Vijay Hazare Trophy: Hyderabad suffer narrow loss against Maharashtra

Tanmay’s ton, Kak’s five-wicket haul go in vain in Hyderabad’s third loss

Hyderabad: Hyderabad went down to Maharashtra narrowly by three wickets to suffer their third successive loss in the Group B Vijay Hazare Trophy match at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground in Jaipur, on Friday.

Asked to bat first, Hyderabad rode on Tanmay Agarwal’s 117-ball 103 (9×4, 1×6) and half-centuries from skipper Rahul Singh, Rahul Buddhi and Ravi Teja to post massive 315/5 in stipulated 50 overs. In reply, Maharashtra reached the target with just two balls to spare. Kartikeya Kak returned with an impressive bowling figures of 5/60 but Ankit Bawne’s ton (113) helped Maharashtra chase down the target.

Earlier, Hyderabad lost Rohit Rayudu (0) in the second over before Tanmay and captain Rahul resurrected the innings with a 156-run second wicket stand. After Rahul’s dismissal, Hyderabad lost two more wickets in quick succession. Nitesh Reddy (6) and A Avanish (1) failed to get going as Hyderabad looked like squandering a good start.

However, Tanmay reached his century but was run out in the 40th over. Rahul Buddhi and Ravi Teja then provided the late flourish adding an unbeaten 89 runs in just 58 balls. While Rahul Buddhi (58) hit five boundaries and two sixes in his 53-ball essay, Ravi Teja, who hit 51 off 33, smashed four boundaries and three maximums.

Later, Kak provided a good start removing OM Bhosale (8) in the sixth over and Siddharth Mhatre (14) in the 10th over. Rakshann castled the stumps of Kaushal Tambe in the 16th over to reduce them to 85/3. However, Ankit Bawne hit a timely century (113 off 108) and added 166 runs for the fourth wicket with Azim Kazi (80 off 81) to put his side on course. Though he was dismissed in the 45th over, experienced Kedar Jadhav hit a 17-ball 32 to take his side past the finish line.

Brief Scores: Hyderabad 315/5 in 50 overs (Tanmay Agarwal 103, Rahul Singh 69, Rahul Buddhi 58 no, Ravi Teja 51 no) lost to Maharashtra 316/7 in 49.4 overs (Ankit Bawne 113, Azim Kazi 80; Kartikeya Kak 5/60).

Over 14,000 Dead In Gaza: How Israel Is Using AI To Conduct Air Strikes

The IDF claimed that till November 2, over 12,000 targets have been hit in 27 days of fighting

The fighting in Gaza resumed after a week after the truce between Israel and Hamas ended and casualties were reported in the first few minutes after the fighting resumed. Israel vowed to uproot Hamas after the deadly October 7 attack in which 1,400 were killed. Over 14,000 have died in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

Israel’s all-out ground and air assault in Gaza has brought the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) back into focus. In 2021, Israel launched ‘Operation Guardians of the Wall’ in its offensive against Palestinians in Gaza. The 11-day fighting is also known as the ‘First AI war’. The data gathered from AI tools were used to strike targets in Gaza.

“Gospel”, “Alchemist”, “The Depth of Wisdom”

In the ongoing war, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) is employing Artificial Intelligence for the selection of targets and conducting precision air strikes in Gaza. Systems like “Gospel”, “Alchemist” and “Depth of Wisdom”, that were used before are back.

Systems such as “Gospel” are being used to allow automatic tools to produce targets at a fast pace, and works by improving accurate and high-quality intelligence material according to the requirement.”

“With the help of artificial intelligence, and through the rapid and automatic extraction of updated intelligence – it produces a recommendation for the researcher, with the goal being that there will be a complete match between the machine’s recommendation and the identification performed by a person,” the IDF added.

In the 2021 conflict, data from Human Intelligence (HUMINT), Visual Intelligence (VISINT) and Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) are collected and fed into systems to help create data to conduct precision strikes. The data from satellites, ground intelligence and surveillance are all crunched into these systems.

“Mass Assasination Factory”

The IDF, in its article dated November 2, claimed that over 12,000 targets have been hit in 27 days of fighting, i.e., almost 444 targets a day. The increase in targets is due to data generated by AI.

“Gospel” can generate targets at an automatic rate and exceeds what was previously possible,+972 Mag and Local Call reported, adding, that this AI system, as described by a former intelligence officer, essentially facilitates a “mass assassination factory”. The recommendations are used to incorporate AI-based platforms like drones.

The AI platforms crunch data to select targets for air strikes. Ensuing raids can then be rapidly assembled with another artificial intelligence model called Fire Factory, Bloomberg reported. Fire Factory calculates munition loads, prioritizes and assigns thousands of targets to aircraft and drones, and proposes a schedule, the report added.

The data processed by an AI tool like Gospel was used by the IDF to select targets to be hit in Hamas, this includes Hamas operatives that have to be assassinated. The target division has helped the IDF build a database of what sources said was between 30,000 and 40,000 suspected militants, the Guardian reported.

Aviv Kochavi, who served as the head of the IDF until January, has said the target division is “powered by AI capabilities” and includes hundreds of officers and soldiers.

In the past, Israel Aerospace Industries and Matrix Defense partnered to incorporate AI to develop automated- target detection systems. The Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has incorporated AI into Spice Bombs and other technologies used for surveillance.

International mediators, including Qatar, Egypt and the US, were on Friday pushing for another extension of the Gaza truce ahead of its expiration at 7am local time (05:00 GMT), Al Jazeera reported.

With no extension announced by the deadline, there were reports of gunfire and explosions in the north of the Gaza Strip, while the Zionist regime’s military said it had intercepted a rocket from Gaza.

An AFP journalist reported Israeli airstrikes, artillery fire seen in Gaza City the Zionist regime media said.

Photos on social media claim to show a recent strike,

Meanwhile, Lebanese Al-Mayadeen network reported fighting between the Palestinian resistance fighters and the Zionist regime military in the northwest of Gaza.

Fierce clashes were going on between the Resistance fighters and the occupying Israeli forces in the northwest of Gaza, Al-Mayadeen said.

According to the report, Resistance fighters confronted the tanks of the Zionist regime in that area.

The temporary ceasefire between Hamas and the Zionist regime ended today as deadline passed.

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas, launched an operation against the Zionist Israeli regime on October 7 in response to more than seven decades of occupation of Palestine and nearly two decades of blockade of Gaza and imprisonment and torture of thousands of Palestinians. It killed more than 1,200 Zionists soldiers and settlers and took more than 220 of them to the enclave as prisoners.

In retaliation to Hamas’s operation, which was called the al-Aqsa Storm operation, the Zionist regime launched heavy attacks against Gaza and put the enclave under total siege.

More than 15,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Zionist regime’s attacks, while tens of thousands of others have been injured.

Israeli regime knows not boundaries in savage attacks

Rich Nations Should Reduce Their Carbon Footprint "Well Before" 2050: PM Modi

Rich Nations Should Reduce Their Carbon Footprint 'Well Before' 2050: PM Modi

COP28 aims to establish the groundwork for a fresh post-2025 global climate finance goal

New Delhi:

Rich nations should completely reduce their carbon footprint “well before” 2050, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday while calling on the world to deliver a concrete outcome on finance to help developing and poor nations combat climate change.

Addressing a session on ‘Transforming Climate Finance’ at COP28 here, PM Modi said India expects concrete and real progress on the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), a fresh post-2025 global climate finance goal.

“Developed countries should completely reduce their carbon footprint well before 2050,” he said.

Rich nations pledged in 2009 to raise $100 billion annually by 2020 to assist developing countries in combating and adjusting to climate change. Despite extensions to 2025, these nations have not met this commitment.

COP28 aims to establish the groundwork for a fresh post-2025 global climate finance goal, succeeding the $100 billion target. Countries aim to finalize this new goal by COP29 in 2024.

PM Modi said that there should be no shortfall of money in the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund and that these be immediately replenished.

The Green Climate Fund, which was proposed at the 2009 climate talks in Copenhagen and began raising money in 2014, hasn’t come close to its goal of $100 billion annually.

The Adaptation Fund is a UN-backed fund that provides grants and loans to help developing countries adjust to climate impacts.

Released ahead of the Dubai climate talks, the United Nations’ “Adaptation Gap Report 2023 said despite the clear signs of accelerating climate risks and impacts worldwide, the adaptation finance gap is widening and now stands at between $194 billion and $366 billion per year.

PM Modi also said that multilateral development banks should provide affordable finance not just for development but also for climate action.

The prime minister said India and other countries in the Global South have contributed little to the climate crisis but are impacted the most.

“Despite the lack of resources, these nations are committed to climate action,” he said.

“Climate finance and technology are important to fulfil the aspirations of the Global South,” the prime minister said, adding that the countries of the Global South expect all possible help from the developed countries to address the climate crisis.
