Accept Homosexuality, If You Want To "Attract A Curse": Burundi President

Accept Homosexuality, If You Want To 'Attract A Curse': Burundi President

Burundi’s President described homosexuality as something imported from the West.

Bujumbura:

Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye has called on citizens to stone gay people, escalating a crackdown on sexual minorities in a country where LGBT people already face social ostracism and jail terms of up to two years if convicted of same-sex offences.

“If you want to attract a curse to the country, accept homosexuality,” Ndayishimiye said in a question and answer session with journalists and the public held in Burundi’s east on Friday.

“I even think that these people, if we find them in Burundi, it is better to lead them to a stadium and stone them. And that cannot be a sin,” he said, describing homosexuality as imported from the West.

His comments were the latest show of widening intolerance of LGBT people in the region.

Uganda passed a law in May that carries the death sentence for certain categories of same-sex offences and lengthy jail sentences for others – a move that was widely condemned by Western governments and human rights activists.

The United States has imposed a range of sanctions including travel restrictions and removing Uganda from a tariff-free trade deal. The World Bank also suspended all future loans to the east African country in protest.

Some lawmakers in Kenya, South Sudan and Tanzania are pushing for similarly tough anti-gay laws in their countries.

The politicians in these countries see their efforts as buttressing African values and sovereignty against what they view as Western pressure on the issue.

2 Corporators Thrashed, Clothes Torn During Meerut Municipal Meet

2 Corporators Thrashed, Clothes Torn During Meerut Municipal Meet

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has attacked the BJP over its “arrogance of power”.

Meerut:

At least two members of the opposition were allegedly thrashed – and one of them had part of their clothing torn off – by BJP members after an argument at a meeting of the Meerut Municipal Corporation on Saturday. The assault allegedly began after one of the BJP men, a Member of the Legislative Council, was pushed by a member of the opposition parties.

This is the second such clash in less than a week and while the previous incident in Shamli saw punches and kicks flying within the confines of a room, the one on Saturday had the politicians coming out on the road and continuing the assault, ignoring police personnel who were trying to intervene.

The opposition has alleged that two of their corporators, both of whom are Dalit, were assaulted by members of the BJP, including the MLC and an Uttar Pradesh minister. The two corporators were from the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav has claimed that the arrogance of power was behind BJP members beating up opposition members and that the ruling party is getting violent because it can sense a loss in the upcoming elections. A police complaint has also been filed against members of the BJP, including UP Minister of State for Energy Somendra Tomar and MLC Dharmendra Bhardwaj.

Mr Tomar and Mr Bhardwaj have rubbished the allegations and claimed that the opposition members used indecent language against a woman corporator, leading to the altercation.

Flare-Up

A board meeting of the corporation was being held to discuss the budget and other issues in the presence of most of the corporators and Mayor Harikant Ahluwalia. Minister Tomar and MLC Bhardwaj also attended the meeting.

Sources said BJP corporator Rekha Singh, while discussing the collection of house tax, made some comments about a particular community and some Muslim and Dalit corporators from the opposition objected. This led to a shouting match and Mr Bhardwaj stepped in to intervene, when he was allegedly pushed by a member of an opposition party.

The BJP, however, has claimed that the cause of the altercation was the use of indecent language against women corporators by some opposition members.

After Mr Bhardwaj was pushed, corporators from the BJP and their supporters got angry and attacked their opposition colleagues, resorting to punching and kicking them. Two opposition corporators who bore the brunt of the attack were Kuldeep alias Kirti Ghopla of the SP, and BSP corporator Ashish Kumar.

The police intervened and tried to control the situation but the thrashing continued. When some policemen finally extracted the two opposition members and took them out on the road, some BJP corporators and supporters followed and continued to assault them outside. Videos also show MLC Bhardwaj slapping corporator Kirti Ghopla.

Mr Ghopla’s vest was shredded by the end of the assault, after which the police managed to take him and Mr Kumar to the Delhi Gate police station nearby.

The opposition corporators have filed a police complaint alleging that they were assaulted and disrespectful speech regarding their caste was used. The MLC and Minister Tomar are named in the complaint. SP MLA Atul Pradhan also reached the police station later.

‘Will Get Their Answer’

In a post in Hindi, Akhilesh Yadav said the BJP will pay electorally for the objectionable treatment meted out to Dalits.

“During the Municipal Corporation Board meeting in Meerut, a minister of the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh and an MLC carried out a dangerous attack on Dalit corporators from the opposition in the presence of the police. The BJP is going to get its answer in the upcoming elections for the humiliating treatment that Dalits are being subjected to because of its arrogance of being in power. The BJP has turned violent out of frustration over its impending defeat,” Mr Yadav said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Denying the allegations, Minister Tomar said, “The opposition seems to have forgotten that this is (Chief Minister) Yogi Adityanath’s government. The mayor is trying to take everyone along. What happened today is saddening, and strict action will be taken as per the rules.”

When he was asked why security arrangements were not made despite such incidents occurring in the past, Mr Tomar said, “An example will be set… action will be taken as per the rules.”

MLC Bhardwaj said, “I was invited by the mayor. When I entered the meeting room, I saw opposition corporators in an altercation with people from my party. Indecent language was used against two women corporators and, when I stepped in to stop that, they tried to push me. This led to an altercation.”

“Opposition corporators from the SP, AIMIM and other opposition parties were egging them on. Under the Yogi Adityanath and Narendra Modi governments, an insult to women will not be tolerated,” he said.

Mayor Ahluwalia also alleged that women corporators were disrespected and said that appropriate action will be taken.

Shamli Clash

Earlier this week, a meeting of the municipal council in Shamli had devolved into a WWE-style clash, with members punching and kicking each other and using tables to defend themselves. One member had even attempted to jump on and another after climbing onto a chair.

Municipal Chairman Arvind Sangal and MLA Prasann Chaudhary were present at the meeting.

Healthcare workers, journalists hold vigil in London for colleagues killed in Gaza

Dozens of health workers and journalists have attended a vigil in the British capital, London, to pay tribute to colleagues killed by Israel’s ongoing war in the Gaza Strip and call for an immediate ceasefire.

The vigil was held in front of 10 Downing Street on Friday, as participants gathered around banners bearing the names of health workers and journalists killed or missing in Gaza.

Prominent figures like Omar Adel-Mannan, a pediatric neurologist, and Lemis Andoni, a seasoned Palestinian journalist, were among the vigil attendees.

Mannan, who had previously worked in Gaza, urged the “silent majority” to “break their silence and take action in response to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.”

“This is a basic humanitarian crisis. This is a genocide. This is a holocaust of 2023 because that is the reality,” he said, underlining the severity of Israeli atrocities in Gaza.

Mannan further noted that it’s time to “stand up, have some courage, and some humanity,” urging the silent majority to overcome hesitations and actively contribute to efforts to address the ongoing crisis.

Andoni held the British government, particularly Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, accountable for the ongoing violence, saying London is “guilty of these murders” as much as Tel Aviv.

He also criticized Western media for the distortion of facts, calling for a commitment to justice, while emphasizing that “There is no commitment to journalism without commitment to justice.”

The participants further underscored the urgent need for a ceasefire and a lasting resolution to the devastating conflict.

The latest development comes as the Government Media Office in Gaza has said a total of 106 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war in early October.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said last week that the first 10 weeks of the Israel-Gaza war were the deadliest recorded for journalists, with the most journalists killed in a single year in one location.

More than 300 health workers have also been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war, and Gaza’s healthcare system has been destroyed by the occupying regime’s offensive.

Israeli regime waged the brutal war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas carried out a historic operation against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime’s decades-long violence against Palestinians.

Since the start of the aggression, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 21,500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured 55,600 others.

The Tel Aviv regime has imposed a “complete siege” on the territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

From the Israel-Hamas war to Russia’s grinding battles against Ukraine, 2023 has shown the dangers of armed conflicts breaking out into region-wide combat

Rewind: Takeaways 2023

Extreme weather scaled new heights while wicked ocean storms, wildfires, floods and droughts ravaged the planet. Fakery rose along with AI, Twitter died, and X and Threads arrived. While the Russia-Ukraine war continues, another deadly battle between Israel-Hamas is piling on more suffering. Here’s what marked the year 2023:

GRINDING BATTLES

From the Israel-Hamas war to Russia’s grinding battles against Ukraine, 2023 has shown the dangers of armed conflicts breaking out into region-wide combat. But behind their long shadows, the world faces strife in countries stretching both the globe and the alphabet from Afghanistan all the way to Yemen.

“Conflicts have become more complex, deadly and harder to resolve. … Concerns about the possibility of nuclear war have re-emerged. New potential domains of conflict and weapons of war are creating new ways in which humanity can annihilate itself,” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in July. A look at where some of the world’s major wars stand.

Israel-Hamas War

The bloodiest war between Israel and Hamas began on Oct 7, when militants broke through the walls surrounding the seaside enclave of the Gaza Strip. Its fighters killed some 1,200 people in Israel and took more than 200 others hostages. The attack, described as the worst one-day mass killing of Jews since the Holocaust, stunned an Israel that had believed its border wall, technologically advanced military and intelligence services broadly protected them from all but harassing militant rocket fire. Embattled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a massive campaign of retaliatory airstrikes.

Russia, Ukraine remain locked

Ukraine received tanks, weapons and Western training before launching a renewed counteroffensive believed to be aimed at reaching the Sea of Azov and splitting the Russian lines in the country’s south. But Ukrainian forces faced dug-in Russian troops, multiple defence lines, minefields and other hazards, making gains either slowly or not at all. Russia faced difficulties as well, including a march on Moscow by the leader of the private military firm Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, that represented the greatest challenge yet to President Vladimir Putin’s years long rule. Prigozhin backed off the march, only to die weeks later in a mysterious plane crash.

African unrest

Sudan, a big East African nation that had been teetering since the overthrow of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir, collapsed into civil war in April. The war pits the country’s military against a powerful paramilitary force known as the Rapid Support Forces, long linked to atrocities in Darfur. The fighting has killed some 9,000 people so far.

Military coups roiling Africa continued. In Niger, a former French colony that’s a key uranium exporter, soldiers toppled the country’s democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum in July. A month later, troops staged a coup in Gabon overthrowing its long-term ruling President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

India becomes world’s most populous nation, surpassing China

Pop

India surpassed China to become the world’s most populous nation. The country recorded 142.86 crore people as compared with China’s 142.57 crore. According to a United Nations Population Fund report, 25% of India’s population is in the age group of 0-14 years, 18% in the 10 to 19 age group, 26% in the age bracket of 10 to 24 years, 68% in 15 to 64 years and 7% above 65 years.

Twitter becomes X Corp, Thread is born

X

Elon Musk revealed the X logo, quickly replacing Twitter’s name and its whimsical blue bird icon. While X contends with an identity crisis, some users began looking for a replacement. Mastodon was one contender, along with Bluesky, which actually grew out of Twitter — a pet project of former CEO Jack Dorsey. To lure disgruntled Twitter users, Facebook parent Meta launched its own rival, Threads.

Hottest year on record

Earth experienced the hottest 12 months ever recorded, according to a report by Climate Central, a nonprofit science research group. The peer-reviewed report says burning gasoline, coal, natural gas and other fossil fuels caused the unnatural warming from November 2022 to October 2023. Over the course of the year, 7.3 billion people, or 90% of humanity, endured at least 10 days of high temperatures that were made at least three times more likely because of climate change.

The year we played with AI…

Artificial intelligence went mainstream in 2023 — it was a long time coming yet has a long way to go for the technology to match people’s science fiction fantasies of human-like machines. Catalysing a year of AI fanfare was ChatGPT. The chatbot gave the world a glimpse of recent advances in computer science even if not everyone figured out quite how it works or what to do with it.

…and tried to regulate it

In October, President Joe Biden signed an executive order on AI that seeks to balance the needs of cutting-edge technology companies with national security and consumer rights. EU lawmakers reached a deal on the world’s first comprehensive AI rules while  Chinese AI regulations focus on generative AI and protections against deepfakes.

 Crypto chaos continued

If 2022 was the year that the cryptocurrency industry collapsed, 2023 was the year of the spillover from that fall. Headlines were dominated by convictions and legal cases. Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and former CEO of the crypto exchange FTX, was convicted of wire fraud and six other charges. Founder of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, agreed to plead guilty to money laundering charges as part of a settlement between US authorities and the exchange. Coinbase, Gemini and Genesis too got entangled with legal trouble.

Chandrayaan-3 on Moon’s South Pole

Chand

The Indian Space Research Organisation’s third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, successfully landed on the South Pole of the Moon. With this, India became the fourth nation in the world to soft land on the moon and the first to touchdown on the South Pole, an uncharted territory that scientists believe could hold vital reserves of frozen water and precious elements.

Rat-hole miners to the rescue

The rescue mission was expected to last only a few days. Instead, it took 17 days to reach 41 construction workers who were trapped when a landslide collapsed a part of the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand. The trapped workers were finally rescued when rat-hole miners, in coordination with the Army, manually dug through 55 metres of debris horizontally, and pulled out all the workers one by one.

So near, yet so far

India won all 10 of its matches before the final and was seeking a third trophy in its fourth appearance in a title match that brought a country of 1.4 billion people to a virtual standstill. But they were outplayed by battle-ready Australia, and restricted to 240 on a slow pitch after losing the toss with only Virat Kohli (54) and KL Rahul (66) making half-centuries. “We were not good enough today,” skipper Rohit Sharma said. “We tried everything, but it didn’t work.”

Israel strikes outskirts of Syria’s Aleppo; material damage reported

Israeli warplanes have conducted another strike on the Syrian territory as the regime keeps up its genocidal campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip.

“At around 17:20 p.m. local time (1420 GMT) on Saturday, the Israeli enemy launched an aerial attack from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, west of Lattakia, targeting some sites south of Aleppo city,” the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) quoted an unnamed military source as saying.

The source said there were no injuries, but some material loss.

Only two days ago Syrian air defenses intercepted most of Israeli missiles launched toward the capital Damascus.

On October 7, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched its surprise Operation al-Aqsa Storm in the occupied territories in response to years of aggression by the Israeli regime against the Palestinians. Caught off-guard, Israel ignited its bloody war machine afterward.

Now almost three months into the conflict, Israel has killed more than 21,600 people in Gaza. Most of the fatalities are women and children.

Israel frequently targets military positions inside Syria, especially those of the resistance movement Hezbollah, which has played a key role in helping the Syrian army in the fight against foreign-backed terrorists.

The regime rarely comments on its attacks on the Syrian territories, which many see as a knee-jerk reaction to the Syrian government’s success in confronting and decimating terrorism.

Israel has been a prime supporter of terrorist groups that oppose the democratically-elected government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Congress trying to cover up its failures: Jagadish Reddy

Approach of five Ministers towards Engineer-in-Chief (Irrigation) C Muralidhar at Medigadda was unbecoming on their part, said Jagadish Reddy

Updated On – 10:54 PM, Sat – 30 December 23

Congress trying to cover up its failures: Jagadish Reddy

MLA and former Minister G Jagadish Reddy addressing a press
conference in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Hyderabad: Taking a strong exception to the way senior officials were being targeted by the new government, MLA and former Minister G Jagadish Reddy said on Saturday that the approach of five Ministers towards Engineer-in-Chief (Irrigation) C Muralidhar at Medigadda was unbecoming on their part.

Addressing a news conference here, he said the people were watchful of the tendencies of the elected representatives in the new government, especially towards officials at the helm in various departments. Even the Chief of Transco and Genco D Prabhakar Rao meted out the same treatment.

His issue should not have been taken up for discussion in the State Legislative Assembly as the officer would not be able to defend himself in the house. Coming down heavily on some of the Ministers for their bid to deal with such situations in highhanded manner, he said such attitudes would not be justified by the people for long.

The Ministers have deliberately been harping on the same old issues such as debt and drained exchequer at every forum. This could be part of their move to cover up the failure of the Congress government to implement the guarantees it had given to the people. They realised that the Congress lacked the basic ability to fulfill what it had promised.

People had started talking that power cuts were back as the Congress was back in the State. There is not a State in the country that could manage without borrowing. So is the case with power utilities all over the country. No power utility could make any profit in its true sense in the country. The power utilities that were in Congress-ruled States were no exception.

The former Minister said the BRS government had given power fulfilling the demand of the consumer in all sectors. Neither the farmers not the industries were let down by the government. The white papers on the power sector in the State and the State finances were released despite the fact that the BRS government had put before them all the facts and figures year after year.

He said Telangana was not the only State which had thermal units running on sub critical technology. As many as 39 such projects were in operations in 16 states. More such units were in the offing. Giving just three to four hour power supply, the Congress Government had borrowed exclusively for power sector to the tune of Rs.22,000 crore by the time of State bifurcation, he recalled.
