New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday made ‘absolute’ its earlier order granting interim anticipatory bail to the Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas BV, in an alleged harassment case filed against him.
A bench of Justices BR Gavai, Aravind Kumar, and Prashant Kumar Mishra made its earlier order ‘absolute’ of granting interim anticipatory bail to Srinivas after being apprised that he had cooperated with the investigation.
On May 17, the top court had granted him interim anticipatory bail.
“By order dated May 17, we had granted ad-interim bail. The Additional Advocate General of the State of Assam vehemently opposes the anticipatory bail application. However, taking into consideration that the petitioner has cooperated with the investigation, we are entitled to allow the application and the earlier order is made absolute,” the bench ordered.
Srinivas has challenged a Gauhati High Court order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea in an alleged harassment case filed against him.
The apex court had granted interim anticipatory bail to Srinivas several times.
Srinivas challenged the Gauhati High Court order rejecting his anticipatory bail plea.
On May 5, the Gauhati High Court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Srinivas in a case lodged by a former colleague and the ex-president of Assam Youth Congress accusing him of causing mental agony to her.
High Court had also refused to quash the FIR.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that Srinivas persistently harassed her mentally by way of sexist remarks and slang words.
On her complaint, an FIR was registered booking Srinivas under Sections 352 (assault or criminal force), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 354A (1)(iv) (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code.
The woman had claimed that Srinivas had heckled her, held her arm, pushed and pulled her and used slang words during the party’s recent plenary session in Raipur. He had also threatened to ruin her career in the party if she complained against him, she alleged.
The alleged offence had occurred in Raipur in Chhattisgarh which was beyond the territorial jurisdiction of the Dispur police station, where the case was filed and Assam police had no jurisdiction to investigate or register an FIR for an offence that allegedly took place in Chhattisgarh, Srinivas said.
The Congress had issued show cause notice to the woman and later expelled her from the primary membership of the party for six years for anti-party activities.

Khammam: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s rule was inspired by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, the late NT Rama Rao, Sathupalli MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah has said.
Addressing the public at the BRS Praja Ashirwada Sabha at Kallur in Sathupalli Assembly constituency on Wednesday, the MLA said he was working for the welfare of people and development of Sathupalli for the past 15 years.
Chandrashekhar Rao had ensured development of Sathupalli by providing Rs.1000 crore to the constituency and people of all sections have to thank the Chief Minister for providing the funds, the MLA said.Telangana has become a model for development in all fields. Being a pro-farmer leader, Chandrashekhar Rao supplied water to agriculture fields even though there was no water in Nagarjuna Sagar Project.
For the sake of their selfish gains in elections, some selfish Congress leaders complained to the Election Commission against Dalit Bandhu. Chandrashekhar Rao was a humanitarian who implemented Dalit Bandhu even in a constituency represented by a Congress MLA.
The Chief Minister issued a Government Order to offer Dalit Bandhu to all Dalits in Sathupalli on saturation mode, Veeraiah said while appealing to the people to support the BRS party in the elections make Chandrashekhar Rao a hat-trick Chief Minister and to elect him as MLA for the fourth time.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has warned Israel and the United States that the continuation of the war against the besieged Gaza Strip could result in “another surprise” by the resistance forces.
“In my yesterday meeting, political officials of Hamas noted that in case the war is not stopped, the region would be closer to the level of taking a bigger decision,” he told a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan.
Amir-Abdollahian met Fidan a day after Iran’s top diplomat sat down for talks with Hamas leaders in Qatar.
“If the war is not stopped, [the responsibility] for the expansion of the war directly lies with the Zionist regime and the US. Washington should accept the responsibility for its all-out support for the killing of people and deal with its consequences”, Amir-Abdollahian said.
“If the war continues, the conditions won’t remain the same and the resistance will make another surprise move,” he said.
The Iranian minister reaffirmed Tehran’s call for a peace conference with the participation of Muslim and Arab countries “as soon as possible.”

Hyderabad:
The national executive member of the BJP, Gaddam Vivekanand, who was heading the manifesto committee of Telangana BJP, crossed over to the Congress, saying the shift was needed to end Chief Minister KCR’s rule in the state.
“We struggle for Telangana but people are not able to enjoy the benefits. Only one family has benefited, so I joined the Congress to defeat BRS and KCR,” Mr Vivekanand said.
The former MP spoke with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who is campaigning in Telangana, and the state Congress chief Revanth Reddy, who said it was a homecoming for Vivekananda, who is the son of Congressman G Venkataswamy. His brother G Vinod is the Congress candidate from Bellampalle.
There is a strong buzz that the Chennur seat has not been announced by the Congress yet with a view to accommodating Vivekanand, who may want the seat to be offered to his son.
A hint to that effect came from Revanth Reddy who said Venkataswamy’s family had a deep bond with the Gandhi family and the Congress and “we want the third generation also to be associated with the Congress”.
Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy, who made a similar jump from the BJP to the Congress, had given a similar reason for his homecoming.
“Though the BJP leaders were saying that Kavitha would be arrested in the alleged liquor scam case, that seems to have gone into cold storage, provoking criticism and belief among people that the BJP has had an understanding with the BRS. That is why I returned to the Congress, to defeat KCR,” said Mr Reddy.
The Left parties which have been in talks with the Congress for seat-sharing, refused to react on whether Vivekanand returning to the Congress could spoil the understanding on seats.
It had been reported that the CPI was being offered two seats, Chennur and Kothagudem, and the CPM was being given two.
“We will wait for two days and then take a decision,” a senior leader said.
Vivek, 66, was elected Congress MP from Peddapalli in 2009 and lost the election in 2014. He has been in and out of the BRS and Congress twice and joined the BJP in August 2019 and is back in the Congress today.
The voting for the 119-member assembly will take place on November 30. The votes will be counted on December 3.
