New Delhi:

The Privileges Committee of Rajya Sabha will deliberate on pending cases of complaints of breach against MPs Raghav Chadha, Sanjay Singh and Derek O’Brien during its meeting on Friday.

Sources said the meeting is being held to “secure expeditious processing and finalisation of the committee report in the breach of privilege cases for consideration of its recommendations by the Council of States”.

In a notification, the Rajya Sabha Secretariat said, “Members are informed that the next meeting of the Committee of Privileges will be held at 11 AM on Friday, November 3, 2023, in the Committee room no 4 in Parliament House annexe extension building.” The notification also said the agenda for the meeting would be circulated later.

The sources said complaints of breach of privilege of Parliament are pending against AAP MPs Ragav Chadha and Sanjay Singh and TMC’s Derek O’Brien, after Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar referred them to the Privileges Committee.

Incidentally, both Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh are currently suspended from the house. Mr Chadha is under suspension since August 11 after some MPs, a majority from the ruling BJP, accused him of adding their names to a motion without their consent. The motion sought constitution of a select committee to examine the contentious Delhi Services Bill.

The panel meeting assumes significance as it comes in the backdrop of recent Supreme Court observations in the Raghav Chadha case. During the hearing on the suspension of Mr Chadha, the court had observed that indefinite suspension of an MP could have very serious repercussions for people’s right to be represented by a person of their choice.

It also asked whether the Privileges Committee could order Chadha’s suspension from Rajya Sabha for an unspecified duration.

The Supreme court said the exclusion of a member of the opposition from the House just because of a perspective which may not be consistent with the viewpoint of the government is a serious issue.

Tension rises within INDIA alliance as Akhilesh alleges Congress of “betrayal”

Sitapur: Amid rising tensions within the INDIA alliance , Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday alleged that some “Congress leaders are siding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)”, adding that he would not have trusted the grand old party if he had known that “Congress would betray them”.

He further said he was unaware of the fact that the INDIA bloc has been formed at the national level to defeat the BJP and the alliance partners are not fighting together at the state level.

Akhilesh yadav’s responded fiercely when reporters asked him about his reaction on Congress Uttar Pradesh chief Ajay Rai’s statement that if Congress had fought Ghosi, they (SP) might have lost the seat.

“The state chief has no authority. He was not there in the meeting held at Patna, Mumbai. What does he know about the INDIA alliance?… These people from Congress are siding or involved with the BJP,” the SP leader said while talking to reporters in Sitapur.

SP chief further said that he would not have trusted them if he had known that people from Congress would betray us.

“If I had known that the alliance is not on the state level then I would not have sent SP leaders to Digvijaya Singh…I would not have trusted them if I had known that people from Congress would betray us,” he added.

The Congress’s UP unit chief Ajay Rai has asked the SP to withdraw from MP in favour of the grand old party as the Akhilesh Yadav-led party, he said, did not have any base there.

On Tuesday, while speaking to reporters about the allocation of seats in the INDIA alliance in Madhya Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav said that the Congress party should clarify who will get how many seats in the alliance and whether the alliance will be at a national level or on a state level.

Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) has released its second list of candidates for the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly polls, according to an official statement issued by the party on Wednesday.

The party has declared the names of a total of 22 candidates in the second list.

Madhya Pradesh is one of the five states set to hold elections this year. The state is scheduled to vote on November 17, with the vote count taking place on December 3.

Voters will choose legislators from 230 Assembly constituencies.

The Kamal Nath government collapsed in March 2021 when 22 sitting Congress MLAs resigned under the leadership of Jyotiraditya Scindia and joined the BJP. Subsequently, the BJP formed the government in the state, with Shivraj Singh Chouhan taking office as Chief Minister.

CPI municipal councillors upset Kunamneni’s plan to contest in Kothagudem

CPI municipal councillors demanded the party leadership to allot the Kothagudem Assembly ticket to a BC leader, Sk Sabir Pasha instead of Sambasiva Rao

Khammam: Upsetting CPI State secretary Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao’s reported plan to contest for Kothagudem Assembly seat the party councillors in Kothagudem Municipality and leaders revolted against the party leadership.

They demanded the party leadership to allot the Kothagudem Assembly ticket to a BC leader, Sk Sabir Pasha instead of Sambasiva Rao. Severely criticising the party’s State leadership they issued an ultimatum that they would resign if the Kothagudem seat was not alloted to Pasha. Speaking to the media here on Thursday the CPI municipal floor leader Y Srinivas Reddy, B Srinivas, B Vijaya Kumar, Satyanarana Chary, K Jamalaiah and others alleged that the red flag was being used for selfish politics and personal interests by some leaders.

The Communist Party was ignoring the public problems and struggling for positions. In the past the Communist Party of India leaders used to distribute their lands to the poor people, but now leaders were sharing the seats, they complained.

They said that the party’s ideologies were watered down in the name of alliances. If the State leadership fought continuously on public issues, the communist parties would have been in front of the people as an alternative force in the State.

The decision to resign was taken in protest against the party leadership’s behaviour, the councillors claimed. They noted that as the party leaders they were not in a position to answer the public who were accusing the party of fighting for one seat at the cost of the party’s interests.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) announced its intentions to contest for the Bhadrachalam (ST) and Aswaraopet (ST) in Kothagudem district and the Palair, Madhira (SC), Wyra (ST), Khammam and Sathupalli (SC) seats in Khammam district.

Be wary of Congress and its disruptive potential, says CM KCR

As long as KCR is alive, Telangana will remain secular. There have been no communal riots or any law and order issues for the last nine and a half years, said K Chandrashekhar Rao

Be wary of Congress and its disruptive potential, says CM KCR

BRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao addressing Praja Ashirvada Sabhas at Dharmapuri.

Hyderabad: Asserting that the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) was the sole guardian of Telangana and its people, BRS president and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao on Thursday said his party had reached out to all sections of people without any discrimination whatsoever.

Addressing Praja Ashirvada Sabhas at Nirmal, Balkonda and Dharmapuri as part of his election campaign, the Chief Minister cautioned the people against divisive forces at work to disrupt the State’s progress, and asked the people to safeguard their own interests by rejecting the Congress, which was known for its disruptive potential.

It was for sure that the future of State-sponsored programmes like the Rythu Bandhu, free power to the farm sector and the Dharani portal system, which helped in reviving fortunes of farmers, would be at stake if the Congress was given power, for which Congress leaders right from Rahul Gandhi to A Revanth Reddy were desperate. With a notorious past replete with communal disturbances, a Congress regime was one to be wary of.

“As long as KCR is alive, Telangana will remain secular. There have been no communal riots or any law and order issues for the last nine and a half years,” he said.

Continuing to present the BRS as the face of development that changed the profile of Telangana by putting in place flagship schemes, Chandrashekhar Rao said it was for the people to decide now whether to facilitate the growth of the State from strength to strength or to allow the robust system built over the years to collapse.

After getting a vociferous ‘yes’ from the massive gathering at Nirmal in reply to his question whether the BRS flagship programmes should continue or not, Chandrashekhar Rao said Dalits were subjected to neglect and suppression in the country for long. After taking stock of the status of Dalits in society and the wretched conditions they were living in for decades, the Dalit Bandhu scheme was devised. The scheme had turned out to be a big boon. Had the same measure been implemented right from the days of Jawaharlal Nehru, their status would have been totally different today. The Dalits were used as mere vote banks, with nothing concrete being done for them, he said.

On the other hand, the rights of the people of Telangana were protected by the BRS. It was the party that fought relentlessly for years for a separate Telangana. Statehood was achieved even if it called for venturing into the jaws of death. The BRS government schemes had facilitated all- round development of the State. Four districts were carved out of the erstwhile Adilabad. It paved the way for setting up four medical colleges subsequently. People in Nirmal, Asifabad and Mancherial were as happy as those in Adilabad with the rapid strides achieved in development after the reorganization of the revenue administration with the formation of new districts, he added.
