Indian batting line up’s latest sensation Shubman Gill, came very close to scoring his first ODI World Cup century against Sri Lanka on Thursday but fell 8 runs short of his 100.

Crowd at the Wankhede stadium, where the match was played, got stunned with the dismissal and among them was Shubman Gill’s alleged girlfriend, Sara Tendulkar – legendry Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s daughter.

India is currently the only unbeaten team in the tournament and is well on course to win the seventh match on the trot as Sri Lankan wickets are tumbling with Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah breathing fire in the powerplay.

Mamata Banerjee praised administration, police for “peaceful” Durga Puja (Representational)

Kolkata:

Asserting that the recently-concluded Durga Puja was “peaceful”, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said that the state witnessed business of over Rs 85,000 crore and employment generation for around 3 lakh people during the festivities.

Referring to a survey by the British Council which stated that West Bengal recorded a business of Rs 72,000 crore during this year’s Durga Puja, a seemingly happy Mamata Banerjee said she hoped that the business will grow in the coming years.

“Durga Puja has reached a new height this year. In the coming years, we will organise it in a bigger way. A British Council research stated that this year, there was business of around Rs 72,000 crore but I believe that it will be around Rs 80,000 crore to Rs 85,000 crore. Over 3 lakh job opportunities were created, which is a big gain for the poor,” Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat.

“Last time, some people moved the court because I had given some funds to clubs. I give money to the clubs because they do social work. If I can earn Rs 72,000 crore by spending Rs 300 crore then it should be an economic model. All the money may not come to us, but it’s good that so many people have earned it,” she said.

The Mamata Banerjee government provided financial aid of Rs 70,000 to each of the 40,000 clubs that organised Durga Puja this year.

Mamata Banerjee also lauded the people of the state, administration and the police for “peaceful” Durga Puja celebrations.

“Durga Puja was held peacefully and the credit goes to the clubs, housing societies, media, administration, police and civic society. People from all religions participated in the celebration and not a single incident was reported from anywhere in the state,” she said.

Mamata Banerjee, who was on “restricted movement” for swelling in her left knee after returning from a 12-day trip to Spain and the UAE, said, “My infection had turned septic due to wrong treatment. I could not move out of my bed for seven days.” The Chief Minister said that despite her injuries, she had attended office from home.

“Despite all these hurdles, I had gone through the papers that reached me from my office every day. I held meetings with various officials,” she said.

Congress offices deserted in Patancheru

Congress Office in RC Puram wears deserted look in Sangareddy district on Thursday.

Sangareddy: While the day for filing nominations for the Assembly elections is just hours away in Telangana, Congress party offices in Patancheru Assembly constituency wear a deserted look. With the party leadership delaying the announcement of a candidate for the constituency, the party cadre here are silent.

In fact, senior Congress leader Kata Srinivas Goud, who had contested on a Congress ticket in 2018, had opened Congress offices in all mandals expecting a ticket for him. Senior leaders Damodara Raja Narasimha, Turpu Jagga Reddy and other leaders too had opened offices where followers of Srinivas Goud used to sit and meet the local cadre every day. However, the entry of Neelam Madhu, who resigned from BRS as he was denied a ticket, into Congress has changed the mood of Congress leaders and cadre in Patancheru.

Since there were talks that the Congress high command has offered the seat to Madhu instead of Srinivas Goud, party leaders and cadre are staying away from the party offices. There was literally no activity of the Congress in the constituency though the election is less than one month away. Madhu and Srinivas Goud have been camping in New Delhi, reportedly lobbying for a ticket, while Damodara Raja Narasimha, an ardent supporter of Srinivas Goud, too has reportedly gone to New Delhi help Goud.

Madhu reportedly has the blessings of TPCC president A Revanth Reddy. Patancheru Congress leaders and cadre are eagerly awaiting an official announcement of the candidate for the constituency.

On the other hand, BRS candidate and two-time sitting MLA Gudem Mahipal Reddy has been vigorously campaigning across the constituency.

Authorities Took No Steps To Raise Awareness On Mumbai Air Quality: High Court

Authorities Took No Steps To Raise Awareness On Mumbai Air Quality: High Court

The AQI in Mumbai has ranged from between 150 (moderate) and 411 (severe). (File)

Mumbai:

The Bombay High Court has noted that no steps have been taken by authorities to create health advisories or awareness among citizens about the deleterious levels of Air Quality Index (AQI) presently prevailing in the city.

A division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Arif Doctor made this observation in its order while taking suo motu cognisance of the air pollution in Mumbai.

The bench on Tuesday issued a notice to the Maharashtra government, the Union government, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and sought to know from them what measures have been undertaken to tackle the problem.

The court said it would hear the plea further on November 6.

In its detailed order, made available on Wednesday, referred to media reports and said the AQI in Mumbai over the past 15 to 20 days has ranged from between 150 (moderate) and 411 (severe).

It noted that while the reports say the BMC has taken certain steps to reduce and/or mitigate the air pollution in Mumbai, the AQI levels have not improved so as to bring the same within the healthy limits.

“Further, we must note and what is crucial is that no steps have been taken to create/issue the necessary health advisories as also to raise awareness amongst the citizens so as to best safeguard themselves from deleterious levels of AQI presently prevailing in Mumbai. This factor needs immediate attention,” the order said.

The court said the media reports present an “alarming scenario and one which needs to be urgently addressed and tackled in the welfare and interest of all the residents of Mumbai and its surrounding areas, young and old alike”.

The court sought the assistance of Advocate General Birendra Saraf in the matter and also directed senior advocate Darius Khambata to appear as amicus curiae (to assist the court).

Apart from the suo motu public interest litigation, three city residents had also filed a plea in the high court raising concerns over the same issue.

Hyderabad-based researchers develop new method to assess total biodiversity of any ecosystem

The CCMB study, published in the journal Ecological Indicators, showed that the novel method can detect all kinds of organisms, including viruses, bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes from just a few litres of water sample without any direct capture or counting of species

Hyderabad: Researchers from the Hyderabad-based Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) have developed a new non-invasive method to assess the total biodiversity of any ecosystem by sequencing the DNA fragments found in the environmental samples such as water, soil or air.

The CCMB study, published in the journal Ecological Indicators (October 31, 2023), showed that the novel method can detect all kinds of organisms, including viruses, bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes such as fungi, plants, insects, birds, fishes etc from just a few litres of water sample without any direct capture or counting of species.

Traditional monitoring methods require extensive taxonomic expertise, and are not scalable to large ecosystems because they can be expensive, labour-intensive and time-consuming.

To overcome these limitations, CCMB researchers S. Manu and Dr. G. Umapathy developed a new process to extract and read the genetic information encoded in free-floating environmental DNA (eDNA), which is shed by all organisms into their surroundings through natural processes during their lifetime or after death, a press release said.

In this new method, which was tested in Chilika Lagoon in Odisha, the researchers filtered out eDNA from environmental samples, read their sequences, and thus, identify the source of the eDNA.

Director of CCMB, Dr Vinay K. Nandicoori said this new cutting-edge method of using e-DNA is cheaper, faster, and highly scalable to large freshwater and marine ecosystems which can help in monitoring and conserving the rich biodiversity of our country.

Adilabad: The movement of a tiger from Maharashtra has created a flutter in the bordering villages of Telangana and Maharashtra.

The tiger recently attacked a herd of cows at Thamsi (K) village in Bheempur mandal and injured two calves, triggering panic among locals of surrounding the Gollaghat, Pippalkoti and other villages. It had killed a cow in the forests of Pippalkoti village on October 24. Compensation was given to the owner of the cattle on Wednesday.

Shepherds are hesitating to enter the forests to graze their cattle, while farmers were living in fear due to the movement of the tiger. The residents of Thamsi (K), Gollaghat and Pipplakoti villages requested Forest officials to divert the tiger to another region to prevent cattle killing and human loss.

Forest officials suspect that the tiger belonging to Tipeshwar Tiger Reserve (TTR) in Yavatmal district of the neighboring State might have drifted towards Telangana by crossing the Penganga river in search of territory. They said CCTV camera traps were set up and animal trackers were deployed to track the tiger’s movement.

A base camp was set up to monitor movement of the tiger. Villagers were advised to return home by 4 pm and to visit their farms after 9 am in the light of the tiger’s presence.

A tiger from Maharashtra had strayed into the Adilabad forests in winter of 2022, panicking locals. It stayed here for three months and returned in March. The Tipeshwar reserve reportedly has about 25 to 30 tigers now.

Hyderabad Metro ridership on the rise

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro has witnessed a substantial surge in ridership, as announced during the Q2FY’24 Earnings call of infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro Limited.

P. Ramakrishnan, Head Investor Relations at L&T, had shared the statistics that have been shaping the landscape of the city’s public transportation. In the second quarter of the fiscal year 2023, an average of 3.55 lakh passengers utilized the metro service daily. Fast forward to the second quarter of the fiscal year 2024 (July 1, 2023, to September, 30, 2023), and this number has surged to an impressive 4.62 lakh passengers per day.

The daily ridership in Hyderabad Metro reached an all-time high of 5.47 lakh passengers on September 23. In October, the average weekday ridership has consistently hovered around 5 lakh passengers, while on weekends and holidays, it remains robust at approximately 4 lakh passengers.

As stated by L&T during the earnings call, this substantial growth in ridership has significantly contributed to revenue enhancement in the Hyderabad Metro.

In addition to the increased ridership, L&T reported robust financial figures for the quarter. They achieved an exceptional 19 per cent year-on-year growth in revenue and a staggering 45 per cent year-on-year growth in profit after tax. These results were attributed to improved project execution in the Projects and Manufacturing segment and the profits gained from the sale of commercial property within the Hyderabad Metro project.

During the earnings call, L&T emphasized that the remarkable growth in profit after tax reflects higher volumes, gains from Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) monetization in Hyderabad Metro, and enhanced treasury operations.

The Earnings call also shed light on the financial support received from the Telangana government. Cumulatively, according to L&T, the firm has received Rs 900 crore as of October. “The steady momentum of support is anticipated to continue throughout the fiscal year,” said Ramakrishnan.
