Watch: Shaheen Afridi Sets World Record With Fiery Spell In World Cup

Shaheen Afridi‘s perfection against came to the fore in the Cricket World Cup as the left-arm pacer returned with figures of 3/23 against Bangladesh in a crucial match for Pakistan in Kolkata. Courtesy the start that Shaheen Afridi gave, with two wickets in the first three overs of Bangladesh innings, Pakistan restricted Bangladesh just 204 in what is a must-win match for the Babar Azam-led team. The Pakistan pacer also ompleted 100 ODI wickets on Tuesday, becoming the fastest pacer to do so.

Shaheen Afridi’s wickets included Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossein Shanto and Mahmadullah. Shaheen has achieved the milestone in just 51 matches, making him the fastest pacer to reach a century of wickets. In that aspect, this is a world record. In 51 ODIs, Shaheen has 102 wickets at an average of 22.78, with the best bowling figures of 6/35. Shaheen is also the fastest Pakistan bowler to reach the mark, surpassing Saqlain Mushtaq (53 ODIs)

But overall, Shaheen is the third-fastest bowler in ODIs to reach 100 wickets, behind Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichanne (42 matches) and Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan (44 matches).

Shaheen is having a pretty solid World Cup so far. In seven matches, he has taken 16 wickets at an average of 19.75, with the best bowling figures of 5/54. With Australia’s Adam Zampa, he is the joint-highest wicket-taker in the WC currently.

Coming to the match, Bangladesh elected to bat first. Knocks from Mahmudullah (56 in 70 balls, with six fours and a six), Litton Das (45 in 64 balls, with six fours) and skipper Shakib al Hasan (43 in 64 balls, with four boundaries) came in handy as Bangladesh was bundled out for 204 in 45.1 overs.

Besides Shaheen, Mohammed Waseem Jr (3/31) and Haris Rauf (2/36) also delivered solid spells with the ball. Iftikhar Ahmed and Usama Mir also got one wicket.

Now, Bangladesh, out of the tournament with one win in six matches, need to defend 205. Pakistan will need to chase down this total to secure their third win in seven matches and keep their hopes for the semis alive.

Turkish Parliament Won't Speed Up Sweden's NATO Bid, Says Panel Chair

Ankara:

The Turkish parliament’s foreign affairs committee will discuss ratifying Sweden’s NATO membership bid as part of its regular agenda as the issue was not so urgent for Ankara as for some other countries, its chair said on Wednesday.

President Tayyip Erdogan submitted the ratification bill for Sweden’s NATO membership bid to parliament last month, a move welcomed by Stockholm as it would clear the way for it to join the Western defence alliance.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said he wants a “speedy vote” by Turkey’s parliament and that the process was “going well”. But parliament’s foreign affairs committee chair Fuat Oktay said Turkey was in no hurry.

“Sweden’s NATO membership is just one of the international agreements on our agenda waiting for ratification,” Oktay told a meeting of lawmakers. “We will discuss it when the time comes … within the framework of our own priorities… What is urgent for others is not necessarily urgent for (us).”

The Sweden NATO membership bill must be approved by the committee before a vote by the full parliament, at which point Erdogan would sign it into law.

Long-neutral Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO last year to bolster their security after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Finland’s membership was sealed in April, but Sweden’s bid had been held up by Turkey and Hungary.

Turkey said Sweden must first take measures against supporters of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and members of a network Ankara holds responsible for a 2016 coup attempt. Turkey treats both groups as terrorist organisations.

Sweden approved a new anti-terrorism law in July.

Sweden’s bid has been stranded in Hungary’s parliament since last year, with the ruling nationalists saying there is no threat to Sweden’s security and citing what they call undue Swedish allegations that they have eroded democracy in Hungary.

Congress 'Synonymous To Every Problem In India': Yogi Adityanath

Jaipur:

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday lashed out at the Congress and said the party has become “synonymous to every problem in India”.

Addressing a meeting held in Tijara on the occasion of the filing of nomination by BJP candidate and MP Baba Balaknath, Yogi Adityanath also hit out at the Congress government in Rajasthan on the law and order in the state.

“Congress, as per its nature, is leaving no stone unturned in tarnishing the glorious tradition of Rajasthan. The party has become the name of the problem within the country. Congress has become synonyms to every problem in India,” Yogi Adityanath said.

The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said that the BJP’s “double engine government can solve all problems”.

“All the problems which India is solving one by one today under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are the contribution of the Congress,” he added.

“Wherever there is BJP’s double engine government, there is security, prosperity, development and work is being done to provide the benefits of schemes to every section of the society without discrimination,” he added.

Accusing his Rajasthan counterpart Ashok Gehlot of playing politics of appeasement, Yogi Adityanath said, “How long will this game of appeasement continue? On one hand, you glorify cow smugglers and on the other, you run bulldozers on the ashrams of revered saints.” “How can this be accepted? The saints are murdered here, cattle smuggling and slaughter take place, mothers and daughters are not safe, and any goon comes and captures the businessmen’s property,” he added.

Baba Balaknath filed his nomination papers from the Tijara assembly constituency on Wednesday.

The Congress has fielded Imran Khan for this seat.

“I have been told that the Congress candidate from Tijara uses big metaphors about himself. Only Bajrangbali’s mace can cure the Talibani mindset. Are you seeing how Israel is currently working to crush the Taliban mentality in Gaza,” Yogi Adityanath said.

The 200-member Rajasthan Assembly will go to polls on November 25 and the counting of votes will be taken up on December 3.

Valparaiso Univ assisting attacked Khammam student’s family for US travel

New York: The Valparaiso University in the US state of Indiana has said that the attack on its 24-year-old student from Telangana has left them “shocked and saddened” and they are offering all assistance to fly the victim’s family to the country.

Varun Raj Pucha, who was studying computing and information sciences in Valparaiso University, has been battling for his life after a 24-year-old man drove a knife into his head at a public gym last week.

He was rushed to a hospital in Fort Wayne where the doctors attending him reportedly gave a zero to 5 per cent chance of survival as the knife was driven into his temple and ultimately the brain stem.

“We are shocked and saddened by the attack on Varun Raj Pucha. At Valparaiso University, we consider each other family, and this incident is horrifying for us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of his friends and family,” Jose Padilla, the university’s president, said in a statement published in the Chicago Tribune.

The University said they are cooperating with the police in the investigations and also offering all possible assistance to fly Varun’s family to the US.

“In addition to our thoughts and prayers, the University and Valpo Community are offering all assistance and resources available to help Varun’s family get to the United States as quickly as possible,” Michael Fenton, the University’s Director of Communications said.

Varun’s department head at the University described him as a “polite” and “conscious student” who was focused on achieving his goals.

“Varun has always been a very conscious student, grateful for the opportunity to study in the United States, and focused on achieving his academic and professional goals,” said George Pati, head of Varun’s programme at Valparaiso University.

“Varun is known to be polite and earnest in how he approaches his relationships with fellow students, faculty, and staff within the department of computing and information sciences,” Pati told the Tribune.

Valparaiso police were called around 9 a.m. on Sunday to Planet Fitness after Jordan Andrade used a knife for cutting open boxes to stab Varun in the head.

Police said they walked into the gym’s massage chair room to find a large amount of blood on one of two chairs and a folding knife on the counter that reportedly belonged to Andrade.

They found Varun seated in a massage chair with a head injury.

Andrade told police that “someone” told him that Varun is “creepy” and “threatening” and feared that he would “assassinate him”.

He is presently lodged at the Porter County Jail and has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up by the North America Telugu Society (NATS) to seek medical and financial support for Varun and his family.

“We were contacted by the family with a heavy heart, asking for our support to cover his extensive medical expenses and travel expenses for his parents to the USA. The NATS Helpline team has been providing the family with necessary assistance and also initiated this fundraising for medical and financial support,” a NATS statement posted on the fundraising page read.

Rupee rises 9 paise to 83.19 against US dollar in early trade

Mumbai: The rupee appreciated by 9 paise to 83.19 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday, tracking its Asian peers as risk-on sentiments prevailed in the market as the US Fed was a bit dovish in its policy meeting.

A weak US dollar overseas and positive domestic equities supported the local unit in early trade, forex traders said.

The US Fed kept interest rates on hold, and its chairman looked content with the economy’s soft landing. Following the decision, the dollar index softened, and the 10-year bond yield fell to 4.70.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the domestic unit opened at 83.23 against the dollar and then touched an early high of 83.19, registering a gain of 9 paise over its previous close.

On Wednesday, the rupee settled at 83.28 against the US dollar. The local unit hit all-time low level of 83.35 against the American currency during intra-day.

“Asian currencies all gained against the dollar after the dovish FED as risk-on sentiments prevailed in the market. Brent oil rose slightly to USD 85.45 per barrel,” said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director of Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.

Bhansali noted that the rupee made a new closing low of 83.29/30 on demand from importers, FPI outflows and ECB redemptions.

“However, today’s opening is higher at 83.22 as FED was a bit dovish in its policy meeting,” he said.

The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.51 per cent lower at 106.34.

Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 1.05 per cent to USD 85.52 per barrel.

In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 568.23 points or 0.89 per cent higher at 64,159.56. The broader NSE Nifty advanced 155.80 points or 0.82 per cent to 19,144.95.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Wednesday as they sold shares worth Rs 1,816.91 crore, according to exchange data.

Arvind Kejriwal questions legality of ED summons

On October 30, Kejriwal responded to the ED’s summons by demanding the withdrawal of the notice and questioning its legality.

Arvind Kejriwal questions legality of ED summons

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has questioned the legality of the Enforcement Directorate summons on the day that he is scheduled to appear before the agency in connection with its ongoing probe into the Delhi excise policy case.

In a reply to ED on its summons notice on October 30, Kejriwal demanded that the agency withdraw the notice and questioned its legality.

“The summon notice is illegal and politically motivated. The notice was sent at the behest of the BJP. Notice was sent to ensure that I am unable to go for election campaigning in four states. ED should withdraw the notice immediately,” Kejriwal stated in his reply to ED.

Kejriwal was earlier summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in April this year, in connection with the case.

However, Kejriwal was not named as an accused in the first information report (FIR) filed by the CBI on August 17, last year.

In February 2023, Arvind Kejriwal’s Deputy Manish Sisodia was arrested by the CBI for alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi’s new excise policy. the policy was withdrawn amid allegations of foul play by the opposition.
Sisodia is currently in judicial custody.

The Supreme Court on October 30 dismissed the bail plea of Manish Sisodia in connection with cases related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi Excise Policy case. The court directed to complete the trial in the case in six to eight months.

The court, while refusing bail, also took note of the aspects regarding the transfer of a money trail of 338 crores, which is tentatively established.

The court also remarked that if the trial in the case proceeds at a slow pace, Sisodia can apply for bail again after three months.

According to the CBI, Sisodia had played the most important and vital role in the criminal conspiracy and was deeply involved in the formulation as well as the implementation of the said policy to ensure the achievement of the objectives of the said conspiracy.

"Parliamentary Board Will Decide": BJP Leader On Next Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister

'Parliamentary Board Will Decide': BJP Leader On Next Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister

The state will vote on November 17.

Gwalior:

Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad on Wednesday said the party’s parliamentary board will take a decision on who will be the next chief minister of Madhya Pradesh after it wins the November 17 assembly elections and forms a government in the state.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s move of fielding seven Lok Sabha members, including three Union ministers – Narendra Singh Tomar, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Prahlad Patel – and also party’s general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya for the Madhya Pradesh assembly polls has signalled that has kept options open for the state’s top post.

Addressing a press conference here, former Union minister Prasad said, “It is the tradition of the party that the parliamentary board takes the decision…And opinion of MLAs will be taken when the government is formed. A deserving person will become the chief minister.”

He was replying to a question about who could be the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh if the BJP wins.

During a media interaction in August this year, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had refused to give a direct reply, when asked if incumbent Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will continue to be the chief minister if the BJP retains power after the elections.

“Why are you (media) doing the party’s work? Our party will do its own work. Shivraj ji is chief minister and we are in the election…Take the development works of Modi ji (PM Modi) and Shivraj ji to the public. Also highlight if the Congress did any development,” Mr Shah had said.

Targeting the opposition Congress, Mr Prasad said when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, PM Narendra Modi condemned it, but at the same time, India helped the needy persons in Palestine.

“But the stand of the Congress has been the same as that of the Muslim League in Kerala. A Hamas leader addressed a rally in Kerala but Congress is maintaining silence on the issue. Did the Congress oppose when INDIA bloc constituents termed Sanatana Dharma as dengue and malaria?” he asked.

On the one hand the Congress keeps silence when Sanatan Dharmaa is insulted, while on the other it tries to connect with Hamas for votes, the BJP MP alleged.

Elections to the 230-member Madhya Pradesh assembly will be held on November 17.

India To Buy Venezuelan Oil? What Minister Said

India To Buy Venezuelan Oil? What Minister Said

Indian Oil Corp and Reliance Industries have bought Venezuelan oil in the past, Mr Puri said. (File)

New Delhi:

Indian refiners can process Venezuelan oil and the nation may buy it provided that it is available cheaply, Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Wednesday, days after the US temporarily lifted sanctions on OPEC member Venezuela’s oil sector.

India is the world’s third biggest oil importer and consumer and ships over 80% of its oil needs from overseas and wants to cut its crude import bill.

“It is always good when more supplies come to market,” Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said at an industry event, speaking about Venezuelan oil, and added: “We will buy from wherever we can get cheaper oil.”

Venezuela has one of the largest oil reserves and production from it at a large scale will have a dampening effect on global oil prices, Mr Puri said.

The South American country had been under crushing sanctions since 2019. These were broadly lifted by the US two weeks ago in response to a deal reached between the Venezuelan government and opposition parties for the 2024 election.

A new general licence issued by the US Treasury Department authorises Venezuela to produce and export oil to its chosen markets for the next six months without limitation.

Indian Oil Corp and Reliance Industries have bought Venezuelan oil in the past, Mr Puri said.
