-An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 struck Mindanao, Philippines, on Saturday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said, at a depth of 63 km (39 miles), and tsunamis were expected to hit the Philippines and Japan shortly.

The Philippine Seismology Agency PHIVOLCS said tsunami waves could hit the Philippines by midnight local time (1600 GMT) and could continue for hours.

The Japanese broadcaster NHK said tsunami waves of up to a metre (3 feet) high were expected to reach Japan’s western coast a little later – by 1:30 a.m. on Sunday (1630 GMT on Saturday).

Earlier last month, a magnitude 6.7 offshore earthquake in the southern Philippines killed eight people.

The deaths in the November 17 quake were reported from Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Davao Occidental provinces, while 13 people were injured from the tremor, which sent scores of people into panic and damaged more than 50 houses and other buildings.

Earthquakes are frequent in the Philippines, lying in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, which the U.S. Geological Survey describes as the “most seismically and volcanically active zone in the world”.

Munich Airport Shut, Flights, Trains Hit As Heavy Snow Paralyses Germany

Munich Airport Shut, Flights, Trains Hit As Heavy Snow Paralyses Germany

Germany has been subject to snow and freezing temperatures for several days

Munich:

Heavy snowfall brought chaos to parts of southern Germany on Saturday, with air and rail traffic blocked in the Bavarian state capital of Munich.

After first suspending flights until noon Saturday (1100 GMT), Munich airport later said it would remain closed until 6:00 am (0500 GMT) on Sunday.

In total, 760 flights were affected, a spokesperson told AFP. More than 40 centimetres (16 inches) of snow fell overnight Friday to Saturday, according to weather services.

Authorities asked residents to stay home for their safety.

The winter weather also disrupted train traffic, with rail operator Deutsche Bahn saying “The main Munich station cannot be served”.

Deutsche Bahn said travellers should expect delays and cancellations throughout the region, and most buses, trams and suburban trains were not running in Munich.

Saturday’s planned football championship match between Bayern Munich and Union Berlin has been called off.

Police in Lower Bavaria said they made 350 interventions linked to the weather Friday night, with five people slightly injured in car accidents.

Much of Germany has been subject to snow and freezing temperatures for several days.

According to weather forecasts, the largest quantities of snow are expected Saturday in Allgau in the south of Bavaria, with another 30 to 40 centimetres.

The snowfall is expected to progressively ease in the afternoon.

Nurse On Yemen Death Row: Court Seeks Centre's Reply To Mother's Request

Nurse On Yemen Death Row: Court Seeks Centre's Reply To Mother's Travel Request

Yemen’s top court had earlier dismissed the appeal of Nimisha Priya (File)

New Delhi:

The Delhi High Court on Saturday sought the Centre’s response on a plea by the mother of a Kerala woman, who is on death row in Yemen for killing a Yemini national, seeking facilitation of her travel to that country to negotiate with the victim’s family about paying blood money to save her daughter.

The plea, which was filed during the day, was listed for urgent hearing before Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora who issued notice to the central government on the petition at a special hearing.

The government’s counsel, who sought time to take instructions on the plea, submitted that the authorities are not advising the woman’s mother to visit Yemen as it could be risky.

Yemen’s top court had on November 13 dismissed the appeal of Nimisha Priya, who was working as a nurse in the west Asian country, against her sentence.

Priya has been convicted of murdering Talal Abdo Mahdi, who died in July 2017, after she injected him with sedatives in order to get back her passport from his possession.

It was alleged that Priya administered him sedatives so she could take back her passport while he was unconscious but he died of an overdose.

Priya’s mother moved the high court earlier this year, seeking permission to go to Yemen in spite of a travel ban for Indian nationals and negotiate the “blood money” to save her daughter.

Blood money refers to the compensation paid by offenders or their family to the family of a murder victim.

Advocate Subhash Chandran KR, representing the petitioner, said a letter informing about the Supreme Court of Yemen dismissing Priya’s appeal was received on Friday and her execution can take place anytime.

The lawyer said the petitioner was not asking the government to pay blood money and was only seeking permission to travel to Yemen.

The plea sought the court’s direction to the Union government to facilitate the travel of the petitioner, Priya’s 10-year-old daughter and two other adult family members to Yemen to try and save her after negotiating with the victim’s family about paying blood money.

During the hearing, the counsel for the Centre told the court that Priya’s mother was denied permission to travel to Yemen due to volatile conditions in the middle east. Also, no Indian consular service was available in Yemen currently, the lawyer told the court.

“We advised that please don’t go there because it will not be possible for us to provide any service. There is no single Indian there to help you or to provide security to you. We don’t want people to go there or to be exposed to hostile position. There is no consular officer there or even connection with the current government in Yemen,” he submitted.

On being asked by the court if the woman wishes to travel to Yemen at her own risk, her counsel said in case the government is not able to initiate negotiations, she will have to do it on her own after going there.

The Centre’s counsel also told the court there are no direct flights operating from India to Yemen.

The court then asked the Centre’s counsel to take specific instructions about whether the woman can be permitted to fly to the nearest country in case she wants to travel to Yemen at her own risk.

Justice Arora said the minor child cannot travel to Yemen as she cannot be allowed to be subjected to any risk or hostile environment.

The ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ had approached the high court last year and sought direction to the Centre to “facilitate diplomatic interventions as well as negotiations with the family of the victim on behalf of Nimisha Priya to save her life by paying blood money in accordance with the law of the land in a time-bound manner”.

The petition alleged Mahdi had forged documents to show he and Priya were married and abused and tortured her.

The high court had last month asked the Centre to take a decision within a week on the woman’s request to travel to Yemen.

The high court had earlier refused to direct the Centre to negotiate payment of blood money to save Priya’s life but asked it to pursue legal remedies against her conviction.

Hyderabad: Telangana is not only home for a large number of US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) approved units, but the number of such units in the State is steadily increasing with each year, thanks to the infrastructure available in the State.

In the financial year 2022-23, 258 USFDA units were approved in Telangana, much higher than the 199 units in New Jersey. Since the last few years, Telangana has emerged as the single largest province to house more USFDA approved units outside the United States.

This year, since April till date, 205 units have been approved in Telangana against 179 in New Jersey. “All this is being achieved due to the tailor-made infrastructure developed by the State government,” a senior official from the Industries department said.

Hyderabad, Bengaluru and the Mumbai-Pune cluster were the clinical research clusters in India, and Hyderabad has emerged as the preferred destination, he pointed out.

The vibrant innovation cluster at Genome Valley is home to multinational CROs and CMOs, including Dr.Reddy’s Laboratories, Sai Life Sciences, Syngene, SYNEOS Health (erstwhile INC Research and inVentiv Health), Parexel International, VIMTA and many more. The Telangana government has been focusing on the life sciences sector and plans have been laid to double the size of the life sciences sector in the State from the current $80 billion to $250 billion in size in five years.

There were about four lakh people working in the life sciences and allied sectors and this would also double to 8 lakh in the coming five years in the State, as per the plans, officials said.

Apart from the robust infrastructure, many companies were setting high targets to expand their markets globally with a special focus on US market. Under these grand plans, companies were expanding their unit operations in Telangana, said Pharmexcil Director General Udaya Bhaskar.

In fact, after the Covid pandemic, the USFDA has cut down its inspections of units significantly. As a result, many applications were yet to be cleared, he said, adding in the days to come, more USFDA units would be operational in Telangana and other States in the country.
