AI Named Word Of The Year By Collins Dictionary

AI Named Word Of The Year By Collins Dictionary

The abbreviation of artificial intelligence (AI) has been named the Collins Word of the Year for 2023.

London:

The abbreviation of artificial intelligence (AI) has been named the Collins Word of the Year for 2023, the dictionary publisher said on Tuesday.

Lexicographers at Collins Dictionary said use of the term had “accelerated” and that it had become the dominant conversation of 2023.

“We know that AI has been a big focus this year in the way that it has developed and has quickly become as ubiquitous and embedded in our lives as email, streaming or any other once futuristic, now everyday technology,” Collins managing director Alex Beecroft said.

Collins said its wordsmiths analysed the Collins Corpus, a database that contains more than 20 billion words with written material from websites, newspapers, magazines and books published around the world.

It also draws on spoken material from radio, TV and everyday conversations, while new data is fed into the Corpus every month, to help the Collins dictionary editors identify new words and meanings from the moment they are first used.

“Use of the word as monitored through our Collins Corpus is always interesting and there was no question that this has also been the talking point of 2023,” Beecroft said.

Other words on Collins list include “nepo baby”, which has become a popular phrase to describe the children of celebrities who have succeeded in industries similar to those of their parents.

“Greedflation”, meaning companies making profits during the cost of living crisis, and “Ulez”, the ultra-low emission zone that penalises drivers of the most-polluting cars in London, were also mentioned.

Social media terms such as “deinfluencing” or “de-influencing”, meaning to “warn followers to avoid certain commercial products”, were also on the Collins list.

This summer’s Ashes series between England and Australia had many people talking about a style of cricket dubbed “Bazball”, according to Collins.

The term refers to New Zealand cricketer and coach Brendon McCullum, known as Baz, who advocates a philosophy of relaxed minds, aggressive tactics and positive energy.

The word “permacrisis”, defined as “an extended period of instability and insecurity” was the Collins word of the year in 2022.

In 2020, it was “lockdown”. In 2016, it was “Brexit”.

Dominic Thiem Stuns Stan Wawrinka In Paris Masters For Round Of 32 Spot

Dominic Thiem scripted a fine comeback performance to defeat former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka for a place in the second round of Paris Masters. Thiem saved a match point in the third set at 3-5 before rallying past Wawrinka 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to advance to the second round. The thrilling match between two of the best one-handed backhands in recent memory ended after two hours and 31 minutes of thrilling play. “It’s very nice to share a great and close match like that with Stan because we have a history together of many great matches. Obviously, he’s one of my big idols backhand wise,” Thiem was quoted as saying by ATP. While Thiem hit highlight-reel strokes throughout the match, particularly with jaw-dropping passing shots, Wawrinka was the first to come close to winning. The Swiss had a match point at 5-3, 40/30, but double-faulted long. It was one of six double faults he committed during the game.

Thiem took good advantage of the little opportunity, returning to serve after Wawrinka’s forehand went long. In what became a battle of wills, the Austrian broke again in his next return game and did not waste his chance to win the match.

When Wawrinka’s final forehand return went long, Thiem celebrated by holding his arms up and taking a big breath, a sign of how much the moment meant to him. His first victory on a hard-court ATP Masters 1000 event since the 2019 Rolex Paris Masters.

“The last two years I have lost more close matches than I have won, so this one is very, very important for me. The tennis has been getting better since Vienna. I beat two great guys in the qualies and now Stan in a match after saving match point, so it gives me a huge boost,” Thiem added.

Thiem will next play defending champion Holger Rune. The pair met earlier this year in Monte-Carlo, where the Dane prevailed in straight sets.

"Ceasefire Now!": Protesters Interrupt US Congress Hearing On Israel Aid

'Ceasefire Now!': Protesters Interrupt US Congress Hearing On Israel Aid

Protesters with hands covered in red paint interrupted a congressional hearing on US military aid.

Washington:

Protesters with hands covered in red paint repeatedly interrupted a congressional hearing on US military aid Tuesday, demanding Washington stop funding Israel’s fight against Hamas.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin were appealing to the Senate Appropriations Committee for billions of dollars in military assistance to support Israel, Ukraine and other security costs.

Some two dozen spectators raised hands covered in paint in a symbol of the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip since Israel began its bombardment of the Palestinian territory after Hamas’s attack earlier this month.

Several wore messages of “Free Gaza” written on their arms and held signs demanding “No more $$$ 4 Israel,” while some cried out “Ceasefire now,” “Palestinians are not animals” and “Shame on you all.”

One man wore a shirt reading “Stop backing genocide.”

Blinken was forced to stop speaking several times as some demonstrators were escorted out by police.

President Joe Biden has asked Congress for more than $105 billion in security spending, including $14.3 billion for its staunch ally Israel.

Israeli troops and Hamas militants were engaged in “fierce battles” in Gaza on Tuesday, Israel’s military said, as tanks and armored bulldozers advanced through the ruins of the embattled territory, which the United Nations said is facing “unprecedented” humanitarian needs.

Israel’s response to the Hamas attack has now killed more than 8,500 people, according to the latest count given by the Hamas-run health ministry, many of them children.

The siege comes after the bloodiest attack in Israel’s history, when Hamas gunmen killed some 1,400 people in a brutal cross-border raid, according to Israeli officials.

Chief Justice Helps Resolve Custody Dispute In 2 Weeks

Chief Justice Helps Resolve Custody Dispute In 2 Weeks

The couple agreed that the child would stay with the mother for two years. (File)

New Delhi:

The intervention of the Chief Justice of India has ensured an amicable settlement of a child custody dispute in just a fortnight. Showing his humane side, Justice DY Chandrachud asked the additional solicitor general to speak to the parents and the child and, during the final hearing, also asked the eight-year-old – in Hindi – how he was doing in school.

The parents of the child (all names are being withheld to protect their privacy) got married in 2014 and trouble began in their marriage a year later. According to the woman’s petition, their son was born in July 2015 and, just a couple of months later, she was asked to leave her matrimonial home because her husband had quit her job and their family members said they wouldn’t be able to support her and the infant.

After several ups and downs, the husband sent her a divorce notice in 2021. With the divorce pending, he went to meet the child and took him away earlier this year, promising to return him to his mother in Lucknow on June 26. When he failed to do that and did not answer her calls, the mother went to Dehradun to meet the boy, only to find that her husband and his family had moved to Delhi.

She went to Delhi and, when she could not find the family, filed a petition in the Delhi High Court asking for the child to be produced. When the hearings began, she found out that the boy had been taken to Dehradun again, outside the court’s jurisdiction. She finally moved the Supreme Court and asked for him to be produced.

Agreement Reached

During a hearing of the case on October 17, the bench headed by the Chief Justice heard the mother’s side. Keeping in mind that an eight-year-old’s future was hanging in the balance, Justice Chandrachud asked Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to speak to the parents and the child and see if the matter could be resolved between them.

At the next hearing on Monday, Ms Bhati informed the court that she had called them to her house and spoken to them and they had all agreed that the child would stay with the mother for two years and the parents would take a mutual decision on what comes next after that.

While speaking of the meeting, Ms Bhati said that the child seemed very intelligent and this prompted Justice Chandrachud to turn to him and ask in Hindi how he was doing in school. The child replied that he hadn’t been attending school because it was in Lucknow and he had been travelling with his father.

Expressing satisfaction with the agreement, the bench closed the matter and also granted a divorce to the parents.
