India Women's Team: Saika Called For T20Is, Shubha For Tests

Left-arm spinner Saika Ishque, who impressed one and all during inaugural edition of Women’s Premier League, received her maiden call-up for India as she was named in the three-match WT20I series against England starting December 6 in Mumbai. The T20 squad comprised mostly of those who were part of the Asian Games gold-winning squad in Hangzhou, which is a nice blend of seniors and juniors. At one end there are seasoned campaigners like skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma and Puja Vastrakar, on the other, the selectors have also included rookies like spinner Mannat Kashyap, batters Kanika Ahuja, Shreyanka Patil, talented pacer Titas Sadhu to name a few.

The Test team doesn’t have too many surprises as Sadhu, an heir apparent to Jhulan Goswami, has been included along with Karnataka left-hander Shubha Satheesh, who was rewarded for her gritty batting in National One Dayers.

India’s squad for 3 T20Is against England: Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Richa Ghosh (wk), Amanjot Kaur, Shreyanka Patil, Mannat Kashyap, Saika Ishaque, Renuka Singh Thakur, Titas Sadhu, Pooja Vastrakar, Kanika Ahuja, Minnu Mani.

US Leader Who Used Donor Money For "Botox, OnlyFans" Ousted From Congress

US Leader Who Used Donor Money For 'Botox, OnlyFans' Ousted From Congress

George Santos has denied his criminal charges. (File)

Washington:

US lawmakers voted Friday to expel George Santos, the scandal-plagued politician who lied his way into Congress and has been indicted on charges of bankrolling his lavish lifestyle with stolen donor cash.

One of the most colorful but controversial figures in the 234-year history of the House of Representatives, the New York Republican is only the third person to join Washington’s rogues gallery of ejected lawmakers since the Civil War.

He swept into the House in 2022, helping the Republicans grab a tiny majority, but it quickly emerged that almost his entire backstory was a fabrication, from his education and religion to his personal history and professional experience.

Santos, 35, has been indicted on dozens of federal charges of stealing from campaign donors, credit card fraud, money laundering and identity theft.

But he was ultimately doomed by a congressional ethics investigation that found “overwhelming evidence” of misconduct and accused him of seeking to “fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy.”

“You sir, are a crook,” said Ohio’s Max Miller, one of several members of Santos’s own party to stand up on the House floor to denounce him in a debate on the expulsion on Thursday.

“My future former colleague is divorced from reality. He has manufactured his entire life,” said Marc Molinaro, a fellow New York Republican, while another member from the state’s delegation Anthony D’Esposito called Santos a “liar.”

Santos, who has denied his criminal charges, allegedly used donor money for Botox treatments and the OnlyFans porn website, as well as luxury Italian goods and vacations to the Hamptons and Las Vegas, according to the committee.

A two-thirds majority of the House was needed to expel him, and while two previous attempts failed, the ethics report was enough to sway many of his defenders, and he was ousted in an overwhelming vote supported by more than 100 of his fellow Republicans.

Bizarre fabrications

Aside from the criminal allegations, Santos has become notorious for a series of bizarre fabrications, including claiming to have worked for Goldman Sachs, being Jewish and having been a college volleyball star.

Beyond accusing the ethics committee of a “smear campaign,” he has not publicly addressed the accusations in any detail.

He is the sixth House member to be expelled since Congress began deliberating in 1789 and the first since 2002, when Ohio Democrat James Traficant was ousted over a bribery conviction.

Republicans hold only a four-seat edge in the House and giving away one of those — with Democrats likely to recapture it in a special election — will be a considerable headache for a party that has struggled to pass legislation.

There was considerable doubt ahead of the vote over whether it would get the required “super-majority,” with the Republican leadership declining to whip the rank-and-file either way.

Dozens of Republicans said they were reluctant to condemn a man who first deserves due process, although he is unlikely to have his day in court until next September — close to what would have been the end of his two-year term.

“Since the beginning of Congress, there’s only two ways you get expelled: You get convicted of a crime, or you participated in the Civil War. Neither apply to George Santos,” Florida’s Matt Gaetz said in a floor speech Thursday.

Israel Army Says 5 Gaza Hostage Deaths Confirmed

The Israeli army on Friday confirmed the deaths of five hostages held in Gaza

Jerusalem:

The Israeli army on Friday confirmed the deaths of five hostages held in Gaza, saying their families had been informed, and the body of one of them returned to Israel.

“In recent days, the IDF and Israel police notified the families of the hostages Eliyahu Margalit, Maya Goren, Ronen Engel and Arye Zalmanovitz about their deaths,” army spokesman Daniel Hagari said.

He also said troops had brought back the body of a fifth person that he identified as Ofir Tsarfati.

Hagari said Gaza operatives were still holding “136 hostages, among them 17 women and children”.

In a separate statement, the army said Tsarfati’s body had been “located in recent days” in Gaza by troops and members of the Shin Bet internal security service and brought to Israel for burial.

It said the family was informed about his death on Wednesday.

Tsarfati was kidnapped from a rave party near the Gaza Strip on October 7 when Hamas militants stormed across the border, killing 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping around 240 others in the worst attacks in Israel’s 75-year history.

Israel has hit back with a massive military campaign that Gaza’s Hamas-run government says has killed more than 15,000 people, also mostly civilians.

Eat folate-rich spinach & broccoli to keep bowel cancer at bay

Eat folate-rich spinach & broccoli to keep bowel cancer at bay

London: Eating leafy greens, such as spinach, cabbage and broccoli, rich in folate, may help to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, according to a study.
Folate is a natural form of vitamin B9 and is found in many foods.

Good sources include foods such as spinach, cabbage, broccoli, sunflower seeds, wholegrains, pulses like chickpeas, lentils and beans, and fruit, especially citrus fruits like oranges. Folate is also available as a supplement in the form of folic acid.

The findings by researchers at the Imperial College London suggests that increasing the intake of folate via diet or taking supplements can decrease the risk of colorectal cancer by up to 7 per cent.

“When it comes to bowel cancer, there are a number of things that people can do to reduce their risk, including eating a varied diet — rich in wholegrains, vegetables, fruit, and beans — which supports the findings from this study,” said Dr Konstantinos Tsilidis, Reader in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention at Imperial.

“The potential protective health benefits of vitamin B9 are demonstrated in this large study. The study also found some promising findings about how folate might be influencing cancer risk, including different genes, but these need further exploration,” Tsilidis added. In the largest study of its kind, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers analysed data from over 70,000 individuals to identify genetic variants that may modify how dietary folate (vitamin B9), folic acid supplements, and total folate can influence the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC).

In line with previous studies, they found that people consuming higher levels of dietary folate, the odds of developing CRC (including proximal colon, distal colon, and rectal cancer) were reduced by 7 per cent for every 260 micrograms higher consumption of dietary folate, which corresponds to 65 per cent of the daily recommended amount (400 micrograms).

According to the authors, the findings support the hypothesis that folate may be effective for CRC prevention, even at regular levels of intake that can be achieved through the diet. The study also suggests folate might be influencing cancer risk, including different genes involved in modulating this risk. However they stress the need for more research to pinpoint the genes involved and their influence.

Anthrobots: Human Cell-Derived Tiny Robots Leave Scientists Surprised

Anthrobots: Human Cell-Derived Tiny Robots Leave Scientists Surprised

An anthrobot consists of several hundred cells.

In a breakthrough study, researchers have developed miniature robots using human cells capable of both movement and healing neurons within a laboratory setting. Termed ‘Anthrobots’, these bioengineered entities consist of human tracheal cells and possess the ability to autonomously configure themselves into various forms and dimensions. The scientists anticipate employing these biobots as innovative instruments for the purposes of regeneration, recovery, and the management of diseases.

The study, published in Advanced Science, was conducted by Tufts University and Harvard University’s Wyss Institute researchers.

According to Nature magazine, developmental biologist Michael Levin at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, and his colleagues had previously developed tiny robots using clumps of embryonic frog cells. But the medical applications of these ‘xenobots’ were limited because they weren’t derived from human cells and because they had to be manually carved into the desired shape. The researchers have now developed self-assembling anthrobots and are investigating their therapeutic potential using human tissue grown in the laboratory.

These tiny biological robots, crafted from human cells, have demonstrated an astonishing ability to mend damaged tissue. These self-assembling creations, measuring between the width of a human hair and the tip of a sharpened pencil, hold promise for regenerative medicine, wound healing, and disease treatment. The researchers envision harnessing these patient-derived biobots to revolutionize healthcare.

By combining several cell types and exploring other stimuli, it might also be possible to develop biobots-robots made from biological material-with potential applications in sustainable construction and outer-space exploration.

“Once we understand what cell collectives are willing and able to do, then we can begin to control that not just for stand-alone bots but for regenerative medicine,” says Levin, including to regrow limbs.

Boxing: Amit Panghal, Shiva Thapa Strike Gold At Nationals

Ignored for this year’s World Championships and Asian Games, boxer Amit Panghal stamped his authority in the 51kg weight class as he clinched the national title with a comprehensive win in Shillong on Friday. The 2019 worlds silver medallist defeated Chandigarh’s Anshul Punia 5-0. Panghal had lost his place in the Indian squad for this year’s world championships and Asian Games to 2023 worlds bronze medallist Deepak Bhoria based on Boxing Federation of India’s new selection policy that came into being this year.

The victory in the nationals will boost Panghal’s confidence as the Commonwealth Games gold medallist will now be eyeing a return to the Indian team for the Paris Olympic qualifiers in February.

He will compete with Bhoria for the spot, who was exempted from the nationals owing to his medal-winning performance in the Worlds earlier this year.

Veteran boxer Shiva Thapa, who is a six-time Asian Championships medallist, continued his scintillating run at the National Championships by winning the 63.5kg title.

The Assam boxer defeated world youth championships medallist Vanshaj by an unanimous verdict.

None of the Indian male boxers were able to fetch quotas in the first Olympic qualifiers — the Asian Games. This had compelled the high performance director and coaches to look out for new talent at the nationals.

However, the likes of Sachin Siwach (57kg), Lakshay Chahar (80kg) and 2021 Asian champion Sanjeet (92kg), who were part of the Asian Games squad, won national titles in the Olympic categories apart from Panghal and Thapa.

While Siwach defeated RSPB’s Sachin 5-0, Chahar and Sanjeet too notched up facile 5-0 wins over Harsh Choudhary and Naveen Kmar respectively.

However, it was disappointment for Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sagar Ahlawat who lost the 92kg title bout to Jaipal Singh of Punjab.

Jaipal knocked out Sagar in the third round.

In the 75kg summit clash, SSCB’s Deepak defeated Ishmeet Singh of RSPB 5-0, while Varinder Singh grabbed the 60kg title with a unanimous decision win over Akash.

15 Jharkhand Workers Rescued From Uttarakhand Tunnel Receive Grand Welcome

15 Jharkhand Workers Rescued From Uttarakhand Tunnel Receive Grand Welcome

The workers were taken to Hemant Soren’s residence in a special bus

Ranchi:

A grand welcome with traditional ‘dhol and nagaras’ was accorded to the 15 Jharkhand workers, who were rescued from Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi along with 26 others, on their arrival here on Friday night.

Cutting across party lines, leaders and workers from the BJP, Congress, JMM, CPI, etc, were seen at Birsa Munda airport welcoming the workers and their 12 family members, who were flown to Ranchi from Delhi.

State Labour Minister Satyanand Bhokta who received the workers at the airport said, “A big mission has been accomplished. The government will extend all help to them.” The workers were taken to Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence in a special bus where an interaction with him is scheduled.

“All the 15 workers, their 12 family members and state government officials who were camping in Uttarkashi reached Birsa Munda Airport. They will meet the CM,” state labour secretary Rajesh Kumar Sharma told PTI.

“A dinner has been planned for them at circuit house. They will be staying there tonight. Tomorrow they will be sent to their respective villages. If those from Ranchi and Khunti want to go to their families tonight, we will send them today,” Sharma said.

On their health check-up, the official said AIIMS Rishikesh had already kept them under observation for 24 hours.

BJP MP Deepak Prakash was also at the airport to welcome the workers. “It is a matter of great joy that our family members reached Ranchi. The success of the operation is credited to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and central agencies,” Prakash said.

JMM MP Mahua Maji said, “We are happy that our workers returned safe. The Centre should ensure that workers’ interests are protected in critical projects.” CPI-ML legislator Vinod Singh demanded safety measures for workers.

A three-member team from the state had rushed to the spot soon after the tunnel collapse on Diwali.

On Wednesday, Jharkhand labour secretary Rajesh Kumar Sharma had said as soon as the workers are released from the hospital, the government will fly them from Dehradun to Delhi and then to Ranchi.

The 41 workers, belonging to Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam, were rescued from the collapsed tunnel in Uttarkashi after a gruelling 17-day operation.

In Khirabeda, on the outskirts of Ranchi, family members of Rajendra, Sukhram and Anil, all in their early twenties, are waiting with bated breath for their arrival.

Sukhram’s sister Khushboo told PTI that they will celebrate Diwali when they return. The mood in the nondescript village has turned festive.

Khirabeda village saw a total of 13 people going to Uttarkashi on November 1 in search of greener pastures. Little did they know what fate had in store for them. Luckily, only three of the 13 from Khirabeda were inside the tunnel when the disaster struck.

Besides three from Khirabeda, other workers hail from Giridih, Khunti and West Singhbhum, where people have erupted in joy after the trapped workers were rescued on Tuesday evening.

In Singhbhum, the families of the six rescued workers are eagerly awaiting a reunion.

For all barring one – Bhaktu Murmu, whose 70-year-old father “died of anxiety” a few hours before his son was evacuated along with 40 other workers trapped in the under-construction Silkyara tunnel, it would be a happy union with their families.

Saluting the courage and bravery of workers Chief Minister Hemant Soren has said the reunion would be a real ‘Diwali’ for their families.

Rescue workers pulled out all 41 workers trapped in Uttarakhand’s Silkyara tunnel in a multi-agency rescue operation that hovered between hope and despair for almost 17 days.
