah Rodrigues (44 off 55 balls) and Ghosh laid the foundation with an 88-run third wicket stand but could not deny Australia from maintaining their record in India of never losing a series.

In a contest wherein both teams dropped more than 10 catches combined, Litchfield eventually made the difference with two sharp catches after dropping one early on, which followed a fine knock of 63 in the first innings to top-score for her side.

Positioned at cover, Litchfield helped break the third-wicket stand to dismiss Rodrigues off Georgia Wareham (2/39) at a crucial juncture in the 34th over.

Later on, when Ghosh was one stroke away from her maiden ton, Litchfield pulled off another superb grab at cover off Annabel Sutherland (3/47) to deny her the feat and in effect, India a win.

Having kept wickets for all 50 overs of Australia’s first innings, the 20-year-old Ghosh batted with gusto and tremendous application, with her stupendous knock featuring strokes in all parts of the ground.

Ghosh also capitalised on two lifelines – one of which she got on the first delivery itself when Litchfield put down a tough chance at first slip soon after Yastika Bhatia (19) was dismissed.

Ghosh kept India in hunt with her partnership with Rodrigues, but Australia capitalised after finding a breakthrough. India’s hopes suffered a serious dent when Ghosh, who was cramping up in the later stages of her innings, fell in the 44th over and Amanjot Kaur (4) in the 46th.

With Deepti failing to get a move-on – she had contributed only eight runs in her 47-run stand with Ghosh – the task became even more challenging for the likes of Pooja Vastrakar (8) and concussion substitute Harleen Deol (1), who had replaced Sneh Rana for the remainder of the game in the second half.

Earlier, off-spinner Deepti Sharma stymied Australia’s surge with a stellar five-wicket haul but seven dropped catches by India allowed them to post a challenging 258 for eight.

Deepti exploited a dry and turning surface to a fine degree to return with figures of five for 38, but her hard work was undone by the hosts’ horrendous fielding.

She accounted for Ellyse Perry (50), Beth Mooney (10), Tahlia McGrath (24), Georgia Wareham (22) and Annabel Sutherland (23) for her career’s second five-for.

Alana King, who was dropped once each by Deepti and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, hammered three sixes to make an unbeaten 28 (17 balls) in a late surge to take Australia past the 250-run mark, which at one stage looked beyond the visitors.

Australia looked in complete command until the 22nd over, powering to 117 for one through a 77-run stand for the second wicket between Perry and Litchfield (63, 98 balls, 6x4s).

Hyderabad: Hyderabad is set to welcome the new year with a nip in the air as the prevailing dropping temperatures are forecasted to plummet even further in January.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a significant dip in minimum temperatures starting from January 3, ushering in a prolonged period of chilly weather across the city.

Dr. A Sravani, IMD scientist, shed light on the forthcoming weather patterns, stating, “There would be a drop in minimum temperatures.

After a brief respite for a few days, the chilly weather is expected to make a comeback post-January 12 in Hyderabad. There is no likelihood of rainfall during this period.”

She also highlighted the continuation of foggy conditions during early hours in the city for the foreseeable future.

As per recent recordings, the average minimum temperature in Hyderabad settled at 16.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Several areas witnessed lower temperatures, with Rajendranagar hitting 13.2 degrees Celsius, Bandlaguda at 14.4 degrees Celsius, Hayathnagar at 14.5 degrees Celsius, Bollaram at 14.5 degrees Celsius, West Marredpally at 14.6 degrees Celsius, BHEL at 14.7 degrees Celsius, and Quthbullapur at 14.9 degrees Celsius.

Russia calls for UNSC meeting over deadly Belgorod shelling

A UN Security Council meeting in connection with the shelling of Belgorod has been requested for 11:00 p.m. Moscow time (20:00 GMT) and Russia has demanded the participation of the Czech envoy to provide explanation regarding the arms supplies to Kiev, Russian Deputy Envoy to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy said on Saturday.

A Ukrainian strike on the Russian city of Belgorod has killed at least 14 people and more than 100 injured, the local media in Russia have cited authorities there.

The Ukrainian military’s “criminal” indiscriminate shelling of Belgorod region was designed to distract from its failures at the front, and will not be left unpunished, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced Saturday.

According to the MoD’s information, the strikes involved two Vilkha heavy MLRS-launched cluster munitions, as well as Czech-made Vampir MLRS rockets, with air defense systems intercepting the Vilkhas and most of the Vampirs, but several rockets getting through and remnants of the Vilkhas’ cluster components dropping from the skies, causing casualties and damage.

“In the event of a direct hit by the cluster munition-equipped Vilkha missiles on the city, the consequences would have been immeasurably more severe,” the Russian military said, characterizing the attack as an attempted “indiscriminate combined strike.”

Taiwan Presidential Debate Overshadowed By Discussions Over China Ties

Taiwan Presidential Debate Overshadowed By Discussions Over China Ties

Communist China has in recent years ramped up military pressures on Taiwan.

Taipei:

Taiwan’s presidential candidates clashed on Saturday over their positions on the self-ruled island’s relations with China, in a debate before an upcoming vote closely watched from Beijing to Washington.

Democratic Taiwan is two weeks from the pivotal election, the results of which could determine Taipei’s future ties with an increasingly bellicose China.

Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has vowed to take it by force if necessary, and has halted high-level communications with the administration of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.

Her Democratic Progressive Party has largely campaigned on a platform of sovereignty separate from China, and DPP’s candidate, Vice President Lai Ching-te, has described himself as a “pragmatic worker of Taiwan independence”.

During the televised debate, his opponents attacked him repeatedly, saying that his pro-independence remarks would “undermine Taiwan’s security”.

Lai responded: “The sovereignty of Taiwan belongs to the 23 million people in Taiwan. It does not belong to (China).”

He added that he and his running mate, Hsiao Bi-khim, were the only candidates who “can stand together with our democratic allies”.

Communist China has in recent years ramped up military pressures on Taiwan, sending in daily warplanes around the island as well as naval vessels.

It has also run two massive military drills — which coincided with Taiwanese leaders meeting with Washington officials — that simulated a blockade of the island.

In the debate, Lai also accused Hou Yu-ih, the candidate for the Kuomintang (KMT) party — which is regarded as having closer ties with Beijing — of being pro-China.

“I will not go backwards (to the past) like the Kuomintang and be willing to become a vassal of totalitarianism… There are so many uncertainties regarding their policies and this is not the path we want to take,” Lai said.

Hou accused Lai of “smearing” him.

“Communication and exchanges (with China) is what we need to do. Because you didn’t do that, that’s why we see great danger across the Taiwan Strait,” Hou said.

He also repeated his opposition to Taiwan’s independence as well as China’s “one country, two systems” policy — a doctrine that Beijing has touted for the governance of Chinese administration regions Hong Kong and Macau.

Telangana’s power demand remains high, surpasses 220 million units despite winter chill; peaks at 12,165 MW

Hyderabad: The State’s power demand has remained elevated over the last one week even during the winter chill, keeping it above 220 million units. On Friday, the power demand in the State stood at 230.592 MU and the peak demand went up to 12,165 MW.

In the last one week, the power demand in the State has been increasing gradually. The power demand on December 25 stood at 220.326 MU, whereas it was 224.71 MU on December 26. Similarly, it was 227.137 MU on December 27 and 227.466 MU on December 28. Last year during the same period, the power demand was below 215 MU.

According to power officials, power demand has gone up mainly due to uninterrupted power supply being given to all categories of consumers, free 24×7 power being given to the agriculture sector and for lift irrigation schemes. Apart from this, electrical demand has increased due to the use of heating appliances and geysers, the officials said.

“Almost 50 percent of the load that we see in winters is due to geysers in the domestic sector,” an official said.

Already, power consumption has started to go up due to agricultural operations picking up in the State. Since there is shortage of water for irrigation purposes due to less water available in various reservoirs, especially those on the Krishna River, farmers are using borewells to supply water to the crops, resulting in an increase in power demand.

With possibilities of the demand further picking up in March-April, the government has taken a number of steps to ensure that the growing demand was met, the officials said, adding that the power utilities were successfully able to meet the power demand of the season without any network constraints or power outages.

“The government is taking steps to ensure uninterrupted power supply to all the consumers,”they said.

Israel assassinated IRGC advisor out of despair: Iranian minister

Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi has condemned in the strongest terms the Israeli assassination of a senior military advisor of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in Syria, stating that the occupying regime committed the crime out of despair and hopelessness.

Speaking in an interview with the Lebanese Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network on Saturday, Vahidi stated that the targeted killing points to the utter desolation and anguish that the Israeli regime is already experiencing.

Brigadier General Seyyed Razi Mousavi, he said, was on “an official mission [in Syria], and was brutally targeted in broad daylight.”

“Israel has no respect whatsoever for international principles and ethical values.”

The Iranian minister said the assassination of Iranian advisors in Syria “will never weaken the Axis of Resistance; on the country it will contribute to its further growth and empowerment.”

“Israel is caught in a downward spiral and on the path to extinction. It is behaving insanely, and this is accelerating its collapse,” Vahidi pointed out.

The Iranian interior minister noted that the blood of Palestinian martyrs and the slain IRGC commander “will certainly uproot the occupying entity.”

Mousavi was martyred by the Israeli regime on Monday in the Sayyeda Zeinab neighborhood of the Syrian capital of Damascus, while on an advisory mission in Syria.

He was one of the companions of Iran’s top anti-terror commander, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated in a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Iran maintains an advisory mission in Syria at the request of the Arab country with the aim of helping Damascus get rid of the foreign-backed militants who have been fighting the democratically-elected government there since 2011.

Earlier in December, Israel killed two Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) military advisors – identified as Mohammad Ali Ataee Shoorcheh and Panah Taqizadeh – in an attack in Syria.

The IRGC announced in a statement at the time that the two officers were martyred against the backdrop of the relentless savagery of the “fake and child-killing” Israeli regime in Gaza.

Vladimir Putin praised the results of India’s chairmanship of G20 (File)

Moscow:

Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his New Year message to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and highlighted that, despite the difficult international situation in the world, relations between both countries developed dynamically.

Russian President also noted some major developments and India-Russia bilateral cooperation in the outgoing year.

The note read, “The messages addressed to President of the Republic of India Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister of the Republic of India Narendra Modi note that, despite the difficult international situation, the special and privileged strategic partnership between Russia and India continues to develop dynamically: in the outgoing year, trade has been growing at an exceptionally high rate and joint projects in various areas have been successfully implemented.”

He also stressed the cooperation between the two countries to develop multifaceted bilateral ties and coordinate efforts to strengthen security and stability at the regional and global levels.

The document read further, “Vladimir Putin praised the results of India’s chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and the G20 and stressed his conviction that Moscow and New Delhi will continue to develop multifaceted bilateral ties and effectively coordinate efforts to strengthen security and stability at the regional and global levels.”.

In addition, Vladimir Putin extended Christmas and New Year greetings to several former foreign heads of state and government, including Belarus, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Brzail , South Africa, Turkey and many others.

On December 28, Putin met with the External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar who was on his formal visit to Moscow from December 25 to 29 as a part of the ongoing high-level exchanges between the two sides.

During the meeting, Putin emphasised the positive stance of Prime Minister Modi on complex global developments, including the situation in Ukraine.

“We know the stance of Prime Minister Modi and we mentioned that repeatedly on many occasions. Well, his attitude towards some complex developments, including the flashpoints like…in Ukraine,” he noted.

The Russian President mentioned that he has advised Modi on the developments in Ukraine multiple times and indicated that further discussions on the matter would take place.

“Many times, I advised him of how things have been going there and I know that he (PM Modi) is willing to do his utmost so that the issue is resolved by peaceful means. So, we probably will delve into that deeper now, and we will give additional information to you on that time,” Putin added.

The Russian President also expressed gratitude for the progressing relationship between Russia and India amid global turmoil. “We are gratified to note that despite all the turmoil happening worldwide, the relationship with our true friend in Asia, India has been progressing incrementally,” Putin said.

India has often articulated and clarified its stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, maintaining that the crisis must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths on both sides.

Amid the raging military conflict, PM Modi has spoken to Putin as well as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.PM Modi also met Ukraine President Zelenskyy in Japan during the G7 summit in May 2023.

In the meeting, PM Modi assured that he would do whatever was possible to help resolve the conflict.”India and I will do whatever we can to resolve the conflict,” PM Modi said.

New Delhi has sought a diplomatic solution to the conflict, with PM Modi telling Russian President Vladimir Putin in September that “now is not an era of war.” The remark drew praise from world leaders as well as the global media.

Prime Minister Modi advised President Putin to ensure a “cessation of violence,” stressing the need for both sides to return to the talks table.

During a telephonic conversation with Putin, PM Modi underlined that Delhi for now will stick to a path of strategic ambivalence on the Ukraine crisis. This is a pragmatic choice, one that reflects the complexities of a realist world and Delhi’s own positions on territorial integrity and sovereignty.

CM Revanth Reddy assures law to ensure SC, ST reservations in private universities

Officials were directed to submit a report on the permissions accorded to private universities, guidelines, facilities provided by the government, number of students, fees charged, fee reimbursement, teaching staff and non-teaching staff etc in Telangana

CM Revanth Reddy assures law to ensure SC, ST reservations in private universities

Hyderabad: Taking serious objection on private universities failing to extend reservations to SC/ST students and functioning arbitrarily, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy said the State government was prepared to bring a law in the Assembly to ensure reservations were implemented in private universities for such students. Reservation was the constitutional right of SC/ST students. A comprehensive inquiry should be conducted into the guidelines of private universities, he said here on Saturday.

Officials were directed to submit a report on the permissions accorded to private universities, guidelines, facilities provided by the government, number of students, fees charged, fee reimbursement, teaching staff and non-teaching staff etc in the State. The Chief Minister specifically directed officials to incorporate the details in the report on how private universities were imparting education without basic facilities and qualified staff. He further pointed out that permissions were given to private universities in lands registered as house plots in the Dharani portal. A separate report should be submitted on the quality of education being offered to students in such universities, he directed the officials.

“Many people are facing difficulties as permissions were given for setting up universities on disputed lands and those registered under house plots. A comprehensive report should be submitted in this regard,” said Revanth Reddy. He reminded the officials as to how many students had suffered during the last academic year due to a college management’s decision to offer admissions without obtaining university permission.

The Chief Minister also ordered the officials to conduct a thorough inquiry into the funds spent for taking up Mana Ooru-Mana Badi programme utilising Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). A detailed report should be submitted on the utilization of funds for Mana Ooru-Mana Badi programme till date, he instructed the officials.
