‘Ukraine is losing’, says Russian defense minister

“Despite the supply of new kinds of NATO weapons, the Kiev regime is losing. The Russian forces keep conducting active defense, effectively inflicting damage,” the minister said during a governmental meeting on Wednesday.

Shoigu specifically highlighted the successes of Russian air-defense troops, praising them for delivering over 1,400 successful intercepts of Ukrainian assets last month. The downed targets include 37 planes and six ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles, he claimed. The US provided the latter capability earlier in October, after months of requests by the Ukrainian government.

Shoigu compared the number of downed Ukrainian planes with the number of F-16s that had been promised to Ukraine by Western donors. The pledged fleet would require Russia roughly 20 days to destroy at the rate demonstrated last month, he noted.

Western governments have vowed to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes” to defeat Russia on the battlefield, but their ability to deliver on the promise remains in question. The conflict in the Middle East, which erupted last month and caused a surge in demand for weapons by Israel, has further weakened Kyiv’s ability to secure Western assistance.

Iran's Leader to Muslim nations: Boycott Israeli regime, say no to Gaza genocide

By Press TV Staff Writer

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, addressing a gathering of students ahead of the National Day of Fighting Global Arrogance on Wednesday, hailed the Palestinian resistance for its courageous fight against the West-backed occupying regime.

He called for an immediate end to the weeks-long bombing campaign in the besieged territory, which has claimed the lives of more than 8,500 Palestinians and spawned a terrible humanitarian crisis.

But, as Leader’s remarks implied, the end of the ongoing genocide in Gaza isn’t enough. It’s important for free countries of the world to end the exports of oil and other commodities to the Israeli regime.

The death toll in the Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, four weeks after the no-holds-barred campaign started, continues to mount, with the majority of victims being children, women and the elderly.

The human casualties have been accompanied by the crippling humanitarian blockade, including the cutting of electricity, water and fuel, which has made the functioning of hospitals impossible.

On Tuesday night, hundreds of Palestinians were massacred at the Jabalia refugee camp, a residential neighborhood in northern Gaza, after the Israeli warplanes dropped many bombs there.

The Israeli plan to depopulate Gaza has so far failed as 2.2 million people living in the territory, including the indigenous resistance groups, have firmly stood their ground and resisted.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution, the most powerful and most vocal voice in support of the Palestinian cause, in his Wednesday speech commended the Palestinian people for their resilience.

He said the people in the besieged Gaza Strip “have stirred the human conscience with their patience”, referring to massive pro-Palestine demonstrations in recent weeks across the world.

Ayatollah Khamenei also mocked the claim that Iran was behind these pro-Palestine protests, especially in Western countries, asking whether Basijis in London or Paris organized the rallies.

He reiterated that this war, unlike the media narratives, was not between Israel and Gaza, but between “truth and falsehood” and between “arrogant forces and people of faith.”

“The world of imperialism has come forward with bombs, military pressure, tragedies, and crime, but you should know that the power of faith will overcome all of these,” he asserted.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution urged Muslim governments to “block the export of oil and other commodities to the Zionist regime” as a mark of protest over what’s unfolding in the Gaza Strip.

Repeating what he has said before, Ayatollah Khamenei affirmed that the Muslim world must not forget it was the US, Britain, France and other states that “stood against Islam and oppressed Palestinians.”

In his remarks last week, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution said the US is a “definite accomplice” of the Zionist regime and its hands are drenched in the blood of the oppressed Palestinians.

“Actually, it is the US that is somehow managing the crime that is being committed in Gaza. The US is the one that is managing things,” he stated at the time, underlining the fact that Americans and its Western allies are not merely complicit in the Gaza genocide but key masterminds of it.

On Wednesday, he repeated that the Zionist regime “will be crippled in a matter of days” without the help of the US, referring to the overwhelming dependence of the Tel Aviv regime on Washington.

Ayatollah Khamenei also denounced the Western governments and their media apparatuses for labeling Palestinian freedom fighters as “terrorists”, describing it as one of the signs of their shamelessness.

“The Germans occupied Paris in World War II. Were the French who were fighting the Germans terrorists” he stated, calling out the Western double standards.

Ayatollah Khamenei hastened to add that the Zionist entity has been stunned by “irreparable blow” and that the ultimate victory, which isn’t too far away, belongs to Palestine and Palestinians.

“The Zionist regime is now helpless, confused. It lies to its own people. The fact that they are worried about their prisoners in the hands of the Palestinians is also a lie,” the Leader stressed.

The Hamas-led Palestinian resistance has taken more than 200 Israeli military personnel and soldiers as captives and intends to swap them with thousands of Palestinians languishing in Israeli prisons.

While the Israeli regime has demanded the release of its captives, it has at the same time continued to bomb the densely-populated civilian areas in Gaza where the captives are held.

Earlier this week, a video of three captured Israeli women was released by Hamas, which showed them in utter disillusionment and anger accusing Netanyahu of not caring for their lives.

“We are innocent citizens… You want to kill us all; you are killing us, you want us to die and you want the army to kill us. You killed many Israelis. Let us go now… Let us return to our families now,” one of them was quoted as saying, addressing the Israeli regime’s embattled premier.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution referred to the same, saying the Israeli regime was lying to its people and warned that the bombs dropped on the besieged territory would also kill the Israeli captives.

The speech ended amid vociferous chants against the regimes in Tel Aviv and Washington and a reaffirmation of support and solidarity with the oppressed people of Palestine.

"Hatching Conspiracy…": Mamata Banerjee On Summons To Arvind Kejriwal

'Hatching Conspiracy...': Mamata Banerjee On Summons To Arvind Kejriwal

Trinamool Congress boss and Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee (File).

New Delhi:

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit out at the BJP Wednesday, accusing the ruling party of conspiring to arrest senior opposition leaders, beginning with her Delhi counterpart – the Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal – ahead of state polls next month and the general election next year.

“Before next year’s elections, they (the BJP) are trying to gag the voice of all opposition parties. They are planning to arrest all opposition leaders before polls so they can vote for themselves in an empty country… they are hatching a conspiracy,” Ms Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata.

Mr Kejriwal has been summoned Thursday by the Enforcement Directorate over the liquor policy case in the national capital. The ED, which reports to the Union Finance Ministry, has already arrested Mr Kejriwal’s deputy, Manish Sisodia, and accused the AAP of kickbacks worth Rs 338 crore.

The AAP is braced for Mr Kejriwal’s arrest; senior leader and Delhi Minister Atishi quoted “sources” as saying the Chief Minister “will (be) arrested and put in jail (on November 2)”.

Closer to home too, Ms Banerjee is fighting off attention from the ED; Bengal Minister Jyotipriya Mallick was arrested last week for alleged involvement in a ration distribution scam.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool leader also accused the BJP of hacking opposition leaders’ phones; this claim comes a day after MPs, including Mahua Moitra from Ms Banerjee’s party, said they had received messages from Apple warning of “state-sponsored attackers” trying to access their devices.

Ms Banerjee’s declarations, and message of support, was echoed by AAP MP Raghav Chadha, who claimed 95 per cent of cases by investigative agencies since 2014 have targeted opposition leaders.

“Now, after formation of INDIA, BJP is rattled. We have learnt from sources they have hatched a plan to target top leaders from the alliance. The first arrest will be Chief Minister Kejriwal,” he said.

The AAP leader’s “list” also included Ms Banerjee and her nephew – Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, who is being investigated by the ED and CBI in various cases, including the coal scam.

The AAP and the Trinamool are both part of INDIA – a 28-member bloc formed in July to unite the opposition ahead of elections this year and next.

The BJP has not, so far, reacted to either Ms Banerjee or Mr Chadha’s statements.

The opposition has routinely accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party of using investigative agencies that report to the central government – like the ED and CBI – to target rival leaders, particularly ahead of elections. The government has firmly denied these accusations.

Drones hit base housing US troops, militants in southeastern Syria

A military base in southeastern Syria near the border with Jordan and Iraq, where US occupation troops and their allied Takfiri militants are stationed, has come under attack by armed unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of anti-terror fighters, in a statement claimed responsibility for the Wednesday strike.

It noted that the al-Tanf base, located in Syria’s Homs province, was targeted by two drones, and the designated targets were precisely struck and destroyed.

There were no immediate reports about possible casualties and the extent of damage caused.

Sabereen News, a Telegram news channel associated with Iraqi anti-terror Popular Mobilization Units, also reported the incident.

The strike comes amid rising anti-US sentiment over Washington’s firm support for the Israeli onslaught against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, which has killed at least 8,796 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured more than 23,000 others.

On Tuesday, two rockets struck the US military installation at the Conoco gas field in Syria’s eastern province of Dayr al-Zawr.

Another explosion ripped through the al-Omar oil field in the same Syrian province shortly afterwards, as several rockets hit the vicinity of the US base set up in the energy-rich region.

A total of 21 US service members reported “minor injuries” as a result of drone and rocket attacks on American military bases in Iraq and Syria last week, according to the Pentagon.

“Between October 17 and 18, 21 US personnel received minor injuries due to drone attacks at al-Asad Airbase, Iraq, and al-Tanf Garrison, Syria,” Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said. “All members returned to duty.”

A senior defense official told reporters on Monday that the total number of drone attacks on bases in Iraq and Syria housing US troops has increased to at least 23.

That amounts to at least 14 attacks in Iraq and at least nine attacks in Syria since October 17, according to the official.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday unveiled a grand and gleaming bronze statue of Sachin Tendulkar at the Wankhede Stadium here.

Present on the occasion were Sachin Tendulkar and his entire family, Sports Minister Sanjay Bansode, Nationalist Congress Party President Sharad Pawar, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, BCCI Secretary Jai Shah, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) President Amol Kale, Secreatry Ajinkya Naik and other BCCI and MCA office-bearers.

Commissioned by MCA, the statue depicting the cricket icon in his trademark “lofted drive” pose is the first-ever erected for any legend at the 49-year-old Wankhede Stadium, and is placed prominently at the Sachin Tendulkar Stand.

It has been created by Ahmednagar-based sculptor Pramod Kamble, who said the larger-than-life size statue stands 14 feet tall.

It now adorns the stadium high above, at a strategic location visible from all sides, just ahead of some of the ICC ODI World Cup matches scheduled here this week.

First announced in February and planned around June-July, the statue is billed as the MCA’s tribute to the 50th birthday (April 24) of Tendulkar, being celebrated by his fans and cricket lovers world over this year.

The selected pose, after scouring thousands of action images of Tendulkar, finally zeroed down to the memorable sixer shot in a lofted drive pose, with his left leg extended, body slightly bent, head high and the bat pointing at the sky, and had the personal approval of the cricketing giant.

Tendulkar, a resident of Bandra, not only played some of his best matches and set or broke many records at the Wankhede Stadium, it was also the venue for his swansong Test 10 years ago “in November 2013” before he retired.

Conferred the Bharat Ratna in 2014, Tendulkar is a veteran of 15,921 runs in 200 Tests, besides amassing 18,426 runs in ODIs.

Mahua Moitra to Be Questioned Tomorrow On Reports From 3 Ministries

New Delhi:

Trinamool Congress MP Mohua Moitra will be questioned tomorrow by the Ethics Committee of Lok Sabha in cash for query case. Along with other documents and evidences before the committee, she would also be questioned on the basis of reports received by the committee from three Union ministries, sources have said. The reports from Home, Information Technology and External Affairs ministries are with the committee. The panel had sought information from the three ministries after a meeting held on October 26. Among other things, it had asked whether IP addresses of her log-ins and her locations were the same.

The Ethics Committee hearing has been buttressed by the explosive affidavit of businessman Darshan Hiranandani, who while remaining silent on the cash-for-query issue, has admitted to posting questions on Mahua Moitra’s parliamentary login. If proved, this would comprise Breach of Parliamentary Privilege and enough to get her expelled from the House.

His gifts to Ms Moitra, he wrote in the affidavit, was by way of meeting the demands of the MP, who wanted to politically target Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Adani Group.

Ms Moitra has said she should be allowed to cross-examine the businessman — a demand she reiterated in her letter to the Ethics Committee today.

In the letter, which she posted on X, formerly Twitter, she remarked that a parliamentary ethics committee may not be the “appropriate forum to examine allegations of alleged criminality”, because the committee lacks the power to examine such allegations.

This, she said, was deliberately kept so by “our nation’s founders” to prevent misuse of committees by government that enjoy brute majority in parliament.

The BJP’s Nishikant Dubey, whose allegations the Ethics Committee is examining, had accused Ms Moitra of “serious Breach of Privilege”, “Contempt of the House” and conspiracy — a ‘Criminal Offence’ under Section 120A of IPC”.

Ms Moitra also pointed out that the committee has not made any code of conduct for MPs to follow and asked the committee to ensure there is “no room for political partisanship” in its functioning.

“It is important to note that till date the committee on ethics has not formulated any code of conduct for members and in fact the committee has not even had any sittings in the past two years. I wish to most respectfully point out that in view of the lack of a structured code of conduct, it is all the more important that each case be dealt with in an objective and fair manner…” the Trinamool Congress MP said in the letter to the ethics committee chairperson.

Quoting media reports today, Mr Dubey posted on X that “questions were asked 47 times in the Lok Sabha from Hiranandani’s mail id and MP portal in Dubai”.

“If this news is correct then all MPs of the country should should stand against Mahua ji’s corruption. Hiranandani asked questions in the Lok Sabha on his own behalf. Have we become MPs to serve the selfish interests of the capitalists?” his tweet read.

Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, on whose complaint to the Central Bureau of Investigation the entire case rests, was cross-examined by the Ethics Committee on October 26. The Committee has also heard Mr Dubey and is expected to give its report to the Speaker as soon as possible.

ED charge sheet names Jet Airways founder Goyal, wife in Rs 538 cr ‘Canara Bank fraud case’

Mumbai: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has submitted its charge sheet in the Canara Bank’s Rs 538-crore fraud case naming Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal, his wife Anita Goyal, and four other companies, officials said.

The charge sheet, filed before a Special Court, came two months after Goyal’s arrest on September 1 in the Canara Bank complaint of November 2022 alleging that loans given for the airline were allegedly diverted for personal expenses and clearing his private liabilities.

The matter is likely to come up for further hearing on Wednesday. The bank’s complaint to the CBI in early May 2023 – based on a forensic audit of the company for the period April 2011-June 2019 – led to the ED case on May 10, 2023 under the PMLA as the money-laundering angle emerged in the alleged scam.

After Jet Airways started defaulting on repayments, Canara Bank declared it as a non-performing asset in 2019 and the ED claimed that the loan amount of Rs 538-crore was diverted and siphoned off. Goyal, 74, was arrested by the ED on September 1, and is currently lodged at the Arthur Road Central Jail in judicial custody, even as he has made an application challenging his “illegal” arrest in the case.

The ED has contended that the Goyal allegedly diverted company’s funds, appointing his family members as employees, paying salaries of a company floated by his daughter, paying huge amounts of professional and consultancy fees, dubious expenses, etc to the tune of around Rs 1,000-crore, and unaccounted transactions with payments made to foreign accounts.

Beware! Mobile phone use may adversely affect semen quality

Frequent use of mobile phones, which emit electromagnetic radiation, can lower sperm concentration and total sperm count.

Beware! Mobile phone use may adversely affect semen quality

London: Frequent use of mobile phones, which emit electromagnetic radiation, can lower sperm concentration and total sperm count, finds a study.

However, no association was found between mobile phone use and low sperm motility and morphology, revealed the study published in the journal Fertility & Sterility.

While various environmental and lifestyle factors have been proposed to explain the decline in semen quality observed over the last fifty years, the role of mobile phones has yet to be demonstrated.

To understand, a team from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) in Switzerland led a cross-sectional study based on data from 2,886 Swiss men aged 18 to 22, recruited between 2005 and 2018.

The data revealed an association between frequent use and lower sperm concentration.

The median sperm concentration was significantly higher in the group of men who did not use their phone more than once a week (56.5 million/mL) compared with men who used their phone more than 20 times a day (44.5 million/mL).

This difference corresponds to a 21 per cent decrease in sperm concentration for frequent users (-20 times/day) compared to rare users (<1 time-), the researchers said.

Semen quality is determined by the assessment of parameters such as sperm concentration, total sperm count, sperm motility and sperm morphology.

According to the values established by the World Health Organization (WHO), a man will most probably take more than one year to conceive a child if his sperm concentration is below 15 million per millilitre. In addition, the percentage chance of pregnancy will decrease if the sperm concentration is below 40 million per millilitre.

Many studies have shown that semen quality has decreased over the last fifty years.

Sperm count is reported to have dropped from an average of 99 million sperm per millilitre to 47 million per millilitre. This phenomenon is thought to be the result of a combination of environmental factors (endocrine disruptors, pesticides, radiation) and lifestyle habits (diet, alcohol, stress, smoking).

Data analysis also seems to show that the position of the phone — for example, in a trouser pocket — was not associated with lower semen parameters.

“However, the number of people in this cohort indicating that they did not carry their phone close to their body was too small to draw a really robust conclusion on this specific point,” added Rita Rahban from the varsity.
