Watch: Millions of dead fish wash up in Australia

Hyderabad: The past Friday morning for some residents in Australia will be one to remember. Millions of dead fish have washed up in southeast Australia’s Menindee town, as per reports.

Videos going viral on social media platforms show dead fish floating on the Darling River in the region, marking one of the largest fish death events. Around 500 people live in the town in far-west New South Wales. The Darling-Baaka river is a part of the Murray Darling Basin, Australia’s largest river system, reported BBC.

The Department of Primary Industries said that it is the result of the ongoing heat wave in the country. In an elaborate Facebook post, they wrote, “This event is ongoing as a heatwave across western NSW continues to put further stress on a system that has experienced extreme conditions from wide-scale flooding.”

They recognise the fish species to be Bony Herring and said they can be, “more susceptible to environmental stresses like low oxygen levels, especially during extreme conditions such as increased temperatures currently being experienced in the area.”

Residents of Menindee town complained of a terrible smell from the dead fish and began small-scale cleaning drives. The local community depends on the river for various needs.

Video: Amritpal Singh's Bodyguards Arrested By Police In Punjab's Jalandhar

Amritpal Singh has been on the run since yesterday.

Jalandhar:

Amritpal Singh, the Khalistani leader, has managed to evade arrest nearly 24 hours after Punjab police launched a massive statewide operation. But the police have managed to arrest 78 members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’. A new video has emerged which shows the police closing in on three of his aides in Jalandhar.

They are seen resisting the cops, and two of them can be seen running away after ditching the cops. But within seconds, the police again catch hold of them and brings them back to the van.

Sources in the police said that the three seen in the video are Amritpal Singh’s bodyguards. Cops also believe that the separatist leader may have visited the same spot in the last 24 hours.

Amritpal Singh, who the government describes as a Khalistani-Pakistan agent, was last seen speeding away on a motorcycle last evening in Jalandhar.

The separatist leader has been active in Punjab for the past few years and is often seen escorted by armed supporters. He claims to be a follower of the Khalistani separatist and terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and is known as “Bhindranwale 2.0” among his supporters.

The Centre and Punjab government are working together to catch Amritpal Singh, sources said. The centre sent extra forces to Punjab before the police went out to look for him on Saturday. The plan was to arrest the Khalistani leader after meetings of the G20 ended in the state, which was on Friday.

Authorities have stepped up security at several places and suspended internet and SMS services across the state after his aides shared some videos on social media claiming that policemen were chasing them.

The crackdown comes a month after Amritpal Singh and his supporters broke into a police station with swords and guns for the release of one of his aides. Six police officials were injured in the clash.

The Punjab government faced a massive flak for the law and order situation in the state after the incident.

Hyderabad: 1000-year-old temple found neglected near Chilkur

Hyderabad: A 1000-year-old temple built of stone in Rashtrakuta style architecture has been found in a state of neglect near the famous Chilkur Balaji temple in Moinabad mandal of Rangareddy district.

Archaeologist and CEO of Pleach India Foundation E Sivanagi Reddy during his explorations conducted in and around Chilkur village, as part of the awareness programme ‘ Preserve Heritage for Posterity ‘ launched by Pleach India Foundation, noticed many sculptures scattered at the entrance of the village and a dilapidated structure inside the tank bund datable to the period between 9th and 10th centuries CE.

According to Sivanagi Reddy, at the entrance of the Chilkur village, there was a two pillared mandapam built along the tank bund which was in deteriorating condition. There were beautiful sculptures of a seated lady devotee with folded hands and Bhairava in standing posture representing the Kalyani Chalukyan style of art (11th century CE), Nagadevathas, and two stones near the Pochamma temple, and an attractive sculpture of Surya broken into two pieces lying at the rear side of the Siva temple located inside the village, he said.

He said the small single storey Siva temple raised on an Adhisthana ( basement) had sunken into the ground, and was in alarming situation with crevices on the walls. The Sikhara ( Vimana ) portion on the roof had collapsed and the frontage covered with an altogether modern structure that had not only camouflaged the temple but also spoiled its antiquarian look resulting in putting the monument of archaeological significance in oblivion, he informed.

Pitch has been under the covers for a long time, we got to bat well and see where we are. Every game you play for India is a pressure game, so you got to stay calm and make the right decision. We have tried to remain calm in the last few ODI series we have played. Two changes. Ishan misses out, I am back for him, Shardul misses out and Axar is in. If we win the toss, I thought we could do something with three spinners if we bowl first.

  • 13:07 (IST)

IND vs AUS, Live: Here’s what Steve Smith said at the toss

We will have a bowl. Different surface, been under covers for a while, might do something. Just a partnership through the middle would have helped us. It’s a good learning for us playing on these surfaces. Ellis comes in for Maxwell who has pulled up a bit sore and Carey is back for Inglis.
